better to have the current release as stable as possible even if that
means making releases every week (although hopefully not :)

[Bug 57187] Version 10.3 unable to detect graphics card

2006-08-22 Thread tmitchell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

I have a GeForce 4200 Ti and when I installed the 10.3 update and
restarted X, the Xorg log gave only the error No devices detected and
refused to start. Downgrading back to an earlier version (10) allowed
the X server to start up normally.

Didn't really do a lot of effective troubleshooting but if there are
specific questions about my config, please let me know and I'll do my

2006-08-22 Thread Nikolaus Rath
Steve Peters [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
 $p-{type} tries to call a method named type

 My guess would be that somewhere in the object hierarchy, something has
 an AUTOLOAD defined. This is the expected behavior in that case.

Could you elaborate on that a little bit more? I thought autoloading
only takes place if an undefined subroutine is called. But here there
should be no call in the first place. Also, why can I access
$p-{type} in the debugger without an error?

Thanks,

[Bug 57189] Unobvious where to report Ubuntu installation problems

2006-08-22 Thread era
Public bug reported:

Through trial and error I have found this to be the apparent right place
for bug reports about installation problems in Dapper. However, there
are various other places where people are reporting bugs against the
installer, including ubuntu-express, debian-installer, and ubuntu-
meta.

It's not clear to me how this should be fixed, but some things come to
mind.

- Put a pointer in the welcome to ubuntu on-line docs. Probably not a
good overall solution, but a useful step for those who look there.

- Maybe create a package called ubuntu-live-install or some such which
simply redirects to whichever installer is current. For the record,
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+search?text=ubuntu+install
displays installation guide and ubuntu express before ubiquity,
and unless you happen to know what ubiquity means in this particular
context, you are unlikely to land there.

- Deprecate ubuntu-express in various visible ways to prevent people
from reporting ubiquity bugs there. I have been unable to find out the
status and roadmap for ubuntu-express but it seems that that is also
part of the problem, rather than (solely) a problem with my abilities.

- Similarly, somehow make it clear what the division of responsibilities
between debian-installer and ubiquity is.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/devel/debian-installer looks like d-i
should not be used, whereas https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source
/debian-installer/+bugs looks like a lot of bugs are being accepted for
debian-installer even where they seem to be specific to the live CD
installer.

- Follow up on bugs reported against ubuntu-express and poke on the
reporters to figure out if these are genuine ubuntu-express bugs or
actually meant to be reported against ubiquity. (Oh, seems like this is
already started; I recall there were many more bugs there last time I
looked.)

- Add pointers to  https://launchpad.net/people/ubuntu-
installer/+assignedbugs too, if possible (if nothing else, assign a
meta-bug pointing to the right place). For the record, this is the
I'm feeling lucky hit in Google for ubuntu installer bugs. Perhaps
the search results could be doctored to prefer a more informative page.
Or perhaps Google could even be persuaded to sponsor a link to whatever
Ubuntu says is the right place.

- Update https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InstallerTeam and make sure to keep it
up to date. The bugzilla link should be replaced with a launchpad link
and the Hoary and Breezy goals should probably be removed; or, at the
very least, add Dapper and Edgy.

Because my own understanding of the Right Answer is muddy at best, I
have to apologize if some parts of this bug report are inaccurate or
even preposterous. The bottom line should still be that if people can't
figure out where to report bugs, you will not receive reports about all
the problems people are having.

[Bug 45296] Re: International characters messed up in mp3 id tags

2006-08-22 Thread wiz
 Some people suggest to reconvert all (!!!) mp3 tags to UTF-8 to
resolve that error -
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-76831.html. I think it's
a hard way to resolve bug.

That's not hard. That is just not a solution at all. Because of public
file sharing would treat such 'converted' files as brand new, and users
on other OSes would get their utf8 mess.

The real solution is adaptive encodings support.

[Bug 57194] [Egdy] gcc has a strange behaviour -2 0 ?

2006-08-22 Thread Christophe Dumez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcc

Hi,

I recompiled libtorrent library (http://libtorrent.sf.net) with
gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 20060817 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-11ubuntu1) and I experience
a problem I didn't have with previous versions of gcc.

allocate_resources.cpp:80: int libtorrent::saturated_add(int, int):  assert «
sum = a  sum = b » failed.

I added some debug messages to the function, as follows:

int saturated_add(int a, int b)
{
  assert(a = 0);
  assert(b = 0);
  assert(a = resource_request::inf);
  assert(b = resource_request::inf);
  assert(resource_request::inf + resource_request::inf  0);
  int sum = a + b;
  std::cout  a:   a  '\n';
  std::cout  b:   b  '\n';
  std::cout  (a+b) sum:   sum  '\n';
  std::cout  resource_request::inf:   resource_request::inf  '\n';
  if (sum  0){
std::cout  sum  0\n;
sum = resource_request::inf;
std::cout  new sum:   sum  '\n';
  }else{
std::cout  sum = 0\n;
  }
  std::cout  sum = a:   (sum=a)  '\n';
  std::cout  sum = b:   (sum=b)  '\n';
  assert(sum = a  sum = b);
  return sum;
}

Here is the output:

a: 2147483647
b: 2147483647
(a+b) sum: -2
resource_request::inf: 2147483647
sum = 0
sum = a: 0
sum = b: 0
qbittorrent: allocate_resources.cpp:87: int libtorrent::saturated_add(int,
int):  assert « sum = a  sum = b » failed.

How can -2=0 ??? strange, right? My machine is standard: intel centrino 32bits.
I'm compiling with this gcc:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/qbittorrent_svn/src$ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 20060817 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-11ubuntu1)

I tried again with an older gcc:
chris-laptop# gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.0.4 20060630 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.0.3-4)

and this gcc worked fine... see:
a: 2147483647
b: 2147483647
sum: -2
resource_request::inf: 2147483647
sum  0
new sum: 2147483647
sum = a: 1
sum = b: 1

I don't think the problem comes from libtorrent code. With the lastest
gcc the statement -20 is false is this is simply wrong.

[Bug 57189] Re: Unobvious where to report Ubuntu installation problems

2006-08-22 Thread Simon Law
Ubiquity often tells you to file bugs against it when things go wrong.

Sadly, it's difficult for someone to determine which part of the
installation process is failing. We try to sort bugs into the right place.

Of course, adding documentation is a good thing, but there really
isn't an official document that describes this adequately. You may
wish to edit http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper and add this information
there.

Thanks.

[Bug 57201] xserver doesn't start on AMD64 after upgrade to 1.0.2-10.3

2006-08-22 Thread Stephan Gromer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

I have tried to upgrade from version 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.1 to
1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3. After the upgrade I logged out and killed the xserver
(ctrl-alt-backspace) to use the new package. I was informed that starting the
xserver failed (no screens found). I use the nvidia module so I replaced that
one with the OS module nv in the xorg.conf. No difference.
When I downgraded to 10.1 it worked again.

I will repeat this and send the Xorg.log ASAP.

My system is AMD64 based

[Bug 57200] Synaptic sometimes shows Packages cache file corrupted.

2006-08-22 Thread Gianfranco Liporace
Public bug reported:

Upgraded to Edgy recently, sometimes Synpatic shows this error:
An error occurred: Packages cache file corrupted (roughly translated from
Italian)
and then balls out.
Re-launching Synaptic I get the same error, but this time I can update the
package list and work normally.

Launching Synaptic from terminal no errors are reported.

[Bug 57203] After updating this package Xorg failed to start

2006-08-22 Thread Kris
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 57153 ***

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

We updated all of our computer desktops this morning, all 6 of them on 6 very
different computers.
I am not sure of the exact name of the update, yet I believe it was:
xserver-xorg-core.
We have all of the package repositories.

After the update the xserver failed to detect any screens/video devices.
After 2 hours tring to fix the problem without success all computers
have had to be reinstalled. It must be the code, I just can't see the
problem. Unfortunatly I do not have a fix for you, I just wanted to let
people know that this is a very big problem. I don't want everyone to
lose as much as we have!!!

[Bug 57205] MimeType values in .desktop files are not regexps

2006-08-22 Thread Ian Jackson
Public bug reported:

DesktopEntry.py says:
def getMimeType(self):
return self.get('MimeType', list=True, type=regex)

However, the MimeType field is not a regexp according to eg
http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/0.9.5/ar01s07.html

Callers will have to have been expecting to treat the result like a
compiled re (eg, by calling .match). However, they are also entitled to
look inside and see re.pattern and some callers (eg, gnome-app-install)
know that there is this lack of quoting bug in pygtk

So there is no good answer to this. Perhaps it would be best to invent
a getMimeTypeStringList and deprecate the old method. There are some
cryptic comments in DesktopEntry.py relating to deprecation of MimeType.

To reproduce at least one of the symptoms:
 gnome-app-install --mime-type=text/vndXwapYwml
and observe that an XML editor is offered when in fact no application should be
found. Note that the fix should arrange that
 gnome-app-install
and then typing
 text/vnd.wap.wml
into the search box should still find the XML editor.

[Bug 57188] Re: segfault for https+unknown domain

2006-08-22 Thread era
The backtrace looked rather uninformative to me, so here's a strace dump
as well. It looks like it's desperately looking for libnss_mdns and
failing just before it gags.

FWIW I noticed that the strace included some stuff from my bookmarks
etc. so I moved away ~/.w3m and reran:

 vnix$ mv ~/.w3m ~/.w3m.NOT
 vnix$ strace w3m https://nonesvch.example.com 2/tmp/strace-w3m.txt
 vnix$ mv ~/.w3m.NOT ~/.w3m

Incidentally, are you saying you cannot repro this locally? This is on
Dapper/amd64 with universe enabled.

Add me to the list. Dell Insprion 600m toasted by the update.

I suggest posting detailed recovery instructions for those who can no
longer launch an X session to download a fix, e.g. exact `sudo apt-get
install' command. I can probably figure it out once the fix is seeded,
but less experienced users won't know what to do.

It's the simplicity of Ubuntu that many of us like, vs. other distros.
Please consider that as part of this request. :) Thanks.

also can't replicate, and no errors are logged in .xsession-errors or

the processes just vanish, with the result that desktop icons all vanish,
and/or the screen background switches to black, and/or the kicker bar at the

after killing the X session and logging in again, all is well.

no other long-running processes appear to be dying randomly and there

[Bug 57211] xserver-xorg-core 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3 is broken

2006-08-22 Thread Alberto Milone
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 57153 ***

Public bug reported:

The latest updates installed xserver-xorg-core 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3 which
does not seem to work with any video driver (vesa, nv, nvidia).

The only solution is to downgrade to xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10 by
typing:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10

[Bug 57153] Re: 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3 breaks HP nx6125

2006-08-22 Thread Rodrigo Novo
Thanks for the bug report, guys.

Unfortunately I am not able to reproduce this locally, on any of my
machines. The latest package upload of xorg-server has two patches that
might be the responsible for this issue. I have packaged two different
experimental versions of xorg-server, each one removing one of the
mentioned patches.

It would be muchly appreciated if you could test both versions, and
report here, as soon as possible, which one fixes the problem for you.

http://people.ubuntu.com/~rodarvus/packages/dapper/xorg-
server/patch_005/

and

http://people.ubuntu.com/~rodarvus/packages/dapper/xorg-
server/patch_992/

Thank you in advance.

[Bug 57206] Re: xserver not working after upgrade

2006-08-22 Thread Luinux
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 57153 ***

Hello everybody, fist sorry if my English is poor but I'm Spanish, well I'm
affected with this bug too when I do apt-get dist-upgrade, my hardware is an
ATI Radeon Mobile 9700 so I've been using xorg-driver-fglrx with Kubuntu Dapper
6.06.1 I386 and official dapper repositories, the bug ocurrs when package
xorg-server (1:1.0.2-0ubuntu9) is replaced with the new xorg-server
(1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10), when machine restarts kdm isn't able to fire up any
screen/device, I post the error log for people can see I say:

Kdm Error:(Seen in /var/syslog)
IO Error in XOpenDisplay
Display :0 cannot be opened
Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling
-
Xserver Error:(With ati (radeon X.Org) driver)
.(End of log)
(EE) No devices detected

Fatal server error:
no screens found
--
Xserver Error:With propietarie fglrx driver (7.0.0-8.25.18+2.6.15.11-3)
.(End of log)
(EE) No devices detected

Fatal server error:
no screens found
--

Conclusion:
This revision of the package breaks the system, so I raise a question;
Would be possible to downgrade the package version to the prior wich is in
/var/cache/apt/archives in a clean way until the Ubuntu team fix the problem?

Thank's for any answers.

[Bug 57213] Not all header files packed into .deb

2006-08-22 Thread jessy
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I'm using dapper and kernel-package in the follwoing version:
ii  kernel-package 9.001ubuntu15

For build my custom kernel (2.6.17) packages I used the follwoing syntax:
make-kpkg buildpackage --initrd --rootcmd fakeroot --revision 05
--append-to-version -sun-x4100-x4200

After I installed the kernel-image and kernel-headers I wanted to
compile drbd0.7 but the follwoing file is missing:

/lib/modules/2.6.17.6-ubuntu1-sun-x4100-x4200/build/arch/i386/Makefile.cpu
aka
/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.6.17.6-ubuntu1-sun-x4100-x4200/build/arch/i386/Makefile.cpu

In the original source-tree located on a different host it's available,
so it seems that `make-kpkg kernel_headers` is missing something

Cheers
Bjoern

[Bug 56892] Re: Wireless on MacBook not activated easily...

2006-08-22 Thread Henk Koster
Some more info:

With the MacBook placed next to the SpeedTouch 585 base station, the
graphical signal strength indicator stands at 100% under OS X, as one
would expect. Yet, under Linux the signal strength appears only about
54/94, considerably below the 94/94 that one would expect.

The output from iwconfig is attached.

This is in the Browser Nautilus mode.

As a workaround, you may hit the Esc key to return to the location bar.
