Re: [Bug 1029149] Re: gparted automatically starts scanning all devices slowly and never completing the task

2012-07-31 Thread warren
Melchiaros,

I used a USB stick created using the Startup disk creator with the FAT32
single partition with 1gb persistence ext2. When I look at the USB stick
using gparted it shows only one partition. I am not certain that this bug
matches the bug you referred to 121943 since there was no external HD just
usb flash drive live medium. The bugs do seem similar with cpu 100% even
after gparted is closed. I did get ubuntu updates on the usb persistence
which seemed to clear up the gparted not functioning properly.

I hope this helps and is not too late.

[Bug 1029160] [NEW] screen corruption after Ubuntu boot splash lasting until Try Ubuntu

2012-07-25 Thread warren
Public bug reported:

1) Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha3 i386 (Live USB stick)
2) X.Org X Server 1.12.1.902 (1.12.2 RC 2) Graphics card ATI Radeon 9800
3) I expected not to have the screen corruption after the Ubuntu boot splash.
4) After the boot splash screen corruption of alternating white and black
horizantal line covered the display area. Then some of the screen cleared in
small boxed sections on both the left and right side of the display area. The
final phase is then a gray screen clear of screen corruption with the Try

[Bug 927515] Re: thunderbird uses excessive cpu power

2012-07-12 Thread Justin Warren
Some further info: My syslog was geting spammed with eCryptfs messages
as per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ecryptfs/+bug/911507, but only when
Thunderbird was in online mode.

The culprit was a zero length global-messages-db.sqlite-journal file
under .thunderbird. I'd copied my .thunderbird directory from my old
laptop (that wasn't using encrypted homedir) to the new laptop (which is
using encrypted homedir).

Moving the file out of the way stopped the eCryptfs spam, and dropped
CPU usage from about 70%+ to about 54%, which isn't melting the laptop.

Thunderbird has recreated the global-messages-db.sqlite-journal file,
and it now has non-zero length. I guess what it's doing now is more
normal.

[Bug 927515] Re: thunderbird uses excessive cpu power

2012-07-11 Thread Justin Warren
I only see this when working online. If I change to working offline, the
CPU usage drops to idle. I f I re-enable working online, the CPU spikes
again.

It appears to be related to loading/indexing mail from remote IMAP
mailserver that contains a lot of mail on a new install that hasn't
previously connected to the mailserver.

[Bug 999878] Re: [OptiPlex 780, Analog Devices AD1984A, Green Headphone Out, Front] No automute

2012-06-25 Thread Warren Brown
Thank you for following-up. The problem isn't with the internal mono
speaker, it is with the rear speaker jack. The rear speaker jack is not
muting when headphones are connected.

I think the internal mono speaker is already muted when speakers are
connected to the rear jack. It does not make sound when my speakers are
connected.

To answer the question directly, yes, please. Both the internal mono
speaker and the rear speaker jack should mute when headphones are
connected.

Cheers,
-Warren

[Bug 967091] Re: Wrong tint in flash when it uses video acceleration

I don't think that last bug edit is valid; the bug is in Flash's use of
the VDPAU API, and hence it is related to libvdpau acceleration not
video acceleration.

[Bug 657270] Re: Netstat not displaying all listening ports when using IPv4 and IPv6

2012-05-11 Thread Michael Warren
After doing more research, I believe this is because Apache is not using
the IPV6_V6ONLY flag when it binds to port 80. This allows the IPv6
socket to serve both IPv4 and IPv6 traffic. Since there is technically
only one listening socket, this is why netstat only shows the IPv6
socket.

Historically we could use netstat to see exactly what is listening, but
in the case of IPV6_V6ONLY, it's entirely possible that an IPv6 socket
could handle IPv4 traffic and netstat would never show it.

Here is the README from the netbase package:

# When disabled, IPv6 sockets will also be able to send and receive IPv4
# traffic with addresses in the form :::192.0.2.1 and daemons listening
# on IPv6 sockets will also accept IPv4 connections.
#
# When IPV6_V6ONLY is enabled, daemons interested in both IPv4 and IPv6
# connections must open two listening sockets.
# This is the default behaviour of almost all modern operating systems.

IPV6_V6ONLY is controlled by the sysctl net.ipv6.bindv6only.

[Bug 988202] Re: Ubuntu cannot automatically change brightness of screen and keyboard backlight in Macbook Air 4, 2

2012-05-08 Thread Warren Kretzschmar
I have the problem that when I change the screen brightness via the fn
keys or the system configuration panel, I get an increase in brightness
for maybe half a second and then it goes back to some default. Same for
key backlighting

My /sys/class/backlight folder has two dirs:
acpi_video0 and intel_backlight
when I run
echo 4880 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
the screen actually gets brighter for more than half a second, but it dims down
again after about 3 seconds.

The degree of dimness seems to fluctuate with ambient light. Maybe the
program in charge of changing the brightness dynamically according to
ambient light is not getting the point that I want a specific
brightness?

[Bug 967091] Re: Wrong tint with Nvidia after upgrading to 11.2

2012-05-05 Thread Stephen Warren
The whole point of the libvdpau patch is that it is easily reversible,
and integrates trivially with the Ubuntu packaging process.

To reverse it, just change the configuration file.

To integrate with the packaging process, put the config file in the
Flash package. That way, if a new Flash version is released that fixes
the problem, the config file can be atomically edited to disable the
workaround in libvdpau, and everything will just continue to work
without users noticing.

All the other workarounds have various disadvantages:

a) Some/all simply disable VDPAU usage at all, which results in
increased CPU usage, and in some cases disable VDPAU usage in all
applications, not just Flash.

b) They edit files that are owned by packages other than Flash, and so
it's impossible to actually package the fixes and atomically remove
those fixes at the same time as a Flash update.

c) They probably aren't going to be packaged at all, thus requiring
users to take complex steps to solve the problem, instead of Ubuntu
performing trivial packaging steps to solve it for everyone without
side-effects.

Note that Adobe has known about this bug for a long time. If they
haven't fixed it yet, I seriously doubt they ever will.

The following libvdpau patch detects Flash and implements some
workarounds:

http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/vdpau/2012-May/22.html

I'm not entirely sure if it's appropriate to add this to libvdpau, but
it certainly does solve the issues on my machine...

[Bug 812394] Re: Disable hibernate option by default

2012-05-04 Thread Stephen Warren
If hibernate must be disabled by default (which IMHO is a silly idea,
since it makes the whole fact that hibernate even exists completely
undiscoverable), then rather than directing users to create a file in
/etc (hardly something that the average end-user is going to know how to
do), why not create a package that can be installed that enables the
option. This would show up in whatever GUI package management tool users
get to use these days, with a description like install this to enable
hibernate on your system. That'd be far easier for end-users to do;
much more in-line with other tasks they probably already perform.

[Bug 990593] [NEW] Ubuntu 11.10 - 12.04 upgrade wipes all mysql databases and user info

2012-04-28 Thread Warren
Public bug reported:

Package: mysql-server (and possibly other mysql-related packages)

Upgraded from 12.04 LiveCD, 64-bit version. On completion of apparently
successful upgrade, all user mysql databases are GONE from
/var/lib/mysql/. All user account information seems to be gone,
according to Workbench. Unable to log into PHPMyAdmin by any means. It
looks like the upgrade completly deletes all previous mysql data and
does a fresh install.

I have a monitor connected to my macbook air 4,2 through a dvi to mini-
dvi adapter plugged into the thunderbolt port. If I have the adapter
connected to the mac when I start up, everything works fine. However,
when I remove or connect the dvi to mini-dvi adapter while the mac is
booted into Ubuntu, then the screen goes black.

[Bug 983850] Re: Macbook air 4, 2 screen goes black when mini-dvi adapter is removed

2012-04-17 Thread Warren Kretzschmar
I installed the mainline kernel v3.4-rc3-precise and I see some
improvement. Now instead of going black when I remove or attach the
adapter, the macbook screen stays active. However, when I remove the
adapter, I can still move my mouse into the area that would be reserved
for the second screen. And when I attach the adapter, the new screen is
recognized in the Displays panel, but I can't get anything to appear on
my second screen.

[Bug 968489] Re: flash video appears blue ubuntu 12.04

2012-03-30 Thread Stephen Warren
Jan, this definitely isn't a libvdpau problem; libvdpau is just a
wrapper library that is used to locate the vendor-specific VDPAU driver.
The problem is either in the Ubuntu desktop environment (window
manager/compositor), the application which uses VDPAU (e.g. Adobe Flash)
or the VDPAU driver itself (e.g. NVIDIA driver).

2012-03-30 Thread Stephen Warren
Ah right, I thought that by blue you meant a solid single color,
rather than just swapped chroma components. In that case, yes, as you
say, I believe Pierre-Loup has confirmed this is a bug in Adobe Flash,
hence the workaround he created.

I also have this problem - and I agree it is very annoying.

FWIW - I also installed a utility to disable my touchpad when the mouse
is plugged in. Could this be triggering the issue?

The orginal bug is https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/889519

If there's some way to attach all the collected data to that one
instead, and close this one, then that's probably a good idea.

[Bug 430411] Re: socket file location doesn't support chroot'd postfix smtpd, which is default

2011-11-22 Thread Stephen Warren
It doesn't just work. Just work means it works without having to
change anything to make it work.

The reason I filed this bug is not because it can't be made to work, but
that the default configuration of the two packages (postfix, spamass-
milter IIRC) when simply apt-get install'd is such that they will not
work together without fixing this issue. It seems like the default setup
of these two packages should be such that they work together correctly.

Now, if I was doing something non-standard, I'd be fine with having to
read the documentation to make it work. However, that's not the case
here.

So, in my opinion, this bug should be re-opened (unless the bug has been
fixed already in a more recent release than I reported it against, but
there's no evidence of that here).

[Bug 801356] Re: Lines appear at the top of the desktop, and at the bottom of some windows

2011-11-09 Thread Will Warren
Hi Bryce, thanks for your comments.

I have upgraded and am using Oneiric now.

The issues with the unity overlay's transparency have been resolved,
however there are still lines at the top of the screen when the desktop
is focused. When an app is running full screen, there are no issues.

I'm not sure how to proceed with this. Should I file a new bug under
Oneiric or just change this one?

Just as an FYI, I recently tested out GNOME3 on the same hardware and
that looks great, except all the UI fonts are scrambled. This leads me
to believe that it's not a Unity bug, but an ati one.

[Bug 850923] Re: Two-finger scrolling is off by default

2011-09-15 Thread Adam Warren
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. This is not
necessarily a bug because the default scrolling for linux is edge
scrolling, which I agree, is less common. You have to change the setting
at least once. Please continue to report bugs you may have.

2011-09-13 Thread Adam Warren
Hello all,
My name is Adam Warren and I just joined the testing team. I currently am
studying Chemistry/Biomedical Engineering at Butler University. I love
ubuntu, and use it on a daily basis, so I am really looking forward to being
apart of the testing team. I am no pro, though. I'm just starting to get my
feet wet but I'm a quick learner and can't wait to learn all about this
stuff.

2011-09-13 Thread Adam Warren
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately the -calendar command does not run with
Thunderbird, it is designed for Sunbird. You can enter thunderbird -h in
the terminal to see all available commands.

[Bug 803127] Re: w3c-markup-validator depends on w3c-sgml-lib (nonexistent in Natty)

2011-06-29 Thread Warren Hill
I can confirm that with this workaround:

Installing w3c-sgml-lib from Oneiric before installing w3c-markup-
validator.

All installs cleanly and once the apache config files are extended to
use the validator all appears to work:

It passes the good html I have asked it to validate and fails the badly
formed html I have asked it to validate.

Natty.

2011-06-25 Thread Will Warren
I reported this bug using the ubuntu-bug tool, and it added the
regression tag automatically, even though I was NOT using unity with
Maverick.

I did mention that there is a thread on the Ubuntu forums about this
that included screenshots, but I might as well attach them to this too.

[Bug 801356] [NEW] Lines appear at the top of the desktop, and at the bottom of some windows

2011-06-23 Thread Will Warren
Public bug reported:

These strange lines appear at the top of the desktop, and at the bottom
of the unity overlay (the thing that comes up when you click the
ubuntu logo in the top left.

Running natty (upgraded from maverick) although I know another person
has experienced it after doing a fresh install.

The common thing between the both of us is that we both have the ATI
Radeon Xpress 1250 graphics chipset. See here for more information +

[Bug 771905] Re: No logo at boot on nvidia card

2011-06-11 Thread Stephen Warren
Psychotron's workaround of adding GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text to
/etc/defaults/grub works for me.

Alternatively, another option that works for me: Find the following pre-
existing text in /etc/defaults/grub:

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console

and remove the initial # character from the second line:

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
GRUB_TERMINAL=console

(and run sudo update-grub after either change)

If you break into the grub menu, edit the grub option you want to boot,
and remote quiet splash from the linux command-line, you'll boot into
text mode, and hence see the crypt password prompt.

[Bug 719356] Re: visudo doesn’t handle includedir apparently

2011-06-07 Thread Stephen Warren
I believe the syntax in the /etc/sudoers file is #includedir
/etc/sudoers.d not includedir /etc/sudoers.d, i.e. you do need the
leading # character; the visudo syntax error message when you omit it is
correct. See `man sudoers`.

[Bug 771905] Re: No logo at boot on nvidia card

2011-06-07 Thread Stephen Warren
Hmm. I partially take that back. The actual content of the kernel
command-line isn't important. What is important is editing in grub (i.e.
at the grub menu, press e to edit, don't make any changes, then press
ctrl-x to boot). That works most of the time, but just occasionally
doesn't.

[Bug 771905] Re: No logo at boot on nvidia card

2011-06-07 Thread Stephen Warren
If you edit /boot/grub.cfg and override the timeout lines to be
timeout=0, grub never displays a boot menu, but instead jumps straight
to booting the default option. In this case, the password prompt is
visible for me.

IIRC, by default, Ubuntu configures grub to *not* display the menu
(hence this works for everyone) *unless* you have another OS installed
(e.g. Windows), in which case, grub is configured to display the menu so
you can choose (and displaying the menu, without displaying the editing
screen seems to be the related to this problem)

Does everyone affected see the grub menu during boot, but others (who
unfortunately probably won't be reading this bug...) not?

[Bug 777302] Re: No password prompt on boot for crypted root disk

2011-06-06 Thread Stephen Warren
Me too.

Is this related to using a video/X driver that doesn't support KMS? I
notice that Jerico's lspci.txt in comment #5 shows an ATI graphics card,
and the fglrx binary driver is listed in ProcModules.txt in comment #8.

(As background, in Maverick, I uninstalled the Ubuntu NVIDIA driver
packages, and had installed a newer NVIDIA driver directly from one of
NVIDIA's .run driver distributions. I did the upgrade in this state.
After the upgrade, installing Ubuntu's NVIDIA driver package didn't
solve the issue)
