I was able to circumvent the error by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then Ctrl-Alt-F7, which brought me to a graphical screen with the LUKS password prompt. On a T61p, after I set the fan level to full-speed and it is showing (and sounding like) ~6300 rpm, still the CPU temperature cannot be kept from growing beyond 95 ℃ when two processes are busy-looping. To note, setting the fan level to 7 results in the screaming speed of ~3200 rpm. Something is fishy with these controls. I tried to file the bug for Compiz developers, but was not helped by having to choose between three different Bugzilla hosts referred from various places. Thankfully, one does not work, bringing it town to two. The database at bugs.compiz.org has a total of 15 bugs at the moment, and the first of the reports is hardly 2 months old.
