[Bug 43324] Re: There is no 64 bit package available.

2006-11-15 Thread Stephan Hermann
Hi,

on 64bit you could create a 32bit chroot and change into it via dchroot ...
you can install wine 32bit in there and everything is ok.

In my POV it's a better solution then to introduce additional binary
packages for only one architecture.

Regards,

\sh

[Bug 58232] Re: gnome-terminal does not start when using xinerama and nvidia

2006-11-15 Thread Stephen Martindale
I can confirm this problem using Edgy (64bit, gnome) and nvidia-glx.

I can also confirm that disabling the the work-around suggested by
jamespharaoh (disabling the composite extension) does work.

I'm going to see if I can get the latest nvidia-glx drivers installed
manually - if that solves the problem (without disabling the composite
extension), I will report it here.

[Bug 61751] Re: Mail-notification cannot communicate with Evolution

2006-11-15 Thread Ittai
Perhaps the dependency should be the other way around -- have the
Evolution package depend on mail-notification and mail-notification-
evolution?

Ideally, the packaging system would allow the dependency constraint

  Evolution & mail-notification  -->  mail-notification-evolution

Sadly I'm not aware of any hack for doing that in apt (not that I'm any expert

[Bug 53541] Re: I can't mount any pendrive/usb-stick or card multireader after upgrade (Breezy to Dapper)

2006-11-15 Thread Xavi Miró
I had these symptoms, but I have discovered that this was not an error
of Ubuntu at all. My hard disk drive didn't work properly!

When I plugged it in Windows, it didn't show any error message like
Linux, just it mounted it without problems, but after trying to copy
files it began to show read and write errors.

So, as Linux is more thorough than Windows and tries to verify if the
device works before mounting it, I thought Linux didn't work properly.

[Bug 72007] autoremove function doesnt behave appropriately

2006-11-15 Thread jens_acamedia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

i did an 'apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop' on standard edgy so that i
could then 'apt-get remove evolution etc'

as expected this worked fine and my system wasnt effected - great job
developers!!

only one slight problem - i am now advised that almost all packages
related to the desktop are no longer required and can be removed by
'apt-get autoremove'

but - this is actually a feature - since they were all presumably
installed by ubuntu-desktop

the problem and bug is this - that when i explicitly install all the packages
in the list they are still considered no longer required...they should not be
considered as such when they have been explicitly installed...
-i need an answer to this in part because i want to make a custom ubuntu-distro
so any advice in this direction would help - e.g. does the problem emerge if a
system is installed without ubuntu-desktop but with all packages from a
customized live-cd?

so for example i do 'apt-get install f-spot' and get this output:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
f-spot is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  f-spot libgnomecupsui1.0-1c2a tomboy evolution-webcal ekiga libglew1
openoffice.org-gnome gimp-print
.blablabla LOTS OF PACKAGES.
ssh-askpass-gnome linux-headers-2.6.17-10-generic sound-juicer libpisync0
hplip-data lftp
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

[Bug 72005] OSS apps no longer works, just ALSA, strange hal-device output

2006-11-15 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

I've a bug I can't assign a package easily so I'm reporting it as a HAL
bug just because hal-device-manager also shows the problem for example.
This is an AMD64 box with Ubuntu 6.10. I had an SB Live! soundcard,
softwares written for making sound though both of ALSA and OSS are
worked fine. However I've installed a TV tuner card yesterday (Cinergy
TV400, SAA7134 chip based). First, I had to play to reorder my PCI card
because sound and tuner card affected each other (even lspci don't show
one), but now both of them works. However only for ALSA! It seems, audio
capabilities of SAA7134 is treated as primary (I even had to use Gnome's
sound preferences to set default sound card from SAA7134 to SB Live!)
because ALSA apps tried use SAA7134 by default. Ok, it's done. However
OSS emulation of ALSA has problems: it tries to use SAA7134, so OSS apps
can't make sound now. How can I set up OSS apps to go on working?
However the strange thing (the fact that I report this as bug of HAL
for): even hal-device-manager states that both of "SB Live! EMU10k1" and
"SAA7134 video broadcast decoder" has item "SAA 7134 OSS Midi Device",
the latter one has got this three times ... Please note that it does
not disturb me too much, my one problem that OSS apps should continue to
work with my SB Live! however I can't rank this problem for a package
easily as I've written. Maybe it's an ALSA bug, or is it only the lack
of some config settings somewhere?

[Bug 72006] RTJPEG recordings are extraordinarily large

After upgrading from 0.18 on dapper to 0.20-0.2ubuntu2 on edgy (dist-

quality settings as before (Quality 170, luma 0, chroma 0). Such files
are now 15-20GB/hour, whereas previously they were less than half of

[Bug 72003] screen saver doesn't always wake up

2006-11-15 Thread Timothy Miller
Public bug reported:

When waking up from the screen saver (black screen for me), it usually
takes about 5 seconds for the display to come back (which is odd,
considering that I have an LCD monitor).

Anyhow, today my system refused to wake up from the screen saver. I
could tell it wasn't hung, because there was disk activity. Ctrl-Alt-Fn
didn't help. The monitor was receiving syncs (the light turned from
amber to green), but there was no image.

I left the system alone long enough for the screen saver to kick in
again, and then this time it woke up, and I got my display back.

X was still working, the system wasn't frozen, or anything like that.
It was simply that the screen saver did not properly wake up the display
system from power-save. I'm going to guess that it tried to wake up the
display, but something didn't go right, so it got an error. But rather
than trying again, it just ignored the error.

The screen saver should MAKE SURE the display wakes up when it's
supposed to.

[Bug 71914] Re: python2.5 ctypes.c_longlong has wrong size (32 bits instead of 64)

2006-11-15 Thread David Cournapeau
After many different compilation of python2.5 from ubuntu packages and
from original source (python.org), I managed to find the problem: the
configuration option --with-system-ffi, which is used by the ubuntu
package. If I use this option for original sources of python, I have the
same problem.

I don't really understand how libffi is used, so I don't really know how
to go further.

[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

2006-11-15 Thread Greg Newton
I started a (lonely) thread at ubuntuforums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=290822
that details my problem.
One apparently unusual feature of my problem is that I see no errors anywhere
and am unable to post a backtrace.
I've had this happen on 5 successive rebuilds over the last few weeks, one with
Dapper (all on the same machine).
I've started to watch carefully and the last time I installed I got the
behaviour after bringing the OS up-to-date and installing nvidia drivers and
java - nothing else.
It *always* happens after a shutdown as opposed to a restart.
I've just installed a CLI version of Edgy and manually installed X, nvidia
drivers, and other bare-essentials, but I'd like to have a *full* install.

This thread seems to be all over the place in terms of symptoms. Is
there anyone with a sense of how or if they are tied together?

Is there something I could post (or do) that would be of help?

[Bug 71997] Include OCFS2/CLUSTER/GFS in non-server kernels

2006-11-15 Thread Jerry Haltom
Public bug reported:

linux-source-2.6.15 (2.6.15-12.17) dapper; urgency=low

  Changed by Ben Collins:

  * Disable CLUSTER, OCFS2 and GFS for desktop kernels on i386 and amd64. The
-server kernels are suggested for these.

 -- Ben Collins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thu, 12 Jan 2006 13:41:20 -0500

Though I agree with having separate server kernels for advanced features
which effect the core of the kernel, I don't think OCFS2 belongs in
this. Unless I am mistaken, it is nothing more than an additional
module. It's inclusion doesn't effect the desktop kernels at all. I
might be wrong. If so, let me know.

Not including it doesn't do much more than save a few KB and make it
more difficult for me to try it out on my desktop machine without
jumping through hoops.

I suspect (but cannot confirm) that GFS falls under the same category.

[Bug 71994] Default sound card selection doesn't work properly or without reboot

2006-11-15 Thread Aleksi Nurmi
Public bug reported:

Changing the card in System -> Settings -> Sound (gnome-sound-
properties) rewrites ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf fine. amixer and others
treat the card as if it were changed.

However, the sound will play through the old card at least until reboot
which isn't convenient if you want to change the sound card just for
using headphones for a little while. gnome-sound-properties doesn't
alert the user about the need for reboot. It also always shows that it's
always using the same card (the module with the first index, it would
appear). Multimedia volume keys do not adhere to the sound card chosen
even after reboot - again, it would appear they use the module with the
first index.

Steps to repeat:
1. Install Ubuntu Dapper or Edgy to a system with two sound cards.

2. Open gnome-sound-properties and change the sound card.

3. Play sound: "aplay /usr/share/sounds/startup.wav" or use totem or
rhythmbox. It will use the old card.

4. Open gnome-sound-properties. You will see the old card.

5. Reboot

7. Try multimedia keys - they will change the volume only for the driver
module having the first index (cat /proc/asound/modules too see the
indices)

AFAIK this happens with all hardware.

See also for confirmation:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/45786

Workaround to change the module indices to get multimedia keys working:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Add the following lines:
options snd-whatever-module-you-want-first index=0
options snd-whatever-module-you-want-second index=1

(See "cat /proc/asound/modules" for the modules, and replace '_'
characters with '-'.)

If you know a way to make applications use the selected sound card
without reboot, please share it with us.

I have not had any problems since upgrading to Edgy - (Kubuntu 6.10 - x86)
Could you provide steps required to produce this crash... are they the same as
reported above

(looking at the crash report - it does not appear to be related to the
widget - charset combo problem?)

I hope this helps...

libnautilus-burn-dev is too old in dapper (and I am not sure it can be

[Bug 71986] Mercury Cyberpix S-550V does not work with included spca5xx, works with latest release

2006-11-15 Thread Prashant Vaibhav
Public bug reported:

The Mercury Cyberpix S-550V digital camera's in-built webcam mode does
not work out-of-the-box with the spca5xx driver that comes with Ubuntu.

However, the camera is listed on the compatibility chart -
http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html

Downloading, compiling and installing the latest gspca (not spca5xx)
kernel module fixes the problem. I am not sure why but I have to
manually make sure all spca5xx module files are deleted before
installing gspca, otherwise the old spca5xx module loads up when the
camera is plugged in, even after installing the new one.

Please consider replacing the scpa5xx module that comes with ubuntu
(dapper/edgy) with the latest ones available from -

[Bug 54233] Re: Canon PIXMA IP2200 not in list - Driver Canon doesn't work

2006-11-15 Thread Prashant Vaibhav
Just adding info:

Numerous other models like Canon PIXMA iP1000, iP1500 are also not in
the list. iP4000 is in the list but the driver doesn't work with iP1000.
The Canon PIXMA range (especially the lower models like ip1000) are
extremely popular and should be supported out-of-the-box by Ubuntu.

Binary close-source drivers are available from Canon's website, but in
Suse RPM format. As far as I remember, it refuses to properly install on
Ubuntu via alien, or if it installs, it doesn't really work. I'm sorry I
can't test this further as I don't have access to that printer until
