[Bug 76958] cannot change screen resolutions used by preferences panel
Public bug reported: Trying out the 6.10 live cd for ppc32 on an ibook. The standard autodetect went well and system came up in 800x600 mode. The system->preferences->screen resolution only offered a choice of 640x480 and 800x600 modes. [Bug 33620] Re: Floppy icon on desktop will not open
I am using Dapper Drake. I still have this problem, though it has changed somewhat since I made this report. Now when I insert a floppy into the USB drive, it will automount and open it, which is very nice. However, when I go to open it again (having first closed the window that came up showing the files) using the icon I created on the desktop (not the one that it auto-created), it gives me this error: Unable to mount the selected floppy drive. error: /dev/sda is already mounted to /media/floppy error: could not execute pmount If I click on the auto-created icon it works fine, but if I unmount ("eject") the volume and then click on the icon that I made, it will mount it again, creating another icon, and then not open a window with the files on the drive. Repeated clicking on the homemade icon produces the error above. Clicking on the auto-created icon opens up a window showing the files. Since an icon is now created on the desktop when a floppy is inserted, this is not such a problem for me; it's really just an annoyance that I can't have a floppy icon always on the desktop for mounting/unmounting the volume at will instead of having to remove/insert the disk. [Bug 73992] Re: Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/hotkey-setup_0.1-17ubuntu3_i386.deb'
The problem appears to be that when the hotkey-setup package is being replaced, one of its scripts calls invoke-rc.d on /etc/init.d/hotkey- setup and that script returns an error which prevents the package from being removed. I saw this same behavior several times, first when I did an "apt-get dist-upgrade" and later when I did a "dpkg --purge --ignore- depends=ubuntu-desktop hotkey-setup". [Bug 76949] Ubuntu documentation and marketing confuses gratis with libre/free/open source
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs The Ubuntu documentation and marketing sometimes confuses gratis with Free and Open Source. For example, about-ubuntu.xml says "The Ubuntu project is entirely committed to the principles of open source software development; people are encouraged to use open source software, improve it, and pass it on. This means that Ubuntu is and will always be free of charge." But being open source doesn't mean being gratis (no charge). The Open Source Definition explicitly says open source software can be sold. Similarly, this document goes on to say "Free software" doesn't just mean that you shouldn't have to pay for it." Free software *doesn't* mean you don't have to pay for it. The FSF explicitly rejects that idea, as shown by http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html . There's similar text on the website, such as on the home page, which says "Ubuntu is Free Software, and available to you free of charge. [...] Ubuntu team really does believe that Free software should be free of software licencing charges." This is confusing selling copies with charging for licensing. Free software is inherently free of licensing charges, since you don't have to pay again for each computer you install the software on. The philosophy page says "For Ubuntu, the "free" in "free software" is used primarily in reference to freedom and not to price" which is similarly hinting that the "free" in Free software can mean gratis. ** Affects: ubuntu-website (upstream) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Also affects: ubuntu-website (upstream) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Ubuntu documentation and marketing confuses gratis with libre/free/open source https://launchpad.net/bugs/76949 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 76944] Improve yelp index layout
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: yelp I'm going to attach a debdiff which improves the yelp index layout, in line with changes made to the ubuntu-docs document structure for this release. It produces something like this: http://mdke.org/tmp/yelp.png It has at least the following problems, some of which I am not able to fix (it's my first time with a vaguely serious patch): * The new text added in stylesheets/toc2html.xsl needs to be localisable - I don't know how to do this. * The debdiff itself has some strange problems: some files appear only with a timestamp change, and there is some strange stuff at the end. I suspect these were caused by the fact that I had a number of attempts to make my changes, but I don't know how to fix it. * The bullet points are laid out badly. * It doesn't include a dependency which we will need to add: if these changes are made we will need yelp to depend on ubuntu-docs, because the links in the "Common questions" section will point to documents shipped with ubuntu-docs. Anyway, any feedback is very welcome. ** Affects: yelp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Improve yelp index layout https://launchpad.net/bugs/76944 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 76833] Proposed solution not requiring a change in FF package
Thank you for acknowledging my grievances over the Firefox issue. I did a little more research on the issue and found that there is a package for XUL already listed in the repositories. The Gecko split is what is needed and maybe not even that. In fact, it may even best to just create a separate libgecko (and related dependencies) package for Epiphany, Galeon, &c to use instead of having to directly depend on Firefox being installed. In this solution, nothing in question would be done to the Firefox package, however an extra library would be placed in the repositories that would have to be downloaded along with said browsers. Also Someone has confirmed that gxine does not depend on Gecko but it does depend on Firefox's JS library and that they are working on a fix to this abnormality. -- Firefox dependence bugs https://launchpad.net/bugs/76833 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 75271] Re: edgy kmid "Could not open /dev/sequencer"
Hi Katie, nice that someone reacts on my error-report - at least confirming that not 'only you' has the problem. In the meantime I think this might also be an installer-problem (maybe synaptic), not specifically a KMid error. I reported the problem 2006-12-10. In the meantime I downloaded a lot of patches / updates. Maybe uninstall and reinstall of KMid would solve the problem in the case the installer was improved in the meantime. [Bug 76941] [Feisty] "Places" view is polluted by unwanted/unmounted local hard drive partitions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Title says it all :-) I have two version of Linux on my machine (nothing exotic: Edgy for work, Feisty for testing), plus a couple fat/Windows partition. Each Linux is on its own hard drive, with separate home and swap partition. The problem is that it makes no sense to me, it is useless, for example, to see the partitions of Edgy when I am using Feisty, and vice versa. The problem is that Nautilus now shows partitions that I have NOT mounted, hence that I do NOT want to see ! I tried right-clicking on them to select "remove" from the menu, but this option is greyed out ! :-/ Seeing all these unwanted partitions sitting there in the side bar all the time (with weird names on top of that), polluting the other partitions that I do use, is annoying as hell. Looks really untidy, hurts usability, and induces a horrible feeling of powerlessness when you realise you can't get rid of them :-/ Don't get me wrong...I think it's GREAT to have a GUI that shows all unmounted partitions and lets you mount them easily. HOWEVER, such a GUI should not be part of the main Nautilus window ! Mounting local hard drive partitions is an administrative task, so it should have a GUI of its own. In Dapper there used to be a nice little tool to do just that ("disk-admin" IIRC), which was great. Of course the GUI itself was buggy and needed development, but the basic idea/concept was just fine I felt. Having a GUI of its own would also allow to have more features for added usability/user-friendlyness (allow to specify a mount point with a name of OUR choice to start with, rather than being imposed a label arbitrarily, as is the case at present.) ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- [Feisty] "Places" view is polluted by unwanted/unmounted local hard drive partitions https://launchpad.net/bugs/76941 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
