[Bug 158407] Re: Ubiquity causes MBR problems; fails to install grub

2007-10-29 Thread Daniel O'Donnell
Since sending this, the tech person at our university I asked to fixed
the windows MBR told me that that was irrecoverable as well. I didn't
oversee his work, so I'm not sure how thorough the review was or if he
missed anything. But it certainly wasn't obviously repairable.

[Bug 158489] Java crashed when running under padsp

2007-10-29 Thread Alexander Rødseth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

There is really only one Java-program I use regularly, and that is Cgoban3
(http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jnlp).
It's very stable, and I've used it for several years without a hitch.

But, after switching to pulseaudio, I found out I have to run java (or
"javaws", like in this case) with padsp in order to get any sound.

Here's the message I got on the commandline when java+Cgoban3 just disappeared:
java: pulsecore/memblock.c:315: pa_memblock_unref: Assertion
`pa_atomic_load(&b->_ref) > 0' failed.

Before the crash, I watched a video in Firefox that uses flash that in turn
uses the pulseaudio flashsupport so-file that I have installed on my system
(which works perfectly fine, btw).
I don't really think that has anything to do with it, though, since I've
watched videos in my browser before without anything strange happening to the
sound.

Steps I did to produce the crash (which I'm unable to reproduce, unfortunately):
1. Start Cgoban3
2. Watch a flash-video in Firefox with the pulseaudio flash-support library
installed (like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teMlv3ripSM)
3. Return to Cgoban3 and make it produce a sound
4. Everything should disappear

(Java, flash and cgoban3 are about the only non-open source programs I
use on my computer, just for the record ;) )

java version "1.6.0_03"

Shockwave Flash 9.0 r48

~% du -b /usr/lib/libflashsupport.so

Here's how I run Cgoban3 with the downloaded "cgoban.jnlp" file
(http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jnlp)

[Bug 158490] Re: Pentium D Install Shows Single Core

2007-10-29 Thread David Portwood
Are you sure this is a true dual core processor? Alot of Pentium D's just have
hyper-threading which will show up as 2 processors in both windows and linux.
Could you please issue the command in a terminal 'dmesg > dmesg.txt" and attach
dmesg.txt to this bug report.
Thanks,

[Bug 22336] Re: CPU overheats during high usage "throttling "

2007-10-29 Thread GreatBunzinni
On a side note, I've just realized that opensuse in fact also suffers
from this problem. It doesn't affect it as hard as it affects Ubuntu
because it appears that it's overheating limits are higher. I've just
installed opensuse, gave it a trial run and my laptop shutdown with
warning messages announcing that the system temperature was at about 104

[Bug 154973] Re: Ubuntu Device Database app

2007-10-29 Thread Mark W. Tomlinson
Sorry, Jose - a default install doesn't show the System Tools menu off
of Applications. To enable it, go to System -> Preferences -> Main
Menu. You should find System Tools toward the bottom of the list.
Click on it and then, in the right-hand pane, click the Show checkbox
for Ubuntu Device Database (along with any others that look
interesting). One you exit Main Menu, you should now be able to see the
System Tools menu.

[Bug 158497] update-notifier does not hide after update when less-than-critical updates not applied

2007-10-29 Thread Craig Rae
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-notifier

The update-notifier icon does not hide itself if an update is done where
advertised less-than-critical updates are explicitly left out of an
update. This results in the icon being left on the screen perpetually,
which very much reduces its usefulness - it it's always there, what
triggers me to click it to find out that updates are available?

For example, I applied a bunch of critical updates this morning that
included the latest update for Thunderbird. However, there was also one
"recommended" update, ubufox (0.4-beta1-0ubuntu4), that I really didn't
care about at the time, so I unchecked it. I then installed the
remaining critical updates.

One the update was complete, I closed the update manager and found that
the update notifier was still hanging around on my taskbar. This now
means that unless I take the "recommended" update, I effectively lose
automatic notification of updates through update-notifier. I'll be stuck
with a large orange blob on my screen that tells me nothing (without
manually checking) that new updates are available because of this one
recommended update that I didn't want to take.

update-notifier is in itself a good idea. More importantly than just
deciding on which updates to apply, it shows me *when* I have to make a
decision about what gets updated. However, this behaviour seems a little
off. If I explicitly decide (by unchecking a box in the update manager)
to leave out an update that isn't hugely important for whatever reason,
then having the update notification hang around to show the update I
left out seems a little off.

A better option might be to show the update notification as normal and
have it persist until the user has at least opened up the update manager
to see what's available. Then, if an update is performed successfully
but one or more updates are left out, it would seem to make sense for
the notification to hide itself as the user has chosen not to accept the
update(s) at that time.

This doesn't mean that the update(s) refused earlier by the user
shouldn't be offered again when the next round of critical updates come
along (reminders are always good), but the notification of updates
should go away - consider me notified, already!

If this behaviour is definitely wanted so that most people keep their
system up to date, then I understand. However, at least provide an
option in preferences where updates that are explicitly turned down
won't cause the notification to persist forever.

This is not bug #33861. When updates are performed, the notifier shows
only the remaining updates.

This is not bug #102762, which is a wish-list entry to stop and start
the update notifier process to save resources on less capable machines.

Anyway, I guess I'm going to go update ubufox now to get rid of the nag
icon...

Seen on:

Xubuntu 7.10
Ubuntu 7.10

Severity:

This is not a severe problem. It does not hinder the update mechanism in
any way. However, it does reduce the effectiveness of update-notifier in
indicating new updates. This could even be a wish-list item, but I'd
argue for slightly higher severity based on the reduction in
notification effectiveness.

How to reproduce:

1. When updates are available, update-notifier will appear. Click on the
notifier to pull up the Update Manager.
2. Deselect at least one update. Click "Install Updates" to fetch and install
the remaining updates.
3. Once the updates are complete, the update(s) left out will still be shown.
Close the update manager.
4. The update notification icon will still be visible. Its tooltip will show
the number of updates that were left out.

This is 100% reproducible.

Preferred operation:
---

The important part:

4: When Update Manager is closed after a successful update, the update
notification will be hidden until the next round of updates arrive.

[Bug 132039] Re: [gutsy] /etc/network/if-up.d/50firestarter exited with return code 2

2007-10-29 Thread m1westwood
I have the same problem. One thing to note, if I understand firestarter
correctly, it is simply an interface to view and change the rules that
the ipchains firewall uses - and if it is not running, it does not mean
your firewall is not running - it just means that you cannot use the
firestarter gui to make changes or view the current policy. Isn't that
correct?

[Bug 158486] Re: Nautilus - ntfs to fat32 file transfer completes successfully, but files are gone after restart.

2007-10-29 Thread dAniel hAhler
I suppose you've looked at the external hard drive after installation from
Ubuntu? Have you tried looking at it from Windows (if available)?
Have you tried using the Live CD again to see if you can access the files from
there - instead of using the installed system?

Whatever you do, you should avoid/prevent any write accesses to the
device, so that the files may get undeleted again (unless they do not
get overwritten).

You can try "du -sch /mnt/usbhdd/*" from a terminal to see which folders
occupy how much space (where /mnt/usbhdd is the mount point of the
device). Maybe it's just in another subfolder?

(I've queried you on IRC - you may want to reply there)

[Bug 8497] Re: grub guessed BIOS disk order incorrectly

2007-10-29 Thread richard
This is STILL an issue in GUTSY and can create an UN-BOOTABLE SYSTEM
that's very difficult to debug.

Ubuntu (or grub) simply doesn't have the same idea of disk ordering as
the BIOS.

In particular this is what just happened to me with a new Gutsy install.

After installation and reboot the computer just said "Grub stage 1.5"
and "Error 15". That error apparently means it couldn't parse a number,
which is pretty much a useless error.

After spending about 2 hours on the problem, I realised that grub had
installed itself on hd0, according to Ubuntu, but actually the second
disk according to the BIOS. The computer was happy to boot from the
second disk, but when grub then ran I can only assume it thought it was
on the first disk and subsequently read information from that disk which
didn't have the grub-stuff installed. And it broke.

I made it all work by physically shifting the disk connections around to
make the boot disk was the first in the BIOS sequence (but detected as
*hd2* by Ubuntu) and reinstalling (just to be sure).

Expand references when new columns/rows are inserted
Specifies whether to expand references when inserting columns or rows adjacent
to the reference range. This is only possible if the reference range, where the
column or row is inserted, originally spanned at least two cells in the desired
direction.
Example: If the range A1:B1 is referenced in a formula and you insert a new
column after column B, the reference is expanded to A1:C1. If the range A1:B1
is referenced and a new row is inserted under row 1, the reference is not
expanded, since there is only a single cell in the vertical direction.
If you insert rows or columns in the middle of a reference area, the reference
is always expanded.

I've tried this option and now my inserts are behaving as espected :-)

Hope this helps other people.

P.S.: I think this should be set by default

[Bug 26419] Re: gnome-session hangs when "lo" is not correctly configured

2007-10-29 Thread kailden
I had a similar problem (upon upgrade from feisty to gutsy) and I think it was
a problem with gnome-power-manager.
When I ran gnome-power-manager in a terminal, it couldn't find
/usr/lib/libwnck-1.so-18.

I made a symbolic link as follows:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libwnck-1.so.22 /usr/lib/libwnck-1.so.18

and made sure that gnome-power-manager was running in my gnome session,

(System->Preferences->Sessions  and check Power Manager)

and now there is no hang.

[Bug 32963] Re: totem overrides XV_CONSTRAST to wrong default value (Xv movies on i810/i945 have horrible colour/gamma)

2007-10-29 Thread Jamie Lokier
Responding to comment from Vytas: "For a new user in Gutsy, it works fine.
But for one who has upgraded, it won't. Because normal saturation is now 1/8,
normal contrast 1/4. Totem "restore defaults" button moves all values to 1/2
producing very artistic results.".

I'm using an upgraded-to-Gutsy, on a laptop with 945GM.

I'm seeing that before "Restore defaults", Totem sets my contrast to the
most negative value (i.e. slider in the left position), and that makes
the picture all blues and reds. "Restore defaults" actually makes the
picture much better, though still not quite right.

[Bug 32963] Re: totem overrides XV_CONSTRAST to wrong default value (Xv movies on i810/i945 have horrible colour/gamma)

2007-10-29 Thread Jamie Lokier
I see similar problems with Gutsy's driver. However, my image isn't
"too white". There is no white at all: it's all blue and red
combinations.

I didn't know about xvattr and so on, and it's annoying that Totem has
no controls (that I could find) to adjust any of the
brightness/contrast/saturation values, and the control to turn of Xv
output is rather obscurely hidden in a different program (so I didn't
find it).

So I tried other video players. Xine looked similar, but slightly
better. Still all blues and reds but with a hint of green. Turning off
Xv fixed it.

mplayer had slightly more green, yet still with the same problem.
Turning off Xv fixed it (unsurprising by now).

Isn't it odd that Totem/Xine/mplayer all looked different, despite
having the same problem. (Note that I always tried Totem first).

Eventually I found that the Xv Contrast control was set to its most
negative value. By changing this in mplayer to a low-to-middle value,
the picture was fixed.

Curiously, I am now using this driver, and Totem looks fine without touching
any Xv settings:
http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/intel/xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.1.1~git20071004-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

But I also notice that Contrast is still set to that most negative
value, but now changing any of the controls doesn't have any effect on
the picture, in any video player (using Xv).

[Bug 80535] Re: Loud beep when installing feisty-desktop-i386 on DQ965COEKR motherboard

2007-10-29 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Confirmed on Gutsy stable (updated from Feisty), installed on a HP
XE3-gc -laptop. (i386)

It starts to make the noise pretty early on the startup (during splash).

I removed 'splash' from grub, it started it only in the login screen.
Then stopped, and started, stopped and started again and kept making the
noise all the way.

When shutting down, it stops when around 75% of the shutdown is done
(the progress bar).

Restarted once again, put acpi=force, sound's gone and everything
works..

weird.. Hope this helps you. The laptop is not mine, I don't have proper
access to it so I might have some difficulties to provide more
information dmesg attached from a run where it made the noise.

[Bug 124773] Re: fsck freezes on laptop

2007-10-29 Thread Theodore Ts'o
Hi Bryce,

It's very likely your problem is different from the problems reported by
people pre-e2fsprogs 1.40.

Please refer to the section REPORTING BUGS in the e2fsck man page. In
particular, what would be most helpful is the output of dumpe2fs and a
compressed raw e2image snapshot of your filesystem. i.e., replacing
/dev/hda1 with your device, something like this:

e2image -r /dev/hda1 - | bzip2 > hda1.e2i.bz2

Please note the privacy implications of this command as documented in
the e2image man page before making it available in a public location
such as using a launchpad attachment. In particular, a raw e2image
file will expose the names of the files in your filesystem, although not
the content of the files themselves. Hence, if you have any files with
names such as "ch1ld pr0n" or "secr1t Al Quaeda attack plans" or even
"letter to my mistress" :-), please make sure you understand what
information you are making available when you send me such a file. If
you want to send me private e-mail with download information, I will
honor any confidentiality request you might make of me, and I won't look
at any filename information except as might become available as I am
debugging your problem.

Best regards,

[Bug 158487] A way to delete finished jobs needed

2007-10-29 Thread zerwas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

For Ubuntu 7.10 there is a way needed to delete finished jobs in system-
config-printer --no-tray-icon under "View" -> "Show completed jobs".
Right clicking on a job does not bring an option to remove it.

At the moment it is needed to do 3 complicated steps for beginners:

sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys stop
sudo rm /var/cache/cups/job.cache
sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys start

[Bug 93964] Re: Malicious program run as user can compromise system

2007-10-29 Thread Brian Visel
Example exploit had a bug in it that I just noticed.. ..one year later,
almost.. feh. anywho, this is the example repaired. It's
uncomfortably simple. Security will need some work as Ubuntu grows.

Perhaps we could make a "Desktop User" who can (gk)su to do only
specific tasks, such as some or all the programs that are in the
system/administration menu, but to disallow running of other
executables. This won't prevent a malicious .deb from being installed,
but it will go a long way in fighting simple exploits without getting in
(most) users' way.

How/where would I get involved in helping to fix this (I don't need a
whole explanation, I can read documentation, I just mean -- what package
crew, etc?)

[Bug 158486] Nautilus - ntfs to fat32 file transfer completes successfully, but files are gone after restart.

2007-10-29 Thread Lonnie
Public bug reported:

Nautilus tricked me!

I've just migrated a friend from XP to Ubuntu, and so far, it seems that
I've lost all his files during the migration. I haven't told him the bad
news yet. Please help.

Before migrating a Windows XP machine to Ubuntu 7.10, I used the live CD
to move files from XP's NTFS file system to a 500gig USB external hard
drive with a fat32 file system.

After the 80+ gig file transfer completed, I used nautilus to navigated
the external hard drive and (seemingly) confirmed that the files were
indeed transfered; they were showing up in nautilus.

Next, while still using the 7.10 live CD, I unmounted the external HD by
right-clicking (on its desktop icon representation) and selecting
"unmount volume".

A dialog box popped up that asked me if I wanted to empty trash on the
volume I was unmounting. I selected the "empty trash" button.

After installation, I returned to the external hard drive and all the
files I copied were missing! The only files missing were the files I
copied there using Nautilus with the Ubuntu 7.10 live cd.

>From the command line, using ls -a, I'm still unable to locate the
folder I created for the migration.

Doesn't anyone understand what went wrong here. Does anyone have
suggestions on recovering this missing migration folder that contains
all my friend folders and files?

Kubuntu shares the same packages as Ubuntu, so what Debian has done will
make no difference between the two. I suspect it's due to differing
audio drivers, or perhaps just general mplayer {crazi, random}ness.

Debian fixed this by going to 1.0rc2, as we will for Hardy (ie. 8.04

[Bug 158483] evince mishandles duplex printing of multiple copies of PDFs with an odd number of pages.

2007-10-29 Thread zjohnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

First of all thank you for developing a fairly nice and intuitive
document viewer, and if this bug report is best submitted to some
subsystem project which specificly handles printing, well I'm sorry and
hope that someone can move it to the right place for me. :)

Okay so say you have an HP laserjet 4300 DN which is a duplex laser printer.

Say you have the proper PPD file for it.

Say you have a 3 (or any odd number) of pages in a PDF document

Say you want 2 copies of said document.

So you select print, and select 2 copies, and also confirm that "Page
Setup->Two-sided" is already set to "Flip on Long Edge".

What you end up with is 3 pieces of paper. Each printed on both sides.

The main problems are that the 2nd piece of paper contains page 3 on one
side, and page 1 on the other.

And the general side-y-ness is thrown off by 1 for the entire 2nd copy
of the document.

I strongly think it should make the 2nd side of the 2nd piece of paper
blank and start anew for the 2nd document. and I think most people would
agree. :)

Also if you attempt to collate in the above situation things get even
more silly. You end up with 3 pieces of paper. The first with page 1
printed on both sides and the 2nd paper with page2 on both sides, and so
on.

BTW, I also tried this on a Xerox Phaser 8550 with its own PPD and
experienced the same results.

Thank you,
Zachariah Johnson

[Bug 158482] Wrong Live CD resolution

2007-10-29 Thread Jose Luis
Public bug reported:

Hello there, My monitor is a SyncMaster 540N, n once I boot to get the
live session, I get a higher res, but my screen wont go beyong 1024 X
768, so I cannot see a thing, n the screen blinks, then I get "the video
has restarted 6 times in the last 90 secs" n I cannot see the live CD,
becaus eof that I cannot install Ubuntu 7.10, my Video card is an Ati
x1600 512 Mb. I have an Athlon X2 3800+ I am using 32 bit version,
because 64 bit versions do not have the same support like this.

Why the default screen res of the live session is 1600? n why xorg is not
detecting my appropiated screen res, I have tried ctrl + alt + f2 then pkill
GDM, then edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf n nothing happens. cannot start ubuntu,
cannot install ubuntu. I using Debian etch 64, but since getting help for this
linux distro is a pain in the back, I decided to move to Ubuntu bac again, for
the support, I have been on IRC channel, but it seems that my problem, is not
video, I think is the default screen res, is there a way to boot the live
session wioth a lower res?

n I cant consider downloading ubuntu again. because I have low
connection, I ordered the CDs from ship it, but if those CDs are live,
then I will be doomed to be without ubuntu.

thanks in advance.

I can't really claim to fully understand C (and even more kernel code),

I believe this should be closed. It is, indeed, a bug on the hal-device-

the hal-device. It should be easy to correct this but, since it is being
deprecated (already deleted from the git repository of freedesktop) and
replaced by gnome-device-manager, it might be discarded. Anyway, this
bug report dates from 2006 already!

[Bug 158481] IPv6 causes wireless to disconnect/reconnect often

2007-10-29 Thread tvst
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I have had the following bug since Ubuntu 6.10:

- I connect to a wireless network with Network Manager (doesn't matter whether
it's hidden or has any type of encryption)
- After a few minutes my connection goes down (usually around 10-30 minutes)
- I can immediately see nm-applet trying to reconnect or connect to another
network

My computer is a Thinkpad T60 with an Atheros-based internal wireless
interface (more specifically, AR5212 802.11abg NIC) using the default
MadWifi drivers that are shipped with Ubuntu.

This is a big problem when doing long downloads, or using SSH or VNC. At
times, nm-applet would even fail to reconnect to any of the available
networks, requiring me to restart the NetworkManager process by hand.

This does not happen on the same machine when running Windows, so
malfunctioning hardware and anything external to the computer are
obviously not the underlying cause. Other (Windows) computers on the
same wireless networks operate without any problems.

Also, the problem survived through clean installs of Ubuntu 7.04 and,
later, 7.10. So this is not an issue related to my specific settings.

After a while looking for a solution for almost 1 year, I finally found
a temporary fix: to disable IPv6. I'm not sure *why* this works, but the
fact is that it *does*. I've been happily using my WiFi now for 20 days
without a single reconnect. This is how I disabled it:

- edit /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
- change line "alias net-pf-10 ipv6" to "alias net-pf-10 off ipv6"
- reboot

I explained these steps on another bug report
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/64173),
but since I'm not sure whether the original poster's bug was related to
mine, I figured it would be better to open a brand new one.

[Bug 129081] Re: [needs-packaging] Mumble

2007-10-29 Thread Thorvald Natvig
License holders has been discussed before in this very thread. The
speex/ directory is a snapshot of libspeex and libspeexdsp. It includes
the COPYING file from that directory. Stefan Gehn and Sebastian
Schlingmann have both submitted larger OSX-related patches to Mumble and
as such should probably be mentioned in the toplevel LICENSE file. I'll
get that fixed.

BTW, before anyone gets confused, Mumble's sourcecode is BSD (revised)
licensed, but any binary packages are GPL as you include GPL'd headers
when you compile (and link to GPL libraries). So make sure the final
package is licensed with GPL. (This is also the reason LICENSE and
debian/copyright differ)

[Bug 46055] Re: Natural named range not updated

2007-10-29 Thread Bert Vorenholt
Confirmed on Kubuntu 7.10 OOo 2.3.0

Not only a named-range problem though. Even with a "normal" =SUM() formula the
col/row range isn't updated.
When you actually do the insert on the row above the row with the formula
(inserting a row anywhere within the range, except a new last one), the range
gets updated, but then you have a gap in the table.

I find this bug extreemly important because this is not expected and
easy overseen, with possible (financial) consequences for the user who
is using OOo for (professional) calculations/analyzing/reporting.

[Bug 139635] Re: [cryptsetup] library dependency in /sbin/cryptsetup

2007-10-29 Thread Jens Gustedt
Yet to report another hit of this bug. Took me some hours to find out why my
swap wouldn't come at boot time, altough I followed all the documentation.
I am really surprised to find that cryptsetup depends on dynamic libraries. Not
only the ones in /usr/lib, but in general it is a bad idea. This executable is
critical for the early boot phase, Messing around with it is playing with fire.

Found a workaround, which is to list /usr as a dependency in crypdisks,
but this only works since I only have swap encrypted for the moment.
Thinking of what have happend if I'd just naively had encrypted my root
partition. Undermines my confidence in Ubuntu.

[Bug 91966] Re: screen artifacts after resume, part row of pixels in error (945GM)

2007-10-29 Thread Jamie Lokier
You might find this bug report useful:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12667

I notice that the git changeset which is said to cause the regression
(in that report), adds a check and message "Non-contiguous GTT entries".

Interestingly, the package from Bryce (which fixes the screen but breaks
3d) for me results in this message in my Xorg.0.log. Specifically, I
get an error message:

(EE) intel(0): Non-contiguous GTT entries: (6295552,0x163ffbe000) vs (131072,0x
   3f82)
(WW) intel(0): xf86AllocateGARTMemory: allocation of 1536 pages failed
(Cannot allocate memory)

This doesn't appear in my Xorg.0.log with the stock Gutsy driver.

I mentioned in a post on bug #91966 that this is the changeset that made all
the trouble:
a4f1a7872f6f959bb4bc6568face710bee3589de
It's from the git repo pulled from:

I'd also say that the changeset above deals with a lot of memory stuff, it's
hard to understand.

[Bug 91966] Re: screen artifacts after resume, part row of pixels in error (945GM)

2007-10-29 Thread eeejay
I suspect that the reason the corrupt row is disappearing is because DRI
is disabled when the server reverts to software rendering. This is
something we already knew: disabling DRI makes the screen artifact go
away.

[Bug 88772] Re: X/radeon in feisty breaks ppc/ati external dvi/vga output

2007-10-29 Thread Edwin Grubbs
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 88741 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/88741

The "Screen and Graphics Preferences" and the "Screen Resolution
Preferences" in gnome's System menu erroneously showed the only
resolution options as 303Hz and 304Hz.

After I changed the monitor model in "Screen and Graphics Preferences", I
correctly got the refresh rate options 60Hz, 65Hz, 70Hz, 75Hz, 85Hz, and it
would let me test the refresh rates, but the "OK" button didn't actually make
the change. 70Hz was the highest rate that didn't have the pincushion
distortion.

If I re-opened "Screen and Graphics Preferences", it would show the correct
ViewSonic P95f+ monitor, but it would only show 303Hz and 304Hz as options.

"Screen and Graphics Preferences" added the modlines to the xorg.conf. When I
restarted xorg, it was running at 1600x1200, although the virtual desktop size
was 2048x1536. I was able to change the resolution in "Screen and Graphics
Preferences" from 2048x1536 to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Interestingly, the "Screen and Graphics Preferences" removed these lines from
the Seciont "Device"
  Option "CRT2HSync" "30-110"
  Option "CRT2VRefresh" "50-160"

There must be something else that "Screen and Graphics Preferences" is doing
differently than dpkg-reconfigure that gets it to work. Since the "Screen and
Graphics Preferences" xorg.conf now works, I was worried that the
xorg.conf from dpkg-reconfigure only didn't work because it had a slightly
lower horizontal and vertical sync rate. However, when I used these configs it
still didn't work:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 30-110
VertRefresh 50-160
EndSection

After looking at the diffs between the configs, I figured that the following
change is what fixed the xorg.conf without resorting to CRT2HSync and
CRT2VRefresh.

 Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 SE]"
+ Boardname "ati"
+ Busid "PCI:2:0:0"
Driver "ati"
+ Screen 0
+ Option "MergedFB" "off"
- BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
 EndSection

It turns out that
Option "MergedFB" "off"
fixes the issue with the xorg.conf generated by debconf.

[Bug 158468] [gutsy] openoffice writer crashes when selecting a graphic in a document imported from Word.

In a document created in Word with a picture in a frame within the

It does not appear to be using the CPU (or any other resource that I can

Jörn - I'm kind of a newby. May I ask how did you verify that the destop
kernels have HIGHMEM4G set?
also - does setting HIGHMEM4G mean that they I _should_ be able to see 4G
(/proc/meminfo) when not using fglrx?

[Bug 158460] kernel 2.6.22-14.46 in alternate/live oopses with ST340823A hard drive

2007-10-29 Thread Francesc Oller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

2.6.20 stock feisty works well.

Similar to Plamen Atanassov comments in
http://https//bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/152820

If I substitute a ST340014A for ST340823A works well.

It seems to be a bug introduced when patching ide-disk regarding buggy
hpa in ST340823A and similar hd with odd number of sectors (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.15/+bug/26119). This was done for 2.6.22-13

Including jpgs because of shelling to a busybox.

I think the bug is critical. No gutsy installs if modprobing a ST340823A

[Bug 158444] Kernel panic on boot after upgrade to Gutsy

2007-10-29 Thread The Belgain
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

Upgrading a working Feisty install to Gutsy; the install runs
successfully, computer restarts and fails to boot due to a kernel panic.
Selecting the old Feisty kernel (2.6.20) from the GRUB menu the PC boots
up fine.

In recovery mode on the 2.6.22 kernel, the final error is:
"Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt."

I'm attaching the output of "sudo lspci -vvnn", the kern.log.0 file from
the failed boot (I think, though this hasn't caught the stack or kernel
panic message), and the output of dmesg from a successful boot on the
old 2.6.20 Feisty kernel.

This is 100% reproducible. Hardware is an Acer 1357LMi laptop (see
lspci output for details).

Let me know if you need more info on this.
