This is something that must be supported by the hardware. 2) For your VM needs you can try Oracle/Sun VirtualBox (there is an Open Source Edition (OSE), but the closed source edition is a bit better and also free) or VMWare Server (free). Both are really fine. 3) On real-life hardware you might try to get Compiz working. Teens really like eye-candy (rotating cubes, nice animations, ...). Compiz might seem not very useful at first but it introduces many niceties (positioning windows, blacking out windows in the background, ...). What might also prove handy for them is to show the different workspaces (in compiz or even without compiz) to organize your programs). I agree with Egon: they will probably like eye-candy and then it's important to install it directly on the machine to have full power and full control. What I personally think is important: * Learn to make a dual boot o I use gparted from the livecd to manually partition a harddisk. I guess 6 to 8 GB might be enough to demonstrate Ubuntu. o During install I pick manual partitioning (or how is it called?) o Accessing documents from windows * Enable compiz * Install some programs * Setup the social possibilities with Ubuntu (I'm not using it, but I guess that chances are big that they use Facebook a lot). To have the original laptop again: boot from liveCD, use gparted to remove the partition and resize the Windows-partition again. The biggest problem might be to have the original Windows bootloader again. I remember I used to have trouble with that, although, in the end, I managed to - euhm - repair it ;-). My text might be a bit short and not clear about what I mean. I guess that two lessons will be (way?) too short to do and explain everything. What might be a better plan: * Two lessons: o booting from the livecd and use it/explain it o resizing windows partition to make space for Ubuntu o while booting and resizing: explain some of the differences between Windows and Linux. * Two lessons: o install Ubuntu o configure Ubuntu (network,Ubuntu-me-menu,...) * Two lessons o continue with configuring Ubuntu (install software, software updates,...) o enabling compiz Or you could try to first use it inside VirtualBox to wait and see whether they are interested in Linux yes or no. Then you can/might suggest to install it for real on the laptop? BTW: if possible, I would wait until Ubuntu 10.10 is out, before installing it for real. Isn't a live cd a bit too slow and too limited? I suppose we could try, but I think we should be careful not to put people off. Kids tend to be impatient, and they might expect a better performance. Is a USB stick better/faster than a CD? I haven't got any experience with that. Hi, I *might* find some time to give some presentation, on a wednesday morning, Aalter is close to me (Waarschoot) I skimmed quickly through the thread, which I seem to have missed in August. Some ideas: - You can use virtualbox for running virtual machines instead of vmware - You could use USB sticks instead of livecd's, USB sticks can keep state and are quicker to boot from. What I don't have is plenty of time to prepare this, to setup stuff etc. But I might be able to help to pick the best tool, solution, and help you getting on with the project. From the email thread, I'm not sure what exactkly it is you want to do. If you have a precise idea of what exactly you need, tell me, and I'll tell you what I can or cannot do. Jan. je kunt onder virtual box 2D VIDEO en 3D video acceleratie activeren; moet je maar eens kijken of die inventor werkt.. vnl issues eventueel als dit werkt met dongles voor software protection. ik gebruik het ook vnl voor bepaalde software die niet onder wine wil draaien of waar geen linux versie van bestaat... Opgepast met Compiz... heb al ervaren op mijn laptop dat dit niet meer goed werkte van zodra ik een beamer op mijn vga connector aankoppelde...en laat ik natuurlijk zo'n presentaties voor een groot publiek willen tonen... Oplossingen hiervoor eindigden vaak met het feit dat ik nvidia gebruikte... (en die kans is toch vrij groot dat je een van deze grafische chipsets hebt :-) Sindsdien ga ik compiz-loos door het leven...
