[Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot

2007-11-20 Thread Kenster35
I was having the same problem UNTIL I disabled ipv6 (I don't use IPV6).
Now it boots fast...

Disable IPV6:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/aliases

from:

alias net-pf-10 ipv6

to

alias net-pf-10 off

There is a tweak for firefox that disables ipv6 also...

I hope this helps!

[Bug 164126] Re: no shortcuts information on the desktop effects ui

2007-11-20 Thread Nanley Chery
I was intrigued enough by this suggestion to make a mockup.
Clicking on an option on the right side would play a video on the box. The
video would give a tutorial of the features in each section.
*None would describe the metacity shortcuts.
*Normal would describe the default compiz shortcuts.
*Extra would describe the extra shortcuts enabled (like shift-switcher).
*Not sure what custom would do yet.
Clicking preview would play the video in fullscreen mode. If possible maybe the
video could be made on the spot, using the users current configuration.
I don't know if the world is yet ready for this layout. =)

But as I said earlier I'll have to close this bug. A better place to put
this information is on the Ubuntu Blueprint
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+specs), Ubuntu Idea Pool
(http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=306), and the development
mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

[Bug 53387] Re: Manual WPA networks doesn't connect at boot

2007-11-20 Thread Saïvann Carignan
** Changed in: wpasupplicant (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Triaged

** Description changed:

When configuring a wireless network to use WPA outside Gnome Network-
manager applet, the network will not reconnect after a reboot without a
  "/etc/init.d/networking restart"

I moved over to nw-manager for the time being. I set up
/etc/network/interfaces with this type of configuration for ath0

  iface ath0 auto
  iface ath0 inet dhcp
  wpa-driver madwifi
  wpa-ssid homezone
  wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
  wpa-psk "quoted passphrase"
  # wpa-psk 0001231203

- I didn't have time to try out the wpa-conf method but I did try wpa-psk
- in passphrase and hexidecimal mode with identical results.
-
- The only thing I can think of is trying to use pre-up commands to start
- wpasupplicant before it does dhcp.
-
- **Workaround : It has been found that renaming the file
- /etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules so that udev won't read the rules
- from that file actually solves the problem.
+ Renaming the file /etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules so that udev won't
+ read the rules from that file actually solves the problem. It looks like
+ udev starts the network in a way that prevent WPA drivers to load
+ correctly.

[Bug 163348] Re: Terminal and the D key

2007-11-20 Thread MisterMarq
Just to add. I found many others with the same issue and I finally fixed
mine by typing the commands into gedit and running them as programs.
Slower but the only effective way I found to get around the letter d not
working.

DO NOT UN-COMMENT-OUT:

#do not bell on tab-completion
#set bell-style none
#set bell-style visible

By putting the comment #s back in the letter d now works as normal. What
does the system beep have to do with this key?

[Bug 138343] Re: evince consumes a lot of memory (1.5 GB VM)

2007-11-20 Thread SFeek
I have this same issue on P4 1.4GHz machine with 256Mb of RAM. It slows
my cursor to a crawl as it quickly uses all of the remaining free RAM,
and finally crashes. I can see in /var/logs/messages where the system is
trying very hard to recover the "lost" memory after the program closes.
The system returns to normal after a short period of drive activity.

Please don't close Baltix bugs reported by main baltix developer.

This bug can be fixed in newly released Pingus 0.7.2 (there are several memry
leaks fixed in 0.7.2, look at
http://svn.berlios.de/viewcvs/pingus/trunk/pingus/ChangeLog?rev=3407&r1=3241&r2=3407
), also this bug isn't related to Debian bug #278866 .
Please look more serious before closing important bugs as wontfix - serious
memory leaks are always very important, as can cause system freeze and data
loss !

[Bug 139337] Re: after upgrading from feisty to gutsy, /dev/mapper no longer contains my LVM volume group

2007-11-20 Thread Mark Stinson
My Fiesty->Gutsy Upgrade wouldn't let me back in after the screensaver
kicked in. I had to hard shutdown my machine. Here's an email I just
sent to some of my friends (the irony that I've all typed up for you
already. LOL)

   1. I booted with the Xubuntu 7.10 alternate CD started rescue mode. No sense
going back.
   2. I chose my / partition for the shell and manually mounted all my Logical
Disks to there respective mount points (/usr, so forth.) which used
/dev/mapper/vg_pool-lv_usr convention
   3. I ran `apt-get upgrade` which after a while told me to run ` dpkg
--configure -a`. That completed the Upgrade.
   4. When it rebooted, it still gave me the error about not finding or cannot
e2fsck the LVM devices
   5. I checked the /etc/fstab which had them as /dev/mapper/vg_pool-lv_usr
(and so forth). When I `ls /dev/mapper` their names had changed to
/dev/mapper/lvm2|vg_pool|lv_usr (dashes were now vertical pipes with an extra
bit of stuff in the front. What the ??? )
   6. Backed up my fstab and made the corrections with nano editor (no vi
available)
   7. It's alive. ... Well, mostly. I have to manually drop back a kernel
version to my old version. I guess I still need to do that upgrade from 2.6.16
to 2.6.20. Hopefully, I won't kill it again. I'll be doing it in single user
mode.

So apparently, there was some changes to LVM from the "volume groups
- logical volumes" to "disk mgmt | vg | lv". That makes sense so
enterprise and other folks can start mixing legacy and future LVM
revisions.

UPDATE: I booted the machine with the previous kernel 2.6.16, did an
`init 1` for single user. I then re-ran `apt-get upgrade` followed by `
dpkg --configure -a` again. Guess there was some more configuring to do.
At the very end it generated the /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic. Now
I can boot just fine. Now I need to figure out why my X.org is consuming
100% - 135% utilization on my dual core.

Hope this helps you out. Mark S.

[Bug 128421] Re: Cannot boot when video adapter set as PCI in BIOS

2007-11-20 Thread Githlar
I've finally fixed this bug. I now have a new and better video card, but
I'm pretty sure this would fix my original problem. It was a problem
with with the onboard Intel video. Apparently, modprobe was loading what
it needed for the Intel graphics (because I can't turn them completely
off) and then tried loading my video card and freaked out. In order to
fix it, I just blacklisted the Intel drivers.

Open /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Add to the end of the file:

blacklist agpgart
blacklist intel_agp

[Bug 163530] Re: FTBFS: asis_2005-5 on hardy/i386

2007-11-20 Thread Emmet Hikory
Thank you for the debdiff. As asis is building libasis-dev, I'd much
prefer a patch to the build system that used the internal implementation
to meet the build dependency, rather than build-depending on the last
version of the package. I'm not certain that the proposed solution will
continue to work properly if asis is upgraded to a new upstream version.
If this doesn't prove possible, it may be required to bootstrap, but I
suspect it would benefit from some API test or double-build to ensure
that the released asis-programs is compiled against the internal
libasis-dev, rather than the one used for the bootstrap.

[Bug 164269] Re: [Gutsy] Grub takes time to load

2007-11-20 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks for this bug report.

Did you test this multiple times with Gutsy? Sometimes a computer will
do a complete BIOS test before booting the HD and this is normal. Since
GRUB is a simple bootloader in the MBR, I don't think that this is a
GRUB bug, so I want to be sure before to confirm some details about this
bug report.

[Bug 136822] Re: One broken USB storage device can hang the entire USB subsystem

2007-11-20 Thread John Gilmore
I can help you debug this for only about another week -- I've borrowed
the external disk drives that make it fail reliably, and I'll have to
return them soon. I'm happy to help debug it, and almost as happy to
let it go for another day, if you can't get to this in time. I'm a free
software volunteer author too.

Any suggestions on what I should do next?  I can reproduce the hang;
what data can I gather during the hang that would help you? The system
runs fine except that when a process touches the failing USB disk
device, or mounted filesystem, it hangs. Most of those hangs can be
interrupted with a kill -9, but not all.

Is there a better kernel for me to reproduce it in? I'm running stock
Gutsy x86.

[Bug 62986] Re: debconf-apt-progress hangs sometimes on SMP systems due to racy debconf protocol handling

2007-11-20 Thread ChrisKelley
Hi all, I just found this via Google. Was attempting a net install to a
Pentium 4 I just got. The first failure bricked the box. Now I set up
pxe server and it has frozen again. First time was at 5%, now at 6%. Was
using ubuntu gutsy alt cd and this time, xubuntu alt cd from the pxe
server. Not real sure how to go forward. Will keep trying. Next, will
try to tell it to read from the CD-ROM (which the bios/mo-board cannot
boot from). If there is a way I can give more info, please reply.

Oh, wait... Wow, 40~50 minutes after it froze at 6%, it picked up again.
(literally, just this instant) The first time, I selected LAMP server
and some stuff, this time only Xubuntu desktop. Looks like it's running
now.

[Bug 164269] [Gutsy] Grub takes time to load

Yes please. Even though it's not the exact same cause as bug 57875, the
fix to that bug should close this bug too, and on that ground let's call
any crash/doesn't-run/doesn't-download defect of azureus <2.5.0.4 to be
a dupe of 57875.

Thanks for your help triaging these bugs

[Bug 164006] Re: Tracker, wrong parameters for dcraw

2007-11-20 Thread Teudimundo
I reckon that the problem is that tracker is using convert by imagemagick to
thumbnail images.
Convert uses a delegate (/usr/lib/ImageMagick-6.2.4/config/delegates.xml) that
is using dcraw with those
parameters.

I suspect that tracker should be probably smarter about RAW files.

The annoying thing is that I had "Create thumbnails" not checked. If I am right
with the problem
this could be related to the bug #147486 for which some settings seem to be
ignored.

Should-I mark this bug as duplicate of bug 57875 ?

[Bug 111988] Re: When I try to start azureus I get: "exec: 40: java: not found"

2007-11-20 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks for this bug report

In order to work, azureus needs a Java environment. Most probably that
Stephan didn't have java configured correctly the first time.

rubbsdecvik : In order to get more information about your problem, can
you do this :

1. Install/Reinstall sun-java6-jre | You can do this by typing this on a
terminal "sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre"
2. Configure your system to use Java | Tou can do this by typing this on a
temrinal "sudo update-alternatives --config java" and choose the Sun java in
the list

After these 2 steps, can you confirm if you still have this issue?

Note : The only one azureus version that doesn't crash at start is the
one from Gutsy backports version 2.5.0.4-1ubuntu3~gutsy1

[Bug 158989] Re: local device not working on some client

2007-11-20 Thread Steve Jackson
This is happening seemingly randomly for me too. The contents of
/var/run/ltspfs_fstab on the thin client is very similar to that shown
by Enrico.

In my case, ssh -S /var/run/ldm_socket_vt7_192.168.141.254 192.168.141.254
"/usr/sbin/ltspfsmounter /tmp add" yields the same response:
X connection to localhost:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
Error: /tmp/.username-ltspfs/tmp is not mounted

Running mount on the server shows an entry for the next terminal to mine, where
local devices work:
ltspfs on /tmp/.hall2-ltspfs/floppy0 type fuse.ltspfs
(rw,nosuid,nodev,user=hall2)
/tmp/.hall2-ltspfs/floppy0 on /media/hall2/floppy0 type none (rw,bind)

But there is no entry for mine or other logged-on terminals. On other
days it has been a different terminal that works. I speculate that it
might be the first to log on that works, and the rest do not. I will
explore that.

The /tmp/.-ltspfs/ folder contains a folder with the name of
the device that won't mount, but no contents (and another for tmp, after
the ssh debugging command above).

[Bug 164265] Transferring AAC files to iPod is broken

2007-11-20 Thread Caleb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When I attach my iPod and drag an AAC song to it on Rhythmbox, it
transfers very slowly and with high CPU usage, as if it were transcoding
the file. I confirmed that the file transferred to the iPod was
different from the original stored in my music library folder using md5
sums, and also listened to the song on my computer from the iPod's
drive. The song sounded pretty bad. When the iPod was ejected and
disconnected, the songs wouldn't play at all... the total time indicator
showed the correct time for a moment, but it would instantly go to the
next song without playing at all.

RE: [Bug 164263] Re: Cannot unlock screen on KDE 4 RC1

2007-11-20 Thread Andrés Rassol

Hi Corey,

I'm aware of the fact that the packages I'm using are from PPAs but at
the end of the guide that i mentioned
(http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde4-rc1.php) it says "Packages are
also being uploaded to hardy and gutsy-backports." so I thought that it
could also affect Hardy. If you still think that my bug report is
invalid then forget about it. ;-)

I will try to report the problem to the user that makes the packages
although I'm not sure how.

Bye,

Andrés

[Bug 127101] Re: laptop hangs when switching video mode

2007-11-20 Thread Christian Niemeyer
Hi!

Not sure, if this will help you, but I can confirm this behaviour
exactly on a HP Laptop (G 6000 series, G 6050EG) with NVIDIA graphics
card with only shared memory.

It happens with the nv as well with binary nvidia driver (from
repositorys and from the website).

I think it's related to ACPI, BIOS, IRQ stuff etc. Just guessing.

Very strange for me was, when typing e.g. "ls -la" in an non-graphical
VT. By the third time doing this, the laptop would definitely freeze, no
Sysrq, nothing. Can hear the hard drive shortly than the fan goes on,
then no proof of liffe anymore. Just hard-reboot.

Also it happened when disabling the framebuffer with fb=false
vga=normal.

I works for a while quite well when booting with (nosplash) noapic nolapic
noapm pnpbios=off pci=conf1 noirqdebug
Sometimes VTs are still messed up, not readable text or just frame buffer
"snow" and then freeze again.

Hope this information can help you. I guess this bug is not completely
intel-driver-related, as my experience was. Tested also with live-cds
from edgy and dapper and on feisty and gutsy installed systems.

sorry guys, i'm having the some-colors-messed-up issue when playing

 - Using the intel driver
 - problems occur in all video players I use (vlc & totem)
 - problems occur regardless of the "desktop effects" setting

Yes. All tests passed. Nothing suspicious as far as I can tell.

Come to think of it, yes, it does appear to have overheat symptoms.

So, no hard work.

Radeon.

[Bug 162971] Re: Default image viewer (Eye of Gnome) can't load JPEG exports from default PDF viewer (Evince)

2007-11-20 Thread Troy James Sobotka
Upon further review, it appears that Evince is not exporting the file to
the extension named.

In this instance, choosing the "Save as..." in Evince failed to save the
image as a JPG and wrote it as a PNG (probably the source image format
in the PDF.)

Is this in fact perhaps two possible bugs? One for the Evince not
exporting as per file extension and one for Eye of Gnome not identifying
images based on their headers as opposed to their extensions (as per
GIMP and other display apps)?
