I fixed this by entering into firefox's about:config and changing the
value in keyword.URL to

http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ighl=enrlz==btnI=I'm%20Feeling%20Luckymeta=lr%3Dq=

If someone has the default value it may be helpful to post it here.

Entering google.com WILL re-direct, just words with no .ext fail I think

I've had this error for some time, I (semi-)fixed by toggling jpeg under
the image loading section in compiz config manager.

There remains some flicker when entering/exiting windows and some redraw
things outside the GL application but it seems to fix the major
annoyance of this.
