Aha! now that's the confirmation I've been waiting for. I retract my previous comment then. But the thing is, I can copy any files from any CDs... except files from a Video CD.
[Bug 114562] LiveCD Safe Graphics Mode fails IBM X41 Tablet
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Using the LiveCD for Ubuntu Feisty 7.04, the "Safe Graphics Mode" consistently results in a 800x600 screen that has about a corrupt 1 inch band on the right side. I happened on to this by accident. I chose "Safe Graphics Mode" simply because I was actually looking for a text-mode installer (which I guess does not exist except on server versions). I have no problems with the regular LiveCD mode of "Start or Install Ubuntu" which is a perfect 1024x768 (correct for this X41 Tablet). I sent Hardware Inventories in both the "Safe Graphics Mode" (broken) and "Start or Install Ubuntu" (working). I dug up the submission IDs from the Hardware Inventory application as well as, xorg.conf, /var/log/messages, /var/log/xorg.0.log, lspci, /var/log/gdm/:0.log in both broken and working modes and I'll attach them as soon as I figure out how. :-) ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- LiveCD Safe Graphics Mode fails IBM X41 Tablet https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114562 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 109211] Re: feisty doesn't work with external CD writers anymore
I am afraid I am having the same problem with a Sony Spressa USB CD-R/CD-RW drive. I get the exact same output as above. I remember being able to record with this drive on ubuntu for as long as I can remember (breezy maybe? or maybe even hoary...) Also, since I have to disk drives (the previously described CDR/RW and a CDRom drive), I tried putting one of my ubuntu cds in the drives to see what happens. The CD mounts in the CDRom drive, but fails to do so in the external drive. I don't know if that is also happening to Wenzhuo Zhang, since he did not say... BTW,What do you mean when you say it's a linux bug, Sebastien? If I load one of my previous kernels with grub (say, one that was with edgy), will it work - I know the dangers of working with old kernels, but I NEED this to work... -- feisty doesn't work with external CD writers anymore https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109211 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 89120] Re: VPN Connection not added...
I'd like to confirm this bug. I've tried many times to configure a VPN through this "wizard" supplied by network-manager-gnome, but it always disappears when you return to the "VPN Connections" window. I am running Kubuntu Feisty with network-manager, network-manager-gnome, and network-manager-pptp all loaded and at their most recent versions as of this writing (2007-05-13). Another odd fact is that in the "Create VPN Connection - 2 of 2" window, "Requires existing network connection" is always greyed out, and the "Type" selector is blank until you pick something (in my case " Windows VPN" - note leading space character). At the end, in the "finish creating" window, there is often nothing listed unless I go back through the windows again, re-select " Windows VPN" and undo a bunch of wrong settings that have suddenly appeared. In no case does whatever I've configured end up listed in the VPN Connections window. Presently I'm using kvpnc, because it actually works for me, but I had to go out and find it via "Google". The method of configuring VPN supplied by default in Feisty really needs to be functional. -- VPN Connection not added... https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/89120 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 114556] possible xorg memory leak
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg it can be a duplicate but I couldn't find the plain answer on the forums and in the Google. I have i965Q integrated graphics controller that uses i810 driver. Also I'm running beryl from the Feisty repos. Everything works smoothly but memory used by Xorg keeps to be increasing all the time. At the moment my PC was turned on since yesterday; yesterday the memory amount used by Xorg was about 85-130 Mb, at the moment it's 233.1 Mb and becomes more and more. I tried to exit all applications that were running since yesterday (the were some tray apps like sim-im and skype), reloaded Beryl and Emerald but the value of the memory used by Xorg became even more after that. Is it driver/xorg/beryl/something-else issue and how can I find what caused this terrible memory leak? At the home I have Nvidia 7600GS video card and even after a weeks of uptime xorg used ~30mb and that value didn't changed over the time (I don't know if Xorg's memory includes video card memory or not though) Btw, it's 233.3Mb now after I've written this post Don't know what to do since I don't want to turn my PC every evening.. [Bug 114552] Digikam hangs with Progress Dialog when deleting files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: digikam When Ubuntu Feisty came out, I did a clean install (the Gnome based version) and then installed digikam from the ubuntu repository. Basically, when I delete a picture (either by hitting the delete key or right clicking the picture and choosing to move it to trash), The delete Progress Dialog just hangs there for a long time and the photo doesn't delete. After a while I close the dialog box. Sometime the picture then deletes, and other times the picture does not delete. If the picture does delete, I am then able to delete further pictures without a problem. I don't think this happens 100% of the time, but it happens most of the time. I don't know if this is a settings issue or something else. This bug does not appear to be Ubuntu-specific. I set up the same test rig with Debian 4.0, running kernel 2.6.18, and the performance was acceptable. When I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.20, performance suffered in a similar way as with the Ubuntu 7.04 setup. Disk write performance under 2.6.20 may be slightly faster when no other processes are running, on some boxes. But as soon as the box becomes loaded up, performance degrades much more quickly with 2.6.20 than with 2.6.18 or earlier kernels. [Bug 49974] Re: libgtk etc is needed for SCIM to work in Kubuntu
Fixing this bug requires re-split the binary packages for scim. Previous versions of scim tried to solve this by putting /usr/lib /libscim-gtkutils-1.0.so.8.* into scim-gtk2-immodule package, which in my opinion is not a good move, and caused more problems than it solved. The worst is, only picking out /usr/lib/libscim-gtkutisl-1.0.so.8.* doesn't remove the GTK dependency of skim, as skim still needs the /usr/lib/scim-1.0/scim-laucher program (probably and others) in the scim package to work properly. So to fix this, one must figure out which part of scim is used by skim, and put them into separate binary packages, and skim can only depends on those packages instead of scim and libscim8c2a, which both depend on GTK now. I'm offering to mentor fixing this bug. If anyone is interested and know the KDE stuff (as I don't know about KDE at all, I can answer the scim-related questions but not the KDE-related or skim-related ones), welcome to have a look. -- libgtk etc is needed for SCIM to work in Kubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/49974 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2246] Re: scim-gtk2-immodule will cause apps linked to libstdc++ 5 to crash
This bug is not fixed. Never has been, and not likely going to be fixed in the near future. The real reason of this bug is that binaries compiled by g++ is exposing weak symbols that it's not supposed to expose. I heard that since the fix requires an ABI change in libstdc++, it won't get fixed until libstdc++7 is released. [Bug 82307] Re: Can't copy VCD ".dat" files from CD to Hard Drive
That's because the files you see when you mount a VCD are not really the files that the players play. They read data from the CD in a raw format. [Bug 84603] Re: Hard disk I/O randomly freezes when hald is running and optical drive is empty
I just upgraded from edgy to feisty and with the kernel at 2.6.20 I still get this problem, even with a cd in the cdrom drive. The drive that hangs up is my second hard disk drive which is an ata drive with a sil based sata to ide converter SYBA SD-SATA-IDE, which has been working fine in edgy. The first drive is a native sata drive and seems to work fine. If I boot with my previous (edgy) kernel 2.6.17-11-generic it all works fine, as it did under Edgy. Even though my dvd drive is a TssTcorp, but not the one mentioned above, I believe this bug is in the kernel, and is quite serious. Although it is odd that if I boot in single user mode, the drive does not give these errors, so it could be something in hald or another daemon (maybe smartd?) is interacting? I even installed the latest stable kernel too 2.6.21.1 and get the same error. For now I'll continue to use the edgy kernel, as it seems quite stable. It looks like there are two specific problemes, actually: applications hanging up when scim is the IM, and problems when converting from kana to kanji, specific to scim-anthy. First, I removed all the settings related to IM from my .xsession and my bashrc, to test it on a per application basis. When I do: GTK_IM_MODULE=xim mozilla-thunderbird then it launches correctly. If I replace xim by scim in the above command, it does not work anymore. scim is effectively launched, since I get: Launching a SCIM daemon with Socket FrontEnd... Loading simple Config module ... Creating backend ... Loading socket FrontEnd module ... Starting SCIM as daemon ... GTK Panel of SCIM 1.4.4 But it hangs here, apparently doing nothing (no cpu is taken by the process). This is the same whatever application using gtk I launch. Something which may be of some interest is that when I launches an application with GTK_IM_MODULE set to scim under strace, it always hangs at the following call: connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/tmp/scim-socket-frontend-david"}, Sometimes, it does launch, but when I try to input some japanese, it hangs up again (on the same call if I run the application under strace). I don't know if this is related, but as this cause many problems for other softwares: I have my home on a NFS share, Cheers, David -- scim-anthy does not work and make any application which uses it hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107391 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Confirming this for my Feisty on a Thinkpad Z61m. I didn't find a pattern yet, but it crashes often! The launchpad bugreport tool is never started for this bug.. thats why i only report it now. [Bug 107115] Re: log out or switch user results in crash
I have this with a new Kubuntu Feisty install with an ATI Mobility Radeon X300, 2.6.20-15-generic. I installed the latest ATI 8.36.5 with a manual build. I do not have beryl installed. Logging off a session (except a full restart), suspend, and hibernate are affected. I seem to be able to start a new session and switch users okay, so long as I don't log any of them off. During one log off black-out, I saw the following on one of the screens, in case it helps... [1757.404000] [fglrx:firegl_mmap] *ERROR* No map found! [1757.404000] [fglrx:firegl_unlock] *ERROR* Process 5907 using kernel context 0 One other oddity in case it's related. If I start a new session, the second one goes onto vt9 instead of vt8. vt8 shows console text: * Checking battery state...
