[Bug 130311] Merge erlang 11.b.5dfsg (universe) from Debian (unstable)

2007-08-03 Thread Michele Angrisano
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: erlang

erlang (1:11.b.5dfsg-2ubuntu1) gutsy; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable, remaining changes:
- debian/rules: Add -fno-stack-protector to fix broken crypto_drv.
- Update maintainer field in debian/control.

Debian changelog (since 1:11.b.5dfsg-1ubuntu1):
erlang (1:11.b.5dfsg-2) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Sergei Golovan ]
  * Linked openssl libraries dynamically instead of new default static linking
which causes difficulties with security updates.

I think this bug has been fixed by this patch:

Since I updated it on Aug. 2, no system freeze any more by using xfwm4.

[Bug 130305] No link beat

2007-08-03 Thread Richard Reid
Public bug reported:

I have no idea if this is a problem with network-manager, launchpad forced me
to choose some project.
Today my gutsy system (MSI RS480M2-IL with Athlon X2 3200+)refused to connect
to the network. Working the problem I discovered gutsy-tribe 3,2,1 and feisty
also refused to connect to the network, even though all these had worked on
this system 2 days before.
Poking around I discovered there was NO link beat to my ethernet switch. Since
this system also had a hdd with windows XP installed I changed the boot hdd and
booted XP which started the network controller (the link beat started) and
connected to the network just fine. I then noticed when I shutdown XP it turned
the ethernet controller off ( the link beat stopped). This is a NEW windows XP
behavior, I am fairly sure XP didn't do this 2 or 3 days ago before my last XP
update. I tried reseting the system while XP was running, which left the
network controller on, changing the boot hdd back to gutsy, booted gutsy and
the network connection came up just fine!
So--- Ubuntu needs to check to see if the network controller is on, and if not
then start it before continuing with its boot up. Where this code should go I
have no idea.
Also I don't know whither or not this is a problem with other motherboard
chipsets.

[Bug 130304] PHP extension 'MapScript' only runs in Apache DSO

2007-08-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5-mapscript

The PHP5 MapScript extension (from the UMN MapServer project) does not
work when PHP5 is running in either CGI/FCGI or CLI modes. For example,
when trying to use the MapScript extension in a PHP5 script run from the
command line, the following error message is emitted:

"This build of mapscript can't be load as a 'cli' module for stability
reason, but only with php as an apache DSO."

I have examined the package source, and I have isolated the cause of
this bug. There is a specific patch in the Debian build source for
package 'php5-mapscript' that inserts a check in the startup code for
the PHP/MapScript extension. The inserted code checks the sapi_module
name, and if it is 'cli', 'cgi', or 'cgi-fcgi', the extension emits the
above error message, and exits.

Specifically, the patch is:
mapserver-${version}/debian/patches/20_php_build.dpatch
(As I write this, ${version} == "4.10.2".)

Whatever the reason for forbidding the use of the PHP/MapScript
extension in CGI/FCGI or CLI modes, I believe that it is no longer
valid. In fact, the MapServer documentation recommends running
PHP/MapScript in CGI mode, in preference to DSO.

See: http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/docs/howto/phpmapscript-install
Specifically, this FAQ appears there:
Q: Does PHP/Mapscript have to be setup as a CGI? If so, why?
A: Yes, please see the [link]PHP/Mapscript CGI page[/link] in the
Mapserver Wiki for details.

I feel that the simplest and best remedy for this bug is to remove the
above patch ('20_php_build.dpatch') from the package build source.
Furthermore, the package comments or notes ideally should mention that
PHP/MapScript is recommended to be run in PHP as CGI, and possibly even
warn users that there could be instability issues when run in DSO mode.

[Bug 76197] Re: icon disappears when dbus is restarted

This is currently a problem for some laptops. Restarting dbus fixes all
sorts of issues after suspend (for example, on a thinkpad T61 the cdrom
stops working, network connections time out, etc till dbus is
restarted).

The gnome power monitor should handle this more gracefully than to
simply die. (It could go away temporarily and check occationally to see
if dbus is back and resume control)

This is the only one visible to me, after several weeks of use.

[Bug 130299] gutsy uses old version of coreutils

2007-08-03 Thread Tino Meinen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: coreutils

Gutsy still uses coreutils 5.97 (released 24-06-2007) whereas upstream version
6.9 (released 22-03-2007) is already out.
See http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/coreutils/ for the latest version.

Changes from 5.97 onward: ( copied from the News file)
---
* Noteworthy changes in release 6.9 (2007-03-22) [stable]

** Bug fixes

cp -x (--one-file-system) would fail to set mount point permissions

The default block size and output format for df -P are now unaffected by
the DF_BLOCK_SIZE, BLOCK_SIZE, and BLOCKSIZE environment variables. It
is still affected by POSIXLY_CORRECT, though.

Using pr -m -s (i.e. merging files, with TAB as the output separator)
no longer inserts extraneous spaces between output columns.

* Noteworthy changes in release 6.8 (2007-02-24) [not-unstable]

** Bug fixes

chgrp, chmod, and chown now honor the --preserve-root option.
Before, they would warn, yet continuing traversing and operating on /.

chmod no longer fails in an environment (e.g., a chroot) with openat
support but with insufficient /proc support.

"cp --parents F/G D" no longer creates a directory D/F when F is not
a directory (and F/G is therefore invalid).

"cp --preserve=mode" would create directories that briefly had
too-generous permissions in some cases. For example, when copying a
directory with permissions 777 the destination directory might
temporarily be setgid on some file systems, which would allow other
users to create subfiles with the same group as the directory. Fix
similar problems with 'install' and 'mv'.

cut no longer dumps core for usage like "cut -f2- f1 f2" with two or
more file arguments. This was due to a double-free bug, introduced
  in coreutils-5.3.0.

dd bs= operands now silently override any later ibs= and obs=
operands, as POSIX and tradition require.

"ls -FRL" always follows symbolic links on Linux. Introduced in
  coreutils-6.0.

  A cross-partition "mv /etc/passwd ~" (by non-root) now prints
a reasonable diagnostic. Before, it would print this:
"mv: cannot remove `/etc/passwd': Not a directory".

pwd and "readlink -e ." no longer fail unnecessarily when a parent
  directory is unreadable.

"rm -rf /etc/passwd" (run by non-root) now prints a diagnostic.
  Before it would print nothing.

"rm --interactive=never F" no longer prompts for an unwritable F

** New features

  sort's new --compress-program=PROG option specifies a compression
program to use when writing and reading temporary files.
This can help save both time and disk space when sorting large inputs.

sort accepts the new option -C, which acts like -c except no diagnostic
is printed. Its --check option now accepts an optional argument, and
--check=quiet and --check=silent are now aliases for -C, while
--check=diagnose-first is an alias for -c or plain --check.

* Noteworthy changes in release 6.7 (2006-12-08) [stable]

** Bug fixes

When cp -p copied a file with special mode bits set, the same bits
were set on the copy even when ownership could not be preserved.
This could result in files that were setuid to the wrong user.
To fix this, special mode bits are now set in the copy only if its
ownership is successfully preserved. Similar problems were fixed
with mv when copying across file system boundaries. This problem
affects all versions of coreutils through 6.6.

cp --preserve=ownership would create output files that temporarily
had too-generous permissions in some cases. For example, when
copying a file with group A and mode 644 into a group-B sticky
directory, the output file was briefly readable by group B.
Fix similar problems with cp options like -p that imply
--preserve=ownership, with install -d when combined with either -o
or -g, and with mv when copying across file system boundaries.
This bug affects coreutils 6.0 through 6.6.

du --one-file-system (-x) would skip subdirectories of any directory
listed as second or subsequent command line argument. This bug affects
  coreutils-6.4, 6.5 and 6.6.

* Noteworthy changes in release 6.6 (2006-11-22) [stable]

** Bug fixes

ls would segfault (dereference a NULL pointer) for a file with a
nameless group or owner. This bug was introduced in coreutils-6.5.

A bug in the latest official m4/gettext.m4 (from gettext-0.15)
made configure fail to detect gettext support, due to the unusual
way in which coreutils uses AM_GNU_GETTEXT.

** Improved robustness

Now, du (and the other fts clients: chmod, chgrp, chown) honor a
trailing slash in the name of a symlink-to-directory even on
Solaris 9, by working around its buggy fstatat implementation.

* Major changes in release 6.5 (2006-11-19) [stable]

** Bug fixes

du (and the other fts clients: chmod, chgrp, chown) would exit early
  when encountering an inacces

[Bug 130298] add_action() method does not work at all

2007-08-03 Thread Till Kamppeter
Public bug reported:

If I run the example program test-multi-actions.py which comes with the
upstream source code of notify-python (in tests/ directory) no
notification bubble shows. If I comment out all the "n.add_action()"
calls the bubble shows in the lower right corner screen, but naturally
without links for the actions.

Same also with my own little test program test.py. Here an empty bubble
shows up for less than a second when the "n.add_action()" call is not
commented out. With the call commented out the bubble shows near the
upper right corner of the screen.

The real life problem is with hal-cups-utils and system-config-printer.
hal-cups-utils gets triggered by HAL when a USB printer is plugged. Then
it creates a print queue and sends notification requests to the system-
config-printer-applet. The applet is supposed to show a bubble via
notify-python and by clicking links in this bubble the user can
configure options for his new print queue. Due to the bug with
add_action() the bubble does not show.

2007-08-03 Thread franganghi
You're right!

I think we have only one goal to reach at the moment: we must arrange thinks to
make ubuntu the best os for US, not for nobody-knows-who!
One day, "other people" will envy our desktop, our cube, the usability of our
system and so on... and for Microsoft THAT DAY will be a "cloudy" day.

Asking ourselves which is the best strategy to follow NOW will lead us
nowhere.

[Bug 28596] Re: Totem will not play dvd

2007-08-03 Thread Matthew Craig
After thinking about this issue, I feel the Ubuntu documentation should
be updated, even with a footnote or a hyperlink to further explanation.
Linux is all about using open and free software, and I think people who
want to watch an open, unencrypted DVD should be given the information
how to do it. I don't mean to spoil the meaning for the 95% of Ubuntu
users who want to watch their video rental, but I think it would be
keeping with the spirit of the Linux OS to have details on unencrypted
DVD playback.

Also, Phil,I don't know of any small unencrypted DVD images. I just
watch and redistribute DVDs which friends with Mac OS make for me. I
don't know how to make them myself. (Is that what Ubuntu Studio does?)
Regardless, Thank you very much for your response.

Re: [Bug 86477] Re: pages show as loaded but no content is displayed

2007-08-03 Thread Joe Cai
The problem still exists on firefox 2.0.0.6. Due to the fact that only
a few of the firefox users are experiencing this issue. I suspect it
might be a hardware specific problem. And I've sent some emails asking
people about their hardware configuration. Unfortunately I was not
able to get enough replies. But I do get it from Harm van Bakel that
he's using ATI Radeon Mobility which I also have in my laptop.I'm
curious if this is something common or not:p

that quod libet had crashed and asking me if I wanted to report the bug But
there was no but at all : quod libet was still alive, and I was still able to
use it.
So apport thought that quod libet crashed when I activated the systray icon,

And I cannot reproduce the bug, and since I've re-installed ubuntu, there is

[Bug 129260] Re: corruption when using md raid1 on amd64 smp

2007-08-03 Thread Joseph Fisk
I reinstalled Ubuntu 6.06 LTS on the problem system. Now the root fs is
on a single drive, and I made a separate raid1 (using md) on a pair of
WD5000's, mounted on /test. So far, I haven't seen any corruption
issues.

I'll let it keep running for now, and if by tomorrow I don't see any
corruption, I'll reinstall again with the root fs on raid1, as before,
using the same WD5000's, and see if the problem still occurs.

Previously, the problematic raid1 used a pair of WD3200's.

[Bug 130290] [gutsy] detects wifi card and networks but can't connect

2007-08-03 Thread Rémy Sanchez

With ubuntu gutsy, the network manager detects both my ethernet card and my
wifi card. When I plug the ethernet in, it configures the inteface correctly,
but if I ask to connect to my wifi (unencrypted), it just shows the
"connecting" animation for a few minutes and then fail silently and show the
"not connected" icon.
If I manually configure the network, the wifi works fine (but only after a
restart. If I don't restart the computer, I have to do "ifup eth1")

[Bug 129855] Re: new Partition Editor 'Check' breaks md partitions

2007-08-03 Thread Tony T
(fyi - in my original post I meant to write 16 blocks for the md
superblock, not 64)

whew! I managed to fix my system. And it still points to there being a
serious bug somewhere in either the new Partition Editor (in Gutsy) or
e2fsck or resize2fs. One of them has the code for 'md' superblocks
BACKWARDS. Instead of excluding the 16 blocks at the end of the
partition (where the md-superblock resides) they 'include' it.

Here's what happened to my partition size:
- original/correct size of my /md0 partitions = 2,441,840 blocks
- physical size of my /md0 drives = 2,441,856 blocks
- size that the partitions got resized to = 2,441,872 blocks ... 32 blocks too
many!

The solution was to boot the Gutsy LiveCD again and manually run the correct
'resize2fs' command,
 > resize2fs /dev/sda1 2441840
 > resize2fs /dev/sdb1 2441840

I then rebooted and everything appears to be working perfectly. So, at
the very least, the resize command didn't damage anything ... it 'just'
made it unbootable!

[Bug 130289] synaptic proxy password must not contain "@" sign

2007-08-03 Thread tube
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

I'm not very familiar with the long term proxy strategy in ubuntu, so it is
kind of obvious for me that an "@" sign in the password will not work for the
variable:
http_proxy=http://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]@server:9080

maybe you need quotes in order to parse that

It is not clear to me though when I type the password into a password field as
I had to do it for the synaptic proxy settings.
I was using such a password ever since. No problem for firefox or other
browsers.

In this case synaptic reveals even parts of my password in the error
message.

I changed my password, but I guess this needs to be changed. Just wanted
to let you know. Hope it helps.

[Bug 130281] Installation of Povray 3.6.1 doesn't include necessary "include" directory

2007-08-03 Thread Josh K
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: povray

I installed Povray (Version string: " 3.6.1 (Debian  (i486-linux-gnu-g++
4.1.2 @ i486-pc-linux-gnu))" . I used the package "povray" from the
feisty multiverse (I have "deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/ feisty
main multiverse restricted" in my sources.list).

Anyway, the installation made the directory

/usr/share/povray/

with subdirectories
/usr/share/povray/icons
/usr/share/povray/ini
/usr/share/povray/scripts

but not the necessary include folder, namely
/usr/share/povray/include

which contains necessary files such as "colors.inc" and "textures.inc".
I looked through my drive for these files anywhere else to no avail. Not
sure how the install managed to miss this, but shouldn't be too hard to
fix. Thank you for your time.

operating system before but I have logged plenty for proprietary systems
like the AS400. Being new to Linux and the fact that it is all
unfamiliar and new I am a little lost when it comes to finding out
details to help with solving Ubuntu problems.

Since logging the bug I have been reading the Ubuntu formus and
searching through Google and have since discovered quite a few things
about iPods and Ububtu. One thing I discovered was that my iPod was
mounted read-only which was I know was causing Rhythmbox to do all sorts
of strange things and basically not work as I would have expected.

The mp3 files I found with extra 6 characters after .mp3 as it turned out were
duplicates of the real mp3 files in some folders in my library. I deleted these
mp3xx files and reloaded Rhythmbox and all was ok. And I haven't had a
problem since then.
PS. By the way I think Ubuntu is my new passion and I love it.

[Bug 50385] Re: samba can't be launched by a normal user (qemu related)

2007-08-03 Thread Joe Soroka
Another thing to watch out for is that qemu only listens on 10.0.2.4
port 139. I just tried smbclient on feisty and it seems to try port 445
first, by default, and that ends up going straight to the host smbd
rather than the qemu-controlled phony one. Try "smbclient -p 139
//10.0.2.4/qemu" and see if that helps.

[Bug 130282] CD/DVD Creator using incorrect file size units

2007-08-03 Thread Joel Parker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

The Nautilus CD/DVD Creator function is using completely wrong file size
units in its dialogs.

I have an example file:

$ ls -lh --si
total 1.2G
-rwxr--r-- 1 joeljkp joeljkp 1.2G 2007-08-02 23:03 file.7z
$ ls -lh
total 1.1G
-rwxr--r-- 1 joeljkp joeljkp 1.1G 2007-08-02 23:03 file.7z
$

Notice that that's 1.2 gigabytes in SI form (1GB = 1000^3 bytes), and
1.1 gigabytes in non-SI form (1GB = 1024^3 bytes, equiv. to 1.1
gibibytes).

When I put this file into the CD/DVD Creator, it shows the file size as
1.1GB (obviously using the non-standard notation).

However, when I press the Write to Disc function, it states "Data Size:
1.0 GiB".

This means that this dialog is trying to use gibibytes by assuming the
file listing is using SI gigabytes. This assumption is wrong, leading to
all kinds of confusion.

Either the Write to Disc dialog should say "1.1 GB" (keeping with non-
standard notation), "1.1 GiB" (standard binary notation but not
internally consistent with the file listing), or "1.2 GB" (again,
standard notation but not internally consistent with the file listing).

[Bug 130280] "grub stage1.5 error 17" after restart

2007-08-03 Thread Nimex
Public bug reported:

I usually put my computer on standby, so it had been a fairly long time
since I had restarted and had system changes take effect. What I think
has happened is one (or maybe both...) of two things:

-something went wrong with the last update (kernel perhaps), or
-I was trying to install Windows Vista on another partition. I formated some
unallocated space inside the Vista setup program. For some reason, the program
would not allow me to start the install because it 'didn't recognize any
partitions that it could install on' or something like that. Then, after
messing around with the install/setup program to no avail, I restarted. This
gave me the error.

Here is a timeline to follow all of this: Computer in use: estimating 4
days (standby frequently with updates every now and then) --> shut down
--> boot with vista setup cd inside --> rebooted after failing to
install --> recieved error 17 --> booted computer with ubuntu live cd
--> now I'm here

If anyone has any solutions to how I can correct this problem, please
submit it as soon as possible. I have seen many people have error 17's,
but they are not like my exact circumstances. I believe all grub error
17 issues should be considered critical, as this is fast becoming a
widespread issue from what I have observed.

2007-08-03 Thread shanen \(Shannon Jacobs\)
Well, putting on my professional technical editor hat, I would ask you
[John Vivirito] to be careful about the precision of your wording. You
seemed to be asking me about the update repositories, which do appear on
a specific Updates tab of the Settings->Repositories. However, it now
appears you were asking about Multiverse on the Ubuntu Software tab.
However, I would not be able to install or reinstall the Flash package
in question if that repository were not already selected.

My bottom line is I still can't watch Flash content on this particular
Ubuntu machine.

[Bug 85488] Re: some usb_devices fault if usb_suspend enabled

2007-08-03 Thread Michael Chang
@Mark: Sitsofe is testing with the *Gusty* (you could say "alpha", "next
version" or "testing") kernels, trying his best to ensure that this
problem *does not affect the next release*. Whether it is worthwhile or
not, at least he is TRYING to help fix the problem.

If you would like to contact Canon, you are free to do so and report
back with the results. If they respond with valuable information (sans
NDA) then there should be no reason why that information could not also
be integrated into later bug fixes.

(Fortunately or unfortunately, the development model here seems to be
that fixes can only go into the next version unless it's a security fix.
Perhaps that needs to be changed, but that is a discussion for another
(wishlist priority) bug report.)

For more precise information as to the why the cedilla's are incorrect:
  http://www.secarica.ro/html/s-uri_si_t-uri.html (in Romanian):

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Download and burn Ubuntu, either 6.10 or 7.04.
  2. Boot any PC using the CD.
  3. When the OS has loaded, select System > Preferences > Keyboard
  4. Select Layouts
  5. Click on Add
  6. Select Romania > Standard, then Ok
  7. Select Romania Standard, and move it to the top of the list.
  8. Close
  9. Select Applications > Accessories > Text Editor
  10. Using a British keyboard(physical keyboard), press the keys marked ; and
' (both are just to the right hand side of the letter L)

  Actual results:
ş and ţ appear with cedillas.

  Expected results:
ș and ț to appear with commas.

  Notes:
The Romanian keyboard layout on Mac OS X 10.4.9 works as expected, as does
Windows Vista. Windows XP and below are broken like Ubuntu (and most likely
other distros too).

Re: [Bug 114870] Re: www.americascup.com doesn't display addressed page

2007-08-03 Thread Richard Reid
Sorry but the ethernet interface on my gutsy system has just quit
working. But checking with my feisty system the americascup web site
content has changed. If anybody checks using gutsy I don't know what it
tells you if it works.

[Bug 130274] Backlight keys force backlight to lowest setting

2007-08-03 Thread Stefano Rivera
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Found on my Macbook (2007), running gutsy/amd64:

Pressing the brightness up/down buttons drops the backlight down to it's
dimmest setting (or second dimmest, in the case of the up button).

Using the Power Manager Brightness Applet / (un)plugging the AC, the
backlight sets as normal. This bug seems specific to the hotkeys.

ii hal0.5.9.1-1ubuntu2

BTW: I've patched the hal configuration in accordance with bug #119184
