[Bug 19484] Re: Gftp hangs on transfer

2006-07-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This is a real annoying bug, as I have also experianced it in Dapper
Drake 6.06LTS kernel 2.6.15-25. It did the same thing on 2 diffrent
computers. One is an Acer ferrari, and another and dual boot windows
desktop.

It makes me use windows :(

When the last patch came out, and both systems were updated, we lost
large file size FTP functionality.

I attempted to up load multiple 5M binary files, as well as a small HTML page,
as well as a test GIF.

On all files larger then 20,480b when the transfer got to 20480b in
GFTP, it says transfer stalled, unknown time remaining. FIles smaller
then 20K were uneffected.

I also attempted the 5M binaries from a bash script. The script just
froze when the ftp transfer was initiated. However, it was functional
before the up_date

[Bug 48884] Re: [Bug 48884] Re: Intel 945GM / 950GMA Video Very Slow In Xorg 7.0

2006-07-07 Thread fordracerguy
My issue has been fixed. This was a default install. To get the video card
working correctly, a utility called 915resolution is needed, as well as this
command needs to be ran at startup:
/bin/echo "base=0xc000 size=0x1000 type=write-combining" >|
/proc/mtrr

See http://www.corecoding.com/e1705.php for details.

[Bug 52287] Hotplug audio not detected in GUI

Public bug reported:

1. Install PCMCIA sound card and observe it working.
2. Put on-board sound chip driver in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.
3. Observe that nothing works.

My internal and external chipsets are entirely different (crappy SiS
chipset vs SB Audigy 2 ZS Notebook), meaning there are no overlapping
kernel modules.

This is the actual problem: the modules for the PCMCIA sound card are
actually loading fine. The GUI, however, seems too stupid to detect
hotplugged audio devices independently.

[Bug 52284] Battery reporting only works after switching to an external monitor during Grub

2006-07-07 Thread Frank Murphy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-25-686

Really.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M25XS149 and it seems to me that the battery
detection worked great in Breezy, but I don't totally remember. But for
a few months it hasn't worked. I discovered that it would work if I
tried to switch the monitor output to an external screen (with fn+F5)
during the grub screen. With a TV attached to the S-Video or with no
screen attached, the /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/* have contents. (And seem
to work great.)

If I don't do this, it seems that the battery is detected, and if I
check right away, even found. But after the first file access, it
doesn't work any more.

I tried adding ec_burst=1 to the menu.lst, to no avail.

I'll attache the relevant dmesg output soon.

[Bug 52159] Re: Install of ubuntu-desktop from a LAMP server gives a couple of issues.

2006-07-07 Thread Christian Ashby
The passwd and group databases come from LDAP.
The user I was logged in as is a local user (the one created by setup) and root
is (of course) in the local passwd db.

Paul: I am experiencing the same issue. The symptoms, problems, and
solutions are all exactly the same. I just wasn't sure how to do it and
now that I am doing it correctly, adding that line to the file fixes the
issue.

I have the same exact hardware as him (Dell Inspiron 8100), here's my

[Bug 51157] Re: 6.06 64bit kernel totally broken after install, gcc3.3 fixes

2006-07-07 Thread KnottyMan
Using a kernel from the other supermicro server (Hoary 2.6.10) to boot
from, I was then able to apt and compile from the vanilla source tree
(patched with mm3 to get Areca support) a 2.6.17 kernel that works fine.
I had to use gcc 3.3. Same source with 3.4 would not work. Ubuntu
2.6.15-7 source did not get me a bootable kernel, but I don't recall if
I compiled with 4.0, 3.4 or 3.3. I have installled this box numerous
times and numerous variants unfortunately.

Recompiling the booted 2.6.10 kernel from source did not recompile
nicely. This makes me think that it's a gcc >= 3.4 problem. I yanked
the whole source tree from the working Hoary box and tried to recompile
it with no changes to the config since I know that it will compile on
Hoary/3.3.

I'll try ubuntu source package compile with 3.3 on Monday 7/10. It's
currently doing a drbd sync of 2Tb... : )

So you recompiled our kernel (the Ubuntu 2.6.15 git tree) with gcc-3.3

[Bug 29865] In ntfsprogs symlink /sbin/mount.ntfs-fuse points to incorrect location - please package new upstream version of ntfsprogs

2006-07-07 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
There is a new upstream ntfsprogs version (1.13.0) available since
2006-02-27.

Release Notes (for full changelog look at
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=397070&group_id=13956 )
"The long awaited release. Lots of enhancements and fixes across the board.
See the changelog for details but a few notable changes are that mkntfs now
creates NTFS 3.1 (Windows XP) volumes by default and that ntfsmount can deal
with symbolic links and device files."

It seems you forgot to package ntfsprogs 1.13.0, so now you can move
directly to 1.13.1 - it was released on 2006 June 16, look at

http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=426474&group_id=13956

Notes:
Time for another release. Many bug fixes and enhancements so update is
strongly recommended.

Some important changes:
- Fix bug with renaming directories with names in DOS and WIN32 namespaces.

[Bug 52268] High Latency when using alsa sequencer and alsa output

2006-07-07 Thread Nick Nassar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libasound2

It appears that there's a bug in libasound2 1.0.10 that causes very
noticable latency when using the alsa sequencer and alsa pcm output at
the same time. It's very common to use both when using timidity to
synthesize output from a midi device.
/usr/share/doc/timidity/README.alsaseq.gz in the timidity package has an
explanation of how you might do this.

Compiling libasound2 1.0.11-7 from Debian unstable using dpkg-
buildpackage and installing that fixes the problem.

I've confirmed that the problem happens on both a Mac Mini running
Ubuntu 6.06ppc and a Dell Latitude D510 running Ubuntu 6.06i386, and
using the newer version of libasound2 fixes the problem on both systems.

I wasn't able to find the corresponding bug report in the alsa bug tracker, but
I did find the ticket in the timidity tracker.

[Bug 52266] usb drive raw device (/dev/sd*) allows non-sudo'd write access

2006-07-07 Thread cwillu
Public bug reported:

New users do not neccessarily understand the mounting system yet, and as
such, may cause data corruption by accident. Hard drive devices
(/dev/hda, etc) have the permissions set in such a way that a command
such as "cp ~/MyFile /dev/hda2" will fail unless sudo'd which gives the
user a clue that they're not doing this in the right way. USB drives
however have no such affordance.

I was helping a user today in irc who did this by accident: he plugged
in the usb device, and cp'd files directly to the device (/dev/sda1)
itself rather than the mount in /media. The default permissions
permitted this, and so he corrupted the filesystem, requiring him to
wipe the drive.

The device group is set to plugdev with rw permissions. The default
created user is a member of this group by default. In contrast, the
group on hd devices is 'disk', which the user is not a member of, which
prevents this sort of thing from happening.

I'm not familiar with the usb drive infrastructure, it may actually be
neccessary that the user has this access to the device to make auto-
mounting work, but it might be worth investigating.

[Bug 51465] Re: ACPI suspend/hibernate doesn't work anymore

2006-07-07 Thread Eric Schwartz
Er, it's a regression *FROM* Breezy. It's a regression *FOR* Dapper.
Sorry about that.

[Bug 52148] Re: Can't CTRL+ALT+F1 to switch terminals

2006-07-07 Thread Gilbert
This is happening under 2.6.15-25-amd64-generic kernel, likely after I
install nvidia-glx as it was working before I had rendering. If I get a
change I'll try with vesa instead of nvidia in xorg.conf.

[Bug 26819] Re: Totem fails to play some files through smb

2006-07-07 Thread hackel
It doesn't matter. I explained that it's not a gnome-vfs problem.
Totem also crashes for me when I try to open
"smb://eleanor/HardDrive/Firefly/Firefly - 01x01 - Serenity Pilot.avi"
with the same error I described above. It's never even contacting the
smb server, it appears to be some kind of URL parsing error. If Alvaro
had his partition up, I'm sure gnomevfs-ls would work just fine for him,
as it does for me.
