[Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2013-02-08 Thread Scott Severance
Bear in mind that third-party software isn't all developed on Ubuntu.
It's patently unreasonable to try to force third-party developers to
code specially for Ubuntu. It seems rather arrogant for Ubuntu to try to
dictate to third-party developers their own idea of best practices.

What's the harm in leaving the whitelist as long as even one app uses
it? (It should have been created as a blacklist from the beginning, but
that's water under the bridge now.)

I've also noted that all of the comments on this bug save two have been
negative, yet the developers don't feel compelled to defend their
decision in the face of strong opposition.

[Bug 1064962] Re: [SRU] Global menubar items do not work when opening a document directly from nautilus with no LibreOffice instance running

2012-12-01 Thread Scott Severance
@SRoesgen: The reason this bug has been closed is that the bug described
in the initial report *has* been fixed. What you're describing is a
different bug, as has been pointed out several times already. It makes
no sense to conflate multiple bug reports. Not every problem with the
menus in LibreOffice is due to the same bug or the same cause.

[Bug 1082297] [NEW] Wrong permissions when using Save As

2012-11-23 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
===

1. Download a PDF from the internet.
2. When Firefox asks what to do with the file, choose the option to open it in
Evince.
3. Once the PDF is open in Evince, do a File Save as.
4. Observe that the file is created with the permissions 0400.

Correct behavior:
=

Evince should follow the same permissions model as other programs, using
the umask to determine the default permissions, which would be 0644 on a
default Ubuntu machine.

Impact of the bug:
==

Because of the incorrect permissions, it's impossible to directly
overwrite an affected PDF without manually fixing the permissions. It
makes no sense not to give the owner write permission by default, as any
situations where 0400 permissions were desirable would surely be corner
cases.

[Bug 905854] Re: memory leak in unity-2d-panel and indicator-multiload

@Kevin:

If that's the case, then there's an easy workaround. In the preferences,
it's possible to remove all the status information from the menu, which
I've done since I considered it distracting. I haven't observed any
leaks since that time.

The combination of this and bug 1074528 is deadly. This bug appeared

At any rate, I currently have no way of accessing the menus in

[Bug 105334] Re: No search field

2012-10-04 Thread Scott Severance
Thomas,

Thanks for the reminder about this long-forgotten bug. I don't know if
anyone else is interested in this, but I see that I didn't follow up
correctly before. At this point I have no further interest in this bug.

At the time I filed it, I was running Edgy on a fairly ancient laptop.
Now I'm running Precise on several more recent machines. I find that the
Unity dash accomplishes everything that I was asking for in this bug.
Thus, as far as I'm concerned this bug is obsolete.

[Bug 734428]

2012-04-18 Thread Scott Severance
Someone commented in the downstream bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/734428/comments/27)
that this is independent of GTK. He reported this bug in KDE with the
GTK packages uninstalled.

Is there anything holding up work on this bug?

[Bug 916879] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in unity::switcher::SwitcherController::CompareSwitcherItemsPriority()

2012-04-15 Thread Scott Severance
This bug was introduced into Oneiric by an SRU. It's a regression. It
was fixed a couple of months ago, yet the fix remains unavailable to the
current stable version of Ubuntu, which, as pointed out above, will
remain in widespread use for several months yet.

Furthermore, it is a *major* usability bug. Surely AltTab is one of
the most widely used keyboard shortcuts. It's simply impossible to
remember to avoid it in order to avoid a crash. I've worked around this
bug by switching to Unity 2D, but what about those who aren't so
technically inclined? Are they able to work around it? Will they find
this bug report and the workarounds posted here?

Normally, I'm not one to add to bug noise by complaining. But this seems
to me to be a basic issue of responsibility. I understand that bugs are
a fact of life, but if you break it, you should fix it -- especially
when the fix is already available, and especially when the breakage was
due to an SRU. It seems that someone ought to take enough pride in their
work that they take basic responsibility.

I know that these kinds of complaints are generally frowned upon, but
what recourse do I have? I don't have the ability to apply the fix
myself, and there's no other place I'm aware of that's more appropriate
for this purpose.

[Bug 734428] Re: [Upstream] Wrong automatic text color dark grey with black background

2012-04-09 Thread Scott Severance
Testing shows that removal of only libreoffice-gnome is sufficient to
fix the text color issue. However, removal of that package results in
lost functionality in other areas.

[Bug 936618] [NEW] eog crashes on launch

2012-02-19 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Every time I try to run eog, it crashes. The type of file I'm trying to
open doesn't matter.

The main window flashes briefly on the screen (for well less than 1s),
then there's a crash.

Normally, the crash is a segmentation fault. I do however have one
instance where the following was printed to the console:

[Bug 923568] Re: Presenter Console extension does nothing

2012-01-31 Thread Scott Severance
I can't test the reboot hypothesis at the moment since I'm traveling and
don't have access to a second monitor. If that's the case, however, I
don't think that setting the reboot flag is the proper solution, though
it's better than nothing. A reboot shouldn't be necessary; the best
thing is to figure out why the installation isn't happening correctly.

[Bug 923568] [NEW] Presenter Console extension does nothing

2012-01-29 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

The Presenter Console (libreoffice-presenter-console) does nothing when
enabled. I expect to see a helpful panel of information on my laptop
while Impress is in slideshow mode showing slides on the external
display.

However, the extension has absolutely no visible effect on what happens.
My screen looks exactly the same as if the extension wasn't installed,
and there are no error messages. The only indication that it's installed
is that I can see it in the extensions manager.

This bug occurs on every machine I've tested over the last approximately
two years.

[Bug 920281] [NEW] Screen brightness inverted when on battery

2012-01-22 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

When my HP Mini 110-1000 is running on AC power, screen brightness works
correctly. However, when I'm running on battery, the following happens
after about 20 seconds or so of no user activity:

- First, the screen gets *brighter*--nearly 100% brightness.
- Second, the keyboard brightness keys are inverted: the brightness up key
decreases brightness and vice versa. However, brightness only varies over a
narrow range which is entirely brighter than the normal brightness for running
on battery.
- Moving the mouse or hitting a normal key restores brightness to the
expected levels for battery mode and restores the brightness keys to normal
operation. After about 20 seconds of no user input, the bug pops up again.

I'm running Oneiric with kernel 3.0.0-15-generic. I first noticed this
bug upon upgrading to Oneiric, but another bug kept me running a Natty
kernel (2.6.38-10) until recently. Natty kernels didn't exhibit this
bug, so it's a regression. Unfortunately, I'm not running Precise, so I
can't test it.

[Bug 909613] [NEW] dconf-editor is sometimes too tall

2011-12-29 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

When dconf-editor runs, its height changes arbitrarily. Usually I run it
maximized (I'm on a netbook with a screen resolution of 1024x576).
Generally, it's OK, but for some items the window becomes far too tall
for my screen for no apparent reason.

The first attached screenshot is what I see when I browse to
com.canonical.indicator.datetime.custom-time-format with dconf-editor
maximized. I know how to use Alt+Drag to move the window, but how many
users know about that? And since the close buttons disappear, they'd be
in a real predicament.

The next two screenshots show neighboring options with the dconf-editor
window at its minimum height. As you can see, both displays are
unreasonable, since you can't see which option is selected. However, the
one doesn't even fit in my screen.

This bug affects multiple items in dconf-editor; I just gave a single
example. It affects the two machines I've tested it on (including one
with a much larger screen), and I've seen it in both Natty and Oneiric.

Of course, the proper behaviors here are:

1. The scrollable pane where settings can be changed should have its
minimum height specified such that at least one line is readable at all
times.

2. The window's minimum height should be set in a sane way.

3. If the windows minimum height exceeds the available screen height,
the window should scroll.

[Bug 734428] Re: [Upstream] Wrong automatic text color dark grey with black background

2011-12-23 Thread Scott Severance
The proper solution here is to decouple the default text colors from the
GTK theme. As pointed out earlier, an LibO document should look the same
on any computer, provided the requisite fonts are installed.

Since this bug is getting ignored upstream, and since it's particularly
apparent on Ubuntu due to the Ambiance theme, can we go ahead and fix it
here? Upstream users who aren't on Ubuntu likely don't even notice this

[Bug 800222] Re: Intermittent freeze - UI won't respond to clicks or keypresses

2011-11-19 Thread Scott Severance
I don't know how recent the latest compiz updates are, but I'm guessing
they've been out for a while since I don't recall seeing them. The
machine I originally reported the bug about experiences these crashes
less frequently under Oneiric than Natty. It hasn't crashed in a while,
but considering the crash pattern lately, that doesn't mean much.

However, just a few days ago, my friend's machine exhibited the same
symptoms. Her machine is running Oneiric, and I've configured it to
automatically install security updates. I don't know, however, how
diligent she is about installing the other updates that can't be set to
auto-install.

[Bug 883908] Re: Display of overlay grid is not configurable

2011-10-30 Thread Scott Severance
The linked branch contains code that should mostly solve this bug. I
couldn't get it to actually work, but that's likely because I don't know
how to hack on this project in particular or Vala in general. Hopefully
it'll serve as a good start, or else hopefully someone can provide more
details about why it didn't work.

To test, I did the following:

./autogen.sh --prefix=/some/local/prefix
make
make install
vi $prefix/etc/lightdm/unity-greeter.conf # set draw-grid to false
$prefix/sbin/unity-greeter --test-mode

[Bug 881166] Re: Backlight sometimes gets disabled

2011-10-25 Thread Scott Severance
I've verified that the bug also exists upstream as of 3.1-rc10.

As a workaround, I've been booting with acpi=off, but this is far from
ideal since in that condition my machine can't go into power-saving mode
or run Unity 3D or Gnome Shell.

[Bug 881166] [NEW] Backlight sometimes gets disabled

2011-10-24 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to Oneiric, I've been affected by the following
regression (which didn't occur in Natty):

If I leave my box unattended and it goes into power-saving mode, when I
resume I won't be able to see what's on the screen very well since the
backlight will be disabled. If I explicitly put the machine into power-
saving mode by closing the lid or choosing the suspend option from the
menu, I can resume with no problem.

I initially thought that this bug was the same as the one experienced by
my friend (bug 779166). But there are a number of differences between
the two. Also, the workaround given in post 49 of that bug (setpci -s
00:02.0 F4.B=00) seems to only make matters worse for me. And since the
setpci man page is thoroughly incomprehensible, I don't know whether I
can modify the setpci command to fix my issues.

This is an HP Mini 110 (netbook), and I've only ever run the kernel
versions provided by default in Ubuntu.

[Bug 779166] Re: Upgrade to version 11.04, disable the laptop display back light

2011-10-21 Thread Scott Severance
@cgonzalez and anyone else:

Since the screen also goes dark when resuming from suspend or other
purposes, and rc.local doesn't get run at that time, I've also added the
relevant setpci command to root's crontab, to be executed every minute.
That way, the screen isn't black for more than a minute.

(I might add that the machine affected belongs to a non-technical friend
of mine who doesn't want anything complex.)

@Doug.

Thanks for the partial fix, but still, if the opacity is set to, say,
50%, the shadow still looks weird. The shadow should follow the panel's
opacity.

[Bug 498933] Re: Crash when restoring data KeyError

2011-08-17 Thread Scott Severance
I've only started using Deja-dup (and thus Duplicity) since I've been
running Ubuntu 11.04. I'm currently running duplicity-0.6.13, and have
only used an older version if such a version was once in the official
Natty repositories.

[Bug 498933] Re: Crash when restoring data KeyError

2011-08-11 Thread Scott Severance
I'm also experiencing this bug. I'm backing up to RackSpace via DéjàDup.

I don't know if this helps any, but I have DéjàDup configured to backup
daily and keep backups for at least a month. Because my backup set is
large and my machine isn't always online, full backups take considerably
more than a week to complete, meaning that once a full backup completes,
it's only a few days until DéjàDup decides to do another full backup.
Additionally, when restoring, I only have two restore points available:
2011-07-01 and 2011-07-14 (today's date is 2011-08-11, and backups
should be happening daily).

Finally, the backup that ran today aborted with an error. However,
unfortunately I didn't note the error, since I wasn't in bug-reporting
mode.

I don't know whether any of this info is helpful in diagnosing this
problem.

[Bug 800222] Re: Intermittent freeze - UI won't respond to clicks or keypresses

2011-08-10 Thread Scott Severance
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 natty running-unity ubuntu

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

On an older Samsung desktop at work (running Natty), I get occasional
freezes. During the freeze, I can move the mouse pointer normally, but
the system doesn't respond to mouse clicks. Also, keyboard input is
ignored except for the key combos to drop to a console. The screen isn't
updated; for example, the clock appears frozen, etc. These freezes
almost always happen after the machine has been sitting idle for a
while. It's possible that the screensaver (blank screen) aggravates the
problem, but I can't prove that it does.

To recover, I have to send kill -9 to the compiz process and let it get
respawned. Nicer signals (15, 1, 2) don't have any apparent effect.

- Since this isn't a crash, I don't think I can get apport traces, and
- since I can't predict when the freeze will occur, it's difficult to get
- other real-time info. I don't really know what kind of additional info
- would be useful in this report. I'll be glad to attempt to supply any
- requested info, though.

[Bug 800222] Re: Intermittent freeze - UI won't respond to clicks or keypresses

2011-08-10 Thread Scott Severance
Just a note: You might find Unity 2D stuff in the logs. I've been
running 2D as a workaround, but the problem occurs whether or not 2D is
installed. (Of course, if 2D is running, it can't occur, since Compiz
isn't running in such a case.)

[Bug 800222] [NEW] Intermittent freeze - UI won't respond to clicks or keypresses

2011-06-21 Thread Scott Severance
Public bug reported:

Since this isn't a crash, I don't think I can get apport traces, and
since I can't predict when the freeze will occur, it's difficult to get
other real-time info. I don't really know what kind of additional info
would be useful in this report. I'll be glad to attempt to supply any
requested info, though.

[Bug 769866] Re: tab completion no longer escapes filenames

2011-05-10 Thread Scott Severance
** Tags removed: amd64 i386

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: bash

In maverick, lucid, and other even way older releases, I could use tab
completion on a filename with characters with special meaning to the
  shell (e.g. spaces):

  matt@lemmankinan:/tmp/complete-test$ ls
  File with spaces.txt
  matt@lemmankinan:/tmp/complete-test$ mv File\ with\ spaces.txt ..
(on second line, type mv Ftab ..

However, in natty, this is broken for many (though strangely not all)
  commands:

  matt@sampo:/tmp/complete-test$ ls
  File with spaces.txt
  matt@sampo:/tmp/complete-test$ mv File with spaces.txt ..
mv: cannot stat `File': No such file or directory
mv: cannot stat `with': No such file or directory
mv: cannot stat `spaces.txt': No such file or directory
  (again, typing mv Ftab ..

If I start with a quote, e.g. mv 'Ftab .. that will work.

There's also an additional problem with directory names. If I e.g.
mkdir -p abc/def/ghi and try to move the above file, if I tab-complete
the abc directory, it will end with a space instead of a slash, so I
cannot complete further directories. Again, this works just fine in
  older releases.

[Bug 608515] Re: Can't establish audio or video calls

2010-12-16 Thread Scott Severance
@Scott Lockwood: Are you using 10.10? This bug is currently marked
invalid (see Omer's latest post for details). If you're experiencing
this in 10.10, please re-open this bug.

I personally would love to test this, but unrelated issues prevent me
from upgrading to 10.10. I think I'll just have to stick with 10.04 for
a while. At any rate, if this is still an issue in 10.10, it'd be good
to know.

Re: [Bug 240599] Re: Doesn't install GConf keys

2010-09-14 Thread Scott Severance
Yes, this happens in Lucid. However, I don't agree that this is a Yelp
bug. The .deb should make GConf entries where appropriate. Users
shouldn't have to read help in order to take advantage of the GConf
entries, especially since in every other program I know of, GConf
stuff isn't document in the Yelp help. It's documented through the
GConf schema.

[Bug 608515] Re: Can't establish audio or video calls

2010-07-25 Thread Scott Severance
@desiKn:

That doesn't explain why:

a) video works if I place a video call to myself (i.e., not going over the
network); and
b) audio calls don't work.

Your link points to bug 585151, which appears to be entirely unrelated
to this one. I only have a single video device (/dev/video0) and no TV
card or second camera or other complicating device.
