Re: Adjusting what fstypes df displays
I agree with being able to customize this and Bryce's solution is easy to work with (either profile.d or a df config in /etc). We use tmpfs to create ramdisks on the fly as part of our video analytics solution (megh.com), and need to monitor the tmpfs we create. [Bug 1577927] Re: After upgrade, can no longer set tab titles
This was fixed upstream in 3.20 (with a rather nasty commit message), but even on 3.28 it is not working in Ubuntu 18.04. Re: Proposal: Let's drop i386
I've been following this thread for a while, and have some questions. Are we talking about dropping Ubuntu x86 images or i386 packages from the repo? If the former, I don't see an issue here, as the subs (Lubuntu, core, etc) can still build release images. But if Ubuntu is dropping i386 packages, that brings up a huge issue with software compatibility, at a very bad time (at least for me and the projects I support). I work with FPGA accelerators, both at Intel and for a startup. A majority of the tools we use (Quartus, Modelsim in particular) only support 32bit (and very old at that). The companies developing these tools are all too happy to ONLY support Redhat Enterprise 6 (and barely RHEL 7), and so far refuse to budge. A wide variety of our customer base prefer Ubuntu and have their infrastructure geared towards this, so I have had to be very creative in getting everything working for them (adding 32bit support, swapping out the linker that ships with these tools, etc). If Ubuntu drops i386 all together, this can have a major impact on the whole FPGAaaS model. Outside of that, I also have a large collection of older software (games mainly) that are still fun, but also 32bit only. Dropping i386 would render them entirely useless, or force people away from Ubuntu. The real issue is the costs of maintainership. I know for a fact that Ubuntu uses automation for everything in disposable VMs, so the overhead is minimal (far less than ArmHF or Armel). That leaves the FTBFS issues, which if it is in Universe and obscure (Haskell), can safely be ignored or reported upstream. Main should be very well supported on all architectures the packages upstream were designed for, so that should minimize issues. This leaves image and installer testing. My vote is to drop the images (except core as it is very useful for embedded projects which Intel still sells 32bit only chips for IoT. [Bug 1368094] Re: Please backport openjdk-8 from Xenial to Trusty
So, how does Ubuntu continue to test in their environment, if they are not supporting OpenJDK-8 in 14.04? Do they no longer use Jenkins? Because the current Jenkins LTS releases require Jave 8 for their slaves. [Bug 1434273] Re: oem-config fails to prompt for password

[Bug 1434273] Re: oem-config fails to prompt for password
Someone indicated that they need more details to reproduce this, so here it goes: Download the netboot image from http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists /trusty-updates/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/mini.iso and make a bootable usb stick from it using universal usb installer from http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ (Windows) or what ever method your system supports (can be reproduced in a VM, leaving this initial install as an exercise to the user). I use PXE to start the installation. For boot parameters, use the following (syslinux.cfg): append initrd=/live/trusty/initrd.gz nomce ks=http://myserver.com/preseed/trusty-ks.cfg locale=en_US console-setup/ask_detect=false console-setup/layoutcode=us vga=normal DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer -- debconf/priority=critical (see trusty-ks.cfg attached). During install, the system will prompt asking to confirm NOT to install grub (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer- netboot-images/+bug/1309349). After rebooting, the system will eventually start oem-config, prompting for language, locale, keyboard setup, username, and hostname (defaults to kickseed if the above install was done). It will NOT prompt for user password. Instead, it generates a new user with the SAME PASSWORD as the preseed config. ** Attachment added: "trusty-ks.cfg" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/oem-config/+bug/1434273/+attachment/4646836/+files/trusty-ks.cfg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1434273 Title: oem-config fails to prompt for password To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/oem-config/+bug/1434273/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1438275] Re: GRUB_RECORDFAIL_TIMEOUT prevents servers from booting
Maybe instead of 'degrading the experience', you can just document the change so that people using this OS for testing systems can automate around it without having to resort to serial port output scanning and lab wiring contortion. In our test environment, we often see a MCE that forces the system to reboot (even with nomce on the kernel cmdline). This often causes the system to reboot and sit at grub. We worked around the issue by adding this to /etc/default/grub: GRUB_TERMINAL='console serial GRUB_SERIAL_COMMAND=serial --unit=0 --speed=115200 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1 Then we can monitor and automate the serial console for when grub gets stuck. [Bug 1434273] [NEW] oem-config fails to prompt for password
Public bug reported: Running a custom server installation (base server, openssh-server, build tools, our own SDK in /opt), we have oem-config install as part of the preseeded network installation. Post-installation, we bypass oem-config (alt-F2) and log in with a user created in the preseed installation. After testing, we ensure oem-config will run (touch /var/lib/oem- config/run) and reboot one last time to see that it starts ok, then we power off the system, box it up and ship it to customers. We have recently had several customers report that oem-config doesn't prompt for a user password when prompting for a user, and in fact, when I tested it here, I discovered that the password hash in /etc/shadow matched the user password created by the preseed. [Bug 1180880] [NEW] Crash when starting oem-config on Ubuntu Server 12.04 amd64.
Public bug reported: After installing Ubuntu Server 12.04 (and 12.04.2) AMD64 edition, then running oem-config-prepare after post-install updates and rebooting, the system hangs during reboot. Adding debug-oem-config doesn't produce any new information. Recovery only possible by booting in rescue mode from the installation cd (or bootable USB) then removing /var/lib/oem- config/run and rebooting. apport-retrace reports the following from the crash report: root@atp-spare1:/home/lab/bogl-0.1.18# apport-retrace -g /var/crash/_usr_bin_bterm.0.crash GNU gdb (Ubuntu/Linaro 7.4-2012.04-0ubuntu2.1) 7.4-2012.04 Copyright (C) 2012 Free Software Foundation, Inc. In particular, since it tries its best to install as much as it can under the constraint that it never installs new packages or removes installed ones, it will carry merrily on without installing any new Recommends introduced by the upgrade set, and you will never hear about them again unless some other package starts recommending the same target packages. [Bug 967091] Re: Wrong tint in flash when it uses video acceleration
I just heard about this bug, thought it was an old monitor I had, but wasn't. Now here's the rub. I have an x86 system that started showing this issue when I upgraded to Precise from Lucid (32bit only for old reasons - will reimage when I get a chance to backup 500G worth of development stuff). My system is a Core2Quad with nVidia 9600GT, and I have dual monitors setup using nVidia's Separate X Screens configuration. On my main monitor, I get this issue. On the other monitor, I don't. Video accelleration is active on both. I tried installing libvdpau1_0.4.1-6ubuntu1_i386.deb, but it doesn't appear to have changed anything for me. Re: Releasing Alphas and Betas without freezing
Thought I would chime in with my thoughts on freezes, snapshot testing, and QA in general. Freezes: When I was testing the Arm images, there were times when I would go for weeks without an image. And if I remember correctly, there was a period during Natty where there were no images between milestones due to pool skew. And there were image specific changes being made at the time (jasper-initramfs, Ubiquity/oem-config, etc). When those changes can't be tested without an image, failures become critical at milestone, causing a lot of needless stress. Manual QA: Having been in a QA role for most of my career in computers (+25 years), I can site areas where automated QA can and will fail. Sure, repetitive tests can be automated, especially server stacks and background libraries. But how do you automate testing a GUI for usability (Evolution STILL has option windows that flow past the bottom of my netbook screen). Plus there are tests that find the oddball combination that most developers don't think users will select (enabling autologin encrypted home directory during install was found this way). When developing automation scripts for tests, they really should be designed to test on all platforms, not just simulated/virtualized environments. Otherwise others have to constantly reinvent the wheel to run the same test on systems that don't support that test environment. Snapshot retention: I set up my own internal mirror so that I could keep daily images between milestones. This way if I missed something during daily testing and we needed to determine how far back it went, I had a complete image history to go back to (Mono/Banshee in Oneiric). This also helped to determine if one package or a combination of package updates caused issues. As to testing 15 arm images during milestones, my secret was to take a daily image for one platform (panda) and focus on it over a period of 2-3 days, testing everything. Most bugs in applications there were the same on all arm platforms. That left hardware specific testing on other platforms to be done only when testing kernel/xorg updates, or (in the case of Mono not supporting SMP on arm) reproducing a bug found on the main test environment. I would also try to reproduce the bug on x86/amd64 to determine if the bug was arch specific. Often times, an application bug found on the panda would also be found on other architectures. While I no longer have the time to test Ubuntu images, I am saddened by the failures I do see on a daily basis on the LTS release (anyone try to run a remote desktop lately using rdesktop?). These issues should have been found prior to release. -- -- Tobin Davis The cutting edge is getting rather dull. -- Andy Purshottam -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

[Bug 971608] [NEW] Unable to create blank lvm volume in preseed install
Public bug reported: I am trying to create a preseeded netboot install that will create a couple of blank partitions that can be used for testing purposes. The partition scheme is as follows: sda1 256M ext3 /boot sda2 20G blank #Test-Primary sda3 extended sda5 LVM VG0 VG0/Root 10G ext4 / VG0/Swap 4G swap VG0/Test-LVM 20G blank #Test-LVM My recipe is this: d-i partman-auto/expert_recipe string \ panda-pool :: \ 100 150 256 ext3\ $primary{ } $bootable{ }\ method{ format } format { } \ use_filesystem{ } filesystem{ ext3 }\ mountpoint{ /boot } \ label{ BOOT } \ . \ 5000 160 2 ext4 \ $lvmignore{ } \ $primary{ } \ method{ keep } \ . \ 1 250 12000 ext4\ $defaultignore{ } \ $lvmok{ } \ lv_name{ Root } \ method{ format } format{ } \ use_filesystem{ } filesystem{ ext4 }\ mountpoint{ / } \ . \ 4000 512 4100 linux-swap\ $defaultignore{ } \ $lvmok{ } \ lv_name{ swap } \ method{ swap } format{ }\ . \ 5000 1 10 ext4 \ $defaultignore{ } \ $lvmok{ } \ method{ keep } \ . \ . The problem is, netboot will prompt me with an alert saying No file system is specified for partition #1 of LVM VG eilt0, LV keep_1. If I add use_filesystem{ } filesystem{ ext4 } \ to the blank lvm partition, then it complains about not being formatted. If I change the method to format it, then it wants a mountpoint. The idea is to leave it unmounted so that it can be used for testing different filesystems, filesystem encryption, etc. Having to go through all this defeats the purpose. The base documentation at http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=d-i /debian-installer.git;a=blob_plain;f=doc/devel/partman-auto- recipe.txt;hb=HEAD indicates this should be possible, although the documentation is very sparse. Other google searches show examples where users have created udeb packages to replace partman entirely. This is also not an option. ** Affects: partman-auto-lvm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/971608 Title: Unable to create blank lvm volume in preseed install To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-auto-lvm/+bug/971608/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 968486] [NEW] No application icons on unity dash on initial login.
Public bug reported: This may be the wrong package, but on initial boot with the armhf preinstalled images for omap mx5, no icons are present in the dash, and the search function doesn't list any applications when entered. Logging out and logging in fixes this issue. Steps to reproduce: Download the Precise Beta 2 preinstaled image for either omap or mx5, flash to SD and boot on the appropriate system. During oem-config, when prompted, select auto-login. Once oem-config runs its course, the user will be logged in. [Bug 966858] Re: [power]: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in gnome_rr_screen_get_dpms_mode()
I did some further investigating on this, and I don't thing this is a dup of bug #956824. This bug occurs on the preinstalled images during oem-config setup. Once logged in, the bug never reoccurs. Also, I hacked the Beta 2 image to update to gnome-settings- daemon_3.4.0-0ubuntu2_armhf.deb (which fixed bug #956824), and still see the error during the same phase. Running apport-retrace on the crash file doesn't produce much helpful info (corrupt stack). Trying manual debugging from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash (although since this happens only during oem-config, not sure how far I will get). Oh, and don't bother waiting for the retracers. They don't work on armel/armhf bugs. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/966858 Title: [power]: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in gnome_rr_screen_get_dpms_mode() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/966858/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 965508] [NEW] tasksel not preseedable in oem-config
Public bug reported: In current oem-config (2.10.2), setting tasksel tasksel/tasks multiselect openssh-server fails to install openssh-server, or other tasks. This is highly valuable to preinstalled-image automation testing, as otherwise the only option is to login through serial console, which isn't enabled by default on desktop images (only server). [Bug 164233] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] Opening pdf with smooth gradient in Evince displays striped
I retested this on a theory (see 164233.tar.gz). Test1.pdf is from the steps above, and produces a chunky result as described. test2.pdf however was created using the print to file method of creating pdf files, which I believe is a completely different library, and it looks right (at least on this system). This leads me to believe that the issue is in /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/libpdffilterlo.so or OpenOffice/LibreOffice. ** Attachment added: 164233.tar.gz https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/164233/+attachment/2901065/+files/164233.tar.gz ** Also affects: libreoffice (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/164233 Title: [Upstream] [hardy] Opening pdf with smooth gradient in Evince displays striped To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/evince/+bug/164233/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 747229] Re: weird color change during oem-config debconf package removal step in serial installs
Thought I had posted my test notes, guess not. Here is what I have done so far: Used a daily image from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily-preinstalled. Ran through entire config process. Observed color change at oem-config-remove step. Logged in and installed the necessary oem-config packages that get removed after configuring. Manually ran oem-config-remove (shell wrapper step), observed correct colors during oem-config-remove process. I then started looking through the code, but got lost very quickly (shell wrapper for python wrapper for other wrappers). The color change is somewhere between oem-config-debconf and oem-config- remove steps. Not sure where (someone that knows the code could probably find it easily). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/747229 Title: weird color change during oem-config debconf package removal step in serial installs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/747229/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
