I do have installed BRIGHTNESS CONTROLLER. That app is great. 2 thumbs up!
It prevents the light from my screen monitor to blow out the corneas in my eyes.
It is really a good app. I can't sing enough praises for it.

That might be was is holding up my upgrade. Please let me know.

It's unfortunate that the dkms driver for a network card was not included on
the image. The intention of having dkms support in the install media is
that *all* network drivers in the archive be included (which in this case
would mean moving rtl8821ce to main).

I can't find anything confirming the ASUS L210 needs this driver. The
driver declares support for exactly 3 PCI IDs:

  10EC:C821
  10EC:C82A
  10EC:C82B

But in any event, this dkms package has been dropped in kinetic and later as
obsoleted by upstream kernel support (https://launchpad.net/bugs/1993324);
so since the next 22.04 point release will use the HWE kernel from kinetic
and pick up the in-tree driver support, there seems no point in making any
changes here at this point.

In the future if you're aware of dkms packages for network drivers that
should be included on the media, please feel free to file bug reports
against either ubiquity or ubuntu-meta so we can make sure to include them.

Looking more closely the driver is in universe and as such is not
included on the installation media for Ubuntu so no additional testing
is required. Sorry about that!

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour for 11.04.22

2022-11-05 Thread Cody Smith
Like I said yesterday, it's a 3rd party kernel module that has to be
installed, It is in the Ubuntu universe repo, but it's a dkms module, so
you'll likely have to manually grab the packages for that as well as the
module.

Here's the module:
https://ubuntu.osuosl.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/r/rtl8821ce/rtl8821ce-dkms_5.5.2.1-0ubuntu10_all.deb

I'm sure it's in whatever ubuntu mirror you prefer as well, I just pulled
the link from OSU OSL, since that's pretty close to Salem comparatively,
since it's at Oregon State University.

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour for 11.04.22

2022-11-05 Thread James Bradley
I'm afraid it's not immediately clear to me how to proceed with Ubiquity. I
can tell you the following: I used a USB drive with Kubuntu 22.04.1 to make
the install. The install went smoothly, and I did choose the option to
install third-party software, but as the installer never made a wifi
connection, I'm sure the point was moot. The Asus L210 has no Ethernet.

After the installation, everything is working fine except the networking.
Network manager shows no available connections, and System Settings only
reports two loopback addresses under Network Interfaces. That's about all I
have at this point.

I haven't read the whole thread but depending on choices made during the
installation process the driver may not have been installed. If you were
to open a bug report about ubiquity, using 'ubuntu-bug ubiquity', I'd be
interested in reading so that we might get a fix in 22.04.2.

Re: [Ubuntu Oregon] Ubuntu Hour for 11.04.22

2022-11-04 Thread Cody Smith
That's fine.

As to your new laptop, if it's just networking that's not operational, it's
likely because the network chip it uses doesn't have an in tree modules
from what I could find on Google, since it looks like it's a Realtek chip
(those are super hot or miss when it comes to having in tree modules,
usually requiring a dkms module to function)

This thread details it nicely:

2022-11-04 Thread James Bradley
I was hoping to make it this evening, but things don't look promising at
this point. Hope you have a good session, and maybe next time for me.

Happened to have run across anything involving drivers for an Asus L210?
I've installed Kubuntu 22.04, but it doesn't seem to recognize the wifi
hardware, at all.

Hello, are you still having problems with this? I'm sorry I lost track
of it on Tuesday, but when I checked the archive mirrors then the
permissions on this file looked fine to me.

Thanks

[Bug 1968147] Re: Unable to boot Ubuntu and Ubuntu flavors on older laptops

2022-04-08 Thread Julian Andres Klode
As stated, run apport-collect from the working 20.04.4 image or collect
the info about which laptops they are and what hardware they have
yourself.

Run grub with set debug=all and capture the output in a video.

I suspect there isn't much we can do here, unfortunately, but without
anything to debug it's clearly not happening.

Thanks for the additional detail.

I've replied on the budgie discourse; but can I request you re-try a

(better if 30 mins)

[Bug 1968147] Re: Unable to boot Ubuntu and Ubuntu flavors on older laptops

2022-04-07 Thread fenixleon
Thanks for replying Chris. I had posted the question in the Ubuntu
Budgie forum as I had experienced the issue with it -
https://discourse.ubuntubudgie.org/t/unable-to-boot-ubuntu-budgie-on-
older-laptops/5810/6. The recommendation from Ubuntu Budgie team member
was to raise a bug report.

Re: invalid ISO, I am assuming you mean a corrupted ISO as a result of
an improper download. If yes, this was validated by matching the hashes.

Do you mean an improper write from the ISO? If yes, this was tested with
several tools such as dd, cat, Startup Disk Creator, UnetBootin or
balenaEtcher.

To clarify, are you asking me to `apport-collect`? Since I'm unable to
get past the GRUB screen for example when using Ubuntu Budgie 21.10, I'm
unsure how I can do this.

[Bug 1968147] Re: Unable to boot Ubuntu and Ubuntu flavors on older laptops

2022-04-07 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing
future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

FYI: I'm replying here on a 2009 dell that is running Lubuntu jammy; and use
machines from as old as 2006 in QA-testing Ubuntu and flavors of Ubuntu and
have no issues booting. Your issue doesn't rule out invalid ISO (did you verify
it as per documentation) or improper write to ISO (far more likely a problem in
my experience, did you rule this out? as you've provided few clues as to having
done this). I can see you've tried from your explanation though, so thank you.

You've provided no hardware specifics (those could be provided by a
`apport-collect` using another bootable ISO, but you'd have to clearly state
you used an different ISO to provide that detail, as it would report your ISO
version/date as from the ISO used when report was made), nor what ISO you're
actually using. Ubuntu jammy is currently in testing, so dailies are produced
(sometimes more than one per day) with the ISO marked as to which it is. You've
not provided this detail, or link the QA-test on the ISO tracker
(iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/429/builds) which would allow that
detail to be obtained via that recording of your test.

Please note many support sites do not support Ubuntu jammy (or flavors)
as it's not yet a released product. IRC, Ubuntu Forums do however as
examples.

[Bug 1968147] [NEW] Unable to boot Ubuntu and Ubuntu flavors on older laptops

2022-04-07 Thread fenixleon
Public bug reported:

I have several older laptops (~12 years old) that I’d like to install
Linux. The laptops don’t have support for EFI/UEFI. They only have
support for BIOS or Legacy mode. The laptops have a 64 bit CPU.

I attempted to install Ubuntu Budgie 21.10 and after successfully
completing POST, the laptops stall and display GRUB on the screen. It
doesn’t progress any further.

I’ve ruled out the following:

-USB flash drive or USB port failures by booting with different USB flash
drives and USB ports.
-ISO corruption as the hashes match.
-Problems with the laptops as they successfully boot Ubuntu 20.04.4.
-LiveUSB issues as it makes no difference if I use dd, cat, Startup Disk
Creator, UnetBootin or balenaEtcher.

I’ve noticed that Ubuntu Budgie ships with GRUB 2.04 but Ubuntu uses an
ISOLinux bootloader. As the laptops fail to get past GRUB, my only guess
at this point in time is that GRUB 2.04 and later versions are
incompatible with certain BIOS models.

In further testing of Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.4, the devices boot. Ubuntu
version 22.04 like Ubuntu Budgie 21.10 results in the laptops not
getting past GRUB. As the images could not boot, I'm unable to raise the
bug report via the live USB session.

[Bug 1954854] Re: bind 9.16.1-ubuntu on ubuntu 20.04 randomly exits with segfault signal

2022-03-08 Thread Michael Hafen
I was looking to upgrade to 9.18 from ISC's repo, since we're interested
in DOT/DOH here, but I'll hold off on that until after 22.04.01 just in
case you get some time to dig into this again.

[Bug 1954854] Re: bind 9.16.1-ubuntu on ubuntu 20.04 randomly exits with segfault signal

2022-03-08 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
Thanks for the feedback, Michael.

First of all, let me say that we appreciate the help you've been
providing here. Given that we are not able to reproduce the bug here,
we depend on your reports in order to make progress and take decisions
regarding it.

Unfortunately, I think it will be hard for us to keep working on this
issue as is. Bisecting it may indeed be a good next step, but since it
can take a long time (1 month) for the bug to manifest to you, we may be
looking at spending many months trying to pinpoint exactly what the
issue is and when it was introduced.

I will add this bug to my long term TODO list and try to investigate it
a bit more when I have the time (which may never happen), because I
vaguely remember thinking about other approaches to try and fix it using
the commit I mentioned in my previous comment (#21).

Meanwhile, as I said above, it seems that unfortunately we won't be able
to dedicate much more time investigating this bug. I will lower its
priority to reflect that, but will also change its status to Confirmed
(not Triaged because we weren't able to reproduce it).

If you happen to find more information about the bug, or (even better)
if you find ways to reproduce it, don't hesitate to let us know.

It's been a month now, and no crashes on any of my three servers with this
version of bind. Looks like this version is good (for me).
If you want to bisect, I'll keep helping with it.

2022-02-02 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello Michael, thanks for reporting back. Honestly I'm not sure on how
to proceed on debugging this. I'll go back my first comment and suggest
trying a newer version of bind9 to check if the issue is gone in the
newer upstream releases.

I'm preparing a PPA with Jammy's bind9 (1:9.16.15-1ubuntu3) built for Focal
(link coming soon).
Could you try installing and monitoring it? If *does* crash, I think we should
follow-up upstream and report the bug there.

OTOH if it does *not* crash, then we can consider bisecting and finding
out which new version fixed the issue, and then dig even deeper and try
finding out which commit or commits make the difference. That won't be
an easy task, especially given that the reproducibility of this crash is
low. I don't think we're going to do this unless an easier way to
trigger the crash is found.

[Bug 1954854] Re: bind 9.16.1-ubuntu on ubuntu 20.04 randomly exits with segfault signal

2022-01-12 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
Hi,

With Bryce's initial analysis in mind, I started digging to see what
upstream has done to fix this problem. I could not find upstream bug
reports similar to this one, but I did notice that they're being more
careful when accessing some variables in the code mentioned above
(things under lib/isc/netmgr/). For example, the following commit:

commit 634bdfb16d8f91ba411f43d0e871ff45cebe125e
Author: Ondřej Surý
AuthorDate: Thu Nov 12 10:32:18 2020 +0100
Commit: Ondřej Surý
CommitDate: Tue Dec 1 16:47:07 2020 +0100

Refactor netmgr and add more unit tests

did a huge refactor in the code, including tightening the guards when
accessing the "isc_nmsocket_t" structure:

 void
 isc__nm_tcp_send(isc_nmhandle_t *handle, isc_region_t *region, isc_nm_cb_t cb,
 void *cbarg) {
+   REQUIRE(VALID_NMHANDLE(handle));
+   REQUIRE(VALID_NMSOCK(handle->sock));

Unfortunately, the aforementioned commit is too large to be safely backported
to the Focal bind9 package (and even if it could be cleanly backported, I'd
still be very reticent about SRU'ing it).

I decided to take a simpler approach and see how things go. I grepped
for places that are accessing the "isc_nmsocket_t" structure and added
guards to verify that it's valid. You can see the patch here:
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/xBW3J33SXZ/. I then prepared a bind9 package
with this diff and uploaded it to a PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~sergiodj/+archive/ubuntu/bind9-1954854-segfault/+packages

@Michael, could you please give this a try and see if the bug still
manifests? This would be a good first step before we can decide whether
it makes sense to SRU this or not.

Thanks.

[Bug 1954854] Re: bind 9.16.1-ubuntu on ubuntu 20.04 randomly exits with segfault signal

2022-01-03 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Thanks for the info Michael,
without steps to reproduce I see two paths from here.

## #1 trying different versions

As Paride asked it might be worth to check different versions.
There is no super-convenient way to downgrade bind9

You can add all of Bionics (or any other release in between cosmic, disco,
eoan) to apt like:
root@f:~# cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bionic.list
root@f:~# vim /etc/apt/sources.list.d/bionic.list
# herein replace all "focal" with bionic
root@f:~# apt update
root@f:~# apt-cache policy bind9
bind9:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2.9
  Version table:
 1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2.9 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/main amd64 Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security/main amd64 Packages
 1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/main amd64 Packages
 1:9.11.3+dfsg-1ubuntu1.16 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates/main amd64 Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-security/main amd64
Packages
 1:9.11.3+dfsg-1ubuntu1 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages
# A downgrade to bionics 9.11.3 would then be:
root@f:~# v=1:9.11.3+dfsg-1ubuntu1.16; apt install bind9=$v bind9utils=$v

# Warning, this might mess up your dependencies and installed packages, I'd
recommend doing this on a test system or with a full backup to restore after
testing.

## #2 Full debugging

As you report that your offsets seem to be reliable aou could try to
attach a full crash of bind9 if it generates one.

So if there is /var/crash/...bind9...crash
then try running
  $ sudo apport-collect 1954854

That should attach all logs and version information.

Then (if not auto-attached) add the crash file as well.
We could then try to get a full gdb backtrace, maybe that indicates an obvious
issue or an error known by upstream.

[Bug 1954854] Re: bind 9.16.1-ubuntu on ubuntu 20.04 randomly exits with segfault signal

2021-12-16 Thread Michael Hafen
This started happening when I upgraded the server from Ubuntu 18.04 to
20.04. Is there a convenient way to downgrade to 9.10.3?

As far as triggering the crash, I'm not sure. As I said it seems to happen
randomly. I suspect it's related to the amount of load on the service.
Here's a grep from my syslog which shows when the crashes happen:

[Bug 1954854] Re: bind 9.16.1-ubuntu on ubuntu 20.04 randomly exits with segfault signal

2021-12-16 Thread Paride Legovini
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. While segmentation
fault definitely shouldn't happen, there isn't really enough information
here for a developer to confirm this is a bug in Ubuntu and not some
other kind of system corruption, especially given that there are no
other reports of similar crashes, at least that I'm aware of.

Useful information would be:

* Did this start happening after upgrading to 1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2.9? Does
downgrading to 1:9.16.1-0ubuntu2.8 (or to the version you were using
before) stop the crashes? This is very important for us to know.

* Did you identify some minimal steps that are able to trigger the
crash?

* Does the crash always happen at the same address?

I'm marking this bug report as Incomplete for the moment.

Hi phuctruonghoang,

Can you better describe what was the issue that happened with ubuntu-
advantage-tools ?

Also, can you please run:

Your solution installed ubuntu-advantage, the original issue was executing
*clipgrab* for ubuntu 18.04. On Ubuntu 20.04 then worked pretty well for
clipgrab. On 18.04 seem to generate a Root Certs error with an equifax.
I'll work on that. And also send you the feedback I got frum Ubuntu 18.04.

If the "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" could help you. I'll forward

I'll try to address the Equifax root certificate issue on my own.

[Bug 1946034] Re: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-advantage-tools

2021-10-05 Thread Grant Orndorff
Hello Joseph and Paride,

This looks like it might be a variation on bug 1930121

Do you have a non-standard python installation? (not installed via apt)

If so, then the quick fix is hopefully to just set
PYTHONPATH=/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages. To test, try running
PYTHONPATH=/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages python3
and then try to `import uaclient` in the python shell.

'python-opcua' and 'python3-opcua' are unrelated. There is an
unfortunate module naming collision between those packages and ubuntu-
advantage-tools :(

[Bug 1946034] Re: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-advantage-tools

2021-10-05 Thread Paride Legovini
Hello and thanks for this bug report. I tried to reproduce the problem
from a clean Bionic system, but ubuntu-advantage-tools installed just
fine. The container image I used came with ubuntu-advantage-tools
preinstalled, but I purged it, together with ubuntu-minimal, and
reinstalled it. Log excerpt:

[Bug 1946034] [NEW] https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-advantage-tools

2021-10-04 Thread Joseph O'Connor
Public bug reported:

We recently encountered an issue with our deployment pipeline when
installing Ubuntu 18.04.

"ubuntu-minimal" now depends on ubuntu-advantage-tools, but that package fails
install with:
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'uaclient'

I added OS packages 'python-opcua' and 'python3-opcua' and the error changed to:
No module named 'uaclient.entitlements'

I'm wondering why the dependencies can't be resolved at install time
through APT per usual. The setup consistently exits with a '1', which
fails our build pipeline. Hopefully that's not the default behavior.

[Bug 1795207] Re: upgrade to ubuntu-18.04: 'ubuntu-minimal' not found

2021-08-24 Thread Pol Vangheluwe
My architecture is "powerpc" (Apple G3 - G4 and G5 machines are big-endian
machines). Xenial supports both "powerpc" and "ppc64el" but Bionic only
supports "ppc64el" (little-endian). So, I am afraid that there is no solution
for my problem: Xenial is the last Ubuntu release with support for "powerpc".
Of course, the release-upgrade app should be clearer about this:
- it should not propose an upgrade to a not-supported release;
- it should return a clearer error description when the upgrade fails.

2021-07-23 Thread Brett Johnson
I resolved this problem by modifying my /etc/apt/sources.list to remove
the mirror method, and point directly to ubuntu sources. I.e. my old
sources.list contained lines like this:

  deb mirror://mirrors.ubuntu.com/mirrors.txt xenial main restricted

Which I modified to this:

  deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial main restricted

Não observei quaisquer eventos serios.

TODO software tem bugs. Mas não, Ubuntu não foi abandonado.

Alias: Ubuntu (e vários outros projectos) estão a finalizar a saída do
Freenode (IRC); estamos agora no irc.libera.chat. Os canais IRC

[Bug 1913369] Re: ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core

2021-01-28 Thread Alex Murray
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

2020-11-25 Thread Seth Arnold
Hello Moner, this may need to be reported to the virtualbox community, I
don't have any suggestions off-hand.

Thanks

Reviewing the files from your upgrade attempt you seem to have enabled a
PPA that provides sane packages. This will prevent the upgrade as that
PPA contains package version numbers greater than the release to which
you are upgrading. You can revert the PPA by installing the ppa-purge
package from the official Ubuntu archive and then running 'sudo ppa-
purge ppa:sane-project/sane-git' or 'sudo ppa-purge ppa:sane-project
/sane-release' . After that you can try upgrading again and if it still
fails open a new bug report. Thanks and good luck!
