[Bug 107633] Dell Inspiron 8200 freezes after ~5 mins of work

2007-04-18 Thread Uri Sharf
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

I've upgraded last night. My Dell Inspiron 8200 boots perfectly.
I had nvidia-glx installed, and after the upgrade got a black screen. Installed
nvidia-glx-legacy.
After booting, the desktop is not responsive after ~5 mins of working with the
brwoser mainly, and I need to cold boot.
Restarting with pci=noapic seems to help.

1. Upgrade from Edgy with update-manager -d
2. Enable nvidia-glx-legacy

[Bug 88400] Re: [Feisty] Sound card (HDA) no more detected after switching from -8 to -9

2007-04-18 Thread kurti
There are different ways:

1. run "alsamixer" and look in the upper left corner

│ Card: HDA Intel
│ Chip: Realtek ALC861

2. cat /proc/asound/Intel/codec#0
Codec: Realtek ALC861

I guess there are more "official" ways, but this worked for me.

you are using a third party addon which we can do anything about it.

I just observed that while switching to clearlooks solved my horizontal
progress bars, it broke my vertical ones (like the one used in the
volume control) which worked fine before now (meaning that the portion
under the slider was colored), however they don't any more. This is not
such a big problem since the slider button itself can give visual
feedback on the position, but I thought that I should mention it.

[Bug 90646] Re: firehol does not work with bash 3.2 (which is default in feisty)

2007-04-18 Thread corpus
Sadly, I don't think we will be seeing a fix for this anytime soon.
Firehol's project page has not been updated since Jan. 30, 2005 so I
don't think it's been currently maintained. Too bad since it was the
friendliest iptables front end that didn't limit you to a simple 2
interface setup.

I have switched over to shorewall, but I miss the simplicity of
firehol's syntax.

[Bug 107625] python-f2py should depend on python-dev

2007-04-18 Thread frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-f2py

The header file Python.h is required for f2py to process the hello world
program found at: http://cens.ioc.ee/projects/f2py2e/#usage . I presume
that it would be required for many (any?) other use(s) of f2py.

Python.h lives in the python-dev package.

Hence, the python-f2py package should depend on the python-dev package.

[Bug 103378] Re: impossible mount floppy device in /media

2007-04-18 Thread JJ
Just adding: maybe placing it on /usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings
/kde-profile/default/share/apps/systemview/media.desktop instead of
/usr/share/apps/systemview/media.desktop could be used as an alternative
(not tested) if it's desirable either to keep it in kubuntu-default-

[Bug 95968] Re: ifup fails to bring up alias interfaces like eth0:10

2007-04-18 Thread Fabio Massimo Di Nitto
The problem is that network will still attempt to manage eth0 blantly
ignoring that when taking down the primary interface, all the slaves
like eth0:10 will go down too.

If you look at the backend code, you will see that network manager will
register the interfaces in its list, but does not know how to manage
them properly because to bring up eth0:10 you need to have eth0 up
first. So they need a special ordering to be handled properly.

Try this:

ifconfig eth0 1.1.1.1 up
ifconfig eth0:10 2.2.2.2
ifconfig eth0 down

you will see that eth0:10 is down too.

network manager does reset all the interfaces to initizialize but
doesn't bring back eth0:10. this is hardly an ifupdown bug. This
behavior is well known and n-m simply doesn't know how to cope with it.

[Bug 103378] Re: impossible mount floppy device in /media

2007-04-18 Thread JJ
I used to have the same problem. So that I stopped using System Menu > Storage
Media (which today's default is to point to /media) for read floppy disks, pen
drives (they were using to left some of the folders in which they're mounted
listed in /media) or any other storage media. Instead, I was launching System
Menu > Home Folder and, by choosing Services side button in the then opened
konqueror window, I selected in its tree, Storage Media (this one points to
media:/). As you can see, it's a long way to get there!
So, I just copied /usr/share/apps/systemview/media.desktop to
~/.kde/share/apps/systemview/media.desktop (I created systemview folder there)
and edited it from Path=/media to Path=media:/
Now, my System Menu > Storage Media points to media:/ and it is just neat!
So, I second the asking for considering it on feisty and even attach here my
edited media.desktop file to make it even easier/faster to replace
/usr/share/apps/systemview one in time for the release ;-)
Thanks in advance.

[Bug 105490] Re: [Feisty] Swap partition receives new UUID

2007-04-18 Thread tactus
Update: After rebooting with the above /etc/fstab settings my swap is
once again gone (as expected).

$ free | grep Swap
Swap:0 0 0

$ sudo vol_id /dev/sda2 | grep UUID
ID_FS_UUID=c45a7273-5fe4-4150-9d62-c099d121299e

What happened prior my post above I tried to hibernate from the gnome
power manager applet in system tray (xfce). It seemed to work okay, but
when turning on the computer it just booted up normally and didn't
restore from hibernate state.

Hope this information can be useful.

[Bug 67443] Re: Progress bar is invisible

2007-04-18 Thread Cd-MaN
Modifying the engine also worked for me. I also tried to play with the
setting "progressbarstyle" when the engine was ubuntulooks, but it had
no effect. Two more things: the engine switching is a much better
solution for me than reducing color depth because rdesktop kept crashing
at 16 bit color depth and it is engine "ubuntulooks", not engine
ubuntulooks (this might be useful for the people searching through the
file).

[Bug 107621] Re: 6.06 LTS Installer crashed on MacBook Pro

2007-04-18 Thread GNUdental
I'm sure that the crash has something to do with the fact that the new
Intel-based Macs use the EFI/GPT partition scheme rather than the older
MBR scheme, but IMO, the Installer should give me the option of not
using a boot loader. I looked for such an option but saw nothing. And
even if it doesn't give me the option, it shouldn't crash. It should
gracefully exit. Not everyone wants to use grub (it was in the midst of
installing grub to hd0 it said, when it crashed) or any boot loader for
that matter.

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-04-18 Thread cctvpro
I also have this experience.

As a business user, making extensive use of skype for international
business, I must say that Ubuntu has now proven incapable of handling my
demands. version 6.10 was fine and the microphone worked with skype.
After updating to 7.04 this is no longer the case.

Going into the sound setting application from the panel, my microphone
is set and not muted. But there is no recording. I can hear myself
through the PC speakers, but cannot record.

The problem just appeared - probably some upgrade.

I started at the top of this page and tried each solution listed,
without success.

I stopped somewhere halfway down the page. Who wants to spend a few
weeks trying out a bunch of peoples imagined solutions. It would be nice
if someone actually researched what the problem is and fixed it.

I have to now reconsider a return to microsoft - wow. Free is not better
in this case.

[Bug 104432] Re: Glipper makes copy/pasting of images in OpenOffice impossible

2007-04-18 Thread Wayne Davison
This bug is caused by some incorrect logic when the checkClipboard()
function calls the processContent() function (both in src/main.c). If
the call to gtk_clipboard_wait_for_text() returned a NULL (because the
clipboard item could not be changed into plain text), the NULL gets
passed to processContent(), and that function resets the clipboard to
the last-known text item, obliterating all non-text clipboard items as
quickly as they are found.

I'll report this item upstream. In the meantime, if a quick fix is
desired, the processContent() function could be changed to ignore a NULL
newContent arg. That would cause Glipper to ignore all non-text items,
with the only downside being that the drop-down menu would show the
last-known plain-text item as being current even though no plain-text is
available to paste (but that's better than the current behavior).

[Bug 107616] Poor security defaults

Public bug reported:

Security by default in ubuntu is not up to scratch at all, I understand
that iptables in the kernel does the job but it's not acceptable and
very basic for this day and age.

Please can we have Firestarter (frontend) installed by default or ICMP
filtering enabled in iptables and or Firestarter. Even Windows XP SP2
has better default firewall security than Ubuntu and the fact that a
cracker can ping your machine to get a response to say something is
there is not good. We should not make the mistake (like Windows) with
security defaults, just because we are low on the radar of crackers dont
mean we can step back, after all thats what SELinux are in the kernel

Gaim 2.0.0beta6 under Feisty Fawn RC 20070415.

I can partialy confirm this. using MSN protocol. After changing the
default formating, under Tools / Preferences / Conversations , the
change was not applied instantly - I needed to close the chat windows
and reopen it. After that, the change was noticed by me and the other
peer.

Changing underline, bold, color etc in chat window produced immediate
effects both for me and the other peer. However, changing font was only
apparent to me (maybe because the other peer was using Windows?).

2007-04-18 Thread Scott Sweeny
It doesn't crash for me on feisty with monodevelop 0.12+dfsg-1ubuntu1.
Just the import error as expected from only having the sln file and no
actual project.

Hi, which text plugin are you referring to? Not too sure.

[Bug 95588] Re: X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 167

2007-04-18 Thread Kevin
Daniel,

Not at this time. My linux system is down due to another issue (it keeps
"losing" my second hard disk with /home on it). But I have seen it many
times. I also tried the fix described above, and that worked. I am
expecting to have to redo my system, so I am waiting for the final
Feisty release before I reload the OS and programs. I don't know if it
will still be there or not.

Regards,

Kevin

are usable there. These are mostly large icons, and I have not resized
