[Bug 147096] ndiswrapper wpa2 eap-tls does not work

2007-09-29 Thread Robert Annessi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-16-386

Using feisty fawn on a MSI S270 laptop (the one with the AMD Turion cpu) I got
a problem with the wireless lan network card (02:09.0 Ethernet controller:
Linksys, A Division of Cisco Systems [AirConn] INPROCOMM IPN 2220 Wireless LAN
Adapter (rev 01)) using ndiswrapper (1.38 from the feisty repository):
wpa2 psk works. wpa2 eap-tls fails during ie 3/4 authentication but it works
with the vanilla ndiswrapper (1.38).
The vanilla version does not compile with USE_OWN_WQ (called
CONFIG_NDISWRAPPER_WQ in the ubuntu kernel). If I compile the vanilla version
with USE_OWN_WQ it fails the same way.
Is there a special reason ubuntu does not use the default ndiswrapper compile
options? It would be very nice if the ubuntu kernel worked ootb on this machine.

[Bug 147094] Gusty: ext3 partition appear to be full

2007-09-29 Thread Fel
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Feisty to Gusty a 2 of my ext3 partitions look like
there is no free space in there. Even my 17.7 GB root partition looks
like it has only 764Mb of free space while I did not copy anything huge
there. I guess this issue will make me switch back to Feisty. Yet I am
not sure this will help with the ext3 partitions.

[Bug 147092] [RFE] Keyboard > Typing Breaks should have both breaks and micropauses

2007-09-29 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I think that the typing breaks feature in Gnome should allow the user to
set up micropauses and typing breaks.

Other RSI/OOS prevention tools (for example, Workpace) suggest a
micropause of 10 seconds every, say, 3 minutes and then a Rest Break of
5 mins or more every, say, half an hour. Incidentally, Workpace suggests
exercises during these Rest Breaks.

I suffer from RSI quite badly and I find that regular micropauses make a
much bigger difference than the longer breaks. I believe that is true
for a lot of people, but I cannot point to any research on it; it is
certainly what we are told by our office OOS prevention person.

An easy way to provide this feature would be to repeat the same options
that we currently have, so that the tab read:

Lock Screen to enforce typing breaks:
[ X ] Micropause of [10] seconds every [3] minutes
[ X ] Rest break of [5] minutes every [15] minutes (this is what we already
have)

At a later stage, it would be great to have exercise suggestions during
those breaks, but that is a different, long-term feature request.

This really belongs upstream, but I can't find my Gnome Bugzilla details
at the moment.

give similar symptoms as mine was definitely a compiz problem.

[Bug 117246] fixed! for Nvidia MCP51 hda with Sigmatel STAC 9200 chip

2007-09-29 Thread aggieml
I finally got my sound working after a month of searching various posts!

I have the NVidia MCP51 High Definition Audio with the Sigmatel STAC
9200 chip on it. It came with my Gateway MT3421 laptop.

I had given up on sound because everyone on forums had given up, but
there's a patch for fixing this sound card on the alsa-bugs site!

Just go here and look for the post with the patch and follow the instructions:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=868053

A couple things:
1...you don't have to remove all alsa packages like he said in step 1. All I
did was remove alsa-lib and alsa-utils.
2...the patch file is at the bottom of the post as an attachment.

I hope this works for some of you!

[Bug 122325] Re: package sun-java6-bin 6-00-2ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2007-09-29 Thread Kit
This failure also can be caused by misleading license agreement (DJL).
In my case, while installing sun-java6-jre, I've been gracefully asked
to accept the license agreement. I've pressed "next" without scrolling
through the agreement (not really interested in, as I've a home use
installation) - and received bunch of error messages, that drove me
here.

To get things running, one needs to scroll down through license
agreement and tick the box "I Agree".

Hope that helps some guys that get here by the same cause :)

Please note that before upgrading to Gusty this worked stable and I did not

[Bug 72609] Re: K3b temporarily ejects disk before verification

2007-09-29 Thread hasi
I can confirm this problem for Kubuntu 7.04 on a Dell Latitude D620 Notebook.
I find something I haven't seen reported in the previous postings: after the
disk is finished, I get a window that asks me whether I want to re-load the
disk. If I close in the CD tray manually and hit the load button, the
verification kicks in normally. The problem is that this has to happen within a
few seconds, otherwise K3b reports an error ("No files to verify found on
disk", or similar).
I would be perfectly happy if that there was no time out, but K3b would wait
for a manual decision from the user: whether to load the CD for verification or
whether to cancel and skip verification. This should be fairly simple to
implement.
Just my 2 cents.

[Bug 147078] Re: [gusty] Syntax Highlighting tab is no longer present in the preferences dialogue

2007-09-29 Thread GabrielGrant
Apparently what I have called a "bug" is in fact a "feature".

According to http://www.gnome.org/start/2.20/notes/en/index.html
#rnusers-gedit, the color schemes are actually for syntax highlighting,
not for the user interface as I implied. However, I still have yet to
find any mechanism for editing or creating new color schemes so that
they will take account of new .lang files.

As an example I have attached a custom .lang file, which works perfectly
in Feisty, but in Gusty only highlights comments, since the other styles
default to no special formatting. Note that the .lang file does validate
against language.rng from gtksourceview-1.0

[Bug 147084] Does not check for actual blacklist.save file name is actually blacklist.save and not blacklist.save.1 or similiar and uses that instead

2007-09-29 Thread nowshining
Public bug reported:

I was trying to disable modules I didn't need and after awhile and
several reboots I made a mistake and my usb mouse didn't work - removed
everything out of blacklist - and even linux modules common and it still
wouldn't work - however upon rebooting with the .11 kernel everything
worked fine..

Then later while re-browsing the modprobe.d folder I noticed something
that was there and it was a file named blacklist.save.1 file with the
old blacklists I was working on and must of mistakenly saved instead
with the nano command line editor and such , well lo and behold I
removed the file - rebooted into the .12 kernel and all is well - my usb
mouse is working. I believe this is a bug because with that file the
2.6.22.11 kernel worked fine. :)

[Bug 147081] movie player distorts image horizontally

2007-09-29 Thread Dan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I'm using Gutsy with Totem 2.20.0 and gstreamer 0.10.14.
No matter what video file I try to play, the image is shown in a distorted way,
so that it is square and people in movies look like eggheads.
I tried using totem-xine instead of totem-gstreamer, but that just makes it
worse,
so that the videos are even more horizontally compressed and only about 2cm
wide.
The same files play fine with Feisty's Totem, in Media Player Classic under

[Bug 147080] do-release-upgrade should make disabling third party repositories optional

2007-09-29 Thread Loye Young
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager-core

Currently, do-release-upgrade will automatically disable third party
repositories that it finds in /etc/apt/sources.list.

Better behavior is to ask the system admin what it should do.

Use case: I use apt-mirror to maintain a local mirror of Ubuntu
repositories, in order to minimize my own bandwidth usage and to relieve
strain on Ubuntu servers. Current behavior does not allow me to use the
local network mirror, but instead sends me to archive.ubuntu.com.

Reasons:
1. As Ubuntu grows, demands on its servers will grow; local admins should have
the option to point to other mirrors if they are confident of the currency of
the mirror.
2. It is much, much faster to upgrade over a local network than to retrieve
all the files over the network -- on the order of 10 to 15 times faster using
100 Mb Ethernet and 100 times faster on Gb Ethernet. If the admin has a
non-trivial number of computers to upgrade, the admin will definitely want to
use a local mirror.
3. Enterprise customers will likely want to fine-tune their upgrade paths to
meet organizational requirements. The customer should have that option.

Happy Trails,

2007-09-29 Thread _dan_
Public bug reported:

I got a Sony Vaio Laptop:

Manufacturer: Sony Corporation

Product Name: VGN-FS315H

Version: C300NCFA

With 2.6.22-12-generic kernel, setting brightness via the gnome brightness
applet does not work, nor does the power management dimming work when
unplugging it from cable.
This is nothing new since it never worked, the new thing is that it works
perfectly with the -386 kernel.

The fn keys are not working in either kernel but i think that has been
reported very often already.

[Bug 147078] [gusty] Syntax Highlighting tab is no longer present in the preferences dialogue

2007-09-29 Thread GabrielGrant
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Opening the gedit Preferences dialogue (Edit->Preferences) no long has a
tab for Syntax Highlighting as it does in Feisty. While the
"Fonts&Colours" tab now has "Color Schemes", there does not appear to be
any way to remap color preferences for Syntax Highlighting. The result
is that if a custom .lang file is installed, there is no way to enable
it to actually produce highlighting (since new styles default to no
highlighting).

This is in contrast to the clear method of changing highlighting
preferences in the Feisty version (gedit 2.18.1).

It seems that this change occurred with the updates on 2007-08-01:

gedit (2.19.3-0ubuntu1) gutsy; urgency=low

  * New upstream release:
- New Features and Fixes
  - Remove color settings and syntax highlighting editor from the
preferences dialog and use a style scheme selector

Removing the color settings was the correct thing to do, as the Color
Scheme selector replaced that, but the Color Schemes do not seem to
provide any mechanism for editing syntax highlighting preferences, and
so I don't believe the syntax highlighting editor should have been
removed.

Additionally, the documentation still refers to the syntax highlighting
editor within the "Preferences" section of the help. (It also refers to
the Color preferences as opposed to themes, which should presumably be
changed)

Thanks!
-Gabriel

[Bug 140713] Re: Gutsy Tribe 5 (KVM GUEST) needs -no-kvm to install

2007-09-29 Thread Anthony Liguori
Attached is a patch that fixes the problem with gfxboot. Below is a
link to the KVM bugzilla entry that has a more in-depth explaination of
the problem[1]. There's another bug in KVM that makes the install
screen black[2] but that should get fixed real soon. I have a really
bad hack in the bug entry that lets the graphics show up. Using a
remastered Gutsy install CD with my gfxboot patch and a patched KVM with
my VGA update hack, I can boot a Gutsy install CD on my VT laptop. I'm
submitting this patch to upstream gfxboot too. Hopefully this patch can
be applied to the Gutsy gfxboot package before Gutsy is released.

[Bug 147075] gnome-compiz-manager unresponsive - doesn't accept changes

2007-09-29 Thread M
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-compiz-manager

Upon installing and running gnome-compiz-manager
(System->Preferences->GL Desktop), several (roughly 3) windows are
spawned asking me if I want to "Keep" or "Use Previous" settings,
although I haven't changed anything yet. When I do change settings,
nothing happens, they are not applied unless I quite GL Desktop and
restart it - and even if I do, generally the workspace options do not
work. By this I mean that the workspace cannot be switched by using
CTRL-ALT-arrow as before. Without gnome-compiz-manager installed,
though, I can't even change the number of desktops in my workplace
switcher.

After installing and then removing gnome-compiz-manager, I finally get
the desired result of being able to change the number of workspaces.

Here is my machine's responses to these commands:

* Which graphics card are you using: ATI, Nvidia or Intel?
  Code:

  egrep 'Composite|Section\ \"Device' /etc/X11/xorg.conf -A 10

* Is my OpenGL running?
  Code:

  glxinfo | egrep 'OpenGL|direct'

* (Intel and Nvidia only) Is AIGLX enabled?
  Code:

  grep AIGLX /var/log/Xorg.*.log

* Which version of Compiz am I running?

[Bug 125832] Re: [gutsy] orinoco_cs.ko missing

Bill,

What kind of wireless card do you have? If it's not being seen at all,

[Bug 147073] xrandr causes temporary blanking of external output

2007-09-29 Thread Jeremy Nickurak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Running xrandr with no parameters to get a list of valid resolutions (or
indeed running a program like totem, or even totem's mozilla plugin),
the external VGA monitor is momentarilly blanked out. After a moment or
so, the screen is restored with no changes. My monitor however seems to
take its time adjusting to this, and about 5 seconds later reappears
with the "analog signal detected" on-screen display on for a moment.
This is precisely the same symptom the monitor exhibits by being
momentarilly unplugged from the VGA output and plugged back in.

This is on a Intel GMA945:
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.1-0ubuntu3 from ubuntu gutsy.

[Bug 72886] Re: Burning CD/DVD, starvation, doesn't use burn-proof

2007-09-29 Thread Peter Cordes
newegg doesn't sell that item number anymore. Better to give a model
number.

Have you had this happen with CDs and DVDs? I thought DVDs were
smarter about recovering, and were supposed to be able to. It didn't
take a special feature like "burn proof".

I'm not sure if I've ever had a buffer underrun while burning, but I
think so, and my discs come out ok. (I've sometimes seen single-bit
errors on them, though, which is why I always make par2 files to put on
the disc with the files. This is easy if its a few big files, which is
what I'm always burning.)

[Bug 147068] xorg 7.2 or 915 resolution crashing on logout

2007-09-29 Thread Dan Gilliam
Public bug reported:

Distro: Gutsy Gibbon, Beta

On a fresh install, once out of about 3 times, either Xorg 7.2 or 915
resolution is crashing on logout (I've seen this in other distros as
well, the bug seems to be an intel 915 problem more than anything).
This crash freezes the whole system hard, requiring a hard shutdown. I
don't know what logs might be helpful, if there are any anyway.

One thing, when it crashes, it simply goes to a screen of garbage
(colored blocks), and that's that. Total system lockup. I've seen this
in sidux before, as well, and was directed to xorg's bug pages, where it
seems to be a 915resolution problem.

[Bug 110484] Re: k3b causes system freeze

2007-09-29 Thread Peter Cordes
I also have a DG965WH motherboard (and a Pioneer DVR-111D, firmware
1.29). It uses the Intel g965 chipset, which doesn't include any IDE
ports. The board has a Marvell IDE controller chip, which is driven by
the pata_marvell kernel module. This is a relatively new driver in the
kernel, and I think not totally bug-free yet. e.g. running AMD64 Feisty
with the stock kernel, my system would lock up if k3b was running while
I closed the tray with a blank dvd-r (or was it +r) in it.

I'm currently running Gutsy's kernel (and the latest git versions of
DRM and mesa for better g965 support; I made a script to download and
hack linux-headers...-generic so they don't depend on gutsy's libc,
because the headers themselves don't. I guess some of the shipped progs
in /usr/src/.../scripts do. BTW, Gutsy's xorg isn't a big improvement
for opengl performance or stability if you were using Feisty with mesa
from git. They still haven't fixed the tearing (no vsync). I think
Feisty's mesa still crashed sometimes on g965, though, and gutsy's mesa
is newer and better.)

Anyway, I can burn DVDs all day without any problems, and the crash
while k3b recognized a freshly inserted disc doesn't happen anymore. (I
used to have to quit k3b, load a disc, and run it again.)

So some people's lockups might be the fault of their PATA driver. Try
a newer kernel if you have a motherboard with an Intel 965 chipset and a
funky PATA controller. BTW, SATA burners are not much more expensive
these days, if you're in the market for a new one anyway.

Usually system lockups are not directly k3b's fault. Locking up the
whole system requires messing with hardware (usually), so it's more
often a driver or the X server or something else that directly controls
hardware that needs to be fixed. Or other software can avoid doing
whatever makes the driver cause a lockup.

[Bug 147065] AMD/ATI SB700 should support two IDE channels

2007-09-29 Thread Shane Huang
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source

SB700 supports one physical IDE channel, but SB700 SATA controller
supports combined mode. When the SATA combined mode is enabled,
two SATA ports(port4 and port5) share one IDE channel from IDE
controller, and PATA will share the other IDE channel.

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=6c6a2a8d201b4f8fd54167802da5ddbe08abd744
Our previous patch above adding SB700 IDE device ID only support one
IDE channel, which contains bug. The attached patch fix the bug.

I have sent the patch to the linux kernel IDE maintainer, and will
post the upstream commit here when I get it.

Thanks

[Bug 147064] kaffeine does not start

2007-09-29 Thread Henry de Valence
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kaffeine

I'm running Kubuntu Gutsy. When I first tried to open a video file out of
dolphin, it changed to the loading cursor and hung for about 2 mins, and then
went away. Then I tried running it from a console with --verbose, but nothing
was printed to the screen. I usually get an X Error: BadDevice, invalid or
uninitialized input device 171 whenever I start a GUI app, but that didn't
happen this time.
The output of ls -l `which kaffeine` is "-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1366512
2007-07-30 08:19 /usr/bin/kaffeine" so that appears to be fine..

[Bug 135124] Re: HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop hangs on boot unless noapic is used

2007-09-29 Thread Paul Shiryaev
Having same problem with Gutsy Gibbon Beta live CD on HP Pavilion dv9000
(AMD Turion TL-56 64-bit).

Was able to run a live CD using 'Safe mode'. However, the installation
wizard frozen up at 15%. Using 'noapic nosmp' boot options (see Bug
#89746) was able to install and run Ubuntu finally. It seems that only
HP Pavilion users are having this problem.

I hope this bug will be fixed before the new release.

[Bug 147063] out of space -> useless distro

2007-09-29 Thread Varreon
Public bug reported:

On Xubuntu:

Using Deluge bittorrent, I noticed that it stopped downloading, and all
other apps seemed to stop functioning. I attempted to fix it with a Ctrl
+ Alt + Backspace, when it alerted me that It can't log in, possibly
full disk.

So I restarted into repair mode, deleted some of my documents, and
rebooted.

Maybe the Kernel should watch for over-filling the disk???
Maybe its just Deluge???

[Bug 115616] Re: Device-mapper errors: dm-linear, lookup failed

2007-09-29 Thread Tan Kah Ping
I also have this issue but would like to add one more thing: Compiz
didn't run for me. Even manually enabling it I get an error saying
Compiz can't start.

After removing evms last night, this morning when I tried enabling
Compiz again, it worked fine this time. Normal & Extra visual effects
work. I didn't test customising yet though.

[Bug 131983] Re: [gutsy] trackerd kills disk io

2007-09-29 Thread Avery Fay
I just tried the new version and it's definitely much improved although
I have to say I'm still not entirely satisfied. The initial scan still
takes a long time and still slows down my machine incredibly (apt-get
install sysutils took around one minute). This time though the period of
slowness only lasted about 1:15:00 instead of more than a day.

Here's a question though: why can't the initial scan just be scheduled
with cron for the middle of the night or something? (or look at when
updatedb is scheduled for and use that in case a user has changed it)

Basically, I'm concerned because performance still sucks during the
initial scan and while it's faster overall, this is going to be the
user's first impression of gutsy. I think simply delaying the scan will
go a long way.
