[Bug 155947] Re: ldap config causes Ubuntu to hang at a reboot
I have reported the duplicate of this at #156562: I have installed libnss-ldap and related packages in order to authenticate against LDAP server. During installation, I have been asked for server information, LDAP version etc. However, this information has been placed NOWHERE in /etc. It seems that Ubuntu simply drops the information! It dosent set up ANY needed configuration for LDAP auth! Strange, that there is /etc/ldap.conf both with /etc/ldap/ldap.conf (this one is not efective, all rows commented) Then I managed all the needed files manually: /etc/ldap/ldap.conf, /etc/ldap/ldapserver, /etc/pam.d/login, /etc/pam.d/common-account, /etc/nsswitch.conf and so on. I did it the way that has WORKED with Feisty Fawn and Debian Etch before. After reboot, system fails to boot. It stops on "Starting kernel log daemon" forever. When I set passwd, group and shadow parameters in nsswitch.conf back to "compat", it starts normally, however when I set them to "compat ldap files", fails to boot again. -- ldap config causes Ubuntu to hang at a reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/155947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'm really just commenting to note that until the proposed fix gets to the repository you can workaround the problem quite easily by running explicitly using bash, like so: sudo bash opcontrol --start --no-vmlinux -- [SRU] for oprofile, edgy-updates: bashism in oprofile's opcontrol script prevents user from setting any events https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/69455 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 154438] Re: Mouse-over pop-up labels disappear on upgrading to Gutsy.
Yes, I did restart after upgrading, but no change. What I also did was install the Mozilla version of Firefox 2.0.0.8, and the problem is now solved. It also didn't happen with the Ubuntu version of Firefox under Feisty, using the exact same set of extensions. So it appears to be unrelated to any extensions, and limited to Ubuntu Firefox 2.0.0.6 (or 2.0.0.x) under Gutsy. [Bug 156556] Gimp brushes leave garbage pixel trails
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gimp I just upgraded from Ubuntu 6.10 to 7.10, and now Gimp has a horrible display artifact: every tool that uses a brush leaves bright green pixel trails across the image. [Bug 156550] Re: [gutsy] ati open source driver issues with external monitor
I have EXACTLY the same issue on a Dell C640. I attached this snapshot in another bug report. This is also a security issue because the screensaver (shown) does not cover the whole screen, even when "locked," allowing access to files outside of the area that Ubuntu "thinks" is the full-screen area - i.e., the area delineated by the top and bottom panels in your photo, and by the screen saver in fullscreen preview mode in this photo. Some people are reporting that there is a blank window in movie players when playing videos. I also have that problem - the picture doesn't "appear" unless I drag the window OUTSIDE of the panels shown. If someone doesn't have an external monitor supporting a larger resolution, they would not even have that option. This is a serious problem and it occurred after upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy on my laptop. Interestingly, it does the same thing with both a clean install AND with running from the liveCD. I never had this screen geometry problem with Feisty. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot-1.png" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10150093/Screenshot-1.png -- [gutsy] ati open source driver issues with external monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156550 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I upgraded from 6.10 to Gusty and have the same problem/message on my Toshiba satellite A135-S4427. I was able to get sound by booting an earlier kernel from grub that remained on the list, but then some of the other things don't work right. I can't turn off my card in the BIOS because there is not an option to do that. Re: [Bug 150930] Re: Black screen, and bad usplash.conf
Well it seems to me that the main issue of contention here is the detected settings being incorrect for given hardware. I am wondering how usplash defines things like vertical and horizontal refresh rates and if they are modifiable. Perhaps something along the lines of X's modelines? I'm kinda of stabbing in the dark here but it seems that some people have gotten it working at certain resolutions but it doesn't work at others that it seemingly should for their hardware. IE more than few have gotten this working at 800x600 yet I doubt that the 1024x768 that it was originally configured to run at was beyond the bounds of their displays capabilities. [Bug 156540] High pitch whine on left audio channel with Asus K8N-VM
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic Using 4ch or 6ch mode on Gutsy with the Asus K8N-VM motherboard onboard audio (nvidia MCP-51 chipset) results in a high pitched whine on both the front and rear left channel speakers. Right and center channels are unaffected. The device is listed as AD198x Analog and is using the snd- hda-intel driver. Googling around turned up similar issues with other nforce boards, but all were solved by using one of the following lines in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base: options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=3stack position_fix=0 single_cmd=0 options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack options snd-hda-intel model=3stack options snd-hda-intel model=auto I have tried all 4 variations with a reboot in between, and still get the high pitched whine. Using 2ch mode eliminates the problem, but means that 5.1 sound doesn't work. I have tried muting and unmuting various combinations of channels and altering levels, none of which has any positive impact. Additionally, adjusting any level while sound is being played results in the audio output abruptly dying (I was using the test under System->Preferences->Sound). The only fix is to stop any application using the device and adjust the main audio level on the system tray applet, which seems to restore sound. $ tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat Mixers: 0: Analog Devices AD1986A Will attach debugging outputs. [Bug 48404] Re: netbeans java app gui is blank in xgl and java5
Gutsy has now been released for almost a week, but this bug remains unfixed. Luckily, exporting AWT_TOOLKIT fixes the problem for me as well, but nevertheless if a patch has been made, why not commit this upstream? Does this patch break something else? Just curious, thanks :) -- netbeans java app gui is blank in xgl and java5 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/48404 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 107188] Re: [MASTER] [kde] Upgrade tool crashed with " Cannot allocate memory" (edgy -> feisty)
I am pleased to report that using the above patch, my second sandbox tower was finally able to upgrade using the dist-upgrade.py script without error. I will run the test again on my other sandbox tower as soon as I revert it back to a Feisty install. Right now, I need to go to bed. While this result bodes well, I still need you all to try out the patch and report your results back here. Doing so will greatly aid in the resolution of other errors that still may be lurking. If you need some help applying the patch I posted instructions in the other bug report linked above, just make sure you download the second patch revision instead of the one used in the example. Once you have run the patch, successful or not, please post the log files located in /var/log/dist- upgrade/. I am not a developer, I am just a lowly peon user who had his install corrupted when the update-manager crashed. As such I need your assistance in getting this patch tested and, if successful, pushed to the higher-ups. [Bug 149641] Re: logcheck fails when auth.log.1.gz missing
Apologies, but I have to correct/improve myself on the previous comment. I have a feeling I was running an older version of logcheck. If I run logcheck from cron with full path (certainly the ubuntu version) like this: sudo -u logcheck /usr/sbin/logcheck -op (given that I add /usr/bin/logcheck to /etc/sudoers with NOPASSWD) or alernatively: Add a setuid logcheck to /usr/sbin/logcheck: sudo chown logcheck /usr/sbin/logcheck chmod u+s /usr/sbin/logcheck Then, the offset files get created/updated under: /var/lib/logcheck/offset.var.log. and the 'touch/chown' fix (step 2 above) is not necessary. It is all hairy, but overall, the setuid checklog, setgid adm looks like the cleanest solution. What is required is for all of the 3 conditions to be true: - /usr/sbin/logcheck can read all its configs under /etc/logcheck/*/* - /usr/sbin/logtail can write offset files under /var/lib/logcheck/* - /usr/sbin/logtail can read files under /var/log (some of which are user:group root:adm and not world readable) Sorry. -- logcheck fails when auth.log.1.gz missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/149641 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 156536] BOINC World Community Grid stuck "Waiting for memory"
Public bug reported: This actually appeared some months ago. So far it has only affected one of my machines, but the machine has two disk partitions configured for Ubuntu. There are obviously no hardware differences between them, and they even share the same swap partition. Before the Gutsy 7.10 upgrade, the BOINC Manager in one of the Ubuntu boots would frequently report that the process was stuck "Waiting for memory" (Wfm). At first it was rare, though it seemed most likely to occur at boot time. For example, it might run to 30% one day, then continue to 75% the next day, but on the third day it would just stick in the Wfm state. Later it became more common, and finally it seemed to occur right after the initial computations. It would download a fresh unit (after a Reset command), run for a few minutes, and then go directly to Wfm. I tried everything I could think of to fix it, including complete removals and reinstalls. At this time, there was no problem in the other Ubuntu. After the Gutsy 7:10 upgrade, both of them seem to be broken and immediately transition to the Wfm state. (I'm going to try a few of the other BOINC projects, though just for testing. WorldCommunityGrid is the one that is officially sanctioned by my employer.) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- BOINC World Community Grid stuck "Waiting for memory" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156536 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 156537] Mines graphics annoying
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-games I am using KDE 7.10 with Crystal window decoration and Keramik style. When I play mines the only differentiation between cleared space and uncleared space are small dotted lines that are VERY difficult to see when you are going quickly. I played it in GNOME and they were different colors, but for whatever reason with my settings they are the same. It isn't a bug I guess, but it would improve game play. [Bug 133765] Re: gutsy md module not present in ramdisk
dpkg-reconfigure mdadm did not work for me. It turns out that *somehow* the UUID on my raid array changed and the mdadm.conf never got updated (possibly when I grew the array with mdadm -grow?) and the change wasn't obvious, because the first two segments were identical. I only noticed it when I ran out of other options and compared them side by side... Anyhow, once the UUID was updated in mdadm.conf and initrd.img was regenerated, I was able to boot 2.6.22-14. The only thing I can think is that the mdadm script in 2.6.20-16 must be *much* more forgiving, because by all rights, that should have never booted either. -- gutsy md module not present in ramdisk https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 156535] After changing due date of task in task list, the selection jumps to a random task
