caused by the early version of the zd1211 driver in Ubuntu, and should

[Bug 77169] QT and Chinese characters

2006-12-26 Thread Didier Hoarau
Public bug reported:

There is a very annoying bug with QT when you are used to display chinese
characters : when a chinese character does not exists in a font, the character
is replaced by a dot.
The only way I have found to solve this is to configure myself the font
substitution : http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/kde-font-setup.html

I suppose it is a bug because GTK dont behave like this (it automatically do
the font mapping ?)
This is not an ubuntu-specific bug but it would be helpfull to make the font
mapping by default or when the chinese is installed.

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2006-12-26 Thread Allen Graham
Thanks to Tom Halligan for pointing out the article by Messrs Raymond and
Landley. The problem, to oversimplfy, is that articles such as that are so
inaccurate that it clouds the real problem, first off I've been using a 64
bit O/S for 2 full years. Ubuntu Linux was the only system that I could get
to work. True, the 64 bit system is not fleshed out, and Microsoft has made
mockery of it with their XP-64. Apple is not even in consideration.
"Throwing money" at the problem would be a drastic mistake. Most people that
use Ubuntu are willing to share and help, but as Tom pointed out the legal
problem, created by the U.S. Patent Office, aided and abetted by Microsoft,
is the real culprit.
As well people (like me) use Ubuntu on important (buzz=mission critical)
systems that can not tolerate failure. BUT, there is a learning curve to
Linux, a big one, and Ubuntu may be the easiest approach, but not for the
'feint of heart'.
Help us overcome the big nasty problem created by the "Patent Office", call
or inundate with email, your elected representative, get him/her/it onside.
The U.S. created the problem, but there are many more of us out here in the
real world.

[Bug 77166] Reports PEF files as TIFF

2006-12-26 Thread Martin Emrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libmagic1

file reports Pextax raw image files as TIFF images:

$ file *
IMGP3840.PEF: TIFF image data, big-endian

$ file -i *
IMGP3840.PEF: image/tiff

Of course, .PEF (and Nikon .NEF, and probably many other camera raw files) are
technically TIFF files.
But file (and libmagic behind it) should report them not as image/tiff, as most
apps using libmagic try to open
them with their TIFF backend/filter, but they fail because of the custom pixel
format.

[Bug 77054] Re: mouse clicks do not get through anymore

2006-12-26 Thread Stijn Hoop
As to why I think it's the notification popups, this is because after a
fresh install, after logging in you get an 'updates' notification right
away. Most of the time if I was quick I could click a menu before that
appeared and that click worked, however after the notification had
popped up sometimes I couldn't even dismiss it anymore.

As to the applications that I use, that's the strange thing: I didn't
customize anything at all. In fact I wiped ~/.gnome* and ~/.gconf* once
(without being logged into X) to make sure that it wasn't a setting
crash or something like that. This is a vanilla, totally nothing
customized, first time login amd64 Edgy. Strange that I'm the only one
seeing this :(

2006-12-26 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
#76804 mentioned a workaround in #76872; I tried that and it works! I
got DMA enabled in five consecutive boots, so it is probably fixed now.

So I guess you could mark both #76872 and #76911 as duplicates of
#76804, to simplify tracking of bug; thanks!

[Bug 77164] Intense processor activity when Amarok is maximized

2006-12-26 Thread Vlad Socaciu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

System monitor is showing 100% processor activity when Amarok runs
maximized, even thought the computer is pretty much idle and Amarok is
not playing any song.

I also noticed that when i cover Amarok with another maximized program,
for example Mozilla Firefox, the processor activity drops to 50% on
average. now, when i minimize Amarok to the tray, but keep Mozilla
maximized, the processor drops to 0%.

Another observation: when i shrink Amarok (drag the borders) to about
half the size of the desktop, processor activity also drops to about
50%.

i use compiz-freedesktop, version 0.3.5.git20061221-0gandalfn1 with Aiglx and
the original ubuntu edgy video driver.
i hope i posted this in the right place, because the synaptic package manager
shows me there is also another set of compiz packages (compiz 1:0.3.3) that
conflicts with what i have installed.

Re: [Bug 77146] Re: install - reading mirror crashes

2006-12-26 Thread João Miranda
Hi, how can i install Kubuntu now? Is there something i can do to install
it?
You said that the changes were in Ubuntu, but i have Ubuntu 6.10 working,
this problem only happens when i am installing Kubuntu 6.06.

Another thing, my mouse and keyboard are USB and both after some time stops,
they back to 'work' if i change the USB.
I have this problem in the Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
The problem occurs on Mandriva 2007 free too, i think its my hardware, any
idea?
It seems that the distributions are not prepared for new hardware (not so
new). Am i wrong ? I bought this PC recently.

Thank you for your bug. Is that with the gnome-applets batstat applet or
with the gnome-power-manager icon?

Andre,

Are you still able to reproduce this issue? I have not been able to
reproduce in 2.0.

1 Goto to tools->Add-on->themes
2 change theme from human to tango
3 restart firefox.

Are you getting a crash report of is the change just not appearing
correctly?

[Bug 75318] Re: wrong error message

2006-12-26 Thread Jonh Wendell
According with rar developers response, this isn't a bug. See:

Hello,

Perhaps you used a directory name without trailing slash
in the command. If you run:

rar x arc dir/

rar (or unrar, they have the same syntax) knows that 'dir'
is a directory and treats it as directory.

If you run:

rar x arc dir

then 'dir' may be both file name and directory name. So rar
checks presence of 'dir' and if it is exist, it treats
this parameter as directory. Otherwise rar treats it as
a file name to extract.

Just add the slash character to destination directory name
to avoid this ambiguity.

Eugene

So, i'm closing this bug.

[Bug 57454] Re: Firefox segfaults every time it is launched

2006-12-26 Thread David Farning
Andy,

Are you still able to reproduce this issue? If so, when it crashes does
it generate a crash report? Would you attach the crash report to this
bug?

Thanks
David

[Bug 77160] [UNMETDEPS] Failed deps, feisty

2006-12-26 Thread Vassilis Pandis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: twinkle

twinkle depends on libccrtp1-1.4-0 . libccrtp1-1.5-0 is in the repos so
presumably a rebuild will fix this. Twinkle cannot be rebuilt though
because it build-depends on libzrtpcpp-dev , which is not in the repos
but is in debian testing and unstable.

** Affects: twinkle (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed
