[Bug 70547] the kubuntu 6.10 installer won't use existing ext3 partitions

2006-11-05 Thread Miki
Public bug reported:

I pre-formatted my hard drive using partition-magic 8.0, two ext3
partitions for "/" and for "/home" and a swap partition.

After manually choosing the mount points in the kubuntu installer, it
still claimed that no mount point was chosen for "/", and wouldn't
continue.

Only after going back a screen, and asking the kubuntu installer to
format these partitions by itself, it would accept the choices and
continue.

I am assuming the ext3 format of partition magic 8.0 is correct, because
other distributions (debian sarge, fedora core) have successfully
installed into such pre-formatted ext3 partitions, and the kubuntu
installer itself recognized them as ext3 and swap partitions.

[Bug 70546] X Resolution switch keys no longer work in Edgy

2006-11-05 Thread ifireball
Public bug reported:

The quick resolution change special-key-combinations, e.g. Ctrl+Alt
+Keypad-Plus and Ctrl+Alt+Keypad-Minus seem to have stopped working
since I upgraded to Edgy, this is despite the fact that multiple
resolution are properly configured in xorg.conf, in fact, running
xvidtune -next can still switch the resolution just fine.

Looking more into this, it seems that X still treats this combinations
as special, e.g. they do not generate events on "xev" which means they
are captured by X and not propagated to the user processes.

I suspected the commercial Nvidia driver for causing this but this seems
to occur with the free "nv" driver as well.

2006-11-05 Thread Michael Milligan
Well, same problem here. Fonts are fine in all other apps except OO.
They looked really terrible in OO after first upgrading from dapper to
edgy.

After reading all the comments here, I grabbed libfreetype6 from dapper
(2.1.10-1ubuntu2.2), unpacked it (dpkg -x ...), copied
libfreetype6.so.6.3.8 to /usr/lib, manually fixed the libfreetype6*
symlinks, and that still didn't get it quite back to how it looked in
Dapper, but a lot better. All other apps seem to be fine with this too
(firefox, gaim, sticky notes, panels, etc..)

So, this is mainly something to do with how OO is rendering fonts in
2.0.4.

[Bug 70543] Re: Hibernate uSplash Problems

2006-11-05 Thread Dylan McCall
** Description changed:

+ This happens (and has always happened for me) on up to date Ubuntu Edgy.
+
This is entirely a UI thing, but it's definitely a very ugly UI thing.

When I enter Hibernate mode, no splash screen appears. I am just dumped
to a blank terminal... eventually the computer does its clicky shutting
down stuff and the terminal says it's powering off (I have to hit the
power button manually for some reason).

Okay, that's not too bad. A bit ugly, but meh.

The real problem comes when I am starting back up!
The usplash comes up as usual, but soon the progress bar is obscured by a
giant white box (not fitting into the progress thing, but it goes around that
place) and later the top half of the screen is filled with garbled green stuff.
+ It does start up in the end, and I am greeted rather quickly by a nice login
window against a black background. Very ugly beforehand, of course, and
disconcerting for anyone easily worried by computers.

Curiously, this makes 3 graphics glitches for me:
I have a hunch that Bug #66652 is related to this one. If you want a
description of what my "garbled green stuff" looks like, it is exactly like in
that bug.
I also get bug #67443, which is probably unrelated... but it could be :)
+
+
+ I am running a very old Compaq Presario with an embedded Intel i810 graphics
card and a Celeron <500 mHz processor.
+ The uSplash looks fine normally.

just parses the playlist and then stops. no sound.

[Bug 70542] Re: kubuntu installer crashed on powerbook g4 PPC

2006-11-05 Thread Blake
Pardon for the long post, there was no attachment box on the initial
report screen :-/

One thing I forgot to mention, hda3 and hda5 were partitioned using
OSX's installer (Disk Utility), I selected "Unix filesystem" instead of
HFS+ hoping that it meant ext2 or ext3 by "Unix filesystem". Wishful
thinking, I suppose. But regardless, an odd partition type shouldn't
cause the installer to crash.

This is repeatable from my end, if you'd like to log and and see it for
yourself let me know.

Thanks once again! Keep up the great work.

[Bug 70540] Failure to refresh window contents in Totem

2006-11-05 Thread Bjorn Paulson
Public bug reported:

After opening a .ogg sound file in Totem, open another application with
totem in the background (but not minimized.) When the sound file stops
playing, and the other application is minimized, the Totem window shows
only the visualization and a white box corresponding to the location of
the playlist, rather than the expected menus, playlist, controls, etc.

To reproduce:

1. Open a .ogg sound file in Totem (I have not tried any other sound
formats).

2. Open a program and place its window on top of Totem, while Totem is
not minimized. (Eg. Firefox, epiphany...)

3. When the sound file stops playing, move the other window in front of
the Totem window, and back so you can see Totem. Where the other window
passes, only the Totem background will show, rather than the tools,
menus, and text. (When clicked on, all the contents of the window will
be refreshed.)

[Bug 70537] System Randomly Locks X

2006-11-05 Thread Peter Feger
Public bug reported:

  ntegrated in Chipset
Main Memory Dual Channel Mode (128 bit)

8X AGP slot (not in use)

1 Western digital 80 gig ATA Hard drive
1 Maxtor 80 Gig Hard Drive
1 Seagate 200G Hard Drive
1 DVD/CD Combo R/W drive

This is not a heat issue as each time the cpu temp is at a stable 104 f
system temp 91 f

CPU fan speed at 4200 rpm
Nvidia fan speed ( yeah i added a fan) 4400 rmp
Case fan speed 4400 (2")

THe only way to gain control is to reboot the system. There is no
patteren to this that I can tell. this will happen even if the machine
is booted up and no other programs are run.

On a hunch I removed the powernowd and installed cpufreqd and rebooted
the system. The lockups have stopped. Can this be the cause?

[Bug 61329] Re: [edgy] pppd does not correctly work with pptpconfig

2006-11-05 Thread Christian Haeberli
The result of some more investigation is:
The message "Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP" does not point to
the problem, but causes the problem.

In older Ubuntu releases (e.g. breezy) this message pops up as well, but
the pptpconfig does not care. With edgy, it seems that pptpconfig
suddenly get's confused by that. Probably because an error code is
generated somewhere in the tool chain due to that message.

Getting closer - further investigation is needed.

2006-11-05 Thread Robert Knight
> but the fix itself is a simple patch that could easily be applied to
dapper version of the driver

The Xorg 7.1 code looks quite different from the 7.0 code to me.
Anyhow, a stable version of the Xorg 7.0 ati driver which includes the
memory map fixes has been published upstream (version 6.5.8.1). I would
really appreciate it if that could be made available for Ubuntu Dapper.
Seriously, I will be willing to make a charitable donation a developer's
beer fund.

Can I also request that the importance of this bug be raised. This can
lock up affected PCs (of which there are many in existence) frequently.

I am using Kubuntu Dapper as a platform for KDE development and
something in the latest Qt release seems to trigger this lockup very
frequently.

Switching to EXA accelerations helps - although EXA support seems to
have many rough edges in the X.org 7.0, so much so that using it for day
to day desktop work can be a little painful.

[Bug 70535] Nautilus copy to USB hard drive crashed

2006-11-05 Thread wild.ideas
Public bug reported:

Occurred while copying an 8GB backup file from an internal HD to a USB
HD. The Nautilus process crashed while unattended, likely after the
screensaver had kicked in. ("Blank Screen" was selected for the
screensaver to reduce CPU load.)

[Bug 70533] crash after login to gdm

2006-11-05 Thread Jason Toffaletti
Public bug reported:

DanielHolbach requested that I report a new bug for this problem. I
previously posted information in bug #62297.

https://launchpad.net/products/evolution-exchange/+bug/62297/comments/8

"I'm having a similar problem, but my backtraces look a little different
so I'm attaching them also. I have evolution-alarm-notify starting on
gdm login so I can get notified of events in my calendar. However, after
every login bug buddy pops up to tell me evolution-exchange has crashed.
I think it is related because I see the same crash/hang behavior when I
open evolution and try to view my exchange calendar."

[Bug 24692] Re: Amd64 ubuntu build hogs memory due to badly built libs

2006-11-05 Thread Andrew Ash
I'm sure that info will be handy for the devs. I've subscribed the
AMD64 team to this bug, since I don't really have the power or knowledge
to fix problems. If anything new comes up, keep us posted.

Thanks

[Bug 60053] Re: BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!

2006-11-05 Thread Jon A.
This happened to me tonight as well - as this was one of the few places
I found information on the problem, and more importantly, found a
'resolution', I felt obliged to share.

uname -a
Linux $machineName 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Fri Oct 13 hh:mm:ss UTC 2006 i686
GNU/Linux

I have Ubuntu Edgy Eft installed on a Dell XPS M1210 laptop and until
today, it was always booted with the hardware WiFi switch turned ON. As
I was in a place w/o WiFi earlier in the day I had turned this off and
had problems on every subsequent reboot. After reading most of the way
down this page I rebooted (read 'one finger saluted') the laptop w/ the
hardware switch on - and it worked like a charm.

There seems to be various causes for this - hopefully the dev teams will
give this some attention soon.

No package changes, just booting w/ the hardware switch turned ON was
enough.

Hope this helps someone else!

As a P.S. aside - before this problem, and the reboot w/ the hardware
switch on, I had always had to 'sudo ifup eth1' after booting, but this
time I had an IP by the time I had a desktop. Weird?! Word.

Yes, regressions are alway disappointing :( Let's try to limit further
comments to new information relating to the bug.

Thanks for working with us, guys, and I bet the Ubuntu devs are well
aware of this problem.

[Bug 70532] Newer Logitech Quickcams not properly detected

2006-11-05 Thread JasonVenkiteswaran
Public bug reported:

I have a (usb ID 046d:092e) Logitech Quickcam Chat that does not get
picked up by the current spca5xx driver.

See here for more details:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205782

This thread involves the 046d:092e and 046d:092f cameras.

The new gscpav1 driver works (http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html).

Simple instruction are in the thread above:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1555091&postcount=10
(Essentially download and run 'sudo ./gspca_build').

The spca5xx page does list these devices:
http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html

Can the new version of spca5xx (gscpav1) get pushed into edgy (or at
least into feisty? (Thanks).
