[Bug 70547] the kubuntu 6.10 installer won't use existing ext3 partitions
Public bug reported: I pre-formatted my hard drive using partition-magic 8.0, two ext3 partitions for "/" and for "/home" and a swap partition. After manually choosing the mount points in the kubuntu installer, it still claimed that no mount point was chosen for "/", and wouldn't continue. Only after going back a screen, and asking the kubuntu installer to format these partitions by itself, it would accept the choices and continue. I am assuming the ext3 format of partition magic 8.0 is correct, because other distributions (debian sarge, fedora core) have successfully installed into such pre-formatted ext3 partitions, and the kubuntu installer itself recognized them as ext3 and swap partitions. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- the kubuntu 6.10 installer won't use existing ext3 partitions https://launchpad.net/bugs/70547 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 70546] X Resolution switch keys no longer work in Edgy
Public bug reported: The quick resolution change special-key-combinations, e.g. Ctrl+Alt +Keypad-Plus and Ctrl+Alt+Keypad-Minus seem to have stopped working since I upgraded to Edgy, this is despite the fact that multiple resolution are properly configured in xorg.conf, in fact, running xvidtune -next can still switch the resolution just fine. Looking more into this, it seems that X still treats this combinations as special, e.g. they do not generate events on "xev" which means they are captured by X and not propagated to the user processes. I suspected the commercial Nvidia driver for causing this but this seems to occur with the free "nv" driver as well. ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- X Resolution switch keys no longer work in Edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/70546 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I am just dumped to a blank terminal... eventually the computer does its clicky shutting down stuff and the terminal says it's powering off (I have to hit the power button manually for some reason). The result of some more investigation is: The message "Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP" does not point to the problem, but causes the problem. [Bug 16873] Re: system freeze when using ati radeon 7000 with xorg "ati" driver
> but the fix itself is a simple patch that could easily be applied to dapper version of the driver The Xorg 7.1 code looks quite different from the 7.0 code to me. Anyhow, a stable version of the Xorg 7.0 ati driver which includes the memory map fixes has been published upstream (version 6.5.8.1). I would really appreciate it if that could be made available for Ubuntu Dapper. Seriously, I will be willing to make a charitable donation a developer's beer fund. Can I also request that the importance of this bug be raised. This can lock up affected PCs (of which there are many in existence) frequently. I am using Kubuntu Dapper as a platform for KDE development and something in the latest Qt release seems to trigger this lockup very frequently. Switching to EXA accelerations helps - although EXA support seems to have many rough edges in the X.org 7.0, so much so that using it for day to day desktop work can be a little painful. -- system freeze when using ati radeon 7000 with xorg "ati" driver https://launchpad.net/bugs/16873 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 60053] Re: BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!
This happened to me tonight as well - as this was one of the few places I found information on the problem, and more importantly, found a 'resolution', I felt obliged to share. uname -a Linux $machineName 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Fri Oct 13 hh:mm:ss UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux I have Ubuntu Edgy Eft installed on a Dell XPS M1210 laptop and until today, it was always booted with the hardware WiFi switch turned ON. As I was in a place w/o WiFi earlier in the day I had turned this off and had problems on every subsequent reboot. After reading most of the way down this page I rebooted (read 'one finger saluted') the laptop w/ the hardware switch on - and it worked like a charm. There seems to be various causes for this - hopefully the dev teams will give this some attention soon. No package changes, just booting w/ the hardware switch turned ON was enough. Hope this helps someone else! As a P.S. aside - before this problem, and the reboot w/ the hardware switch on, I had always had to 'sudo ifup eth1' after booting, but this time I had an IP by the time I had a desktop. Weird?!
