[Bug 134841] HP DeskJet F4140 All-in-One has wrong permissions on the USB scanner device

2007-08-25 Thread Rouslan Solomakhin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libsane

HP DeskJet F4140 is a new All-in-One (print, scan, copy) that is not in
sane's database yet. Sane works fine for root, but users in group
'scanner' cannot access the All-in-One scanner functionality. To fix
this, the following line needs to be added to
/etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules:

SYSFS{idVendor}=="03f0", SYSFS{idProduct}=="7e04", MODE="664",
GROUP="scanner"

[Bug 134840] Re: Ubuntu should open yelp at first boot after install

2007-08-25 Thread Sarah Hobbs
You can't be telling me that people actually *use* the guided start tour
in XP? Most people that I see using it only use the "close" button on
it.

I believe that help is already found on the first page of firefox,
anyway.

And not more popups. Popups are evil.

[Bug 81170] Re: [feisty] etodo conduit times out when syncing with a palm device

2007-08-25 Thread Heather Van Wilde
Same problem as before, but with a different twist:

Using Handspring Visor

All current updates to Feisty, Evo and gnome-pilot

With the eToDo conduit enabled to synchronize, it locks up just like
everyone else's does. However, I have no items in either the Evo
database or the Visor's, so it should just be seeing an empty database
and ignoring. On a side note, any idea why the eMemo conduit doesn't
show anything in evo?

[Bug 134840] Re: Ubuntu should open yelp at first boot after install

2007-08-25 Thread David Ross
I completely agree with Sarah Hobbs, nobody would use such a feature.
I'm a programmer and a computer technician, users complain about startup
windows which are bothersome especially at program startup. Most people
also don't like stupid tooltip boxes to appear on any program, those are
completely useless as well. People just want to use the computer, not go
through every on screen guided tour. Many of the older computer users
want a book over a help program on the computer.

Cyrille, you should help with an Ubuntu book and not waste people's time
with such a knowledgeable request.

[Bug 107518] Re: auto filesystem mounting can cause hideous data loss

2007-08-25 Thread Scott Balneaves
Well, USE_LOCAL_SWAP is now "no" by default. I think we should just
document that hideous data loss on sleeping machines is possible if you
change it from the default, which, really, is going to be a very small
subset of people using it.

Cheers,

I talk about opening it at the first boot only and the target is a person

So, how do you explain that every day, people come on IRC or forums asking

Yes, there is some people who don't have the reflex to search :/
The idea was to show that a good help is already in the system...

[Bug 134701] Re: [GUTSY] firefox crashed

2007-08-25 Thread Yannick
Wouhouuu, I did it :) It took me some time to figure out what I had to do, but

OK, here is the log you asked...I might have done it wrong, but now I
understood it, i can do it again :)

Also, ususally, firefox crash, but today, when trying to reproduce it, through
the "run" command with dbg, it froze, but didn't quit on itself. I had to close
it, then Confirm it, even though a window appear asking if I really wanted to
kill Firefox that was frozen.
==>In one word: the log might be wrong, because the effect of the bug were not
the same as usual ;)
But I could try to reproduce it the way it does outside the "run" command.

Thanks!

[Bug 134840] Re: Ubuntu should open yelp at first boot after install

Those people are the individuals who everyone constantly tells, "RTFM".
Those are the people who fail to read the main Ubuntu site and only
search for "download". I did say "most people", the people who do need
yelp is a very small percentage.

There are plenty of web sites made in Flash only(game sites, etc), why
aren't those sites have a site for disabled users under the ADA rules?
Those users are a very low percentage and not even worth the time.

[Bug 134846] akregator disables all video on Dell GX110

2007-08-25 Thread rashelleym
Public bug reported:

On my Dell GX110 Small Form Factor machine on 6.10 Dapper Drake, opening
a akregator feed in a tab in the internal browser that causes a notice
about "popup block options" has caused the same problem three times
(including once after the latest kdelib upgrade).

The problem is complete loss of onboard video, including consoles. (The
monitor has vertical bars, and then loses synch.) I can log in blindly
and sudo shutdown -r, though.

This seemed like an akregator issue, or possibly a quirk of the onboard
video. But I've had no other obvious problems with video, and I spotted
a word in syslog that seemed similar to something I saw in the
description of kdelib changes, something about "slaveio."

Here's the segment of syslog that seems relevant:

Aug 25 21:46:32 localhost -- MARK --
Aug 25 22:00:57 localhost gdm[4245]: Error reinitilizing server
Aug 25 22:01:02 localhost gdm[6109]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error

Aug 25 22:01:13 localhost gdm[6133]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error

XKeepsCrashing scr
ipt
Aug 25 22:01:18 localhost pppd[5045]: Modem hangup

Ideally, I think I'd like to adjust X files or something to be able to
access whatever debug information akregator offers when this happens.
Failing that, and assuming that X in theory might like to be configured
out of the box to account for as many contingencies as possible, this is
being submitted.

[Bug 126444] Re: [gutsy-tribe2] on tty0 fails to shut down ltsp thin clients

2007-08-25 Thread Scott Balneaves
This popped up the other day, and we talked about it quickly in #ubuntu-
devel.

The problem is due to the fact that the /etc/event.d/ctl-alt-delete file does a
full shutdown, which
does things like unmount nbd mounts before it's finished shutting down. Two
solutions exist:

1) Changing the shutdown -r call to a /sbin/reboot command, which was decided
was ickygross, and
against debian policy since it's a conffile, or
2) clean out all the shutdown scripts in /etc/rc*.d using update-rc.d tools.

ogra said he'd have a looksee. I think that should address the issue.

Cheers,
Scott

[Bug 134713] Re: Strange sound when booting Kubuntu 7.04

2007-08-25 Thread Ivan Pupák
Here is some additional information. In the last couple of hours I have
learned a little bit about systems logs. The missing codec information
mentioned above is exactly the following (from the kern.log file) :

hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC883, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

But this probably will not be it since the same message appears in all
logs since I installed Kubuntu, which was 15 Aug 2007 (it means that
this message was there even when the sound was NOT there.) Should
kern.log files be needed for further analysis I can provide them on
request.

BR,

Ivan

[Bug 134656] seahorse-0.9.7-0ubuntu1~dapper1 from dapper-backports make's Problem's on dapper

2007-08-25 Thread encbladexp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

After installing seahorse from dapper-backport's i got some Problems:
-SSH Wont work, no connect to other hosts, but if not starting a gnome session,
on the terminal i works for me
-Seahorse won't show my GPG Key's again
-Seahorse killed my gpg.conf, there are many Entries for agent's, but why?
After a downgrade to the dapper default version, an removing the lines the
orignial dapper version worked again!
-Seahorse-Prefences wont run

I think a Upgrade of the dapper-backports Version from 0.9.7 -> 0.9.9 or
higher should solve some problem's!

Take a look at:

[Bug 134662] very low sound with HDA Intel and analog device 1986

2007-08-25 Thread coincoin169
Public bug reported:

On the laptop ASUS A8JS :

"lspci" returns :
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)

"aplay -l" returns :
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: HDA Generic [HDA Generic]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

And "alsamixer" tells me :
Card: HDA Intel
Chip: Analog Devices ID 1986

On Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (7.04, kernel 2.6.20, alsa 1.0.13), the sound was perfect
with the line :
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file

But when upgraded to Gusty Gibbon Tribe CD 5 (7.10, kernel 2.6.22, alsa
1.0.14), the sound is very low and I have only two channels in
alsamixer. Even with "model=3stack" or by re-compiling the alsa-driver
version 1.0.14. I was unable to compile alsa-driver version 1.0.13.

Are you guys running the kernel you build alsa for?

[Bug 134667] missing firmware for epson, could maybe be included in non-free drivers

2007-08-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Public bug reported:

I've seen that the epkowa driver has been included in the
sane-backends-extras... That's good. The point is that some scanner (maybe all
?) need a firmware from epson. In my case, and I don't know if the same
firmware is needed by all, it is the one included in
iscan-plugin-gt-s600-2.0.0-1.c2.i386.rpm
 available from http://www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/dl_scan.html.
That's why I'm asking is there a possibility to package this firmware, like
other proprietary packages in ubuntu : to let the user install it easily by
clicking on proprietary driver in the corresponding menu from gnome or kde...

[Bug 134669] Unfortunate Selection of Primary Display

2007-08-25 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Gutsy Tribe 5, on a Dell Latitude X1 (i915GMS) with a Dell 2405FPW
connected to the VGA port:

$ xrandr
VGA connected 1920x1200+0+0 [... this is my external Dell 2405 FPW ...]
   [...]
LVDS connected 1280x768+0+0 [... this is the internal display on my Notebook
...]
   [...]

I suspect the ordering of this randr 1.2 query results is responsible
for Ubuntu to treat the external display as primary. This is leads to
some problems, mainly having important use interface elements (popups,
gdm login, taskbar) unaccessible if your screen is connected but not
switched on.

I'd like to propose that in typical "laptop+external monitor"
configurations, the internal display of the laptop should always be
primary (and listed first in enumerations).

[Bug 134616] Re: [gutsy] image viewer slow to start

2007-08-25 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thanks for your comments. This does not appear to be a bug report as
such. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make
more sense to raise your question in the support tracker.

@ChrisC: That is only because in the meanwhile this bug has been
addressed and fixed by the Banshee developers upstream, so syncing to
the newer release would let us have the fix, as in fact it did.

source that file from the initscript and exit if the variable is set.

[Bug 134671] CUPS/PDF_file_generator fails the 2nd time

2007-08-25 Thread Nicklas Larsson
Public bug reported:

Version information: Gutsy tribe 5 (2007-08-25)

How to reproduce:

1. Make sure that the CUPS/PDF_file_generator is used for printing.
2. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com (I used Firefox)
3. Print with CUPS/PDF_file_generator.
4. Check the PDF catalog, a file Ubuntu_Home_Page___Ubuntu.pdf is created.
5. Print the page again.
6. Check the PDF catalog, the last print doesn't end up here as a pdf.

What I think is happening:

The problem seems to be that if the title is the same, the same name
will be used for file generation. If a file name is already exists in
the PDF catalog, the printing fails silently.

A similar problem happens when printing from Evince. However, here the
problem is even worse. When printing from Evince, a file named evince-
print.pdf is created, and the 2nd document you try to print will use the
same name, and therefore fail silently.

How serious I think the bug is:

This bug needs to be fixed before Ubuntu 7.10 is released. The
alternative is to remove this particular feature before release. (and,
no, I don't want that, it is a really important feature)

[Bug 63544] Re: Volume control key controls speaker & not headphones

2007-08-25 Thread Sebastien Bacher
The bug system should not be used as a support tracker, it's meant to
describe clearly bugs and suggest what to do. This bug has turned to a
debug session with no clear description and several screens of comment,
that's not managable and that's one of the reasons why it's closed. If
you have a clear description of the issue and how to trigger it feel
free to open a new bug

[Bug 134673] displayconfig-gtk should allow to change gamma settings

2007-08-25 Thread Matteo Settenvini
Public bug reported:

displayconfig-gtk should allow to change monitor gamma settings,
probably by interfacing with "xgamma". Three sliders, by default linked
so they move together like most of The GIMP spinboxes, should enable
setting red, green and blue gamma correction.

UI proposal:

Gamma correction:
R [--|--] --+
G [--|--] --8
B [--|--] --+

Where the "8" is a chain like The GIMP ones.

[Bug 134672] installing Firefox plugins from add/remove applications doesn't work

2007-08-25 Thread Oren Barnea
Public bug reported:

I'm using Gutsy and I updated my system about 30 minutes ago.
I read on the Tribe 5 release notes about the option to install Firefox plugins
from the add/remove application. I tried to install the Launchpad integration
plugin when Firefox was running, expecting to be asked to restart it, but I
just got a message saying the plugin was installed. I checked on Firefox but
didn't see this plugin on the Addons list. I restarted Firefox and it still
wasn't there. I closed Firefox and removed the plugin from Add/remove
applications, re-installed it, but it's still not there.
I checked if the Add/remove app works at all by installing Dia, which worked
perfectly. Then I checked if the plugin was installed by mistake on Gran
Paradiso, but it's not there either.
