Re: [Bug 147943] Re: [MASTER] broken initial stacking
I know what you mean about video card being obscured. Not many people run a X850 either. As far as bug reports go, I usually look to see if someone else posted something about, and if not, creating a new bug report. Alot of times it ends up as a duplicate of another bug with a subject line that has nothing to do with the bug itself, similar to this bug. My bug report had the title of something like, Panels do not show on desktop after logging in, running Compiz. Then when it became a duplicate of this bug which could be nominated for worst subject line for a bug report. But what I'm trying to say, is yes, you should file a bug report (as long as it's not obviously a duplicate of another existing bug). My experience with my card was strange to say the least. A fresh install of Gusty + XGL had Compiz running. Then when I realized video played very choppy, I installed the restricted drivers, which would not run Compiz. So I uninstalled again. Rebooted, and reinstalled the restricted drivers, and everything magically started working. I didn't file a bug report because I figured I did something wrong. So maybe try that and see if ity helps. Let me know and good luck, Ross On 10/10/07, Matt Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ross Peoples wrote: Matt, I have a X850 Platinum Edition and I have the proprietary drivers installed, and compiz looks great...aside from these types of bugs, I've never had it crash. Matt Jones wrote: It is still broken. Even when I create a new user, roboot, and login as the new user. Please stop marking this as fixed! And thank you medigeek for nominating this for Gutsy. When I initially reported It, I thought it was in the list of Gutsy bugs. And, because I never mentioned it: I have an ATI X800XT Platinum Edition with no restricted drivers installed (because they don't have compiz extensions) on my desktop, and an NVidia Geforce Go 7700 with restricted drivers for my laptop. Both machines still give the same error with stacking windows. I didn't want to fill the thread with more posts, so I emailed this to you. That is interesting that it works for you. When I enable the restricted driver and reboot. it says that my card does not support composite extensions. I know it works, because I used to download the drivers and install them from the ATI site, years ago with older Ubuntu releases. Do you think I should file a bug report about it not working? I'm not quite up-to-speed on how all the bug report procedures work in launchpad. So I don't know if that is something they would care about. Just wondering since you have more experience with it. On a side note. I've often thought of just giving my video card to Ubuntu, so they can make sure it works. It is kind of an obscure card. -- [MASTER] broken initial stacking (was: compiz hides quick loading windows at login) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147943 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of a duplicate bug. -- [MASTER] broken initial stacking (was: compiz hides quick loading windows at login) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147943 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 124773] Re: fsck freezes on laptop
Well, for someone who knows what they are doing, they *can* skip the check. They can simply boot into simple user mode, and use tune2fs to adjust mount count. Or, if you are booting using a plain text console, just edit /etc/e2fsck.conf, add: [options] allow_cancellation = true This will allow ^C to work. However, if you are using a graphical boot, it's up to the graphical boot manager to forward the ^C to e2fsck, which is not my problem. Personally, I think it's a REALLY, REALLY BAD IDEA, given my understanding of what Ubuntu is aiming for. There are solutions for technically clueful users; they're just not obvious, as you proposed. If you don't know to boot into single user mode, you probably don't have enough clue to understand when it's safe to do this, and when not to. Also, note that for users who are complaining that fsck is freezing at random places, there's almost some kind of hardware and/or kernel bug going on. Bypassing the fsck isn't going to help, and in fact, may cause much larger forms of data loss later on. -- fsck freezes on laptop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124773 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I think it might make sense for home installs to allow the account to be passwordless. For example a computer sitting at home and only used by family members might not need any gdm password at all. [Bug 151634] snd_hda_intel @ Intel DP35DP mb.: Input from Line-in / Mic can't be listen in the output
Public bug reported: Hi, I have an Intel DP35DP motherboard (http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/dp35dp/index.htm) with integrated audio (HDA with sigmatel STAC9271D codec) as you can see in this link for the motherboard's specification page. Ubuntu loads the snd_hda_intel driver for this. I can record from microphone or line-in normally, but I can't hear the sound from any of these inputs at the same time (loopback). I've tried all combinations possible using alsamixer and gnome volume control items (including the ones disabled by default). No way. While this may appear to be not important, it's a big problem because I have a TV capture card which doesn't have audio decoding in the chip (and even if it had, it would'nt be my preferred way to use it because TVTime doesn't support this directly, and also I would make the audio output busy). I can hear the sound if I redirect from input to output using some program like sox (or even the cat command - something like cat /dev/dsp /dev/audio). [Bug 151636] Metacity vanishes when switching virtual desktops
Public bug reported: I am using Gutsy Beta (everything up to date), upgraded from Feisty. I am running on a Dell Latitude D400 which uses an intel graphics chip. I have 'Extra' selected for the compiz settings, and I am currently mirroring my laptop display onto an external LCD monitor, configured from the Screens and Graphics applet rather than the built in laptop functions. I have 4 virtual desktops configured. When I change desktops by clicking on the the Workspace Switcher, no problem. If I use ctrl-alt-arrowkey to switch desktops, no problem. But when I use ctrl-alt-arrowkey to switch desktops, and THEN switch again by clicking the Workspace Switcher, the window manager and all my applications just vanish. I can continue to switch desktops using ctrl- alt-arrowkey (at least I think I do... the relevant compiz eyecandy appears on the screen.) but there is no actual window manager to speak of. If I switch to a console and then try to switch back, I am left with a black screen and blinking cursor. The graphical mode is not restored. I have to restart gdm to get back in. I can't find anything of note in either dmesg or /var/log/messages. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Metacity vanishes when switching virtual desktops https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151636 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry to speculate, but it kind of looks like the xserver-xorg-video- intel and the kernel versions are chasing each other in a circle over how to allocate some resource. Thanks for your report, the first part of your report works fine here, if i rename a folder which contains some music and that folder is under my Music library which is watched by rhythmbox i get the update and the next start of rhythmbox. Ok, I'm in midterms right now, but as soon as I have some time I will profile gedit. Out of curiosity muntyan, do you experience the same problem that we describe or are you unable to reproduce this behavior? A simple test is to try adding garbage text (ie. asdf asdf...) to the example I posted on this bug report.
