[Bug 43324] Re: There is no 64 bit package available.
Hi, on 64bit you could create a 32bit chroot and change into it via dchroot ... you can install wine 32bit in there and everything is ok. In my POV it's a better solution then to introduce additional binary packages for only one architecture. I can confirm this problem using Edgy (64bit, gnome) and nvidia-glx. I can also confirm that disabling the the work-around suggested by jamespharaoh (disabling the composite extension) does work. [Bug 72005] OSS apps no longer works, just ALSA, strange hal-device output
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hal I've a bug I can't assign a package easily so I'm reporting it as a HAL bug just because hal-device-manager also shows the problem for example. This is an AMD64 box with Ubuntu 6.10. I had an SB Live! soundcard, softwares written for making sound though both of ALSA and OSS are worked fine. However I've installed a TV tuner card yesterday (Cinergy TV400, SAA7134 chip based). First, I had to play to reorder my PCI card because sound and tuner card affected each other (even lspci don't show one), but now both of them works. However only for ALSA! It seems, audio capabilities of SAA7134 is treated as primary (I even had to use Gnome's sound preferences to set default sound card from SAA7134 to SB Live!) because ALSA apps tried use SAA7134 by default. Ok, it's done. However OSS emulation of ALSA has problems: it tries to use SAA7134, so OSS apps can't make sound now. How can I set up OSS apps to go on working? However the strange thing (the fact that I report this as bug of HAL for): even hal-device-manager states that both of "SB Live! EMU10k1" and "SAA7134 video broadcast decoder" has item "SAA 7134 OSS Midi Device", the latter one has got this three times ... Please note that it does not disturb me too much, my one problem that OSS apps should continue to work with my SB Live! however I can't rank this problem for a package easily as I've written. Maybe it's an ALSA bug, or is it only the lack of some config settings somewhere? ** Affects: hal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- OSS apps no longer works, just ALSA, strange hal-device output https://launchpad.net/bugs/72005 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 72003] screen saver doesn't always wake up
Public bug reported: When waking up from the screen saver (black screen for me), it usually takes about 5 seconds for the display to come back (which is odd, considering that I have an LCD monitor). Anyhow, today my system refused to wake up from the screen saver. I could tell it wasn't hung, because there was disk activity. Ctrl-Alt-Fn didn't help. The monitor was receiving syncs (the light turned from amber to green), but there was no image. I left the system alone long enough for the screen saver to kick in again, and then this time it woke up, and I got my display back. X was still working, the system wasn't frozen, or anything like that. It was simply that the screen saver did not properly wake up the display system from power-save. I'm going to guess that it tried to wake up the display, but something didn't go right, so it got an error. But rather than trying again, it just ignored the error. [Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login
I started a (lonely) thread at ubuntuforums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=290822 that details my problem. One apparently unusual feature of my problem is that I see no errors anywhere and am unable to post a backtrace. I've had this happen on 5 successive rebuilds over the last few weeks, one with Dapper (all on the same machine). I've started to watch carefully and the last time I installed I got the behaviour after bringing the OS up-to-date and installing nvidia drivers and java - nothing else. It *always* happens after a shutdown as opposed to a restart. I've just installed a CLI version of Edgy and manually installed X, nvidia drivers, and other bare-essentials, but I'd like to have a *full* install. I should add that the workaround above does, um, something to the other problem as well. After using it, it seems it's possible to change to card without reboot, but not back again. [Bug 71994] Default sound card selection doesn't work properly or without reboot
Public bug reported: Changing the card in System -> Settings -> Sound (gnome-sound- properties) rewrites ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf fine. amixer and others treat the card as if it were changed. However, the sound will play through the old card at least until reboot which isn't convenient if you want to change the sound card just for using headphones for a little while. gnome-sound-properties doesn't alert the user about the need for reboot. It also always shows that it's always using the same card (the module with the first index, it would appear). Multimedia volume keys do not adhere to the sound card chosen even after reboot - again, it would appear they use the module with the first index. Steps to repeat: 1. Install Ubuntu Dapper or Edgy to a system with two sound cards. 2. Open gnome-sound-properties and change the sound card. 3. Play sound: "aplay /usr/share/sounds/startup.wav" or use totem or rhythmbox. It will use the old card. 4. Open gnome-sound-properties. You will see the old card. 5. Reboot 7. Try multimedia keys - they will change the volume only for the driver module having the first index (cat /proc/asound/modules too see the indices) AFAIK this happens with all hardware. See also for confirmation: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/45786 Workaround to change the module indices to get multimedia keys working: sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base Add the following lines: options snd-whatever-module-you-want-first index=0 options snd-whatever-module-you-want-second index=1 (See "cat /proc/asound/modules" for the modules, and replace '_' characters with '-'.) [Bug 54233] Re: Canon PIXMA IP2200 not in list - Driver Canon doesn't work
Just adding info: Numerous other models like Canon PIXMA iP1000, iP1500 are also not in the list. iP4000 is in the list but the driver doesn't work with iP1000. The Canon PIXMA range (especially the lower models like ip1000) are extremely popular and should be supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu. Binary close-source drivers are available from Canon's website, but in Suse RPM format. As far as I remember, it refuses to properly install on Ubuntu via alien, or if it installs, it doesn't really work. I'm sorry I can't test this further as I don't have access to that printer until January '07. -- Canon PIXMA IP2200 not in list - Driver Canon doesn't work https://launchpad.net/bugs/54233 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 71983] Software Sources Window Closes Upon Opening
Public bug reported: When I try to open the software sources from either synaptic or the "Software Sources" button in the Administration menu, it immediately closes. [Bug 71985] Update/sync package version and contents
Public bug reported: The weird version number (2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5build1) is, as you say, weird. It would be nice to see in the Changelog (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/edgy/+source/sl-modem/+changelog) that the package, along with deb/ubuntu patches, is up-to-date respect to: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/slmodem-2.9.11-20061021.tar.gz And let's please synchronize the version number to match, e.g., 2.9.11-20061021-1 ** Affects: sl-modem (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Update/sync package version and contents https://launchpad.net/bugs/71985 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 70102] Re: Toshiba Satellite A70 always reports lid as closed
Well I got the exactly same effect on my laptop: Samsung X20 since kde 3.5.5 (dapper/edgy) ... It's all working fine in gnome but in kde since 3.5.5 i get this grey box about the a closed lid. When having Suspend Option activated first thing that happens on login is my laptop going to suspend. After re-activating everything is fine ... the laptop even susupends after closing the lid ;) well I don't know what it is but I wanted to notice that gnome does handle the laptop lid right. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed => Confirmed -- Toshiba Satellite A70 always reports lid as closed https://launchpad.net/bugs/70102 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 50477] Re: Please backport newer rhythmbox to dapper-backports
Could you backport 0.9.6 to dapper? It seems to have fixed the unresponsiveness when burning a cd/dvd.
