Subject : Information and request for support to RMLL/WLSM in Brussels
July 6-11 2013

Dear,

From July 6 till 11, 2013, we plan to hold in Brussels the World Libre
Software and Culture Meeting (WLSM) also known in French as the «
Rencontres mondiales du logiciel et de la culture libre». This would
be only the second time outside of France after the July 2012 edition
of Geneva.

This will be the 14th edition of an event that is important enough to
count about 1000 entries per day for 6 days, during which many peole
from many diverses countries gather to speak about free software, free
hardware and free culture. As such, it is also a meeting between
developers, policy makers and general public.

To get an idea of what it was in 2012, go http://rmll.info

In Brussels, the event is planned to take place mostly at the Free
University of Brussels (ULB), where the FOSDEM (http://fosdem.org)
gathers about 5000 free software developers during one weekend in
early February, and in the center of Brussels for some activities that
we want especially opened to the public to have him discover the power
and pleasure of free software, free hardware and free culture in
general. Organizers of Fosdem know about Brussels as candidate for
2013 and have expressed some support. Indeed, RMLL/WLSM is
complementary to Fosdem as Fosdem focuses on developpers only.

The activities in the center of Brussels would typically take place on
July Saturday 6 and Sunday 7. THe other ones, from 9 am till 10pm
would take place on the ULB campus du Solbosch

So far, as an event organized in France with many participants from
France, Belgium, Switzerland, Africa, North America and other French
speaking countries, the event has been mainly in French. We plan to
have it even more international and with many more languages spoken,
starting with English. (Although English was spoken during some
sessions, especially the technical ones)

The President of the ULB has marked a strong interest and support, the
ULB facilities are available and are being reserved, student housing
may be available.

Some ULB teachers, including myself, have expressed their interest and
support, at least moral, is already acquired, including professors
Olivier Debeir and Jean-Marc Sparenberg Applied Science and Andrée
Puttemans, Dean of the Faculty of Law.

We are contacting other college and universitty professors, as well as
representatives from private companies involved with free software.

It is also likely that we have the support of the RTBF and the EBU,
the European radio and television union that develops free software
for its members and was strong in Geneva and whose chairman is the
director of the RTBF.

Several members of hackespace of ULB (urlab) are very interested in
actively participating in the organization of these RMLL2013 @
Brussels, 14th name, including its coordinator Cedric Lood. We would
very much like to have the participation of representatives from other
hackerspaces of the world. We are in touch with Mitch Altman to hold
during the whole week a « fabulous hack space »

We write to you to ask for official support and mark of interest, if
possible *before* Novembre 10, 2012 because we need to enter a
complete file to support the project (see
wiki.wlsm.be/index.php/Dossier_2013)

Any support and involvement by you and members of your team and
organization would be welcome.

From the help towards the organization, support or participation inf
the hack space, to participations to conferences, debates, allocation
of some resources, help with contacts to national free software
supporting associations, universities, hackerspace or any other help
would be very much welcome.

Do you think you and groups that you know can participate and get involved ?

Could your institution and you put a some resource to help find
further support, contact people from private companies to colleges,
university and research labs or other parliament, and to circulate
info ... ?

Please do not hesitate to spread the word.

Thank you for your support and for the information you want to share with us.

Much thanks in advance

Sincerely,

Nicolas Pettiaux
Coordinator RMLL2013@Brussels
Avenue du Pérou 29
