[Bug 79182] ipset is not useful in ubuntu, because kernel and iptables do not support it.

2007-01-13 Thread Stephen Thorne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ipset

Installing ipset allows you to interact with ipsets in a kernel that
supports ipsets. There are no kernels or modules installable via apt
that support ipsets.

If you download patch-o-matic-ng from the netfilter website, you can
patch iptables, kernel and ipset.

I have managed to build a kernel that supports ipsets. With this kernel
it is possible use the 'ipset' binary provided with the 'ipset' package
to add/remove/alter ipsets.

A patched iptables does not build the 'set' module, and I can't figure
out how to make it do that. It requires rebuilding iptables with sets
support. I get this error:

$ iptables -m set
iptables v1.3.6: Couldn't load match `set':/lib/iptables/libipt_set.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory

Without iptables supporting matching on sets, it is actually not
possible to use an ipset. As a result, it is basically impossible to
make this 'ipset' package useful in ubuntu.

I recommend adding a package that provides the kernel modules (ip_set_*)
to universe, and altering iptables to support sets.

You use revision id and file id interchangeably here but they aren't.
bzr's current repository is already able to store 'infinite' length
*revision ids*, but not *file ids*.

So my repo format allows indefinite length file ids ;). It needs a
little cleanup to be mergable, mainly in handling of collisions.

[Bug 79180] Setting up an ethernet bridge is painful

2007-01-13 Thread Robert Persson
Public bug reported:

This is an enhancement request.

The pain needs to be taken out of setting up an ethernet bridge.
Ethernet bridging is a very useful feature for users of laptops to
connect both to another machine and to a wider network through that same
machine. Currently not even internet connection sharing is implemented.
This puts Ubuntu, and Linux desktops generally, behind Windows and Mac
OS in this regard.

I managed to set up a bridge on a Gentoo box a few months ago, but it
was hard work for a novice. I completely failed to do it in Dapper
despite all my efforts. Ideally you should be able set up a bridge
through the gnome networking control panel as easily as you can
configure an ethernet port to use DHCP.

Beryl is installed correctly and totem-xine and xine are working

I think gstreamer doesn't work with beryl.
Does vlc use gstreamer or xine or another engine?

Anyway beryl is installed correctly, but still the vlc picture is black.
I think this also happened with totem-gstreamer,that's why I switched to
totem-xine.

Please reply to me.

2007-01-13 Thread Norbert Hoeller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: polipo

I installed and successfully tested the latest polipo from Universe.
After rebooting, polipo would not start - log file showed "Couldn't
create pid file /var/run/polipo/polipo.pid: Permission denied". I found
bug #40818 which added code to create /var/run/polipo. Only root has
permissions for this directory.

I noticed other directories in /var/run had permissions for non-root
users/groups, such as backuppc. Adding the line
 chown proxy:proxy /var/run/polipo
to /etc/init.d/polipo (after 'mkdir -p /var/run/polipo') appears to have solved
the problem.

[Bug 78804] Re: Modules load/unload system doesn't suffice

By request of Peter Whittaker, who asked me to also comment the
following here:

I have an HP laptop myself, where this is needed (but doesn't fix this
completely though, needs some more work here and there)
I do also need (both for suspend and hibernation) to unload the ipw3945
driver etc.

Anyway, there are lots of resources out there which state this clearly,
lots of people experience this:

http://people.solsys.ro/silviu/2006/11/17/hp-nx7400-linux-problems-solved/
http://diozaka.org/modules/nx6310.html

Generally speaking it's mostly an issue on HP notebooks (and some say
X60s thinkpads), is my understanding...

But there are more drivers known to cause problems on some systems and
unloading them is generally unharmful, so IMHO if either psmouse or
ipw3945 are loaded, they should be unloaded and reloaded upon resume.

instead of listserv. Everyone I know uses listserv which may be a term
from Outlook Express. Sorry for causing the confusion.

When trying to setup a contact list, I have been successful in making
short lists of 10 to 20 addresses where each is added individually or
perhaps several at a time but the list I am working on now has 660
people and when copying and pasting that many it does not seem to create
the whole list. Also, when creating the list it will show 4 of each
person's name only one of which has the email address. The others have
street addresses or no information about the person. There is only one
card for each person In the contact list. I created the list from an
Excel file which was converted to a .csv file and then imported to
Evolution to setup the contact list.

The steps to that I am following are:
Select evolution "contacts"
Select mailing list ( ie: Personal List or other created list)
Select "new > contact list
In contact list editor:
Type name for List name
Click on "Select"
In Contact list Editor
Click on an address and Ctrl A
Click on Add
Return to contact list editor:
Left click "add" and "ok"

I hope this helps to clarify the problem I encoutered.

Thanks,
Scotty Michaelsen

[Bug 79102] Re: same problems in Herd 2 as in Herd 1

2007-01-13 Thread Andrew Ash
Which, if any, of these bugs are regressions from Edgy?

1) Graphics corruption is usually related to hardware. Could you please
provide some information about your hardware?

2) There is currently a major bug in the partitioning, bug 76796, though
I think that bug may be related to automatic partitioning, and therefore
not relevant to you.

3) That seems to be a bug in gdm. Could you please check for another
bug to add information to at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bugs The black line may
be hardware again.

4) A screenshot would be very useful here. If you could please attach
one, that would be great. That would also help out for #3 too.

5) I'm not sure where to point you on this one.

6) There is currently massive breakage in the feisty repos because of
porting python 2.4->2.5 I wouldn't recommend upgrading until this
becomes less of a problem. You can monitor the situation at
irc.freenode.net #ubuntu+1 , specifically the channel message.

I'm sorry there hasn't been much improvement in this area for you. The
transition from herd 1 to herd 2 is more about getting the new features into
the repos than the bugfixing aspect of the release. Unfortunately, there are
just not enough developers to do both! Bug reports such as yours ARE valued,
so please continue filing them.

One thing that may get these fixed faster is to file each bug
individually. It's rather difficult to work with multibug reports such
as this one just because of the way bugtracking systems are set up.
Each bug is assigned a package it affects, and importance/status
information. But when there are multiple independent problems, it
becomes difficult to make use of these fields for the bug.

I would recommend that you check each of these bugs individually and
then file them separately. That would help the developers out
immensely. Thanks!

PS-please make sure to follow up on bugs once you file them. Check bug
67274! I would recommend registering your email address with launchpad
so you can be notified of updates to bugs.

[Bug 79166] Erratic cursor after vt-switching in Feisty

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

In Feisty my Synaptics touchpad that used to work flawlessly since Breezy, now

When I say erratic I mean completely jerky jittering of the cursor that moves

I managed to make an animated GIF recording of this. The frame rate is
low but you can see the jittering and jumps.

Sidenote: Gnome needs better keyboard nav. You cannot access all places
with only shortcuts. In Windows (sic!) I can reach the systray with
(admittedly convoluted) tabbing around.

[Bug 79160] Re: Ubuntu Dapper screen saver crashes X server

2007-01-13 Thread Matt England
Check out this latest forum post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2009622&postcount=11

This doesn't seem to narrow a root cause, though; I'd like to know more
than just "reload the driver."

Here's my speculation:

I suspect that newer 3D imaging software/drivers have issues with an
nvidia driver/hardware. I doubt it's a gnome-screensaver-specific
thing.

When I updated my Dapper install with _all_ the newest software,
problems arose. When I reloaded a fresh Dapper (6.06.1) install, things
worked again.

I have a 7600 GTS.

I realize I didn't answer all your Qs/requests; if you need more let me
know, although I'm getting distracted with other work.

Fresh install of Feisty Herd 2 on Dell 1705 laptop. Launching gnome-
app-install crashes prior to showing menu. First attempt had Firefox
running in the background, but further attempts were with no other apps
running. System rebooted twice, same results.

[Bug 72897] Re: Unable to install without format

2007-01-13 Thread Colin Watson
For the time being, it is absolutely necessary to format from the point
of view of supportability; we cannot support a mutant system that
started out as something else and then had Ubuntu's files just dropped
over the top of it without cleaning out what was there before. Perhaps
in the future we'll figure out a way to have ubiquity wipe out
everything but /home.

Sadly, creating a /home partition can't be the default either, because
that means you have to dump the decision of what relative partition
sizes to use onto the user, and considering that our partition resizing
tools really aren't smooth enough to be foisted on ordinary users who
make a mistake in this decision I do not believe that this is
appropriate.

[Bug 79164] More user-friendly menu entry

2007-01-13 Thread Matthew East
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The new gnome-control-center I find in the System menu is seriously
awesome, it makes it much more obvious how to change settings of the
computer. But I think the menu entry could be improved. As per HIG, you
don't need to know the name of the program you're running (e.g. Movie
Player, Archive Manager etc) - in this case the menu entry "GNOME
Control Center" might confuse users more than (for example) "Settings"
or "Control Center" might do.

Can anybody duplicate this without a 3d screensaver?

[Bug 79163] [feisty] can't wake from sleep on nx7010

2007-01-13 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-5-generic

On my Compaq nx7010 sleep/suspend-to-ram and hibernate-to-disk are
working ok in edgy, but it cannot wake up in feisty using linux-
image-2.6.20-5-generic. I've tried shutting down the network interfaces
and turning off gdm.

Booting in single user mode and running 'pmi action sleep' does not work
either.

When I press the power button the machine spins up and does seem to
access its disk, but the screen backlight does not come on. However, it
does still respond to Alt-Shift-Sysrq to reboot.

At minimum, the next format should not allow errors to result from
passing in overly-long or otherwise hostile ids. I'm ok with doing a
change that does only that, but it is not a priority for me at the
moment -- I would rather format changes also work on efficiency.
