[Bug 57187] Version 10.3 unable to detect graphics card

2006-08-21 Thread tmitchell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

I have a GeForce 4200 Ti and when I installed the 10.3 update and
restarted X, the Xorg log gave only the error "No devices detected" and
refused to start. Downgrading back to an earlier version (10) allowed
the X server to start up normally.

Didn't really do a lot of effective troubleshooting but if there are
specific questions about my config, please let me know and I'll do my
best to help.

[Bug 51575] Re: [Bug 51575] Re: Applet crash at startup

2006-08-21 Thread Alex Murray
Thanks Sam... I know its probably quite annoying for distributors, but I
plan on releasing another bugfix release later today...but I think
better to have the current release as stable as possible even if that
means making releases every week (although hopefully not :)

Thanks
Alex

Same issue here, Dell Latitude D620 with an Nvidia Quadro NVS 110M video
card and using the 'nvidia' driver. Downgrading the package to the
previous version allowed GDM to start up, but now the screen goes blank
after the gnome splash screen, after which X crashes to GDM after about
15 seconds. Even the 'safe'gnome session crashes. The only usable
session is the 'terminal' one.

I was running compiz at the time that things broke, but reverting to a
vanilla config is not fixing anything.

My guess would be that somewhere in the object hierarchy, something has
an AUTOLOAD defined. This is the expected behavior in that case.

[Bug 57120] Re: installing some applications on Ubuntu requires adding external repositories

2006-08-21 Thread Vassilis Pandis
Hi again. It is intentional that Automatix is not in the repos. Besides
the fact that no problem-free "automatix"-like tool has been written
(EasyUbuntu has similar problems), it could be considered risky legally
(I don't remember the exact legal term for it). I'm quite positive that
this has been discussed, and rejected. (Even if it's not definitely
illegal, it's sort of grey area that people would rather avoid). You
might want to search for relevant discussions in the ubuntu-sounder
mailing list archives .

Probably the "not easy" part about adding new software to Ubuntu comes
from the fact that a lot of attention has to be paid to details. It's
not trivial for everybody to create a .deb - but I don't think this is
something that can be changed. One has to verify that the software works
correctly, that there are no security flaws, that it is legal to
redistribute it, write documentation etc.

About your "package-hunters", I'm not too sure. I might be wrong, but I
doubt that there exist many .deb's that are not already in
Debian/Ubuntu. And even if they exist, they may not be in Debian/Ubuntu
for a particular reason. Finally, applications that have no equivalents
in the repos are probably scarce so I'm not sure this justifies the
manpower. You might want to bring this up on ubuntu-sounder however .

All in all, keep in mind that this is a community effort :-) While I'm
sure that nobody is against adding packages in the repositories, it is a
fact that the developers are limited. It's not just doing the initial
packaging - somebody has to take care of the product's bugs (have you
seen how Malone's bug count rises daily?), watch for updates etc. Of
course, you're more than welcome to help! https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU
is an excellent starting point.

[Bug 52319] Re: Sound Card on Haier H51 laptop is recognised, but not functional.

2006-08-21 Thread Michael T. Richter
I can't even figure out what the workaround was supposed to be there,
frankly. I chmod-ed /dev/dsp to 666 (it was 660 for some unfathomable
reason). But the rest? I just can't decode. What's an IEC-related
option? How do I tell what's IEC-related and what's not? If it's
identified by the string "IEC" in it somewhere, there's nothing in
alsamixer that shows anything to do with IEC.

(To me "IEC" means "International Electrotechnical Commission" and is
usually paired with "ISO", you see.)

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

when I insert a empty CD, it is properly detected. I right click on a iso image
and 'write to disk', nothing happens. but I notice nautilus-cd-burner process
taking 90% CPU
5 minutes later the bruning dialog appears. I click to choose the speed. but I
get hundreds or entries from 0.2x to 8.x and higher ( with multiple 0.2x
entries ). This may be the cause of the hang. it takes minutes to scroll up to
desired speed. Afterwards, the burning dialog hangs for another 10 minutes.

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

[Bug 57172] video is blank after splash is displayed

2006-08-21 Thread Yves Junqueira
Public bug reported:

usplash version: 0.4-13 (edgy)

When I boot using the "splash" boot parameter, some funny drawings with
color pattern tests appear, and then the screen gets blank and I the
video doesn't work anymore. I am not sure, but I think it gets dark when
gdm is about to be loaded.

The machine is clearly still functional, since I can even reboot using
ctrl+alt+del and the num lock led is responsive for every virtual
console.

It is always reproducible.

If I remove the "splash" parameter, everything works fine.

[Bug 57170] optical medias are invisible with kde 3.5.4 on edgy

2006-08-21 Thread Anthony Mercatante
Public bug reported:

When inserting a cd or dvd, they don't appear on the desktop, and the action
selection windows doesn't show up.
It only fails with optical medias, "media storage" based memories are working
correctly.
I have been confirmed kde 3.5.4 on dapper doesn't have this problem.
That can also be a hal or dbus issue, but since I'm unsure what causes this,
kdebase is probably the better place to report.

It has probably to be considered critical bug since it make a simple
media usage of the computer simply impossible.

Note : this isn't a permission issue since I can play the dvd with
kaffeine which uses /dev/dvd device without any problem.

[Bug 50057] Re: Installation crashes in last phase (amd76xrom)

2006-08-21 Thread John Vivirito
tsubasafr and citizenkeith please file seperate bugs and attach the
files /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman.
We are not able to tell what the problem is just by the backtrace we
need to have the above files to find out what went wrong.

[Bug 49843] Re: Installer crashed at updating per APT

2006-08-21 Thread John Vivirito
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 47046 ***

Thanks for your report. At present, you must reformat system partitions
(e.g. /, /boot, /usr, or /var) during installation; the fact that the
partitioner doesn't warn you about this is also bug 47046, and is fixed
in dapper-updates. If you are upgrading an existing installation, then
please see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperUpgrades rather than using this
installer.

[Bug 57165] Applications not represented in the gui

2006-08-21 Thread acon
Public bug reported:

There is no representations for applications in the Ubuntu GUI. There
are packages in the Add/Remove menu, there are launchers in the menus,
there are some sort of icons for some running applications next to the
clock and there is a list of processes in the System Monitor, but no
where can I find a simple representation for the applications
themselves. If a representation for applications existed you would have
something to interact with to manage them, for example to launch them,
quit them, uninstall them and to kill them if they missbehave. The
representation could also show status, for example if the application is
running or is starting up or if it has something important to tell the
me.
