The patch that you want me to remove would keep some people from even using dapper. The worst problem you are having is that you are going from hda to sda, right? no, SATA disks attached to a VT8251 are not beeing detected at all (scsi timeout from libata) because the VIA code in ahci.c stopped working with some backported libata stuff. Instead now sata_via.c works for VT8251, but only without the presence of the VIA modifications in ahci.c I think you mixed this with some other bug ;-) ? [Bug 52185] poor search results in gnome-app-install
Public bug reported: When searching for 'opera' in gnome-app-install, there's a couple of problems with the results: o The exact name match (i.e. the opera package itself) is so far down the list (8th place) it's not visible by default. Exact name match should be at the top of the list. o gnome-app-install seems to be doing searching without any sort of word delineation which is why there are so many search results for 'opera': anything with e.g. 'operation' in the Description is listed. I suppose this might be useful for some search terms and an option to turn this behaviour off may unnecessarily clutter the UI, but it does make the search results quite confusing. [Bug 45309] Re: sun-java5 dlj license needs clarifications
Dennis: now that is a nice excuse! People disagree (without any kind of ground, much less a solid one) with me and as such I can't consider them fooled? Neat. I guess you should read the COC and understand it, not merely memorize its URL. People, get this: Sun's poising itself with this license to assume absolutely no responsabilities. Whenever, in an Enterprise environment, you have a problem you can break down to Java (and prove) if it's not the Java that's distributed on java.sun.com, you're so out of luck... At the company I work at, IBM and HP are fighting about some java related problems (one says it's Java, the other the OS). Sun can't even be annointed with a responsability. This JDL has serious responsability issues, serious indemnification issues, and dubious distribution conditions. Pretending they're not dubious but instead very clear, based on a FAQ and license that say the FAQ is worthless, only the license is valid, is either gullibility or trying to fool the rest of the world. -- sun-java5 dlj license needs clarifications https://launchpad.net/bugs/45309 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 52188] Is too slow to be usable
Public bug reported: Gnome-app-install spends approximately 35 seconds on my system calculating dependencies, and it does this AGAIN after each time I install a new package. This means that I never use it, it is simply unacceptably slow, since I can have the package installed in that time using Synaptic or apt. I couldn't find a bug about this already - I'm not sure why... perhaps for others it is not so slow, or people just don't use it. Closes: LP#44931 * Removed debian/patches/svn*.dpatch, these were backported from 1.2.1 in 1.2.0-0ubuntu3. * debian/cupsys.init.d: Add missing log_end_msg. [Bug 49774] Re: (WISH) Reduce the number of dependences in kubuntu-desktop
the current purpose of kubuntu-desktop is to be able to run one command (sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop) to be able to get all of a standard kubuntu install. What you're suggesting I think is already implemented in kdebase. You dont *have* to have kubuntu-desktop as part of the upgrade, as far as I remember, but having to test every single possible combination of KDE applications installed probably isnt feasible - so we cant guarentee a clean upgrade. However, the updater is being worked on to try to keep the metapackages, which should help with the issue. ** Changed in: kubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged = Wishlist -- (WISH) Reduce the number of dependences in kubuntu-desktop https://launchpad.net/bugs/49774 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 52188] Re: Is too slow to be usable
I don't think so. The dialogue says Checking installed and available applications and then This may take one or two minutes (?!?!), so it seems to be intended behaviour. It happens when I open the program and _after_ I install an application on all of my systems. I can't see any bottlenecks in the terminal - but even 15 seconds would be unacceptable I think, considering that other package managers have negligible delays. Anyway, the terminal says this: Got non-package menu entry gnome-commander.desktop Got non-package menu entry kiso.desktop Got non-package menu entry k3dsurf.desktop Got non-package menu entry xchm.desktop Got non-package menu entry grdesktop.desktop Got non-package menu entry tsclient.desktop Got non-package menu entry granule.desktop Got non-package menu entry kmyfirewall.desktop -- Is too slow to be usable https://launchpad.net/bugs/52188 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 51942] Re: Grub didn't install on MBR
In fact my problem is that Grub DIDN'T install on MBR. I suppose it was installed on my root linux partition. The first time I rebooted the computer I had a BIOS error message saying that no bootable hard disk was found. So I had to boot from Desktop CD, and choose 'Boot From first Hard Disk' in the CD menu to have the Grub menu and then I reinstalled Grub in MBR by doing /sbin/grub-install /dev/hda, as all the other parameters of Grub and menu.lst were OK. So I think it is a real bug as in my case Grub didn't install in MBR like it should have been. -- Grub didn't install on MBR https://launchpad.net/bugs/51942 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 49819] Re: NFS and SMB transfers across LAN work very slowly
Now I also installed SSH server on both boxes, and tried moving files with both scp and the Nautilus interface. SSH transfers on LAN work at the same slow speed as SMB and NFS, so only HTTP protocol seems to utilize full ethernet speed. Im at a loss to explain what might cause it. Ive also disabled IPv6, no effect. Next im thinking of trying some other distribution on the other box to see if the problem persists when the other box runs something else than Dapper. -- NFS and SMB transfers across LAN work very slowly https://launchpad.net/bugs/49819 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 52200] Can't start programs after resume from suspend/hibernate
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 6.06. Sometimes after resuming my laptop from suspend/hibernate, I can't start any new programs, like gaim, xchat-gnome or something. I can't even open the log out/shut down/suspend/hibernate window. On the other hand, I can open new Firefox windows if Firefox was already running. I have to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace out of xorg to get it to work again. I believe this has something to do with unplugging the AC while the laptop is suspended/hibernated, but I haven't figured out when exactly it happens... sometimes after I resume the laptop and type in my password to the screensaver, the laptop immediately goes to screensaver again after showing the desktop for a second; I guess that might be the reaction to the AC unplugging. So far I haven't found a workaround, and I don't know what component is responsible for this stuff (/etc/acpi or gnome-power-manager or something else?), so I'm putting it here. I'll try not to plug/unplug the AC while in suspend/hibernate for a time, to get more info on this. ** Affects: gnome-desktop (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Can't start programs after resume from suspend/hibernate https://launchpad.net/bugs/52200 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 51417] Re: text metadata of the current line got lost, while editing
I compiled tomboy from source (CVS HEAD and 0.3.5) and had no problems anymore. This problem appeared really late in the dapper release process (I am using dapper since march). Unfortunately I couldn't find time to report this earlier. Maybe it is just a small bug... -- text metadata of the current line got lost, while editing https://launchpad.net/bugs/51417 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
