[Bug 73713] missing sanity checking for the -e switch

2006-11-28 Thread sabik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

version: edgy eft

steps to reproduce:
> sudo software-properties -e univers
(note the misspelling)

This puts the word "univers" into /etc/apt/sources.list in such a way
that software-properties can't take it out and apt-get can't cope with
it. For instance, subsequently doing "-e universe" is ineffective.

Workaround: edit /etc/apt/sources.list and delete the misspelled word.

** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

** Summary changed:

- missing sanity checking for the -e switch

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 67299 ***

To my understanding, this bug is due a wrong way to parse
/etc/mdadm/mdadm for UUID, but not the inability to locate the disk with
such UUID as in bug 67299.

[Bug 73710] Re: sane behavior for wrong /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf

2006-11-28 Thread Alan Tam
I do not agree this bug is a duplicate of bug 67299. I was aware of bug
67299 and bug 6 when I reported it.

This bug concerns when the config is wrong. Bug 6 is about when the
config is correct but in an unexpected format. Bug 67299 is about when
the whole disk is used for RAID.

[Bug 73710] sane behavior for wrong /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf

2006-11-28 Thread Alan Tam
Public bug reported:

After upgraded to Edgy, my system took 3 minutes on boot before i can
leave the initrd. After careful investigation of the scripts in the
initrd, I found that there is a wrong UUID embedded in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.
This caused the loop in /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/md
to spin for 180 seconds before it dies.

I guess there is a better way to do that. 180 seconds is too long. I
guess no device would need more than 15 seconds to be activated. This
long wait make people feel that they machine is actually frozen, since
no progress bar is shown during the time. I know it doesn't want to
print something to mess up usplash, but they added up (no progress + 180
seconds) gives an insane experience.

I did not have to use the acpi=force option. With my setup it seemed
turning off the cool and quiet option in the bios alleviated the
shutdown reboot issue, however. I'm on a desktop machine so this is not
an issue. Users who need cpu scaling may not want to turn of these
types of options.

[Bug 73706] Incorrect names of tabs in gnome-power-properties

Public bug reported:

Hi, I am not sure whether this is a good place to report such thing but
I noticed (already in Dapper) that using Canadian locale (en_CA) in

after their names (e.g. "Running on AC Power"). When locale
changed to en_US it disappeared. I would include a screenshot, but I
don't know how to add a picture here. If really needed, I can provide.

somehow. Thus if I do the following:

[Bug 42612] Re: OpenOffice does not open the default document

2006-11-28 Thread Kari Aliranta
I can confirm this for Xubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft and Xfce with latest
updates. To be precise: if I launch any Openoffice instance from the
Xfce menu, the default document doesn't get opened - however, equivalent
desktop shortcuts work fine. Could therefore be a bug in how the Xfce
system menu is handled, though couldn't find anything about this in Xfce
bugtracker.

So: which desktop environment are you people using?

Anyway, I found a workaround at least for Xfce: in
/usr/share/applications, if you remove the "%U" from the end of the exec
line in each Openoffice desktop file (for example change "ooffice
-writer %U" into "ooffice -writer"), the default documents get opened
all right when you click the menu entry.

As I mentioned, the desktop shortcuts with the equivalent exec lines
work fine: if you drag the desktop files from the aforementioned folder
on the desktop - or just create a desktop shortcut through the right-
click menu - the "%U"-ending stays, but the default documents still get
opened when the the program is started through the shortcut.

[Bug 72958] Re: BackupPC gives fileListReceive failed error

2006-11-28 Thread ward
Confirmed here, I think. Something in Edgy's rsync is triggering this
bug.

Running backuppc off a Debian sarge box with ubuntu edgy clients fails
with the infamous 'fileListReceive failed' error. Dapper clients back up
without problems.

I compiled the source .deb from feisty (0.64-1) and put it on my Sarge
box, but that did not help, it still contains the (upstream?) bug.

I then applied the 0.64-1 package diff to the 0.68 source .tgz, created
an 0.68 package that way, but I still get the same error.

Hrm.

[Bug 36014] Re: kernel can't scale cpu frequency

2006-11-28 Thread Constantine Evans
I must say, this bug is the worst I have worked with. I had thought that
the patches that were included in 2.6.17 fixed the issue, but the PPC
commenting method still works to solve the issue, it is apparent that
the bug still exists.

I have a few thoughts about how the bug might be solved, but none of my
ideas are without disadvantages. It would not be overly difficult to
write a patch that, if a Pentium M was detected, and the PPC tried to
limit the frequency in this way (min_freq==max_freq), would cause the
PPC's advice to be ignored. However, there is a possibility that this
would not solve the problem for everyone, and it is also possible that
it would cause problems for others. It might prove to be hard to
maintain, as well, since I do not believe that such a patch would be
considered suitable for inclusion in the vanilla kernel.

Unfortunately, I still don't understand *why* the PPC gives this false
information. Does anyone have any ideas?

[Bug 71835] Re: In Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft: Evolution don't show e-mail messages after save a message and your attachment.

2006-11-28 Thread Adam Kessel
This may be related to a problem I'm having -- if not, let me know if
this should be a separate bug report. New in Edgy, the preview window
often gets stuck on a particular message (or sometimes with no contents
at all), and no amount of changing folders or changing messages or
opening and closing messages makes any difference -- the preview window
is just stuck. I'm also getting fairly regular crashes.

Stopping and starting evolution usually, but not always, fixes it for a
short while.

I have an unverified hunch that message previews with certain
combination of images -- perhaps hyperlinked images -- cause the
problem.

[Bug 73686] oem-config doesn't setup device permissions in kde

2006-11-28 Thread metaeoc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: oem-config

This is a strange one - I loaded the oem ubuntu install and did apt-get
install kde kubuntu-desktop - and after I did oem-config-prepare and
rebooted it didn't record my username and password, I would have had to
start over, save for the recovery console which let me in so I could
adduser and passwd root - but now my audio card is not recognized as
normaluser, in KDE and Gnome. But alsamixer works fine as root in tty1.

Using - 6.06 LTS

This could be a security vulnerability

[Bug 48712] Re: missing libplibjs.so.1.8.4

2006-11-28 Thread Laurie Bradshaw
I'm seeing the same thing on edgy, libplibjs.so.1.8.4 missing from
plib1.8.4c2 (plib1.8.4-4.1-ubuntu1)

Just had a quick look, and it's due to an error in src/js/jsLinuxOld.cxx

-#if !defined(JS_VERSION) || JS_VERSION >= 0x01
+#if !defined(JS_VERSION) || JS_VERSION < 0x01

fixes it for me (look at the corresponding define in src/js/jsLinux.cxx)
:)

[Bug 73685] Networking not working in version 6.10 AMD64

2006-11-28 Thread James Booth
Public bug reported:

When clicking System, Administration, Networking; I am not prompted for
an administrative password. The network settings window appears, and a
"wired connection" and a "modem connection" are listed. There is a
"properties" button, but there are no "activate" or "deactivate"
buttons. I am able to configure both the modem and the ethernet by
clicking on "properties", but I cannot use them because there is no way
to activate the connection.

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS was previously installed on this particular machine and
Networking worked just fine. I erased the hard drive before installing
Ubuntu version 6.10 for a clean installation.

Please sync dbconfig-common (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

Changelog since current feisty version 1.8.25ubuntu1:

dbconfig-common (1.8.29) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Fabio Tranchitella discovered that in some environments passwords
could be generated with illegal UTF8 characters. the fix was simple

dbconfig-common (1.8.28) unstable; urgency=low

  * update package decscription to include mention of sqlite support.
  * preseeding values were still being dropped if debconf priority
was set to >= high. should be fixed now. thanks to Finn Smith
for his continued vigilance :)

 -- sean finney <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mon, 30 Oct 2006 14:05:46 +0100

dbconfig-common (1.8.27) unstable; urgency=high

  * the "patch to fix the patch to fix the patch to fix the bug" release
  * unregistered pgsql questions were being asked even in mysql packages,
causing confusion, breakage, chaos, riots, etc. fixed.
closes: #393124.

 -- sean finney <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sun, 15 Oct 2006 18:42:24 +0200

dbconfig-common (1.8.26) unstable; urgency=high

  * the previous upload included a changelog entry that closed the
wrong bug. it should have read "(closes: #391960)".
  * preseeding for apt-preconfigured packages was broken, at the very
least for multidbtype packages but i suspect it was completely
broken. should be fixed now. (closes: #392681).
  * previous version hasn't made it to testing, and these are all nasty
bugs we want out of etch <=> urgency stays high.
  * Updated Catalan debconf template
