[Bug 123469] Re: Incorrect License warning?
Answering my own bug report: This from Sun at http://www.sun.com/software/linux/faq.xml Q: Isn't JDK 6 in Ubuntu 7.04 based on the DLJ license that Mark Shuttleworth and Jonathan Schwartz announced at JavaOne last year? A: Yes. Last year Sun created the Distribution License for Java (DLJ) which made it possible for GNU/Linux and OpenSolaris distributions to package and redistribute Sun's implementation of the Java SE Platform. The latest release of the Java SE 6 JDK, was released in December 2006 and Canonical has taken advantage of the DLJ to package JDK 6 for Ubuntu 7.04. A new addition to JDK 6 is Java DB, which is available as an optional add-on package. Back to top 9. Q: Why isn't Canonical including OpenJDK in Ubuntu 7.04? A: Last November Sun announced the plan to open source our Java SE implementation under the GPL. At that time major components of the platform including the Java programming language compiler and the HotSpot virtual machine source code were published as part of the OpenJDK project. As previously communicated, Sun plans to make a completely buildable implementation of OpenJDK during the first half of 2007. However as the full JDK was not available in time for inclusion in the 7.04 release the timing did not allow including OpenJDK. Sun and Canonical are working together on packaging OpenJDK such that an open source implementation of the Java SE Platform can be included in the next Ubuntu release. So, to answer my own questions: - JDK6 and OpenJDK are not the same. - JDK6 is licensed under the DLJ - OpenJDK is licensed under the GPL v2 - OpenJDK didn't quite make it to the 7.04 release However, here's another question that I couldn't find an answer to: There appears to be no openjdk package in Gutsy as yet. [Bug 113201] Re: firefox spends lots of time hung
Scratch the flash theory - I have found the definitive cause. It occurs if you are using a proxy server. If the proxy server takes a long time to respond to a request then firefox completely hangs. For example right now my ISP is dead (I am using neighbour's wireless to send this). So my internal proxy server takes several minutes to respond to a request as it does dns lookups that ultimately fail and then an error message is returned. The entire firefox interface freezes while waiting on the proxy. For example I had about 10 tabs open and killed firefox. I then told it to restore my session and it took about 5 minutes before the window even appeared. Each tab was blank and clicking had no effect. It then took about another 5 minutes before tabs slowly started filling with the error content from the proxy server. I still couldn't interact with firefox. I then changed the config to use direct connections and killed/restarted the browser. Firefox still tried and failed to contact the sites, but I could at least use the interface and jump amongst the tabs. The evidence points to the firefox UI hanging whenever waiting on a proxy connection. -- firefox spends lots of time hung https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/113201 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 123474] aterm package doesn't work in feisty 7.04
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: aterm After installing Ubuntu Feisty one of the first things I did was download the aterm package through the synaptic package manager (1.0.0-4). After the installation aterm would run briefly, but after a few keystrokes it would crash. Also errors of the following sort would spew out: aterm has encountered the following problem interacting with X Windows : Request: 64, Error: 8(BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)) in resource: 0x2C0001B After removing the application from the package manager I downloaded the source 1.0.0-5 and compiled it, and that worked fine. [Bug 123473] Firefox video double plays frequently after starting maximum window size
Public bug reported: Firefox playing google video sometimes starts to play the smaller window after a bit when you leave it around while playing the maximum window. This is intermittent, but it doesn't appear to be movie dependent. It could also be a problem just with Google, but it doesn't seem likely. Steps include: 1. Using the standard firefox on Gutsy (looks like 2.0.0.4) go to the Google video site and pull up a full length video that plays for more than a few minutes. 2. Evoke the video. 3. Some time after the expansion button becomes available to make the video full screen, hit it. I've done this mostly by hitting the tile rather than the pulldown. 4. Once the video has come up full screen, without touching any functional buttons there, check back with the smaller screen window, which should still be there. Most of the time it will in fact just have a label saying the video is being played on a larger window. Reproduction circumstances I've seen include: a. Just waiting awhile, and then the video will begin to play on the smaller windows. b. Sometimes going back and forth between the windows a few times, again without touching anything functional, seems to cause the video to begin on the smaller window. This is especially true if the video has been playing for awhile. c. It seems that the longer you play a video on a maximum window with the original still there, the more likely it will be to start the same video simultaneously for some reason on the smaller window too, usually subsequent to some window access by the mouse. ** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Firefox video double plays frequently after starting maximum window size https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/123473 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 6270] Re: no support for TV-Out
I think that project, which "can enable the crt out (port for external monitor)", is for normal external screens, not TV Outs. There is a forum article there: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1247796&forum_id=369761 asking for them to work on the TV Out as well. I'm not sure why it is necessary... [Bug 116328] Re: no sound with ubuntu install on gateway laptop
If you need anything else from me please let me know. You will get prompt replies. I have followed the advice of several forums posts, and the alsa install instructions, to no avail. I now have a fresh install of Fiesty (7.04), along with all the updates available on 7/1/07. I have checked to make sure nothing is muted in the alsa mixer, and I have check the headphone jack. There is no sound at all. Ubuntu does not seem aware of this, as the volume controls act as they should. If I go to Preferences -> Sound, here is what I see under the devices tab: Sound Events: Sound Playback: Autodetect (If I try to run test, a progress bar dialog comes up, but the progress bar only finishes about 15%, then does nothing) Music and Movies: Sound Playback: Autodetect (test is same as above) Audio Conferencing: Sound Playback: Autodetect (test is same as above) Sound Capture: ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (test fails with this message: Failed to construct test pipeline for 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat' When I hit the close button on this dialog a short while later, a dialog with this message appears is not responding - you may chose to wait a short while for it to continue or force the application to quit entirely. The application never continues, and when I press the button to force quit, the sound preferences dialog quits.) Default Mixer Tracks Device: HDA ATI SB(Alsa mixer) Master PCM Capture Capture MUX Under the sounds tab, the only two sounds enabled are the login and logout sounds. When I press play on either of these sounds, nothing happens. No dialog, no sound, the button momentarily clicks visually, but nothing else occurs. If there are any other commands you need me to run, or even if you need remote access to my laptop, please let me know. It is important to me to get sound running on this laptop.
