[Bug 128852] [Feisty] Problems with resume from suspend to RAM on Thinkpad Z61m

2007-07-27 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Description:

In Gnome power manage I have enabled the option that it shall go to
suspend to RAM after an idle time of 30 minutes. After powering up my
laptop again I typed my password to return to my running Gnome session.
But then there appeard a message from Gnome Power Mangager that there
were problems when (resuming) to/from suspend - can't remember it
exactly because suddenly my laptop suspended to disk... After powering
on my laptop again my Gnome restored Gnome session was there.

In attached /var/log/messages it happended at the following time:

...
Jul 28 00:44:28 localhost kernel: [36911.128000] SMP alternatives: switching to
UP code
Jul 28 07:37:30 localhost kernel: [36911.132000] CPU1 is down
..

seems that computer suspends too early before all tasks are done!?

How to reproduce:
1. Enable option in gnome-power-manager to suspend to RAM after an idle time
2. Wait that time
3. After computer is suspended power it on again.

Does this always happen?
Only sometimes. If I suspend to RAM manually that does not happen.

Ooo! And I just noticed, by the example I gave, that the naughty thing
rounds the last digit too! That should definitely be mentioned in the
manual OR fixed so that it doesn't do that.

[Bug 128851] "pi" doesn't return a result to the number of places desired

2007-07-27 Thread Conrad Knauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pi

I'm running Feisty current to the repositories. I installed the package
"pi" and according to its man page:

---
SYNOPSIS
   pi [digits]

DESCRIPTION
The pi command prints 100 decimal digits of Archimedes’ constant pi or
a number of digits specified by an integer parameter on the command
   line.
---

However, it doesn't quite seem to get the number of digits right.

If I type "pi" it returns:

3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974944592307816406286208998628034825342117067982148

which is NOT 100 digits, nor to 100 decimal places:

3.
1415926535
8979323846
2643383279
5028841971
6939937510
5820974944
5923078164
0628620899
8628034825
3421170679
82148

so to 105 decimal places or a total of 106 digits.

If you use the option of supplying the number, it gets even weirder:

"pi 1" to "pi 3" returns:
3.1416
"pi 4" to "pi 5" returns:
3.1415927
"pi 6" to "pi 14" returns:
3.141592653589793
etc.

[Bug 96084] Re: boot - /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

2007-07-27 Thread Robert C. Mullins
Yes, it seems this bug is being encountered alot. Google searched
forums are coming up with thousands of un-answered problem threads.

I have the same problem. Pretty much a brand new Dell Latitude D830.
Not sure of the mobo or some of the other hardware. It is running an
Intel Centrino Duo, and it seems that alot of people having boot
problems are having this error.

I am having the same error with Ubuntu, and Kubutnu 7.04. I need to try
and find an old 6.10 disk, if thats what I need to do to make this work.
I love Ubuntu, and wish this would work sometime soon or its back to
gates-ware. blech!

[Bug 128847] [gutsy] gdm.conf now forces -dpi 96 by default

2007-07-27 Thread Anders Kaseorg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Between gdm 2.19.4-0ubuntu1 and 2.19.4-0ubuntu2, the X server command was
changed to
  command=/usr/bin/X -dpi 96 -br -audit 0
I have a higher-resolution display, so my fonts became smaller. This change is
not explicitly mentioned in the changelog, so I assume it was overlooked during
the Debian sync.

In a time when high-resolution displays are becoming more popular, 96
DPI is not reasonable as a universal default anymore. Please remove

[Bug 128845] restricted-manager 0.23 doesn't recognise my laptop's nvidia card.

but searching for the first part of that string in the *.restricted file
proves fruitless:

[Bug 118292] Re: vol_id: detects vfat instead of ext3 UUID

2007-07-27 Thread Bill Metzenthen
I have been bitten by the same bug.

In my case the disk drive started life with the installation of Fedora
(although the the computer supplier had used some version of Windows on
the disk for testing, which was removed before the computer was supplied
to me). I had no problems using the disk with Fedora for several years.

Kubuntu looked interesting, so I decided to try it by installing it on a
second drive which I added to the computer.

Kubuntu installed and I have been using it (e.g. now) and working around
the inevitable bugs and inconsistencies...

A particularly annoying bug is the fact that udev fails to see my
original Fedora partition. This means that I can't use the LABEL or
UUID methods for that partition in fstab (udev deletes the entries in
/dev/disk and creates new ones each time it is restarted. "mount"
appears to use these entries). Ubuntu uses the new-fangled "upstart"
init scheme (which is annoying on two counts: how it works on Ubuntu
doesn't appear to be well documented, and it seems to be mostly set up
to emulate Sysv init anyway!). Having worked my way through this maze
(init and udev), I found that script /etc/udev/rules.d/65-persistent-
storage.rules appears to be one of the main culprits.

The udev script uses the "vol_id" program to fetch the information about the
LABEL and UUID of each disk device. (remark: the man page for vol_id omits
several of the options which vol_id accepts, including --help and --probe-all)
`vol_id --probe-all` reveals that it identifies two partition signatures on my
old Fedora partition: a vfat one and an ext3 one. For some reason (I haven't
yet been able to find an explanation in my googling) it is possible to have
both at the same time. The vfat signature is, it appears, always in the first
512 bytes. The ext3 ones start at byte 1024. Thus is would appear that it is
possible to have the two valid signatures at the same time by either of the
following: format a partition as a vfat drive first and then format it as ext3,
or (possibly) format it as vfat and then use it and then by chance have the
Windows FAT contain a valid ext3 signature (I don't know whether this is
possible but it almost certainly has a very low probability). A key question
here is: why didn't the program I used to format the partition as ext3 write
nulls over the first 512 bytes?

The solution for me was, as I found on the web, to do "dd if=/dev/zero
of=/dev/XXX bs=512 count=1" and hope I didn't mistype it.

However, this took quite a lot of time to track down and I know from my
web searching that the bug has troubled a number of people. It
certainly didn't make Ubuntu look very "user friendly". I believe that
the bug should be squashed (or beaten into submission) and that the
importance should be above "low".

Some ways to make the process work better:
1. It would appear to be fairly easy to detect the multiple signatures
("vol_id --probe-all") before udev sets up the /dev/disk entries for a
partition and then, if the relevant partition table entry id is not for an MS
file system, to offer to wipe the first 512 bytes for the user (with
appropriate warnings).
2. Do the same checks during the installation process for Ubuntu.
3. Do the same checks in programs such as the KDE "Disk & Filesystem
Configuration Tool"
4. An interesting alternative would be to modify the behaviour of "vol_id" to
always check for multiple signatures and then, if vfat and ext3 (or similar)
are found, to default to returning the information from the second signature
instead of the first (which it does now). This would appear to have a finite,
but low, probability of failure but this probability could be lowered by
comparing the relevant areas of the two copies of the MS FAT.

[Bug 120108] Re: Radio isn't working in web browser

2007-07-27 Thread Cristóbal M . Palmer
Omerta, Siegfried:

Can you try adding a -v to mplayer to see what errors it's giving? Can
you provide other examples of URLs that fail to play with mplayer? Have
you checked the mplayer website for clues?

[Bug 60258] Re: Ruby crashes while using gnome-art-manager

2007-07-27 Thread xtknight
Please have a look at the updated patches.

Áron Sisak: yeah that is a problem. I think the program needs a
complete replacement, to be honest. There is also a problem when you
maximize the window that some things aren't painted properly when you
scroll through a list of themes.

All: I also have found a fix for the About dialog box problem (use
about.run and about.hide instead of about.show in main_window.rb).
Should this be in another bug report altogether or shall I just post
these here also?

[Bug 128833] ide-generic not loaded by initrd

2007-07-27 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initrd-tools

I installed Xubuntu 7.04 Feisty on a Computer Dynamics SBC-MaX, a PC-104
small form-factor board (http://www.cdynamics.com/support/manuals/sbc-
max/sbcmax.pdf) . This board is a unique combination of high-
integration, primitive architecture, obsolete and mediocre components,
and a completely broken BIOS. After working around the BIOS and video
issues, I was able to get Xubuntu installed off an alternate CD but when
it rebooted, the drive didn't mount and it ended up in initramfs. A
"modprobe ide-generic" mounted the drives and the boot process finished
without error. I then created a new initrd image with vaird which
eliminated the problem, for now.

[Bug 128827] [feisty] Adept crash in Kubuntu 7.0.4 after a few upgradations

2007-07-27 Thread Kalyan
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I have installed emacs and some other packages to go along with emacs
these were installed and soon after the installation was complete Adept
crashed attached below is the backlog generated.

Another observation to go along with this is that soon after the crash I
restarted Adept and tried installing other packages, and observed that
the packages are downloaded but after 27-37% of installation the Adept
reports "There is an error committing. Problem downloading the package or
commit would break the package". I tried it out with six of the packages and
it happened with all of them.

[Bug 128825] Re: Monitors go into stand-by when only using one monitor

2007-07-27 Thread Sir Nikon
I made an error when posting this.

It happens regardless of whether or not MythTV is running.

After a little bit of further reading, it is now my understanding that
when you have dual monitors, it causes Gnome to run two instances (one
for each monitor). It would seem that since it is running two instances,
the instance not being used would consider itself idle and send the
system's monitors into standby.

[Bug 125179] Re: when vino is running for several hours, performance degrades, making xorg to eat up cpu usage

2007-07-27 Thread eldragon
well, actually, i wouldnt know how to reproduce the bugit just happens
when vino is up and running...
it took me a while to figure this out since vino wasnt actually showing any
performance degrading...
when the server was runningbeing connected to it (or not), performance
would degrade with time.
the process being problematic when vino is running, is not vino itself, but
xorg. could it be xorg at fault instead of vino?
killing vino fixes the issue for me.
ive been tracking xorg's logs and the kernel logs for a while trying to figure
out what the problem could be, vino isnt in them. i ended up killing vino by
chance. and presto.

[Bug 128825] Monitors go into stand-by when only using one monitor

2007-07-27 Thread Sir Nikon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

I do apologize for the confusing summary.

I recently connected another monitor to my computer (which was a whole
slew of issues that are almost resolved). I've noticed that with the
monitor standby power setting set (which currently is at 5 minutes), the
monitors go into standby regardless of whether or not the computer is in
use. So, even if I'm using the computer, the monitors will still fade
away and shut off, but quickly turned back on when I press a key or move
the mouse (meaning, standby works as properly, except it always goes to
standby, whether idle or not).

Before I connected the new monitor, standby worked properly and would
not go into standby unless the computer was idle or not being used.

I run MythTV on a separate monitor. I use the other monitor for all of
my other computer activities (Internet, documents, graphics, etc.). It
seems that if MythTV is running but nothing is being done within the
program, the computer will send both of the monitors in to standby mode.
If I move my mouse or type a key on the MythTV screen, it seems to
prevent the issue (meaning standby works).

I hope this sums up the issue. It seems to be difficult to really say
what the issue is.

[Bug 123848] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in cairo_set_line_width()

2007-07-27 Thread Kevin Godby
I just used the restricted drivers manager to disable and re-enable my
nvidia driver, and it did add those two lines to the xorg.conf file.
Interestingly, though it added the lines to the Device section, whereas
the info I found online suggested I add the lines to the Screen section.
I'm not sure which is correct, but both appear to work.

As to this particular bug, however, I still think it's a valid bug.
Compiz should not segfault -- ever -- for any reason. A better solution
would be to recommend to the user that those two lines should be added
to the xorg.conf file. An ever nicer solution would be to offer to add
the lines to the file so the user doesn't have to.

[Bug 128819] Add more Low latency kernels to list.

2007-07-27 Thread Ken Phillis Jr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux

This is a feature request mainly, but it's mainly adding 1 or 2 more
kernel images to the repository. it's low latency versions of the kernel
for the amd64 and the i386 releases ( although i don't know if a generic
version exists either since i can't tell from the low latency kernel
used in fiesty )

i don't think so travis. i had used the restricted driver manager to
enable my nvidia drivers. or "maybe" it is/was a bug in restricted
driver manager from tribe 1 and previous dailies. because i remember i
used tribe 1 to install gutsy.

i believe that with the new updates to the restricted driver manager it
only checks if the driver is enable or not. and not if all the lines
where actually added to xorg.conf

try to check on that.

[Bug 128817] Weird screen brightness on Lenovo 3000 N100

2007-07-27 Thread Rémy Sanchez
Public bug reported:

My computer is a Lenovo 3000 N100 768-FKG and I am using gusty.
When I use the keys FN+Brightness up/down, it does not allow me to set all
levels of brightness : I can go to the lowest level but I cannot make the
screen brighter if I am upper than about 50%. Plus, the brightness bar that is
used to show up when you changes brightness does not shows up.
An other thing about this bar, is that it sometimes shows up and sets the
brightness to the maximum whatever was the previous level. It happens when I do
- when I think I do, because I was unable to reproduce it - some move in the
lower right corner of the touchpad.

I have found that using LVM from the alternate install cd does nearly
the same thing; It hangs for about two minutes as each logical volume is
created. The logs show the message: "Rendevous with udev failed for
'Group-Volume'; stat failed no such file or directory". This makes
installing a system with lvm partitions painfully slow.

[Bug 121801] Re: Suspend using vesa driver and NVIDIA 8400M GS doesn't work

2007-07-27 Thread Nick_Hill
Hello Matthew

don't know if this helps, but I have provided xorg.0.log outputs for
the 6100 before and after suspend to RAM in my Bug #128413 , after
resume from STR, the computer is responsive, can SSH in, but has no
display. It may be a special situation with this chipset where the
machine is actually accessible (not catatonic) after STR with Nvidia
GPU.

The differences in Xorg.0.log can be summarised as:

Before STR, we had line 631:
(**) Option "dpms"
but after STR, neither that line or anything after it is written.

After STR, re-starting X gives on line 617:
(WW) NV(0): Cannot read colourmap from VGA. Will restore with default

Otherwise, the two files are the same.

[Bug 120810] Re: [Gutsy] timidity install fails

This will start working if you reload your sound card information:
'sudo asoundconf list' to find the name of the card, and 'sudo asoundconf

'/etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart' to reload alsa, and then finish the
installation. Everything should be fixed then.

[Bug 106244] Re: CONF Variable in /etc/init.d/mysql unused

2007-07-27 Thread Dan Munckton
On analysing this further I discovered that simply duplicating
/etc/init.d/mysql and changing the value of the CONF variable would
never be enough to properly support multiple instances of mysql even if
references to the configuration file were passed on to the mysql
scripts/binaries using the --defaults-file option.

The main issue is that the debian maintainer scripts are not designed to
iterate through multiple instances when the package is updated. For
instance this means the other instances would not have table upgrades
applied.

The proper way to do multi-instances is with the upstream script
mysqld_multi but apparently work still needs to be done to support this
properly in Debian/Ubuntu.

After discussing on #ubuntu-server with mathiaz, infinity and others it
was agreed that this bug should not be fixed but instead we should mark
clearly in the init script that multiple instances are not supported in
this way.

The attached debdiff adds this warning comment to /etc/init.d/mysql and
includes the minor tidy up mods from the previous patch.

I look forward to any feedback.

[Bug 128809] Xen Python "auxbin.py" file/package issue.

2007-07-27 Thread dan_linder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-xen-3.1

During normal "apt-get update" process, it was failing in "Setting up

This was the error message:

 3File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/xen/util/auxbin.py", line 39

9 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
10 Errors were encountered while processing:

Since I haven't had time to play with Xen, I uninstalled the "python-
xen-3.1" package (shown as the owner of the auxbin.py file by "dpkg
-S").

I would gladly re-install Xen to help track this down.

[Bug 107738] Re: network-manager-pptp isn't installed by default

2007-07-27 Thread Fabián Rodríguez
@Steven Harms: there are no plans for any interim releases except for
LTS releases. As such, there won' t be any other 7.04 releases. If this
package is included in a future version of Ubuntu Live CDs, it would be
Gutsy (7.10) or later.

The LiveCD is built from " seeds". To learn more about seeds managements, see:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SeedManagement

" * The installation CD contains the software in the Installer, Minimal,
Standard, Desktop, and Ship seeds (and their dependencies)
*The installation/live DVD contains the software in the Installer, Casper,
Minimal, Standard, Desktop, Ship, Live, and Supported seeds (and their
dependencies)
* The live CD contains the software in the Casper, Minimal, Standard,
Desktop, and Live seeds (and their dependencies)"

I would suggest proposing the package for inclusion in the Desktop seed.

Proposals for adding new packages to the seeds must follow this process:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MainInclusionProcess

Please prepare a report as described on that page and send the proposal
and a link to the report to the ubuntu-devel mailing list at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

I can't figure out how to provide a backtrace. The instructions demand I put
in the name of the faulty program in the line for gdb, but I can't figure
out whether you're saying the problem is something other than python. For
instance, you say:

** Changed in: update-notifier (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: None => update-notifier

Assignee: (unassigned) => Áron Sisak
  Status: Unconfirmed => Needs Info

and then you say:

** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: update-notifier => apt

but I don't know what any of that means. Does this say the problem is apt,
not python?

[Bug 123848] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in cairo_set_line_width()

2007-07-27 Thread Kevin Godby
Potential fix below.

When I ran 'gnome-appearance-properties' from a terminal, I saw a few
errors like:

/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32

To resolve this issue, I added to following two lines:

Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping""True"

to the "Screen" section of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and restarted X
Windows (logout of Gnome and at the login screen, press Ctrl-Alt-
Backspace, then login again).

After logging back in again, enabling desktop effects worked.

Some specs:
 - nVidia Go 7600 video card
 - Using the nvidia Xorg driver (not nv)
 - Kernel version: 2.6.22-8-generic
 - compiz package version 1:0.5.1+git20070725-0ubuntu1

reproducable with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the
