[Bug 57189] Unobvious where to report Ubuntu installation problems
Public bug reported: Through trial and error I have found this to be the apparent right place for bug reports about installation problems in Dapper. However, there are various other places where people are reporting bugs against the installer, including ubuntu-express, debian-installer, and ubuntu- meta. It's not clear to me how this should be fixed, but some things come to mind. - Put a pointer in the welcome to ubuntu on-line docs. Probably not a good overall solution, but a useful step for those who look there. - Maybe create a package called ubuntu-live-install or some such which simply redirects to whichever installer is current. For the record, https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+search?text=ubuntu+install displays installation guide and ubuntu express before ubiquity, and unless you happen to know what ubiquity means in this particular context, you are unlikely to land there. - Deprecate ubuntu-express in various visible ways to prevent people from reporting ubiquity bugs there. I have been unable to find out the status and roadmap for ubuntu-express but it seems that that is also part of the problem, rather than (solely) a problem with my abilities. - Similarly, somehow make it clear what the division of responsibilities between debian-installer and ubiquity is. http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/devel/debian-installer looks like d-i should not be used, whereas https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source /debian-installer/+bugs looks like a lot of bugs are being accepted for debian-installer even where they seem to be specific to the live CD installer. - Follow up on bugs reported against ubuntu-express and poke on the reporters to figure out if these are genuine ubuntu-express bugs or actually meant to be reported against ubiquity. (Oh, seems like this is already started; I recall there were many more bugs there last time I looked.) - Add pointers to https://launchpad.net/people/ubuntu- installer/+assignedbugs too, if possible (if nothing else, assign a meta-bug pointing to the right place). For the record, this is the I'm feeling lucky hit in Google for ubuntu installer bugs. Perhaps the search results could be doctored to prefer a more informative page. Or perhaps Google could even be persuaded to sponsor a link to whatever Ubuntu says is the right place. - Update https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InstallerTeam and make sure to keep it up to date. The bugzilla link should be replaced with a launchpad link and the Hoary and Breezy goals should probably be removed; or, at the very least, add Dapper and Edgy. Because my own understanding of the Right Answer is muddy at best, I have to apologize if some parts of this bug report are inaccurate or even preposterous. The bottom line should still be that if people can't figure out where to report bugs, you will not receive reports about all the problems people are having. ** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Unobvious where to report Ubuntu installation problems https://launchpad.net/bugs/57189 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gcc Hi, I recompiled libtorrent library (http://libtorrent.sf.net) with gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 20060817 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-11ubuntu1) and I experience a problem I didn't have with previous versions of gcc. allocate_resources.cpp:80: int libtorrent::saturated_add(int, int): assert « sum = a sum = b » failed. I added some debug messages to the function, as follows: int saturated_add(int a, int b) { assert(a = 0); assert(b = 0); assert(a = resource_request::inf); assert(b = resource_request::inf); assert(resource_request::inf + resource_request::inf 0); int sum = a + b; std::cout a: a '\n'; std::cout b: b '\n'; std::cout (a+b) sum: sum '\n'; std::cout resource_request::inf: resource_request::inf '\n'; if (sum 0){ std::cout sum 0\n; sum = resource_request::inf; std::cout new sum: sum '\n'; }else{ std::cout sum = 0\n; } std::cout sum = a: (sum=a) '\n'; std::cout sum = b: (sum=b) '\n'; assert(sum = a sum = b); return sum; } Here is the output: a: 2147483647 b: 2147483647 (a+b) sum: -2 resource_request::inf: 2147483647 sum = 0 sum = a: 0 sum = b: 0 qbittorrent: allocate_resources.cpp:87: int libtorrent::saturated_add(int, int): assert « sum = a sum = b » failed. How can -2=0 ??? strange, right? My machine is standard: intel centrino 32bits. I'm compiling with this gcc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/qbittorrent_svn/src$ gcc --version gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 20060817 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-11ubuntu1) I tried again with an older gcc: chris-laptop# gcc --version gcc (GCC) 4.0.4 20060630 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.0.3-4) and this gcc worked fine... see: a: 2147483647 b: 2147483647 sum: -2 resource_request::inf: 2147483647 sum 0 new sum: 2147483647 sum = a: 1 sum = b: 1 I don't think the problem comes from libtorrent code. With the lastest gcc the statement -20 is false is this is simply wrong. ** Affects: gcc-defaults (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- [Egdy] gcc has a strange behaviour -2 0 ? https://launchpad.net/bugs/57194 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 57189] Re: Unobvious where to report Ubuntu installation problems
Ubiquity often tells you to file bugs against it when things go wrong. Sadly, it's difficult for someone to determine which part of the installation process is failing. We try to sort bugs into the right place. Of course, adding documentation is a good thing, but there really isn't an official document that describes this adequately. You may wish to edit http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper and add this information there. [Bug 57205] MimeType values in .desktop files are not regexps
Public bug reported: DesktopEntry.py says: def getMimeType(self): return self.get('MimeType', list=True, type=regex) However, the MimeType field is not a regexp according to eg http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/0.9.5/ar01s07.html Callers will have to have been expecting to treat the result like a compiled re (eg, by calling .match). However, they are also entitled to look inside and see re.pattern and some callers (eg, gnome-app-install) know that there is this lack of quoting bug in pygtk So there is no good answer to this. Perhaps it would be best to invent a getMimeTypeStringList and deprecate the old method. There are some cryptic comments in DesktopEntry.py relating to deprecation of MimeType. To reproduce at least one of the symptoms: gnome-app-install --mime-type=text/vndXwapYwml and observe that an XML editor is offered when in fact no application should be found. Note that the fix should arrange that gnome-app-install and then typing text/vnd.wap.wml into the search box should still find the XML editor. ** Affects: pygtk (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- MimeType values in .desktop files are not regexps https://launchpad.net/bugs/57205 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 57188] Re: segfault for https+unknown domain
The backtrace looked rather uninformative to me, so here's a strace dump as well. It looks like it's desperately looking for libnss_mdns and failing just before it gags. Add me to the list. Dell Insprion 600m toasted by the update. I can probably figure it out once the fix is seeded, but less experienced users won't know what to do. It's the simplicity of Ubuntu that many of us like, vs. other distros.
