[Bug 199960] Re: error starting GNOME Settings Daemon
I'm not sure if my issue is with the settings daemon or not. I am running Hardy on my laptop and desktop. My desktop had feisty AMD64 so I did a clean install of Hardy i386 so I could use the programs that haven't made it to the 64-bit architecture. My laptop was just upgraded to Hardy since it was already running Feisty i386. My desktop hasn't had any problems but my laptop has had this issue since the upgrade. I switched just after the official release so I have been just dealing with it for over a month now. I have applied all updates that have shown up thinking that a fix was coming sooner or later. My laptop has never had XGL installed and compiz has always been disabled because my on- board graphics card doesn't work with compiz. Yet I still have this issue where my gnome session won't start unless I change the session to gnome failsafe (or terminal failsafe and type 'gnome-session'). When I try to log in normally I briefly see a flash of a terminal screen and catch something at the bottom about startup scripts and the screen goes black and stays there until I get frustrated and manually turn off the power. Luckily I have still been able to use it in gnome failsafe mode or I might have destroyed my laptop by now. So if this issue is fixed how do I do it? None of the released updates have made a difference and nothing here has worked except for the failsafe terminal start. [Bug 172890] Re: No system events sounds after login
I still don't have any sound. I even did a partial upgrade to hardy because after I installed just the new kernel and then reverted back after that failed my update manager kept giving me updates that said they couldn't install them without a partial upgrade. Still no system sound, but I can watch movies and listen to music just fine and website sounds as well as the sounds set for events on pidgin work fine. Also I do get a strange sound error when I try to open an internet audio stream with audacious. I am going to try the esound package. -- No system events sounds after login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172890 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I ran sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules, but I'm not quite sure what to do after that for the updated ALSA version. If you could enlighten me as to what I need to do with the backport modules that would be great. I also downloaded the .iso and will tinker with it tomorrow. -- No system sound after GDM login, Feisty sounds worked fine, MSI laptop model: MS-1011, sound card: SIS si7012 chip: Realtek ALC655 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172890 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Alright I tried the new kernel and still no system sounds. Also I found that with the new kernel I didn't have wireless automatically. I am currently usin the Pulse Audio driver so my program sounds work. I just tried to change it back to ALSA and got this error: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: resource busy or not available. [Bug 172890] Re: No system sound after GDM login, Feisty sounds worked fine, MSI laptop model: MS-1011, sound card: SIS si7012 chip: Realtek ALC655
I have spent hours messing with System-Preferences-Sound. On Feisty I had several custom sounds I was using and I want to use them with Gutsy. my volume is at 100% and not muted. My custom sound files play fine in Pidgin, Audacious, Mplayer, ...etc. I have been through the Debugging Sound Problems page many times with no success. I don't hear the login sound, I hear the sound that plays when my GDM first appears but I had to change the GDM configuration file to get that to work. I have helped both of my brothers install Gutsy on their systems (on a laptop and desktop) and neither of them have this problem yet, but neither of them have my chipset. [Bug 172890] No system sound after GDM login, program sounds work, problem started after clean gutsy install from feisty, MSI laptop model: MS-1011, sound card: SIS si7012 chip: Realtek ALC655
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22 I recently did a clean install of Gutsy from Feisty. My sound worked flawlessly in Feisty, but since the install of Gutsy it only works for programs and the first sound that plays when the GDM pops up. Once I am logged into my system none of the desktop sounds work. I have spent several hours probing the net for a fix. I have installed Pulse Audio, OSS, and ESD to replace ALSA with no effect. When I open System Preferences Sound I can change any of the options to any of the drivers I have installed and when I hit the Test button the test sound plays indicating that the driver is working, but still so system sounds. When I try to run a VM with VMware server I get an error that the sound device is unavailable and the VM will start with the sound turned off. [Bug 162336] system sounds not working
Public bug reported: I did a clean install from feisty to gutsy. After the install I started to apply the custom sounds I was using on feisty but after selecting them in System Preferences Sound Sounds Tab I tried to test the sound by pressing the Play button and nothing happened. I rebooted my system and the only sound that worked was the sound that plays when the GDM first loads. I managed to make some changes in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to get the login sounds working but the others don't. When I double click the sound file it loads into Totem and plays just fine. My movies and music play fine in mplayer and audacious but I get device errors when I try to record sound with audacity. I have spent several hours trying to fix this issue with workarounds and fixes I have found online. I have installed every package that Pulse Audio, OSS, ALSA, and ,ESD have to offer. I have tried switching between all of them and each one the Test button plays the testing tone but my system sounds still won't play. The only error I get in changing the sound mixers is when I test the sound capture, on every option I get Failed to construct test pipeline for 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat'. I am running an MSI laptop with an AMD 64 3400+, 2 gigs of ram, and an SIS chipset. I was running Feisty amd64 but my clean install is Gutsy i386 since it has more compatible applications. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- system sounds not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162336 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 112520] Re: Can't change port vino runs on
I am very new to linux(about 3 weeks now), my mom wants me to administer all of her computers and network for her but she lives over an hour away. I heard of VNC and found that feisty has a VNC server built in with vino at System - Preferences - Remote Desktop. I am about to add a second machine to her network that will soon be followed by at least 2 more. I need to be able to access all of them from home or my laptop. The simple solution since I don't know much about linux(but am the top computer tech in my family) is to just use vino but it is very basic and only lets you grant access and set a password. I have spent several hours scanning the internet for a manual to tell me how to do it with no luck. Anything that could be done to at least make it usable with a network would be great. -- Can't change port vino runs on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
