[Bug 70384] LightTPD FastCGI uses wrong PHP version

2006-11-05 Thread Noah Medling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lighttpd

The file /etc/lighttpd/conf-available/10-fastcgi.conf (part of lighttpd)
refers to /usr/bin/php4-cgi, effectively making only PHP4 work with
FastCGI by default (and PHP5 produces error messages). Changing this to
/usr/bin/php-cgi (this is what 10-cgi.conf already points to) would run
either version, regardless of which was actually installed.

I don't know what the proposed solution would do if both were installed,
but I suppose if someone had a reason to install both, he/she would also
know how to configure FastCGI or at least where to look for
documentation.

My problem turned out to be with the nvidia drivers in Edgy, when I
upgraded to the beta nvidia drivers it works now.

As for the reported of this bug, I think the file located at
/var/log/Xorg.0.log probably contains the most relevant info perhaps.
Also, there are a number of bugs out there already about the usplash
with edgy, so this could be a duplicate of those (although it affects
you differently).

[Bug 42774] Re: Installer Crash: ValueError: invalid literal for int()

2006-11-05 Thread Mark Janney
I experienced the same problem trying to install Ubuntu 6.0.6. LTS from
the Live CD. [I downloaded and burned the ISO image. It's self-check
passed]

My computer is a Presario 5000Z-1.0 GHz circa 2001
(Full specs at
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c8665lc=encc=usdlc=enproduct=239426)
I have upgraded this machine in four ways: (a) maxed out the RAM to 768 MB, (b)
replaced the original HD with a 80 GB parallel ATA drive, (c) Added a 300 GB
SATA drive accesssed through a PCI bus multi-function card, (d) replaced the
original video card with a WinFast GeForce2 Ultra.

The 80 GB drive is configured to dual boot both WinME and WinXP. (I use
WinME to play certain video games that never migrated to XP). The
primary partition is a 5 GB FAT 32 partition for WinME. The extended
partition contains a 30 GB NTFS partition for WinXP, and a 1 GB NTFS
partition for burning CDs. The rest of the drive is free space.

The 300 GB SATA drive was partitioned into 60 GB primary partition and a
300 GB extended partition split into two logical drives of 150 GB each.
All partitions used NTFS.

My plan was to install Ubuntu on the primary partition of the SATA
drive, and then select Ubuntu by selecting the SATA drive as the boot HD
via my BIOS.

So, I booted Ubuntu from the Live CD and fired up the installer. I chose
the manual partitioning becuase I have data in the extended partiton
that I didn't want to trash. I used the 'resize' and 'new' operations
to split the original 60 GB primary partition into a 1.5 GB swap
partition (formatted as 'linux-swap' and a 58.5 boot partition (which in
my ignorance I left as NTFS). The installer completed without complaint
but nothing was written to the boot partition. After some reading I
learned that Linux can't write NTFS file systems and I needed to format
the boot partition as Ext3.

Armed with this knowledge, I boot again from the Live CD and fire up the
installer. I split the 58.5 GB boot partition into a 15 GB boot partition (for
/ and /boot) and a 43.5 GB partition (for /home). Both partitions were to be
formatted as Ext3. When I tried to go from page 5 to page 6 of the installer,
I got the following crash message. (I have attached the requested logs in a
single file, CrashLogs.txt. The log contents re separated by a delimiter '=
filename ' ).

We're sorry; the installer crashed. Please file a new bug report at

[Bug 70387] tty1 littered with debug info

2006-11-05 Thread Michiel Sikma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

When I start up my computer and switch to tty1 while the nice new usplash
software is running, I seem to get a lot of debugging info from usplash. This
litters the screen and continues to be seen even after usplash has finished its
animation, and when you're trying to log in (which is sometimes confusing, as
the login text is obscured by the debugging information). A small excerpt from
the information:
--
usplash: Using mode 800x600
Calling INT 0x1A (F000:FE6E)
 EAX is 0xB102
Calling INT 0x1A (F000:FE6E)
 EAX is 0xB10A

It would be great if this info could be not sent at all, or sent into the bit
bucket instead of to the screen, at least for those (few?) who sometimes prefer
logging into text-only mode.

[Bug 69455] SRU proposal for 6.10's oprofile 0.9.2-1

2006-11-05 Thread Daniel T Chen
Hi all,

Recently I was made aware of bashisms[0] in the opcontrol script in
Edgy's oprofile 0.9.2-1 that were fixed in Debian's upload of 0.9.2-2.
All arches in Edgy are affected, and only Edgy is affected. For this
reason I've generated a debdiff that changes the invoked shell to
/bin/bash instead of /bin/sh, which is the least invasive and obviously
correct fix.

Attached please find an SRU debdiff for 6.10's oprofile 0.9.2-1.

[Bug 67487] Re: [edgy][regression][rv280] black screen and full freeze when X starts

2006-11-05 Thread shadroth
Unusual setup, with very similar bug

I have two video cards, each with a monitor connected.

I see BIOS, and Ubuntu LiveDVD boot menu on monitor #1
When I select install/start, I see the splash screen on monitor #1, then
blinking cursor, then nothing.I then switched on monitor #2 and there was X.
(This occurs even if I just have one monitor plugged in, I have to move it to
the other socket to see X)

I solved it by editing xorg.conf and changing:

from:
BusID PCI:4:0:0
to:
BusID PCI:5:0:0

Other info.

[Bug 67183] Re: External monitor not working Radeon Mobility M6 LY after a regular Edgy update

2006-11-05 Thread Dag Stenstad
I'm seeing the same behaviour on my ThinkPad T42 with ATI Technologies
Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW running Edgy.

If memory serves me right, I usually get this behaviour when the
external (VGA) screen is plugged in at boot. If I plug in the external
screen after X has started up, I get a cloned display.

However, there is some regression wrt the cloned display; xv overlays
now only get displayed on the internal LCD, and not on the external
screen. This used to work on Dapper, but I remeber I sometimes had to
restart X to get the overlay/external screen to work properly.

Fallback for me is to do video scaling using gl. And reboot my laptop a
lot.

This is apparently cannot be done because the liveCD is one large file.
I am told that rsync can be used if needed.

 That's correct.

Is rsync'ing the livecd with an install cd particularly efficient? What
is the data saving over downloading the livecd in it's entirity?

/var/spool/cron/crontabs is drwx--

I changed them to the following to match a Debian system to see if it helps:
/var/spool/cron: drwxr-xr-x

now it works.

[Bug 68294] Re: [SRU] Freeze Exception Request for dmraid

2006-11-05 Thread Reinhard Tartler
I see 2 ways to go from here:

request the package to be included in edgy-backports. This can be done
via uploading a fixed version to feisty and sync that to edgy-backports
(preferable), or by manually uploading it to edgy-backports. Please file
a seperate bug against the 'ubuntu-backports' product for this,
referencing this bug.

The other thing is to find out which of the patches in
http://librarian.launchpad.net/4936315/diffstat.txt is necessary to fix
the bug. rc9 seem to have worked in dapper for at least some folks, and
we don't like to introduce potential regressions by updating to rc13.

[Bug 70395] Crashed on first boot

2006-11-05 Thread Kingstrum
Public bug reported:

Installed Ubuntu 6.10 from CD, but had old config files from 6.06 in
/home (which was preserved through install). Firefox checked on
extensions from 1.5 for compatibility, found several that wouldn't work
under 2.0, grabbed updates and installed them. Then it began to start
and dumped out with a message to file the bug report with the file I've
included.

The extensions I had installed were:

English (GB) Language Pack 2.0
ScrapBook 1.2.0.5
Sage 1.3.8
ColorZilla 0.8.3.1
Firefox (default) 2.0 [the default theme]
Backgroundimage Saver 0.1.2
FireFTP 0.94.6
Ñandú 0.6
Allow Right-Click 0.4
Nuke Anything Enhanced 0.54
User Agent Switcher 0.6.9
Google Browser Sync 1.3.20061031.0
MediaPlayerConnectivity 0.7.3
UnPlug 1.4.4
Flashblock 1.5.1
Torbutton 1.0.4
Tabbrowser Preferences 1.3.1.1
VideoDownloader 1.1.1
Session Manager 0.4.3

The system caught the crash and issued a request for a bug report to be
filed. I checked around and couldn't seem to find anything similar;
however, the bug report form doesn't appear to have a way to attach the
file it created with detailed info. Let me know and I can send it
separately if needed.

morning. It is almost as if there is a time that isn't reset or something.
I have tried different mice and they all do the same thing.
My current work around is just unplugging my usb mouse and plugging it back in.
This problem was also in dapper.

[Bug 56426] Re: /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon is useless

2006-11-05 Thread Joseph Fannin
Bah, there are many precedents in Debian and Ubuntu for this behavior.
Making /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon ignore the system setting in
/etc/default because people are too lazy or stupid to read the
initscript is dumb when many other packages work this way, including
many in universe (that won't be similarly changed).

What happens when you edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, and don't respect the
Debian/Ubuntu way of doing things? It gets clobbered the next time
update-grub is run.

What happens when you add a line to /etc/modprobe.conf? You get to keep
both pieces. Ubuntu isn't Gentoo, or SysV.

That upgrading to edgy from dapper silently turned off avahi-daemon is a
bug, IMHO, but making /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon ignore /etc/default is
not a fix for that.

What happens when people helpfully add the missing SysV runlevel
symlink for avahi-daemon, and things stop working correctly? The best
answer is you get to keep both pieces, but only after hard-to-
understand bug reports.

Or perhaps it's more well don't do that then which equally applies to
this. If something really must be done for this bug, move the avahi-
daemon script out of /etc/init.d, so people don't find it and expect it
to work a certain way.

[Bug 70397] Misleading error message with failed SMTP auth

2006-11-05 Thread Graeme Hewson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmail

If the wrong password is used when connecting to an SMTP sever, kmail
displays a misleading error message.

The transport is configured with Encryption=None and Authentication
Method=PLAIN. Ethereal shows the transaction as follows (trimmed and
munged):

250-PIPELINING
250-8BITMIME
250-SIZE 15728640
250 AUTH LOGIN PLAIN
AUTH PLAIN
535 authentication failed (#5.7.1)

Kmail then displays the message:

Sending failed:
Your SMTP server does not support PLAIN.
Choose a different authentication method.
The server responded: authentication failed (#5.7.1)
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem
(e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder.
The following transport protocol was used:

The problem is not that the server doesn't support PLAIN. Just entering
the correct password resolves the problem.

[Bug 48772] Re: Firefox randomly crashes

2006-11-05 Thread Paul Bell
Hi... I'm getting random crashes regularly with FF2 (64bit) and Swiftfox
(32bit) on Edgy 6.10 (x86_64 generic). It never happened on Dapper.

There is absolutely no pattern whatsoever, it can happen when I'm
reading a page with no mouse or keyboard activity. The only output in
the terminal is a segfault. I cannot attach a crash report as the
automated crash reporter never kicks in even though I have the 'apport'
service running.

I have tried running with no extensions and a clean profile, makes no
difference.

Anything else I can try to narrow this down?

Cheers ... Paul

[Bug 70400] digikam viewer shows black photos in kde 355

2006-11-05 Thread Toby Dickenson
Public bug reported:

Digikam worked great in dapper using the packages for kde-353.

Since installing kde-355 on dapper I am seeing some problems using
Digikam's internal viewer/editor. The first photo opened is displayed
well. Pressing the 'previous' toolbar button also works, however
pressing 'next' shows a black window and the pixel size indicator show
0x0 pixels. Note that it doesnt matter which photo you start with: the
first one always displays well, all photos shown by pressing 'previous'
display well, but those shown by pressing 'next' do not.

This is with digikam 0.8.2~rc1-0ubuntu3.

[Bug 70403] Strange loss of colors in text-mode terminal

2006-11-05 Thread Michiel Sikma
Public bug reported:

It seems that if you leave a text-mode terminal alone for some time, it
will go into a power-saving mode of some sort. I don't know how to
otherwise describe it, so here are two pictures that show what I mean:

http://thingmajig.org/tmp/strange_0.jpg - normal text-mode terminal
http://thingmajig.org/tmp/strange_1.jpg - the same terminal after being left
alone for a while, missing grey, blue and purple (note: the screen _does_ go
fully blank after some time)

Dapper simply blanked the entire screen instead of doing this, and I
feel it's much better and less awkward that way. I actually don't know
whether this is a bug, or a feature, or a change in default settings,
but either way, I believe that this is worth looking at.

[Bug 70405] Image editor shows black screen

2006-11-05 Thread pointwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: digikam

Steps to reproduce:
1. Click on a jpg image in a Digikam album.
2. In the Digikam image editor, click next.
Result: A black screen.

Detailed info:
This bug is sadly quite random. Sometimes I can click back and the previous
picture shows up just fine. Clicking next thereafter gives me a black screen.

If the editor shows the correct image size, then I can get it to show
the image by clicking the Zoom Autofit button. Using the keyboard
shortcut A doesn't work though! If the editor shows 0x0 pixel size
then I can't get it to show the image and if I try to edit it, Digikam
crashes.

System:
Kubuntu Edgy (upgraded from Dapper). In Dapper it worked, so I have a suspicion
that it started when I upgraded.

dpkg -l digikam libimlib2 libkexif1 | tail -3
ii digikam0.8.2-2ubuntu1 digital photo management application for KDE
ii libimlib2 1.2.1-2ubuntu1.1 powerful image loading and rendering library

It is the window that is too small on its right side, so that part of

[Bug 70406] Latin 1 character in banner

2006-11-05 Thread Dave Love
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dvipng

The `This is dvipng' banner prints the author's name
in Latin 1 encoding, which won't work in utf-8 locales which
I think is the normal Ubuntu default. Short of localizing the
program, it would probably be best to recode the
source files as utf-8, to be more likely right on
Ubuntu systems.

** Affects: dvipng (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
