[Bug 22667] Re: 2.6.12 and above create 100% CPU with xorg on iMac
Just to add a note that I experienced the same problem last week on my iMac Indigo (500 Mhz, 768 Mb RAM). I downloaded the most recent versions of Ubuntu alternate and Xubuntu alternate (the regular ones would not boot) and attempted to install them. After installing it took a very long time for GDM to load and the screen to be drawn. After login I could move the mouse freely, but after clicking on a menu item the system froze. Only a hard reset was possible. Debian Sarge and Debian Sid don't have the same problem. Sarge is running 2.6.8 kernel by default. I tried Yellowdog on the same box and it didn't have this problem as well. It seems to be specific to Ubuntu. The suggested DRI and FBDev options work fine both in Yellowdog and Debian Sarge/Sid and did not have to be uncommented on my box. -- 2.6.12 and above create 100% CPU with xorg on iMac https://launchpad.net/bugs/22667 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 63287] Login screen menu button doesn't look like a menu button
Public bug reported: Forgive me if this is the wrong package to file this against. As I posted here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Kubuntu-Edgy-Ideas-Feedback I have an important concern about the KDM login screen in Edgy. The menu icon (to the left of the username and password fields) is very...cryptic? It is completely unobvious what it does, or that it's even something a user should click on. I'm not a newbie, so I naturally clicked it, figuring it was the menu; but a new Kubuntu or Linux user might not ever realize it's clickable, and might think that they have to log in before they can do something like reboot the computer or shut it down. I think that it should at least be labeled "Menu", or maybe "System Menu", probably with a down arrow next to it to indicate that it's a drop-down menu. (Really, I'm all for KDE and KDM, but I do like the way the GDM theme has always had the simple bar at the bottom with the date, time and shut down/reboot options. Is there some way that could be done in KDM? Can KDM themes do that?) ** Affects: kdebase (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Login screen menu button doesn't look like a menu button https://launchpad.net/bugs/63287 -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 63286] hibernate.sh freezes on "modprobe thermal", anacron not started, kernel upgrades don't finish
Public bug reported: I was very pleased to discover that hibernating worked "out of the box" with Edgy Beta 1 on my old Compaq Presario 1690 laptop (K6-2, 128MB RAM; it really is old). Resuming worked as well, albeit there was a square in the upper left corner of the screen that was a bit corrupted-looking. Logging out and back in fixed that. Then I downloaded some more Edgy updates and installed them, but the initrd generator never finished postinst; it just sat there. I hit Ctrl+C, and the configuration of usplash and powernowd also didn't finish; I had to Ctrl+C them as well. I finally discovered that /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh was still running, and was waiting for "modprobe thermal" to return. I killed the "modprobe thermal" process, and the hibernate script finished running, which included starting anacron. This is dangerous because I'm guessing that, if a new kernel package is installed, but the initrd generator doesn't finish running, the system might be left in an unbootable state. And, of course, whatever else the hibernate script didn't get to finish doing. ** Affects: acpi-support (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- hibernate.sh freezes on "modprobe thermal", anacron not started, kernel upgrades don't finish https://launchpad.net/bugs/63286 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks Hubert, Actually forcing "normal" mode seems to do the trick (on commands line) I guess it is the PTP having the problem. Note it did work fine in breezy, so its now the HW. [Bug 16269] Re: KPPP fails to connect.
I encountered this but in 5.10, I had high hopes for 6.06 but it is still there. I use dial-up. I have used the kppp dialer to connect with Lindows, Linspire, Suse, Mepis. Xandros, and Knoppix. With Kubuntu I have not been able to connect to the internet. I have not been able to find instructions to fix this problem that will work. Maybe someone, someday, somehow, will fix this problem. In the mean time I will move on to another distro if this bug is not fixed in 6.10. [Bug 56265] Re: package conflicts
This is fixed on Edgy's egroupware 1.2-105.dfsg-1. [Bug 62421] Re: no more mtrr available
** Description changed: + Ok I managed to get the normal live install disk to work by editing the xorg.conf file once it started, and when I did the install from it, I don't get the problem (for both knot3 and beta1). I spent a week trying to + figure out what was happening without success, but since the problem disappears when using the normal installer (once you get it to work), this bug can probably be ignored. + + - + Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-9-generic Since installing the edgy knot 3 CD I get errors when trying to load the fglrx driver about "mtrr: no more MTRRs available" If I have a look at /proc/mtrr I have reg00: base=0x ( 0MB), size=1024MB: write-back, count=1 reg01: base=0xd800 (3456MB), size= 128MB: write-combining, count=1 reg02: base=0xd7fc (3455MB), size= 128KB: write-combining, count=1 reg03: base=0xd7f8 (3455MB), size= 256KB: write-combining, count=1 reg04: base=0xd7f0 (3455MB), size= 512KB: write-combining, count=1 reg05: base=0xd7e0 (3454MB), size= 1MB: write-combining, count=1 reg06: base=0xd7c0 (3452MB), size= 2MB: write-combining, count=1 reg07: base=0xd780 (3448MB), size= 4MB: write-combining, count=1 which is completely different to what I got from the kernel in breezy. This results in the ati xorg drivers and even usplash not working at all, and the fglrx drivers being extremely slow. I have been unable to find any userspace tools that setup the mtrr's so I assume it is from kernel changes. lspci -v gives 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 03) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. [Bug 63273] Re: GAIM should not be the sole irc client
I agree as well. Gaim is capable of doing IRC, but it's very poor at best and highly lacking in features. Xchat, Xchat-Gnome, irssi and/or BitchX should be considered. Mainly Xchat and irssi since these are the two most popular IRC clients out there today. As mentioned for a server install, since there is no X, irssi should be the default I would think and irssi and Xchat both should be the default for a regular non-server install. Another issue as reported in another bug/wishlist by myself, is that Xchat is much more wanted and used than Xchat-Gnome, yet Xchat-Gnome is in main and Xchat is in universe. At the very least they should both be in main or it should be the other way around. With default sources, a user installs xchat, and they get xchat-gnome. Then, being an op of #Xchat on Freenode, they come in and ask all sorts of questions about what happened to their beloved Xchat and why it changed it so much instead of asking in #Xchat-Gnome. Very frustrating indeed. IIRC Xchat gets updated on a more regular basis than Xchat-Gnome does and for the most part Xchat-Gnome follows in the footsteps of Xchat so what's the point of not allowing the user to have the choice of either, or the one that is more widely used. -- GAIM should not be the sole irc client https://launchpad.net/bugs/63273 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
