[Bug 150844] attemping to run purple-remote recommends wrong package

When libpurple-bin is not installed, typing

[Bug 145318] Re: evolution crashes on vcs/ics import with "umlauts"

2007-10-08 Thread PhilChip
I know, as I mentioned in my last post, evolution isn't responding
anymore (it freezes) after importing the appointment directly. When I
save the file and import it from file it works without a problem.

I also tried to import an ics mail without german "umlauts" with the
same negative result.

The case title I chose is maybe not right anymore. Maybe it would be
better to rename this case into something like this: evolution freezes
after "direct" vcs/ics import

[Bug 150842] [Gutsy] System Monitor searching for a process doesn't work ok

2007-10-08 Thread tsunamo
Public bug reported:

When I'm using System Monitor to search for a process, and I write the
first character (I just write it, because at the bottom of the window
the search box appears), it doesn't find the name of the process, most
times it "finds" the first process in the list, or it finds another one,
but none of those 2 start by that character. However, when I insert 2
chars it finds the process that I was looking for, but sometimes I need
3 chars.

Thanks in advice,

[Bug 150839] kernel hangs when initializing network bridge

2007-10-08 Thread Ian Jessen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-13-generic

I'm experiencing hard hangups when configuring a network bridge between
my wired and wireless NICs. The hang occurs either during the boot or
on a reconfiguration once running. The kernel crashes hard - no
response to SysRq magic, no flashing panic lights, no crash logs. The
wireless driver is madwifi from linux-restricted-modules and the wired
driver is sky2. I have bridge-utils 1.2build1 installed. There is no
hang when I boot the 2.6.20-16-lowlatency kernel I have left over from
Feisty - hence why I'm blaming the kernel package.

[Bug 150419] Re: ltsp-build-client fails with "debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Passthrough"

2007-10-08 Thread Tom Haddon
Also, I don't know if this is in any way related, but for some reason I
get the kubuntu usplash and login screen (I doubt it's related, but
seems kind of non-standard)

I tried changing this by dropping into the chroot, changing
/etc/alternatives/ldm-theme to point to /usr/share/ldm/themes/ubuntu and
/etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so to point to /usr/lib/usplash
/usplash-theme-ubuntu.so. I then ran update-initramfs. This seemed to
give me the standard ubuntu splash screen, but still the kubuntu ldm
theme. I then copied the background I wanted into all of the
/opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ldm/theme subdirectories, but still came up
with the ldm-theme. I also tried doing dpkg --list | grep kubuntu from
within the chroot and saw that kubuntu-artwork-usplash was installed. I
uninstalled it, but it still shows the kubuntu ldm theme.

Am I missing something to update the ldm-theme?

[Bug 150833] readline no longer handles 8 bit character

2007-10-08 Thread AlainKnaff
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libreadline5

Since recently (5.2-3build1), several readline-using applications, such
as bash and zsh no longer handle 8-bit characters (such as é or ö).
Entering such a character just rings the terminal bell.

It's indeed tied to the shell, and not the terminal, as other terminal
applications such as vi, cat or hexdump do just fine. Even /bin/sh
(which does not use readline) does fine.

It was caused by using "reboot", while bash was hanging quite strangely before.

Also, I have apport disabled already on the server, because I was

apport hooking all resources (bug 119622).

Thanks for your feedback. I'll remember this bugreport, if this should

[Bug 128666] Re: kde-guidance-powermanager causes double sleep, memory corruption

2007-10-08 Thread Premier
I have a similar problem with kpowersave (actually, I was running
guidance simultaniously). I have a modified sleep.sh script that may or
may not be helpful (please use at your own risk.) This is for gutsy.
Basically, it checks for a file called "suspend_lock". If the file does
not exist, it creates it and then suspends. After it resumes, it
deletes the file. This should prevent double suspends almost all of the
times, but no guarentees. I have only tried this once on one computer
with one version of ubuntu (gutsy).

Place this attachment in /etc/acpi/sleep.sh (overwrite the existing
file.)

[Bug 95210] Re: Can't access to TTY- init /etc/event.id/tty1:16: Unknown stanza

2007-10-08 Thread Taupter
I still have problems here with it (Kubuntu Gutsy on ia32, updated from Feisty,
up-to-date as of 9th October 2007).
When I switch to tty*, there's a black screen with a white blinking cursor with
no login messages at all. When I use Magic SysRq keys no message is printed on
screen. I'm still able to switch to X after that.
The funny part is I'm able to log in in tty1-6, despite having no visual clues
about it, and being able to run programs (I logged as root and ran "startx --
:1" and a new X desktop.).

There's a sample of a /etc/event.d/tty* file:
# tty1 - getty
#
# This service maintains a getty on tty1 from the point the system is
# started until it is shut down again.

start on runlevel 2
start on runlevel 3
start on runlevel 4
start on runlevel 5

stop on runlevel 0
stop on runlevel 1
stop on runlevel 6

respawn
exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty1

[Bug 139468] Re: [gutsy] Totem fullscreen changes monitor refresh rate

2007-10-08 Thread fstafforini
I confirm this bug, using totem 2.20 with gstreamer 0.10.14.
Refresh rate allways switches to 60hz on fullscreen toggle (moreover 60hz is
broken for me due to some bug with xorg intel drivers: the display is squashed
to the right 3/4 of the screen at 60hz, producing a distorted image; works fine
at 75hz) - so there is no way of seeing fullscreen movies at any refresh rate
other than 60Hz, apart from the obvious remark that totem shouldn't be causing
this.

Higher level metapackages, such as those for desktop environments, can
depend on this package and simplify their dependencies.
 .
It should be noted that a package providing x-window-manager should also

[Bug 150822] Sendsigs.omit is set for mkfs.ntfs-3g as opposed to mkfs.ntfs

2007-10-08 Thread Agostino Russo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: partman-auto-loop

autopartition-loop should set

if [ -d /var/run ]; then
pidof /sbin/mount.ntfs >> /var/run/sendsigs.omit
pidof /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g >> /var/run/sendsigs.omit
fi

In fact it is probably more appropriate to set sendsigs.omit as soon as
ntfs-3g is used, since, for instance, a user might get out of ubiquity
before the autopartition-loop code is executed and that will create a
reboot problem.

I have therefore added sendsig code to lupin: https://code.launchpad.net

[Bug 150823] 1920x1200 resolution fails on HP LP2465 / NVidia GForce7 when correct monitor is selected.

2007-10-08 Thread Jeff May
Public bug reported:

Monitor: HP LP2465 DVI input.
Graphics Card: NVidia GForce7
Driver: NVidia Restricted Latest Graphics

- New installation of Gusty Beta on Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe MB / AMD 3800+ Dual
Core / 2G Mem NVidia GForce PCI Express Graphics.
- Kernel 2.6.22-13-generic
- xserver-xorg 1:7.2-5ubuntu12

- After installation updated all packages from standard repositories.
- Enabled NVidia restricted drivers and rebooted.
- System came up, resolution was correct but V Freq was not (Supported
resolution for this monitor is 1920 x 1200 @ 60HZ)
- Only available refresh was 50 Hz
- Monitor type showed "Custom1" - selected HP LP2465 monitor.
- After reboot resolution was set to 1920 x 1400 (overscan) at 50HZ.
- No 60Hz option available.
- Set resolution back to 1920 x 1200 and rebooted
- System came back up at 1920 x 1400. Would not accept change to 1920 x 1200
- Uninstalled restricted driver and rebooted.
- Reinstalled restricted driver and rebooted.
- System came back up at 1920 x 1200 @ 50 Hz on "Custom1" monitor.

Not a serious problem as monitor is working and refresh rate does not seem to
be an issue, but can not be set to correct monitor type / refresh rate.
Potentially related to other reported issues with 2.6.22-12 and 2.6.22-13
kernels.

[Bug 106621] Re: Gnome Trash doesn't show deleted files on ntfs-3g partitions

2007-10-08 Thread phazei
I have the same problem.

I just deleted an item on my ntfs partition. I made a mistake and went
to find it but couldn't find it anywhere. Finally i found this bug
report and found it in .Trash-$user on the ntfs partition.

Was not listed in normal trash at all.

Now that ntfs-3g is by defaul in gutsy, I would say it will be *very*
common.

I've no clue what reports I could post to assist. If someone lets me
know, I'll try.

[Bug 150783] Re: bug or feature request - kernel: Removing modules do not turn off devices

kernel 2.6.22-13.
I think any recent kernels have that option.
The modules involved are those related with rt2570 legacy usb wireless drivers
or ndiswrapper+rt2500usb, at least.

BTW, my ASUS wl-167g USB does not work with rt2x00usb drivers. It works
with rt2570 legacy (cvs) and with ndiswrapper. I'll wait for newer
rt2x00 versions before filing a new bug.

[Bug 150819] wrong time zone for the Canary Islands

What I have to inform you is not exactly a bug, just a "mistake". The time zone

[Bug 150817] nautilus preview continously launches gnome-video-thumbnailer on downloading videos

2007-10-08 Thread Mike Fedyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Seen in: Dapper, Feisty, Gutsy. I started with Dapper (Moved from
Debian) and avoided Edgy.

Laptop: It will drain the battery, spin up the fans, etc.

In this specific case, I noticed it because I need about 90% of my P3
933Mhz system to watch some higher resolution videos with vlc or totem
and had several second video skips (even though gnome-video-thumbnailer
is niced) when watching a video.

Interim solution: Switch to a different directory that doesn't have
downloading videos. This won't help if you happen to be downloading the
video to the desktop though.

Proposed solution: If a file has been modified previously in the last N
seconds and has been modified again, do not attempt to thumbnail the
file.

[Bug 150815] save-as PDF produces human readable but not machine readable PDFs

2007-10-08 Thread Mike Gratton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: abiword

To reproduce:

1. Create new document in Abi, type something like "test" as save the document
as a pdf
2. Open the document in a PDF reader (eg, evince), copy the text to the
clipboard
3 Paste the clipboard somewhere

Actual results:

The pasted text is some string that was not what was entered into the
document or displayed in the PDF.

Expected resulst:

The pasted text is the same string what was entered.

Reproducable: every time.

This seems to be a bug in Abiword as if I open for example the same MS
Word document and save as a PDF (this is my main use case for this
feature), OO.o saves it correctly while Abi does not. It's not a problem
with importing the MS Word document itself however, as the steps to
reproduce above illustrate.

I'll file this upstream as soon as the send me my bugzilla account
details.

[Bug 144314] Re: Cannot change "Focus & Raise Behaviour" general options

2007-10-08 Thread elyk
I can confirm this bug still exists. In the Shift Switcher plugin, I have been
unable to remove keyboard shortcuts. Also, when I try to disable "unredirect
fullscreen windows", the box becomes checked again within a few seconds. This
occurs whether I actually uncheck the box or click the "revert to defaults"
button. In both cases I have been able to achieve the desired functionality by
directly modifying the settings in gconf, and the modified setting will show in
ccsm, but any changes made are "one way". I have not noticed any unusual
highlighting however.
This is the same version of ccsm as the original report.

[Bug 89530] Re: Crashes during camera browse for Canon Powershot SD-300

2007-10-08 Thread dondad
Had a problem that seems similar. I have a Powershot A610. I downloaded
a picture and then tried to delete the picture from the camera. When I
did that, the application crashed. I tried to send a bug report with the
crash reporting tool that comes up, but it hung up and quit responding.
I can attach the crash files if someone can tell me where to find them.

[Bug 64173] Re: Wireless network keeps reconnecting (ubuntu edgy)

2007-10-08 Thread tvst
I've had the same problem for a long time now (since edgy, maybe before)
but I believe I managed to find a temporary solution. Before I go on, I
must say that NetworkManager 0.6.5 **did not** fix the issue for me.

But then I noticed that my logs always mentioned something about IPv6
near the place where the re-connects were occurring. So I decided to try
turning off IPv6 by editing /etc/modprobe.d/aliases, changing the
line...

alias net-pf-10 ipv6

...to...

alias net-pf-10 off ipv6

...then I restarted the computer.

It's been running fine for 2 days now. Given that the re-connects used
to happen every 15 minutes or so, it appears that it's all fixed now.

Ew. Those both look like nasty kernel limitations when writing to a
file in a scattered fashion.

I guess this is also why producing multiple smaller index files, then
having a merge-fest to make the large index file when it's all done,
is faster than writing everything to one hash index as you go. That
would naturally decrease the _size_ of seeks and hence seek time, as
smaller files span less of the disk.

Coming back to this:

> Trackers indexer is a hash table so words are written at random
> locations - its not possible to write more than one word at a time nor
> do we know whether certain words are stored sequentially as a result.

That doesn't seem like a good way to write an index. I'll try to put
together a different idea. (I've thought a lot about indexes for
databases: I'm thinking of writing yet another database engine).

You've found that SQLite doesn't perform too well without
index-merging, and neither does the other db you tried.

But a _good_ database implementation obviously should perform better
writing everything to one big file, instead of to multiple smaller
files in sequence then merging them.

Think about it: a good database would do the optimisation you're doing
automatically, because it's quite a common requirement (and benchmark)
in databases to load loads of data with randomly ordered index keys.

The only different would be it would hide the "smaller files" as
allocated zones inside a single big file that it's apparently using.
That bigger file's size would grow in steps. The disk seeking and I/O
would still have similar properties.

There's quite a few different algorithms,to make the index (in a
general database engine) be always accessible while it grows, despite
the internal periodic reorganisation, and to keep the reorganisation
efficient with disk seeks.

One way is to store the index as two tables internally: one B-tree,
and one sequential table (because reads can easily check both), and
write updates (in your case, each new "word") fairly sequentially up
to a certain amount, as write-ahead logging, then periodically merging
the log into the main B-tree using a batched method. If two logs are
permitted, one being merged and one being written, writing doesn't
have to stall during merging.

(Aside:
=> I know for a fact that several databases do this, retain a
separate sequential index and B-tree index, when there's a
 constant stream of updates.

You might find PostgreSQL, some MySQL backend, Firebird, or
Oracle's version of Berkeley DB (see oracle.com - it's still the
BSD license) actually performs better than anything you've tried
so far for these reasons. Don't assume a separate SQL server
process means slow, as disk seeking is slower :-) Have you tried
an SQL DB, or Oracle/non-Oracle Berkeley DB? I can't offer
advice, as I don't actually use these things myself much, other
than consider trying them, and try Oracle's Berkeley DB first
because the API is so similar to what you've already tried.
)

Another algorithm is to have concurrent logs in a
tree-of-logs-and-B-trees structure, with merge-sorting being
interleaved into the index accesses, either lazily on demand, or when
the tree-of-trees becomes unbalanced, or when seek time measurements
indicate it is worthwhile. That's more complex, but algorithmically
adapts better with the size of the data and the approximate
seek-time-to-data-size ratio.

Your index-merging strategy is similar to tree-of-logs-and-B-trees but
without the logs ;-)

Because you don't have the logs part, all your disk writes are random,
suffering from these kernel issues and needing the fdatasync() calls.

To improve this, I can think of a couple of simple things:

   1. Instead of writing small hash indexes, to merge them later,
write small sequential indexes: i.e. simply append words (index keys)
and the attached data until the file is large enough and it's
time to move to the next.

Then merge the sequential indexes, much as you merge tree ones
  now.

You might want a two-level strategy, with relatively small
sequential index files, and merging those to make medium size
B-tree indexes, then merging those to make a large hash or
  B-tree i
