[Bug 131983] Re: [gutsy] trackerd kills disk io
Re: chicken and egg.. It would appear that the underlying problem could be revealed quite easily. I would hazard a guess that we few "corner cases" have perhaps something in common - we are installing Ubuntu on already densely populated systems? In my case, I suspect the combination of auto detection and mounting of my MS partitions (with 3.5 million files) and trackerd's attempt to index them. Is that a fair assessment? Would trackerd attempt to do that? If so, then it is easily replicated... create a Windows base system (XP, Vista, WIN2000 or whatever) with a few thousand dummy directories, and fill each directory with a few hundred randomly generated text files, THEN install Ubuntu and see what happens. [Bug 161799] bootsplash and boot-message enhancement suggestions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: sysv-rc-bootsplash May I make a few suggestions as to how the bootsplash system could be enhanced: 1)For comparison/inspiration, please take a look at the Mandriva, Knoppix, and Gentoo Live CDs. Specifically: 2)If the kernel-commandline has "quiet", then bootsplash is extremely uninformative (Just like Windows XP!). Mandriva lets you press Esc to view verbose details, but this doesn't work on Ubuntu. It would be really nice if this were added. 3)If you turn off splash entirely, in order to see the regular messages, they show up in a very large font. Manually specifying vga=XXX usually results in a completely black screen, even when hwinfo --framebuffer reports that the mode should work. 4)A consequence of (3) is that the virtual-terminals are extremely unpleasant to work with, after logging in, since they show so little information on a screen. 5)There's no use of colour in the boot messages. Even a simple OK and Failed (like Mandrake) would be helpful. 6)Take a look at the way Gentoo does it. The result is beautiful, clear, and informative. Hopefully, some of these suggestions are useful. Please do look at the Gentoo disc - it is quite a revelation. ** Affects: sysv-rc-bootsplash (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- bootsplash and boot-message enhancement suggestions https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/161799 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 139313] Re: nvidia dual head twinview (pseudo-xinerama): gnome-panel and maximized windows span both heads on first login
I also see this, with a fully updated gutsy, and the nvidia-driver(*) and twinview. (intel x86-64, GeForce 7600 GT) pseudo-Xinerama is completely broken, in both KDE and in Gnome, so that dialog boxes split across 2 screens, and maximising windows makes them span both screens. Also, the windows don't see the centre-line as an "edge", so don't "snap" to it in KDE. Unfortunately, logging out and back does not fix it. I also get the erroneous-error "You don't appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver" from nvidia-settings. Some further experimentation: 1)The KDM login screen does center correctly on one monitor, unlike every other dialog box, which centers between the monitors. (If I add "option xinerama" to xorg.conf, even this stops working. That's probably expected, since real xinerama disables twinview) 2)KDE's kcontrol monitor configuration looks unusual, and seems to be missing features compared to the same kcontrol option on other, non- ubuntu KDE systems. It seems to use displayconfig, which I am guessing is releated to displayconfig-gtk. Has Kubuntu replaced a working KDE- native configuration widget with a broken kubuntu tool? 3)Mandriva One 2008.0 (the liveCD with the nvidia driver) works absolutely perfectly with twinview, and the windows/panel behave properly. (The KDE monitor-tool is different in Mandriva 2008 (KDE 3.5.7) to the expectedly identical counterpart in kubuntu.) 4)The output from xdpyinfo is identical from both my broken Gutsy system, and my old Mandake 2005 system (which used the same monitors, but a totally different CPU/motherboard, and a FX5200 card, and which also had pseudo-xinerama working properly). Public bug reported: Autologin isn't working appropriately. This affect ltsp 5.0.39 in gutsy. [Bug 131983] Re: [gutsy] trackerd kills disk io
As somebody who commented earlier about the issues with trackerd Gutsy Beta, I feel it only fair that I should update and point out that, for me at least, the final shipped version of trackerd is quite usable on both my desktop system (not ancient but hardly current), and my laptop. So, whilst I cannot speak for others, or claim that tracker is perfect, it is entirely fair to say that a lot of issues were addressed, and that for a lot of people, if not the vast majority, it is quite usable at the moment. I will emphasize again, please don't take this as me saying "oh trackerd is perfect and people are just whining". I am not. But I felt it only fair to point out that it has improved to the point where it is "mostly harmless" :-) -- [gutsy] trackerd kills disk io https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131983 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 161789] No unread message info on next startup
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pidgin Problem: When there are unread message waiting to be read and pidgin is closed - there is no unread message info displayed on next start. Example: I get a message while watching tv on my computer. I will never discover these messages when I shut down the computer via remote. Also this is a problem when there is an incoming message after you decided to shut down the pc. If you saw the blinking it will lead to a pretty annoying search for the message on next startup. Expected: An unread message information is displayed on programm start. Note: The message itself is available - the problem is noticing it and then finding it. [Bug 161779] anjuta 2.2.2-1 FTBFS, missing automake1.9
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: anjuta anjuta 2.2.2-1 failed to build from source, although it built fine in pbuilder. It was built in pbuilder with the satisfy-depends-gdebi, but changing to satisfy-depends fails to build too. It was probably installing recommended packages, and that's why it didn't build in the builders. This debdiff fixes the issue. For a build log, see from my ppa: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10322143/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-i386.anjuta_2%3A2.2.2-1ubuntu1%7Eppa1_FULLYBUILT.txt.gz The ftbfs log: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10279578/buildlog_ubuntu-hardy-lpia.anjuta_2%3A2.2.2-1_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz ** Affects: anjuta (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium Status: Triaged ** Tags: ftbfs -- anjuta 2.2.2-1 FTBFS, missing automake1.9 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/161779 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 161778] Samba slow on gigabit networks with r8169
Public bug reported: I have a freshly installed Gutsy Gibon, and I have tested FTP performances (from a Debian/GNU Etch server) getting consistently near 48 MB/s (48.66, 48.23, 48.04 and 48.52 MB/s) writing in /dev/shm and with a 351 MB file. But, when I test Samba performance por the same file in the same server, I get a consistent performance of near 13 MB/s. Even more extrange is that, when I do two parallel Samba downloads for the same file, I get two downloads of 13 MB/s (~26 MB/s). If I check with three files of 100 MB, the downloads boast a speed ~36 MB/s for the three downloads. With four files, the performance is ~40 MB/s (near FTP performance).
