[Bug 132241] Re: [nvidia-glx] Many GL apps show black window when compsite is used with onboard GeForce 4 MX 440

2007-08-13 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Punting from linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22 -> linux-restricted-
modules-2.6.20

Sebastian:
Just to double check are you using Feisty with the 2.6.20 kernel?

It's unlikely the restricted-manager will let you switch between drivers
as NVIDIA only support running the latest possible driver with their
card. As it happens 3 different versions of the NVIDIA driver are
already bundled with Ubuntu 7.04 but to switch between them you will
have to manually pull in a package (and of course any problems you have
will be unsupported). See
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia for some
further details.

Now this is going to be tricky because removing manually installed
drivers tends to be VERY problematic and is unsupported but before you
switched do you know whether disabling Composite with the 96xx drivers
made a difference?

[Bug 131084] Re: Partitioning language needs resimplification

Corrections:
* "is currently running Windows XP" should be "currently has Windows XP on it"

[Bug 131084] Re: Partitioning language needs resimplification

2007-08-13 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
I agree with Matt's comments, with the proviso that "Erase entire disk"
might be confusing unless you mention what's going in its place. Even
then it would be confusing if the disk is blank (there's nothing to
erase), so that would need a different string.

Most importantly, I think, it's not clear why you're being asked "How do
you want to partition the disk?" in the first place. Is there another
operating system on one of the disks already? If so, say so! Include its
name (e.g. "Windows XP") if the migration code recognizes it, or call it
"Another system" and "the other system" otherwise. It's difficult to
understand the partitioning slider without naming the things you're
allocating space to.

For example:

This computer is currently running Windows XP. Do you want to keep it alongside
Ubuntu?

(*) Erase Windows XP, replacing it with Ubuntu

( ) Keep it, so I can choose between them at startup
[disk choice here if there's more than one disk]
How much disk space should be reserved for each system?
[partitioning slider, with both systems named]

( ) Something more complicated
[advanced partitioning appears here if selected]

The problem with the nested radio button (apart from there being only
one of them) is that it is not indented enough. Ideally, its left edge
should be exactly aligned with the left edge of the label of the parent
radiobutton. Unfortunately this is very difficult in GTK, which I
reported as a bug last month.

[Bug 132375] Dolphin doesn't properly use the help:/ kio

2007-08-13 Thread Richard Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dolphin

Dolphin does not process the help:/ kio properly. The error it displays
is:

Malformed URL
help:/kubuntu/about-kubuntu

It does however recognize that about-kubuntu is a HTML file as it
displays a huge HTML meta icon in the top right corner with about-
kubuntu right underneath it.

My suggestion would be to have Dolphin automatically open Konqueror or
KHelpCenter when it comes across the help:/ kio command. Preferably open
Konqueror over KHelpCenter.

Re: [Bug 109605] Re: Dell Dimension 2400 splash screen is blank

2007-08-13 Thread mpvano
James,

I'm sorry but although your problem most likely has the same cause, I
don't have a solution for you.

The problem being tracked in launchpad can be worked around by doing the
Ubuntu 7.04 installation using the alternate install disk, which uses
the alphanumeric console for the installation.

Once Ubuntu is installed that way, one can intercept the startup menu if
it's visible (otherwise hitting a key as directed by the prompt to
disclose it) and then highlighting the normal boot line, typing "e" to
edit it, deleting the word "splash" from that line and then typing "b"
to boot that entry without the splash screen.

Once Ubuntu has started up (if it starts), you can then use the command
"sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst" from a terminal to edit the grub menu
file to disable the graphic startup, which is the cause of the problem.

If there is a similar alternate install disk for Edubuntu, then the same
general process may work, but I'm not at all familiar with Edubuntu and
probably can't guide you through the process on a step by step basis.

As far as not replying in the forum, I no longer regularly read the
Ubuntu launchpad site, since I can no longer use Ubuntu on most of my
equipment due to the lack of fixes for other known bugs more serious
than this one. I've had to switch most of my equipment to using Debian
Etch, which oddly, seems to be tested more thoroughly and is definitely
more stable.

I received your message by an email forward from launchpad, and I'm not
sure I'd know how to catch up with you any other way. I've also sent
this reply via the launchpad reply address.

Sorry I can't be more help, but perhaps this has given you a few tips on
how to proceed

Mario

[Bug 132372] Submenus of context (right-click) menus don't work

2007-08-13 Thread Marco
Public bug reported:

In right-click menus, sub menus (eg the Create Document menu on the
Desktop context menu) display fine, but when I primary(left) click on
the entries, the menu disappears, but nothing happens. However, if I
secondary(right) click on the entries, everything works: the menu
disappears and the action occurs. Entries not in a sub menu (e.g.
Change Desktop Background in the desktop context menu) work perfectly
fine.

This happens in all GTK apps I've tried it in so far. Not sure about
kde/qt apps as I don't have any kde apps installed. Interestingly
though, the move to another workspace sub menu on the window list
context menu is not affected.

I thought the problem was compiz fusion at first, but disabling it
doesn't change anything. I also tried restarting X and logging in to
gnome with compiz disabled, but the bug persists.

The system is an up to date gutsy install. It's an upgrade from feisty.

Thank You,
Marco

as it is not an official Ubuntu repository, but maybe it's still worth
reporting that totem is unusable with this version of compiz.

[Bug 110394] Re: Keyboard freezes completely and mouse interaction doesn't work for some tasks (Happens randomly but inevitable)

2007-08-13 Thread IVIisterX
Hi Johnathon!

Sorry I thought you knew which settings I meant.

I have to enable the APIC 2.0 Support in the Bios.

I must disable the powernowd service in Ubuntu.

And I have to install the ATI-Driver Version 8.39.4.

I tested various configurations with this settings and the Kernels
2.6.20-16-generic and the 2.6.20-16-386.

Only if all settings are as above discribed and Kernel 2.6.20-16-386 is
used my machine doesn't freeze anymore.

By the way the machine freezes with various programs; there is no
certain program.

Best regards,

IVIr.X

[Bug 132367] [Sync Request Universe] netatalk 2.0.3-6

Debian changelog:

 netatalk (2.0.3-6) unstable; urgency=low

 + Replace auto-update.mk with overloading buildcore.mk.
+ Add debian/README.cdbs-tweaks and advertise it in debian/rules.
+ Fix applying buildinfo only once.
+ Fix race condition: check copyright strings in pre-build target
   (not clean target).
 + Add upstream-tarball.mk to implement get-orig-source target.
   * Declare (and cleanup) build-dependencies in debian/rules.
   * Semi-auto-update debian/control:
   DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=cdbs-autoupdate fakeroot debian/rules pre-build
   * Add patch 212 to disable cnid_metad by default. This was the only
major change in -5 initscript and thus hopefully closes: bug#384276.

Re: [Bug 132116] Re: maximized windows do not close when "X" is clicked

2007-08-13 Thread dachinster
I think i resolved the issue.
The issue occurs when "Work Spaces as a cube" are enabled in Desktop Effects
The bug still affects nautilus though, but it is due to a conflict with
Ubuntu's in-built compiz desktop effects.

I resolved the issue by disabling desktop effects, but it would be nice if
the desktop effects that ship with Ubuntu would play nice with the included
desktop mananger (Nautilus), don't you agree?

So while it is not a fault of Nautilus per se, it should still be noted that
Nautilus does not function with the native desktop effects that ship with
the Ubuntu OS.

Thanks for your response Sebastian, I am actually shocked that I got a
response!

[Bug 132363] [gutsy] image viewers render slowly with compiz normal desktop effects

2007-08-13 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When compiz normal desktop effects are enabled in Gutsy, the image
viewers I've tried render images much more slowly, eg

- Eye of Gnome
- gThumbs
- GQView (the slow-down is most noticeable with this one)

They render at normal speed (ie compared to Feisty using the fglrx
driver) with desktop effects turned off.

lspci shows my video card as:

[Bug 132360] [gutsy] vlc doesn't render properly with compiz 'normal desktop effects'

2007-08-13 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When compiz's normal desktop effects are enabled (the default in Gutsy
tribe 4), vlc does not render video properly.

Sometimes it does not render video for a few seconds, but then it
returns.

It never renders video for me when I increase the size of the window or
in full screen.

It works fine with desktop effects turned off.

Totem-xine also works fine with or without desktop effects.

[Bug 77557] Re: knetworkmanager fails to find network devices

2007-08-13 Thread waldmeister
My error was this:

** Message: another gnome-keyring-daemon is running
Error requesting name, org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: Connection
":1.9" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo"
due to security policies in the configuration file

Now i got a solution...it is not related to the keyring-manager. This old page
gave me the hint http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=125150
This page shows setting policies for single users...

I started playing with the rights in /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf
According to an other page I changed the settings for the "default" policy from
"deny" to "allow".
After that the Error had to be corrected with the line

below.

Cable and wireless-net working perfectly!

So one more Question: should I "allow" by "default" (security??) or for
single users?

PS: I am running Debian testing (pre - lenny)

[Bug 132359] arrow keys don't work with CTRL-SHIFT anymore when compiz 'normal effects' are enabled in Gutsy

2007-08-13 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

With 'normal desktop effects' enabled (the default in Gutsy tribe 4),
the arrow keys don't do anything in conjunction with CTRL-SHIFT anymore.

CTRL-SHIFT + an arrow normally selects text (eg one word at a time if
you use the left or right arrows).

This affects gedit, Firefox, etc.

[Bug 132241] Re: NVIDIA legacy drivers may show a blank screen on GeForce 4 MX440 chipsets

2007-08-13 Thread Sebastian Xavier
It's not exactly the same, since the windows always start black, even on
the first GL-app being run, and I don't use desktop effects. I'll do
some testing with the newer driver and different settings to see if the
workaround for that bug works here too. Maybe it's not getting any video
memory at all. (it's an onboard chipset)

[Bug 132357] files with unusual character sets are sometimes completely invisible to the driver

2007-08-13 Thread Andrew Gorcester
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ntfs-3g

When I boot my computer, files with Japanese characters in my NTFS
partition are simply not displayed through the ntfs-3g driver. They are
not shown in Nautilus, or on the command line, and the driver apparently
doesn't recognize that they exist at all. However, unmounting and
remounting manually makes them display properly.

The relevant line in my /etc/fstab is:

UUID=0A00172E00171FED /media/hdd1 ntfs-fusedefaults,uid=1000 0
0

The only possible explanation I can think of is that when I mount it
manually (sudo umount /media/hdd1; sudo mount /media/hdd1) this is
somehow different from what is done at boot.

[Bug 119457] Re: [gutsy] no LFE in hda-intel + sigmatel stac9200

2007-08-13 Thread Juan Pablo Salazar Bertín
Please at least set a milestone for this bug.
There are other things not working, like audio input, but I'm not sure if I
should file new audio related bugs before this one gets fixed.
Thanks.

[Bug 132106] Re: serial adapter gutsy

2007-08-13 Thread martinbures
Like I said, it worked on my Feisty desktop machine:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux martin-desktop 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

Here is the Gutsy macbook pro where it doesn't work:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux martin-laptop 2.6.22-9-generic #1 SMP Fri Aug 3 00:50:37 GMT 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

The adapter was plugged into both systems when I captured this
information. The device gets power over USB and does not light on the
Gutsy system. On the Feisty system, it hesitates for a second, the hard
drive spins and then the power light lights.

cheers.
martin.

2007-08-13 Thread Matthew Tighe
Public bug reported:

[Bug 61235] Re: USB mass storage stops working after a while

2007-08-13 Thread KEYofR
Awsome thanks for the more specific udev rule. That's ideal since it
would apply to any FreeAgentDesktop, which obviously they all have the
same problem.

Also, by now I think I can say the sdparm fix works.

Without rebooting I did the disconnect/reconnect I mentioned, then
manually did the sdparm command on /dev/sdh, then did a full system
rsync backup of about 300 gigs from a software sata raid0 array to the
FreeAgent, which is formatted ext2. I've also done other massive backups
to the device like pumping the output of star right to the raw device
treating it like a tape. To me that as good as proves I don't have a
"lots of traffic" problem.

Then the drive has been untouched for several hours after that backup
completed and now I just tried and it's up & working fine. To me that
says I no longer have the "drive turns off" problem.

So now I will test the allow_restart possible fix to allow the drive to
spin down and spin up gracefully instead of just forcing it to stay
spinning all the time. That, with the better udev rule would be the
ideal. This enclosure is not one you can swap out drive or fan without
basically destroying it, so best to just let it go idle as much as
possible.

Thanks again.

[Bug 132349] external usb disks no longer mount in gutsy

2007-08-13 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

After the latest Gutsy updates of 14/7/07, my external drives no longer
mount when inserted.

They are still visible in hal-device-manager and the debug log shows a
nm_hal_device_added() message for each device.

Trying to mount manually with

sudo gnome-mount -d

results in the error message 'You are not privileged to mount the volume
[volume name]'.

Trying to mount with

sudo gnome-mount -h

says there is probably no media in the drive.

Every six seconds, the daemon log shows the message:

[Bug 132350] Mozilla-thunderbird does not save drafts

2007-08-13 Thread Baruch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

When I save a message for later work (as a draft), that message is not
there when I return.

If I save a draft, and then go look in the draft folder right away, I
see the message in there. However, if I close out of thunderbird and
then come back to it, the message is no longer in the draft folder.

This is an IMAP account. Other changes I make (such as moving messages)
also appear not to take place, so this may be a more general problem
than just the draft folder. For example, if I delete a message from the
inbox, that message may reappear there the next time I run thunderbird.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat5.5

I have a clean Gutsy Tribe 4 installation. I installed Sun JDK 6, Eclipse,
Mysql 5 without errors.
Then, I tried install tomcat5.5, tomcat5.5-admin, tomcat5.5-webapps packages.
Synaptic could install these packs and theirs dependences. But, finishing, I
received a message error about tomcat5.5-admin.

Finally, I just reinstalled tomcat5.5-admin without problems.
