[Bug 61381] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashes at login

2007-03-06 Thread kuscsik
In my case it seems to be a network settings problem.

in my /etc/network/interfaces the lo device is configured as:

auto lo

after system startup the lo device is not alive. Starting gnome gives the well
known white box in the left bottom corner.
After

  sudo ifconfig lo up

in the base terminal gnome starting up without any problem.

Yea, I also get same problem, when tried to install with ubiquity from latest
Ubuntu Feisty (Herd5), backported to Edgy on HP Pavilion dv6103eu with
preinstalled OEM Windows XP
This is very often problem with preinstalled Windows, as when you turn on the
computer, then Windows OEM configurator starts automatically and there are no
way to quit it (or shutdown the computer), except of pressing power button...

So, ubiquity should display an simple and exact error message, where is
explained why Windows disk can't be resized and how to solve this
problem, for example:

Your NTFS partition journal is unclean, probably because of improper shutdown
of Windows OS. Please shutdown Windows OS properly before trying to resize NTFS
partitions!
Also you can run 'chkdsk DRIVE_LETTER' command from installed Windows OS or
from Windows installation CD to fix NTFS partition.
Note, if you have run chkdsk previously then boot Windows again (or start
chkdsk from Windows installation CD) which will automatically initialize the
journal correctly.

I'm attaching gzipped /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman, but they
have the same error like in previously pasted by dipres:

NTFS journal file is unclean. Please shutdown Windows properly before
using this software! Note, if you have run chkdsk previously then boot
Windows again which will automatically initialize the journal correctly.

[Bug 90318] Windows workgroups unusable when in Korean

2007-03-06 Thread Daengbo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-cups-manager

I recently moved to Korea and am attempting to print to a network
printer. Gnome-cups-manager reports only a few of the computers on the
network. Some of the workgroup names and many of the computer names are
in Korean. The non-ASCII names are not reported. This represents no
problem to the Windows computers, who can communicate among the Korean
workgroups well, but keeps me from using any network access for them. I
suspect this problem would occur in other non-ASCII environments like
Thai or Chinese.

Originally using Edgy in Xubuntu, I installed ubuntu-desktop (and Gnome)
to see if the problem lay with XFCE. Further exploration with findsmb
and smbclient on the command line showed similar problems, so I suspect
the issue goes quite deep into a library I wouldn't know about.

Non-ASCII workgroups and hostnames are common in Windows environments in
Asia. Ubuntu should be able to handle them.

[Bug 90311] non default keyboard layout on login

2007-03-06 Thread Elias K Gardner
Public bug reported:

Installed Ubuntu with US as region and Keyboard set as U.S. English. I
have since switched to Dvorak as default with no problems except that
the login screen upon startup is still U.S English (QWERTY) and there is
no method for selecting keyboard or layout on login screen. Original
install was Breezy, have since upgraded twice and am running edgy
without a clean install. Dvorak was set as default only after the edgy
upgrade. Dvorak keyboard works fine everywhere after login. Is this
simply a problem of not having done a clean install or an actual bug?
There seems to be some duplicates but all are old and I think un-

2007-03-06 Thread Tomcat
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 82335 ***

I started having the same problem after I was prompted for a
distribution upgrade by update manager. I have an always on broadband
connection and Evolution was working fine till the upgrade.

Uninstalling Network manager sorted out the problem. Thanks.

[Bug 90310] Firefox crashes after updating any extension

2007-03-06 Thread modani
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

If there are new Versions of firefox or any installed extension, the update
will be installed.
After the complete installation firefox has to restart, but the restart does
not work, because firefox crashes.

When I start firefox again the updates are installed and there is no error.
Why I have to restart twice?

[Bug 87440] Re: Desktop freeze when right clicking on a flash with Firefox

2007-03-06 Thread Ruben
Something similar happens to me, I am watching a video at
www.youtube.com and before the video ends, I click to see another or I
go back to the previous page and then Firefox freezes. It seems it
starts loading the next page and almost at the end it gets "stuck". If I
wait for the video to finish, it works fine.

I am using Feisty Fawn herd 5, x386 (32bit), with an AMD64 system, Adobe
Flash Player 9. I do not have any reports in /var/crash/ after or before
the crash. I am new to Ubuntu so could you tell me how I see the version
of the packages?

[Bug 90303] High pitched noise from one channel when playing sounds

2007-03-06 Thread mitchej123
Public bug reported:

First of all, here's the problem. When playing any sound I only get
good sound from one channel, the other channel plays but emits a loud
high pitched buzzing/squealing sound the entire time the sound card is
being used (and for a few seconds afterwards).

I'm running on an amd64 and started out with edgy amd64 and had the
problem there. I decided I wanted some newer packages (and hoped maybe
the problem had been fixed) so I upgraded and I'm now running Feisty
amd64 yet the problem persisted. Thinking it might be a amd64 related
problem I booted to a livecd of edgy i386 yet had the same problem.

Poking around on google I found someone else who had a similar problem
and their fix seems to be working for me (haven't had any time to test
it extensively) for the moment.

Their solution was to add this line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
"options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=3stack position_fix=0 single_cmd=0"

I'm not sure which option is fixing it, but now sound plays properly
from both channels and no high pitch squealing sound. As I said, I'm
running Feisty right now with a 2.6.20-9 kernel for x86_64. I don't
know if this fix works for edgy (but I would assume it might).

Unfortunately, Ubuntu Ultimate is not supported by Ubuntu, since it's
not actually from Ubuntu. Please get support from whomever it is that
made Ubuntu Ultimate.

P.S. it looks like you don't have enough disk space to install.

Re: [Bug 90271] Re: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe

2007-03-06 Thread Totempole
Hi Mark,

By "hangs" I mean it just sits there being totally unresponsive to any input
(keyboard etc). The only way to get around this is to hold the power button
to do a forced power off.

BTW, the place where it gets stuck is when it tries to load to the Realtek
8139cp module then tries to load the 8139too module. Right after it loads
the 8139too module it completely freezes.

This does not happen on on Ubuntu 5.10 but anything after that does not
work. So to install Ubuntu 6.10, I have to install 5.10 then upgrade
to 6.04then
6.10. All the while, using the same kernel from 5.10.

If I want to use any later kernel versions I have to blacklist these modules
(8139cp & 8139too) to prevent them from being loaded on bootup. But this is
kind of useless since I need an internet connection to do anything
meaningful.

This issue is common around the net as I did some research and lots of
people are running into this problem where they cannot even run the Live CD
of any ubuntu version after 5.10.

I hope this answers your question. I cannot provide a log of this since the
machine freezes completely. If you need anything else let me know as I'd
like to see this fixed in Feisty before its released. Or else I will be
stuck in Windows hell, esp. Vista hell since that is what this machine comes
pre-loaded with.

Regards,
Nik

[Bug 74584] Re: Update GParted to GParted 0.3.3

2007-03-06 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
It seems this bug is a duplicate of bug #81185

Please update GParted ASAP. As Graphical installer (ubiquity) doesn't
use GParted anymore, it's pretty safe to update GParted to new upstream
version even if we now are in upstream version freeze.

According to one email, sent to debbug #389510 by Magnus Holmgren
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> gparted "it seems to build fine without
modification to ./debian/*."

Updating gparted to new version (released on 2006-09-04) will fix lots
of important (dataloss) bugs, look at the release notes
(http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=444805&group_id=115843
,
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=446553&group_id=115843

,
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?group_id=115843&release_id=469155),
also bugs like #54119, #37768, #86851

Btw, you should patch upstream solution of bug #37768, because it's sort
of "dirty hack" (look at
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324220#c38 for more info):

Comment #36 from A. Murat Eren (points: 0)

I'd like to add some extra information. [When Gparted starts it creates]
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/gparted-disable-automount.fdi file, [which] causes
some problems as you suspected before. Sometimes it remains there even GParted
is not running anymore. Because of this file, HAL doesn't automount USB devices
properly.

There are similar bug reports in both Fedora's and Pardus's bug tracking
systems (I know there is a FIXME in the code, I just wanted to imply
that it really needs to be fixed ;)).

[Bug 77943] Re: blacklist hosts after 3 wrong password

2007-03-06 Thread Albert Bicchi
I am running Ubuntu server edition and was surprised to see so many
attacks on my /var/log/auth.log*

# zcat /var/log/auth.log.* | grep Failed | less

I think if Ubuntu wants to push the server to the next level it must
ensure security, reliability and speed. Is there a reason why and IP
blocker tool is not integrated with the sshd daemon?

Should I open a feature request and propose this on Feisty+1 or do you
think that this is something that the sysadmin should configure
him/herself if needed?

We could use the fail2ban tool suggested above but these are other tools
that seem to do a similar job. Unfortunately we do not have packages for
any of them:

[Bug 90299] when desktop-effects enabled, apps requiring sudo permissions not showingup correctly

2007-03-06 Thread Viswanath
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

This is an up-to-date fiesty system, including the compiz-extras.
But I am seeing this issue for a while now.

when I enable desktop-effects, all normal apps work fine. but
applications requiring to enter password (synaptic / login manager etc)
behave strangely.

1. The password prompt app (gksudo ?) has the password textbox with junk
password. You don't see echos (with * or filled circle) of the
characters. The textbox stays blank. But if I click on OK, the
application comesup fine on entering correct password.

2. The progressbars don't indicate status correctly. It stays at 0%,
even though actual processing is going on. The window just closes after
everything is done. For example synaptic reload from repos, just shows
0% complete till the end.

3. The administration menu (after preferences) doen't highlight entries
where I kept mouse pointer. Popups showup describing the app, however.
This is not the case for preferences menu however, highlighting works
however.

some problems as you suspected before.

Btw, you should patch upstream solution of this bug, because it's sort
of "dirty hack" (look at
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324220#c38 for more info):

[Bug 90009] Re: No menu bar item for copying selected text

2007-03-06 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
gdebi already has a single-item menu: the Help menu. Various other
single-item menus are found in many other Gnome applications, including
Calculator, Character Map, the Device Manager, and the Gnome games.
There is nothing wrong with a menu having one item, if that is the only
appropriate item for that menu. That gdebi is not a text editing
application doesn't matter: neither are Rhythmbox, Nautilus, or
Inkscape, but they all have Edit menus with Copy items.

Alerts don't have Edit menus (in Gnome, at least) only because Gnome
uses in-window menu bars, so giving alerts menu bars would add clutter.
But gdebi already has a menu bar, so providing an Edit menu would barely
add any clutter, and it would make the existence of the Copy function
much more discoverable. Thanks!

[Bug 54119] Re: Edgy Installer: Partitioning Tool cannot enlarge logical ntfs partitions to the left

2007-03-06 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
I can confirm this bug.

It seems this bug would be fixed simply to upgrading to new gparted
0.3.x upstream version (look at bug #81185 ), released on 2006-09-04,
look at the release notes
(http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=444805&group_id=115843

This release includes one of the most exiting features since the first release;
We finally have full move support!! Although it should be considered a bit
experimental, our tests worked out perfectly and we didn't see any errors so
far.

Special thanks for this release go to:
JanC, for the initial idea on how to implement moving.
Brother Larry, for the enormous amount of time he put into testing and
bughunting.

New Features:
* it is now possible to move the start of filesystems.
* much improved progressfeedback during move and copy
* you can now move and copy ntfs filesystems and still boot windows from them
* overall improved progressfeedback (more details you don't want to know about
;) )

Translations (new/updated):
ja, es, vi, gl, nl, de, sv, lt, lv, hu, fi, fr, mk

Changes:
* mostly internal, far more exact calculations of partition geometry
* dependencies raised for libparted (now 1.7.1) and gtkmm (now 2.8)
* some trivial HIG stuff..
* due to cleanups the resulting binary is about 15% smaller

Bugfixes:
* automountdisabling should work ok now
* fixed some errors with scanning for used sectors on ntfs filesystems
* other small stuff i can't remember :)

[Bug 33827] Re: HP nw8240 suspend to RAM works only after lid close/open

2007-03-06 Thread Matt Weller
I am having these same issues while running Feisty. I tested with a
fresh Edgy install and suspend worked nicely. I then wiped the system
clean and installed Feisty and suspend does not work for me. HP nw8240
just as stated above. I have tried by closing lid and manually putting
it into suspend mode with the same end result... a black screen upon
trying to resume. I have tested with x.org provided ati driver and with
fgrlx (both from repos and directly from ATI website).

[Bug 86851] Re: 7.04 Feisty Herd5: gparted: constantly mounting partitions

2007-03-06 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
I can confirm this critical and very annoying bug.

It seems this problem started to be visible after gnome-mount was be
integrated into Ubuntu (also can be caused because of hal/libhal
changes, related to gnome-mount)

This problem also occurs with Edgy's gparted if you install backported
hal+libhal+gnome-mount packages from Feisty.

It seems this bug would be fixed simply to upgrading to new gparted
0.3.x upstream version (look at bug #81185 ):

In GParted-0.3 release notes (2006-09-04, see
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=444805&group_id=115843
) there is a note, that "automountdisabling should work ok now" :

We finally have full move support!! Although it should be considered a

Bugfixes:
