[Bug 331580] [NEW] Fails to start in recent jaunty releases

2009-02-19 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: saods9

There was a recent update to the tk libraries, and since then ds9 no
longer starts, with the following error message:

version conflict for package Tcl: have 8.4, need 8.5

[Bug 317688] [NEW] ecb breaks customize

2009-01-15 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ecb

M-x customize works fine with a clean emacs install (and no emacs
setup)

Running M-x ecb-activate starts up ecb as expected, however running
any customize command (customize/customize-group/customize-appropos
etc.) causes a new empty buffer to be created, with the name you would
expect for that buffer, however the actual customize ui is dumped into
whatever the currently open buffer was, so the customize buffer is
empty, and it instead actually modifies whatever file you had open.

[Bug 270377] Re: content of window do not redraw automatically (intrepid)

2009-01-13 Thread Tom Badran
Just done a fresh intrepid install + updates and im getting the same
problem, absolutely no tweaking done to x/compiz/whatever settings, just
a fresh install. Pretty much every single time i run an aptitude command
in gnome-terminal i get this, occasionally get it in firefox, and
frequently get it when running emacs. If i go to the appearence settings
and set visual effects to None the problem dissapears.

I also tried with the updates from -proposed (nvidia 180 and i think
there was a compiz update too) and the problem is at least as bad, if
not worse.

Single head setting on laptop, 1280x800 resolution screen.

Nvidia card info from nvidia-settings:

GeForce 8400M GS
PCI Express 16x

Any more info that would be useful just ask and i'll post it here.

driver
[ 134.719868] We got 50d:121 class=0 proto=0

Looking at the patch now, should it not be:

if (id-bDeviceClass != USB_CLASS_WIRELESS_CONTROLLER
id-bDeviceProtocol != 1)

It looks to my untrained eye as if we are doing the goto outin the
case of it actually being a pegasus usb network device, rather than
_not_ a pegasus usb network device?

[Bug 192425] [NEW] Logitech MX Revolution mouse doesnt move pointer correctly

2008-02-16 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

Since upgrading to hardy, my mx revolution mouse no longer works
correctly. If i move the mouse, the pointer doesnt move, then a few
seconds later jumps in the direction i moved the mouse. I can plug in an
older usb optical mouse and that works fine. I used to use this in my
xorg.conf:

Section InputDevice
Identifier Logitech MX Revolution
Driver evdev
Option Phys usb-*/input0
Option Name Logitech USB Receiver
Option CorePointer
EndSection

However I have completely reset my xorg.conf using dpkg-reconfigure
-phigh and attached that to the bug report. The only customisation of
this xorg.conf file has been for dual screening, and setting the
keyboard to gb.

Re: [Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2008-02-06 Thread Tom Badran
Yes, if you move things a few pixels apart they keep their position, it gets
broken again if one of them (normally the clock) gets big enough to go over
the space, as this happens with day/month changes. It also seems to only
happen when on a screen which doesnt have a position of +0+0 i.e a monitor
on the right, doesnt matter whether primary or secondary.

Its not always the clock that changes position, its often the volume/systray
for me.

[Bug 140511] Belkin USB bluetooth device loads wrong module

2007-09-17 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: module-init-tools

I have a usb bluetooth adapter (Belkin F8T012xx1, FCC: K7SF8t012, IC:
3632A-F8T012) identified by lsusb as:

Bus 003 Device 003: ID 050d:0121 Belkin Components F5D5050 100Mbps
Ethernet

By default the 'pegasus' driver is loaded, however this causes
subsequent lsusb commands to hang forever, and actually causes a loud
tone to play from the pc speaker, and the system to hang if i unplug and
reattach the device. It also doesnt allow the bluetooth functionality to
work.

If i blacklist pegasus in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist then it works
correctly.

Obviously a global blacklist on pegasus is not the right solution, but i
have no idea how to fix this properly for one device.

[Bug 135115] Re: tracker causing very high disk useage/thrashing

2007-09-11 Thread Tom Badran
I've done a fresh gutsy install (tribe 5 + immediately updating) with a
new home directory too (i wanted to split my / /home and /usr/local
partitions anyway, so it seemed like a good time) and i dont seem to be
having any problems now.

In response to Jamie, the files in .cache/tracker were around
100-200megs each, as opposed to gigs.

The only difference i know for certain between a fresh install and what
i had however, was that i did have a n extensive wine directory before
(although it was marked as not to be indexed)

I'll leave the bug open for the next few days, and post some more info
based on jamie's hints for debugging. If it doesn't reappear ill close

Jamie, that bug pretty much describes my entire experience with gutsy up
until now, and oddly like metioned in that bug disabling esd actually
helps too.

It does seem that there is a serious problem with 2.6.22 with regards to
io/cpu scheduling, i've never been very happy with gutsy in that regard.
I do have a very powerful machine, and notice regular problems (which
were extremely exacerbated by tracker hence filing the bug here).

[Bug 135115] tracker causing very high disk useage/thrashing

2007-08-27 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

I've been tracking gutsy for a few months now, recently i noticed my
disk just seems to be constantly in use (its not very quiet in this
machine). The only things that seem to be running according to top are
trackerd processes. They are reniced to 19 which seems sensible, but the
disk useage is just crazy.

Doing a full dd dump of the entire disk takes roughly 15minutes.
However the tracker processes just seem to run for ages (1hour) and
cause the disk to be constantly in use for this whole time. Every now
and then the system just seems to stall and things that take 1 second
usually (opening a terminal window is a good test of this) end up taking
approximately 10 seconds. During these stalls the whole interface seems
to be unresponsive too.

I dont know exactly whats going on that causes this, but the only
consistent element when investigating this has been 3 trackerd process,
niced at 19, using roughly 9% cpu each (although this cpu use percentage
does jump around alot, varying from 1% to 10%).

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2007-08-27 Thread Tom Badran
I can confirm im getting the same problem. All my applets are locked,
and anything on the right hand side of top or bottom panels appears in a
random order on login, no matter how much i reset their positions etc.

This is on a dual screen setup with two 1680x1050 monitors, primary on
right, secondary on left.

[Bug 132654] Depends directly on ttf-bitstream-vera

2007-08-15 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

The package depends directly on a font package, namely ttf-bitstream-

I cant see a reason why opengl bindings would need to depend directly on

[Bug 102807] Re: fullscreen/wine bug

2007-08-15 Thread Tom Badran
There are are also a lot of old proprietary programs that need this. For
instance old programs statically linked against FTLK need these
workarounds, as they set fullscreen by just making the window the size
of the desktop, and setting its position to 0,0 (this was long long
before the window manager hints existed obviously). Without the
workarounds, they get positioned to not overlap panels instead.

[Bug 130490] Re: No usb disks at all mount [gutsy]

2007-08-06 Thread Tom Badran
I did some removal of various hal/udev config files, and reinstalled
those packages and it seems to be working again. I had never edited any
of that stuff by hand, so my guess would be its either some cruft left
over from another package, that wasnt removed by apt, or something in

[Bug 130490] No usb disks at all mount [gutsy]

2007-08-05 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-mount

This seems to be a different problem to #121203 as i cant even mount
things through nautilus. I dont quite know which bit of the stack
(gnome-mount/hal/udev/whatever other bits are involved) this could be
from, so im filling here in the hope it will be pushed to the correct
package if its a gnome-mount bug.

It affects both my usb key, and my ipod, as well as my n770, essentially
every usb disk i have to try, and all of which have worked in the past,
including on earlier versions of gutsy.

Pluggin devices in does nothing at all, nothing comes up on screen,
nothing in Places-Computer. However lsub always shows the device.

[Bug 106739] Re: Tag editing in rhythmbox strips all tags completely

2007-08-01 Thread Tom Badran
I've spent a good few hours testing tagging with multiple and single
files with the latest rhythmbox in gutsy. I have a collection of about
1300 songs, in various formats including mp3 and ogg. I've retagged at
least on field on every song in my collection, and the new tags are
loaded fine by other programs too. In no case of multiple editing a
single tag (i.e changing the genre of a whole artist over multiple
albums) did i get any problems at all.

[Bug 119213] Re: Icons in GNOME Panel 2.18.1 change order

2007-07-31 Thread Tom Badran
Adding some more info, mine was closed as a duplicate and didnt realise
you needed more.

The problem i am having is that right justified panel applets are
rearaning order on login sometimes, the worst two offenders being the
clock and notification applets swapping, and the waste bin/workspace
switcher swapping. This is without desktop effects enabled, so even
though that is mentioned in the first report i dont thing that matter.
Also, this only started happening on a gutsy upgrade. On some logins,
they are displayed in the correct order, and other times not.

Attached a screen shot of the trash/workspace switcher being the wrong
way (by default the trash icon is on the right, with the workspace
switcher on the left, in this instance they have swapped for no reason).

Public bug reported:

I have a dual screen setup, with the gnome panels on the first screen.

Oddly, i can change resolution frequently and the order is maintained,
its purely when i log in, and seems to only afffect applets that are

visualisation running in fullscreen, and then switching the option to
change screens doesnt work correctly. There are at least 2 ways it
fails, on switch on my setup will cause the window to move to the
correct screen, but it wont be fullscreen, and the visualistaion becomes
invisible. Switching the other way just causes nothing to happen.

However it is possible to workaround by switching to embedded mode and
back to fullscreen.

[Bug 35836] Re: Hold packages

2007-07-06 Thread Tom Badran
It is possible to pin package versions, but its not in update-manager
(many package functions are not, its a really simple update tool). As
far as gui support for this feature goes, synaptic is capable of doing
this (Package-Lock Version).

[Bug 94767] x11-common conflicts with xephem

2007-03-22 Thread Tom Badran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Why is this? As far as i'm aware no version of ubuntu has ever included
a packaged xephem (i believe the license prohibits this, but iamnal).
This means i can not install a package of xephem i have prepared myself,
which in fact i used to use fine on an ubuntu edgy install. If there is
no justification for the conflict, then i request it be removed, or made
to conflict with a version = whatever has been supplied in the past
that requires this conflict if my previous asserstion is incorrect.

My assumption would be this was added to deal with broken upgrades from
someone who has manually installed the debian (very very old version)
packaged xephem, but i would assume that was indirectly due to a
dependcy on a motif library, probably lesstif1 as ubuntu feisty only
supplies lesstif2

FYI thi is on x11-common 1:7.2-0ubuntu8 on feisty

Thanks, feel free to contact me if you need anymore information, access
to my xephem package source etc (although again my understanding of the
license makes this appear prohibited)

I know there are already other bugs about pitvi not starting, this seems
to be a different trace to the X window system error however.
