[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps)
I think it is interesting that KDE4 doesn't seem to have this problems again (GNOME Panel icons move apparently randomly on session start in some situations) at least with Wine and some other apps which have a problem with Gnome/GTK. And the icons are transparent around and I mean really transparent since the default theme has a transparent panel and not just a color gradient. -- Notification area icon wrongly rendered/uses bg_color as a background (multiple apps) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/403135 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 303697] Re: [fglrx] vsync issues - screen tearing unrelated to compiz
You are right that tearing appears even without Compiz but this could be circumvented by using OpenGL video output and activating vsync for everything in the AMD Controlcenter. [Bug 303697] Re: [fglrx] vsync issues - screen tearing unrelated to compiz
Of course it is a driver issue. I just meant the to my knowledge not circumventable issue appears in combination with Compiz. Nevertheless I have given up hope that this bug will be fixed in the near futures. This issue is known since several years and it seems that some serious changes are needed for this to be fixed otherwise they would have already done it. The good thing is that except of a proper power management the free driver has all the features for my card 4870 now. Maybe it renders 3D not as fast as the fglrx but it just works and doesn't have all this annoying bugs (which never seem to get fixed). -- [fglrx] vsync issues - screen tearing unrelated to compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303697 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 535108] Re: Hide console messages while Plymouth is running
Yes, I have the same problem on all my systems but there is an easy workaround. Afaik the problem is that the initramfs scripts only put Plymouth and obviously kms in the initrd if cryptsetup is installed to ask for the password with a proper screen. So if you install cryptsetup everything looks great and professional and kms is run directly after grub. If it isn't installed you first get the standard resolution, some flickering and often some fsck messages before KMS and Plymouth start. I think that they do it because of the boot startup time but I personally would have no problem to loose 2 seconds or something like that if it looks more professional. Atm the boot experience doesn't look so well so I would put Plymouth (and KMS) in initrd all the time. With it the boot looks like on MacOsX or something like that. -- Hide console messages while Plymouth is running https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/535108 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 540816] [NEW] Plymouth isn't shown directly after using shutdown in X so it looks like a crash
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: plymouth This isn't serious but annoying. If you use the shutdown function in X it closes and you see the console with all the usual text and error messages which looks like something has crashed. After one second or something like that Plymouth kicks in and shows the usual boot/shutdown screen. Isn't it possible to let X directly change to Plymouth on shutdown (at least with KMS)? It would look much more coherent and professional. As soon as this and Bug #535108 is fixed Ubuntu would look really coherent, professional and great and a normal user would never see annoying console messages. This is what the whole boot experience blueprint is about I think. [Bug 540829] [NEW] Lucid boot screen is misleading because it looks like a progress bar
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-artwork Lucid boot screen is misleading because it looks like a progress bar. I mean it gives the impression that the startup time is very fast because it looks like a progress bar until the red/orange icons start changing back to white. Than I personally have felt a little bit framed. Not to mention that the change from red/orange to white looks a little bit weird imho. I think it would be better to have one or two red/orange icon/s which move/s a long from left to right so it doesn't give the impression that it represents the boot process but everyone knows that something is going on. Thanks for the info. I just thought since the change from Plymouth to X is directly possible in Lucid the opposite would be too. Maybe Plymouth can run the whole time on one console or it is possible to change to a black screen from X but like I said it is not so important. [Bug 48734] Re: Home permissions too open
I also think that one public directory like Windows or maybe even MacOsX have per default would be the best compromise. I mean this could be created in the home directory and a link added to every new user desktop like in case of the example folder. With this sharing is even easier than with the current situation and others get their privacy. Of course changing permissions is easy to evade through booting a live environment but we are not talking about professionals. I mean basically every security system could be breached but the effort and expectation is important I think. For example afaik if a user logs in with an encrypted home directory it could be accessed from everyone as long as the user is logged in which is possible through user switching. In this case the directory permission would also help to protect the files. Even if it would be not the case someone could boot a live environment and install a keylogger or similar. -- Home permissions too open https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48734 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 538357] [NEW] package index files should be also compressed with lzma
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: dpkg Since apt already should support the lzma compression method ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/dpkg-lzma ) it would make sense to also compress the package index files which currently are compressed with bzip2 and gz. For example: http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/universe/binary-i386/ Even if the gain is only 10% (although it is often more especially with -9) it might make a difference since this files are usually downloaded every day. For a stable version the effect isn't that big since only the update/security/backports files are updated and not every day but with a slow connection it might have an effect since they are downloaded in the background and might impact the user experience. Not to mention that lzma decompresses often more than twice as fast as bzip2. http://tukaani.org/lzma/benchmarks.html For arm or platforms with low memory bzip2 or gz could be used. [Bug 453579] Re: in-place corruption of large files *without fsck or reboot* reported with linux 2.6.31-14.46 on ext4
Improperly rebooting runs the risk of breaking your system on *any* filesystem. Sorry, but this is not true imho. I have never had a similar problem with ext3. Yes, there are some file systems like XFS which just deletes the data of a whole file if the computer crashes or is restarted but I guess the goal should be especially with a journaling file system to prevent errors like this. Not to mention that the size of the file is zero with XFS so you don't assume that everything is fine. Like I said there is no problem that after a hard reboot some shortly changed data is lost but this has to be diagnosed and dealt with through the file system so that no corrupt files are saved without even realizing it. -- in-place corruption of large files *without fsck or reboot* reported with linux 2.6.31-14.46 on ext4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/453579 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 453579] Re: corruption of large files reported with linux 2.6.31-14.46 on ext4
I also had this issue but I can't really nail it down. The explanation that it has only something to do with Kernel 2.6.32-rc* makes sense. I used it several times on my two systems. I got different md5 for the same file and if I played a video which was affected the player stops and the hard disks runs all the time and the systems hangs for a minute or more. It looks like a part was missing and the driver was searching for it. I even shot down my whole testing system. I have a small testing partition to test Linux outside the VM. After some xorg edgers installation and restart I got an fsck problem which asks for confirmation, some inode problem. After confirmation it asks again several times so I run it with -y which delete a lot of files. Afterwards the system didn't boot anymore. I have installed grub on the partition instead of the MBR, maybe that resulted under some special circumstances in this problem but I have done this since a long time and never had problem with it. So actually using of 2.6.32 makes more sense since I use ext4 since quite some time. I haven't had a problem since sticking with the default Kernel but this problems doesn't just pop up.
