[Bug 41048] Re: Application wont start

2006-12-22 Thread Pascal Giard
This is a known problem.

I used to warn the user about having to restart bonobo but I removed it
has it was not appropriate for debconf.

But I should have a look at how to inform the user about this in an
update-notifier-way.

2006-12-22 Thread Pascal Giard
Claudio: mail-notification --sm-disable as i have in [Session -> Auto
start programs], always open the properties window. It only happens if
no mailboxes are set. Is it expected?

yes, it is.

Claudio: The new option [Autostart Mail Notification upon session
opening] (as expected) is not translated. I can translate for pt_BR.
Anyone else?

I'd gladly take your translation. I did the one for french.

Claudio: Are you suggesting it upstream?

I already did. The upstream author says that the user should do it the
Gnome way. Namely adding mail-notification by going in Desktop ->
Preferences -> Sessions.

[Bug 76958] cannot change screen resolutions used by preferences panel

2006-12-22 Thread subrime
Public bug reported:

Trying out the 6.10 live cd for ppc32 on an ibook. The standard
autodetect went well and system came up in 800x600 mode.

The system->preferences->screen resolution only offered a choice of
640x480 and 800x600 modes.

As per the ubuntu troubleshooting documents, I went to edit the xorg
conf file but found it already included the 1024x768 mode.

>From some advice on the ubuntu irc channel I tried to remove all
resolutions except the 1024x768 mode, and restarted xorg, but this had
no effect on the situation.

The screen resolution preferences should either follow the xorg conf
file or offer their own method of controlling allowed modes.

[Bug 33620] Re: Floppy icon on desktop will not open

2006-12-22 Thread DaneM
I am using Dapper Drake. I still have this problem, though it has
changed somewhat since I made this report. Now when I insert a floppy
into the USB drive, it will automount and open it, which is very nice.
However, when I go to open it again (having first closed the window that
came up showing the files) using the icon I created on the desktop (not
the one that it auto-created), it gives me this error:

Unable to mount the selected floppy drive.
error: /dev/sda is already mounted to /media/floppy
error: could not execute pmount

If I click on the auto-created icon it works fine, but if I unmount
("eject") the volume and then click on the icon that I made, it will
mount it again, creating another icon, and then not open a window with
the files on the drive. Repeated clicking on the homemade icon produces
the error above. Clicking on the auto-created icon opens up a window
showing the files.

Since an icon is now created on the desktop when a floppy is inserted,
this is not such a problem for me; it's really just an annoyance that I
can't have a floppy icon always on the desktop for mounting/unmounting
the volume at will instead of having to remove/insert the disk.

Thanks for taking notice of this bug report! I hope it's an easy one to
fix. :-)

[Bug 66573] Re: nspluginviewer hangs up whole X server

2006-12-22 Thread Timothy Miller
I'm using Dapper, and KDE 3.5.2.

You can't reproduce this on a cleanly-booted system. I've tried to
discover exactly what sequence of steps will reliably cause this to
happen, but I haven't been able to. A few hunches I have include:

- Already have been using flash, in Firefox
- Multiple flash widgets active at once
- Flash taking and not releasing an X server grab.

I'll try Edgy as soon as they make upgrades work for software RAID.

[Bug 73992] Re: Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/hotkey-setup_0.1-17ubuntu3_i386.deb'

2006-12-22 Thread Mark Kohler
The problem appears to be that when the hotkey-setup package is being
replaced, one of its scripts calls invoke-rc.d on /etc/init.d/hotkey-
setup and that script returns an error which prevents the package from
being removed. I saw this same behavior several times, first when I did
an "apt-get dist-upgrade" and later when I did a "dpkg --purge --ignore-
depends=ubuntu-desktop hotkey-setup".

Eventually I just added an "exit" to the beginning of /etc/init.d
/hotkey-setup and then I was able to remove the package and then install
the Edgy version.

Here's the error message I would get when I tried to remove hotkey-
setup:

I'm not entirely sure how the database works when moving from 4.3 to

Maybe I can get some time to setup a test environment with dapper and

[Bug 76953] Display is corrupt in gnome-terminal

2006-12-22 Thread Glenn Ammons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nethack-x11

Nethack's display is corrupt in gnome-terminal. Some items and
characters display as spaces instead of as their normal character. For
example, spellbooks don't display as "+". A shopkeeper also displayed
as a space. The "/" command will show these items/creatures in their
normal form if you move the cursor over them.

I've tried setting TERM to "ansi", "xterm", and "xterm-256color". All
have the same problem.

[Bug 76949] Ubuntu documentation and marketing confuses gratis with libre/free/open source

2006-12-22 Thread Matthew Flaschen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The Ubuntu documentation and marketing sometimes confuses gratis with Free and
Open Source. For example, about-ubuntu.xml says "The Ubuntu project is
entirely committed to the principles of open source software development;
people are encouraged to
use open source software, improve it, and pass it on. This means that
Ubuntu is and will always be free of charge."

But being open source doesn't mean being gratis (no charge). The Open
Source Definition explicitly says open source software can be sold.

Similarly, this document goes on to say "Free software" doesn't
just mean that you shouldn't have to pay for it." Free software
*doesn't* mean you don't have to pay for it. The FSF explicitly rejects
that idea, as shown by http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html .

There's similar text on the website, such as on the home page, which
says "Ubuntu is Free Software, and available to you free of charge.
[...] Ubuntu team really does believe that Free software should be free
of software licencing charges." This is confusing selling copies with
charging for licensing. Free software is inherently free of licensing
charges, since you don't have to pay again for each computer you install
the software on. The philosophy page says "For Ubuntu, the "free" in "free
software" is used primarily in reference to freedom and not to price" which is
similarly
hinting that the "free" in Free software can mean gratis.

[Bug 76944] Improve yelp index layout

2006-12-22 Thread Matthew East
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I'm going to attach a debdiff which improves the yelp index layout, in
line with changes made to the ubuntu-docs document structure for this
release. It produces something like this: http://mdke.org/tmp/yelp.png

It has at least the following problems, some of which I am not able to
fix (it's my first time with a vaguely serious patch):

* The new text added in stylesheets/toc2html.xsl needs to be localisable - I
don't know how to do this.
* The debdiff itself has some strange problems: some files appear only with a
timestamp change, and there is some strange stuff at the end. I suspect these
were caused by the fact that I had a number of attempts to make my changes, but
I don't know how to fix it.
* The bullet points are laid out badly.
* It doesn't include a dependency which we will need to add: if these changes
are made we will need yelp to depend on ubuntu-docs, because the links in the
"Common questions" section will point to documents shipped with ubuntu-docs.

Anyway, any feedback is very welcome.

Re: [Bug 76833] Proposed solution not requiring a change in FF package

2006-12-22 Thread faolan
Thank you for acknowledging my grievances over the Firefox issue. I did a
little more research on the issue and found that there is a package for XUL
already listed in the repositories. The Gecko split is what is needed and maybe
not even that. In fact, it may even best to just create a separate libgecko (and
related dependencies) package for Epiphany, Galeon, &c to use instead of having
to directly depend on Firefox being installed.

In this solution, nothing in question would be done to the Firefox package,
however an extra library would be placed in the repositories that would have to
be downloaded along with said browsers.

Also Someone has confirmed that gxine does not depend on Gecko but it does
depend on Firefox's JS library and that they are working on a fix to this
abnormality.

I think this should fix it.

[Bug 62161] Re: Konq crashes on clicking every other link out of knode.

2006-12-22 Thread Rob Hughes
Check http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde-355/dists/edgy. Seems to be there.
I know that after adding that, I got very close to an entire updated
KDE.

[Bug 76905] Re: Unmet build deps (feisty)

2006-12-22 Thread Thomas Folz-Donahue
Yes. That is Debian's name for that package. Ubuntu calls it libglu1
-mesa-dev. The 'felt' package will need to change to reflect this.

[Bug 76844] Re: Can't remove python-pygame package

2006-12-22 Thread John Pye
Hi again,

Thanks for the script location. I checked the script and found that it
uses 'pycentral' which unfortunately I had moved while trying to
uninstall another (Ubuntu official) package (K-3D), and forgotten to
replace. I reinstalled the package 'python-central' and everything
worked.

Sorry for troubling you, and thanks for your help.

Cheers
JP

[Bug 75271] Re: edgy kmid "Could not open /dev/sequencer"

2006-12-22 Thread Gerhard Klünger
Hi Katie,

nice that someone reacts on my error-report - at least confirming that
not 'only you' has the problem.

In the meantime I think this might also be an installer-problem (maybe
synaptic), not specifically a KMid error.

I reported the problem 2006-12-10. In the meantime I downloaded a lot of
patches / updates. Maybe uninstall and reinstall of KMid would solve the
problem in the case the installer was improved in the meantime.

Gruß, Gerhard
BTW: I am from Austria (not from Bavaria / Bayern). The proper term is "Grüß
Gott" (with 'umlaut u') and rather an official form of greeting in Bayern /
Germany and Austria.

[Bug 52670] Re: Kubuntu setting default components don't affect gnome/gtk apps

2006-12-22 Thread Nick Coghlan
>From an end-user POV, this definitely lands in the bug category (it just
bit me today when I finally migrated my main email & RSS PC over to Edgy
from XP - blog links in Thunderbird's RSS reader insisted on opening in
Konqueror instead of in Firefox, even though I had already changed my
browser preference. This bug report was the first hit on a Google search
for 'thunderbird konqueror').

I like Yuriy's solution: point x-www-browser at 'kfmclient openURL
' as part of the default Kubuntu install. That should get the
normal situation ('I don't care if it's a GTK or Qt app, I just want it
to do what I want') right, and power users that want to use both Gnome &
KDE and have them behave differently are still free to go in and change
it.

[Bug 76941] [Feisty] "Places" view is polluted by unwanted/unmounted local hard drive partitions

2006-12-22 Thread Trouilliez vincent
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Title says it all :-)

I have two version of Linux on my machine (nothing exotic: Edgy for work,
Feisty for testing), plus a couple fat/Windows partition.
Each Linux is on its own hard drive, with separate home and swap partition.

The problem is that it makes no sense to me, it is useless, for example, to see
the partitions of Edgy when I am using Feisty, and vice versa.
The problem is that Nautilus now shows partitions that I have NOT mounted,
hence that I do NOT want to see !
I tried right-clicking on them to select "remove" from the menu, but this
option is greyed out ! :-/
Seeing all these unwanted partitions sitting there in the side bar all the time
(with weird names on top of that), polluting the other partitions that I do
use, is annoying as hell. Looks really untidy, hurts usability, and induces a
horrible feeling of powerlessness when you realise you can't get rid of them :-/

Don't get me wrong...I think it's GREAT to have a GUI that shows all
unmounted partitions and lets you mount them easily. HOWEVER, such a GUI
should not be part of the main Nautilus window ! Mounting local hard
drive partitions is an administrative task, so it should have a GUI of
its own. In Dapper there used to be a nice little tool to do just that
("disk-admin" IIRC), which was great. Of course the GUI itself was buggy
and needed development, but the basic idea/concept was just fine I felt.
Having a GUI of its own would also allow to have more features for added
usability/user-friendlyness (allow to specify a mount point with a name
of OUR choice to start with, rather than being imposed a label
arbitrarily, as is the case at present.)

A work-around is to build gaim-encryption with libnss and libnspr from
Firefox.
