There are other desktop environments you can try out as well. I've been
using KDE on my 11.10 install  quiet happy with it.

If you are looking for a more gnome-ish experience, then there is Cinnamon
as well which you can easily install  try.

I was facing the same problem on BSNL broadband. The solution is to
change the MTU settings in your router from 1492 to 1452.

Acer has recebtly come out with a eMachines(Acer subsidiary) laptop
for 20,500/- and it comes pre-installed with linux(no idea about what
distro).

You can try a few things. Go to Machine  Settings and click on USB in
the left pane and confirm that both the checkboxes are enabled.

Secondly, with your USB drive connected, click on the Add filter from
device button on the right-hand side. This will show you the
connected USB drive, just select it. Then unmount the USB drive. After
this load, load your virtual machine and then connect the USB device.
Now hopefully the device will show up.
