[Bug 164275] Black screen with 1x PowerColor x800GT graphics card

2007-11-21 Thread zoidberg
Public bug reported:

This is from this post on the Ubuntu forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=618205
Specs:

2x 160GB WD SATA 3 GB/s 16MB drives (One drive is where the windows install is,
and the other is for my music library. Both are single partition drives.)
1x 80GB Samsung SATA 3 GB/s drive (I deleted the former windows partiton from
this drive in the disk manager and did not format it. This is also the drive I
want to install Ubuntu on.)
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 64 bit processor
Asus A8N SLI-Deluxe Mobo
1x PowerColor x800GT graphics card
X-fi Xtreme Music sound card
2GB (4x512MB) Corsair ValueSelect DDR 400 RAM
DVD/CDRW drive
Floppy
Viewsonic VA702b 17 monitor

Okay, so on to the troubles I'm having. I downloaded 7.1 I grabbed the
64 bit version and wasn't sure if that was the right decision or not.

Basically I burned the ISO onto a CD, ran the CD in windows and then
rebooted, changing the BIOS to load from CD before loading from an hdd.
When I selected install / run it spools the progress bar then the screen
switches to a screen that flashes too quickly for me to be able to read
it (like some BIOS screens) then my monitor goes black. The computer is
still on, but I have an amber light on the monitor. It momentarily says
no signal on the monitor before it goes to the black screen w/ the amber
light by the way.

When I tried to verify the CD it did the exact same thing. I tried
switching around how I had the hdd's connected to the mobo and had the
same issues.

It didn't even boot into the safe graphics mode.

The user then installed Mandriva Linux which worked.
Does the Ubuntu Live CD come with the ATI proprietary drivers or not?
How is it possible that the safe graphics mode doesn't work if the loading bar
is correctly displayed?

I'm not sure if posting this here as a bug was the right thing to do, but I
think that not even being able to use the Live CD in safe graphics mode is a
big problem.
(I actually also have a problem with the Gutsy Live CD: Bug #133192, but safe
graphics mode works at least.)

Why doesn't the Live CD also offer a text installation mode?

Re: [Bug 71004] Re: [kubuntu edgy and feisty] usplash_down causes shutdown to hang

2007-11-21 Thread Jørgen Best
Op woensdag 21 november 2007, schreef Matt Zimmerman:
At what point during shutdown does it hang? Is it when usplash_down
runs, or sometime earlier or later?

The white screen shows up when changing the graphics/resolution when changing
from X tot usplash or from uspslash to text (so at different times). It
should have something to do with how the graphics of the usplash screen is
done in relation to these specific graphical cards/drivers.

The behavior of this bug is inconsequent. Sometimes shutting down goes
allright (in my case). Most times not. It very much looks like that the
driver/graphical card ends up in an undifined state where it was not designed
for (so dangerous).

What happens is that the screen get's black and then slowly get's more and
more bright (as if it's black but with very bright settings). I think you 'll
need the propper hardware to test and solve this one (e.g. Toshiba satelite).

I do prevere to see what's loaded and unloaded so I didn't pay recent
attention to the usplash bug.

[Bug 161837] Re: Please merge ksimus from Debian unstable to hardy

2007-11-21 Thread Emmet Hikory
Thanks for the debdiff. There are a few things I notice on review:

1) Because you've changed to dh_icons, dh_iconcache is not a remaining change
2) The debdiff contains apparent modifications to the build system
(Makefile.am, Makefile.in, etc.) that are not reported in debian/changelog: are
these intentional?

Hi Christian,

This bug was very specific to the Intel driver, and has been fixed. If
you've got issues with an NVIDIA card, you're seeing a different bug.

Please open a different bug against either the open-source / proprietary
driver, depending on which you're using.

I have tried to kill compiz before suspend but it does not help.
I have tried to change some parameters in acpi according to forum quotes

[Bug 164269] Re: [Gutsy] Grub takes time to load

2007-11-21 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Can you also confirm that this 1-2 minutes happens BEFORE the Grub menu
appear? Note that Grub is only the bootloader of ubuntu, so it's
actually what starts Linux Ubuntu. If 1-2 minutes is the time that it
takes before you can use your mouse, than we would speak about GDM (
Gnome Display Manager ) and not GRUB.

If it clearly takes 1-2 minutes between the BIOS and GRUB, can-you tell
here what you can see on your screen during that 1-2 minutes? If you
have a camera, you can take a photo of your screen and attach it to the
bug?

Can you also tells approximately the percentage of time this bug happens
on Gutsy? 50% of the times?

And finally, can you confirm that you did multiple reboot with Feisty
and never had this problem?

Thanks for this information.

Hi Nanley.

Thanks for your quick response. I am new to Ubuntu, and so if I did not

selected for the SIS662 does not work properly. Would you please take the
time to explain to me why that is not a bug?

Thanks

[Bug 158202] Re: Ubuntu installer crashes to a blank screen

2007-11-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Colin, yes this sounds muchly like bug 127008 (install from alternate CD
+ issue during configuration of xserver-xorg). In fact I anticipated
this might occur:

One thing I've wondered is other laptops with different gfx chipsets
may be experiencing problems like these (but with different symptoms.)
So, it'd be good to keep an eye out for any bugs that are occurring for
non-intel laptops doing the alternate text install and appearing late in
the install process; we could expand this patch to include those cases
as well.

I suspect this may be one of those cases.

Mike Chapman, can you please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`? I'll
use review this to determine your graphics chipset, and adjust xresprobe
to also apply our fix for it.

Of course, for Hardy, it's likely we'll end up dropping use of xresprobe
entirely, thus making this issue irrelevant, but I'd still like to
ensure we have everything to fix the bug even if we don't drop
xresprobe, for completeness' sake.

[Bug 152463] Re: Suspend/Resume stops working if the ATI restricted driver is enabled

2007-11-21 Thread Joerg Delker
After upgrading to Gutsy, suspend/resume (ram disk) does NOT work
anymore on my Acer Ferrari 4005.

Currently, I can't see a relation to the ATI restricted drivers, because
I tested without the drivers in init=/bin/sh state and have very similar
behavior:

I'm initiating suspend with s2both. The machine displays suspend information
and finally shuts down (power led blinking orange).
Pressing any key after that DOES awake the system, but screen remains blank.
However, as HDD LED indicates the OS has been revived and a CTRL-ALT-DEL does
shutdown/reboot eventually.

Conclusion: I suspect not the ATI drivers being source of the problem but a
general (kernel) problem!?
As already mentioned, this worked perfectly with Feisty, so something must have
changed with the Update which broke suspend/resume on this platform.

This is with linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic.

Any clues welcome.

2007-11-21 Thread Sam Brightman
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 57875 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/57875

I have been absent from this for a while, and in no way helpful in
producing the fix, but I must say that I don't think these bugs should
all be marked dups. They are different bugs, and should stay as such. My
understanding is that the fix effectively just drops support for gcj -
for some people this is not acceptable (it is for me, though, for now).
If support for gcj was ever needed again, for example, these bugs would
most definitely be separate, and we've only lost information by
conflating them.

I came across this problem for this first time today -- it was the first
time that I have done any heavy browsing through folders containing MP3

suggests typing killall nautilus into the terminal... this resets
Nautilus but the problem recurs after I start browsing through MP3s

2007-11-21 Thread Saïvann Carignan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 57875 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/57875

vinboy : The reason is that ubuntu aims to bring package for a lot of
architectures like AMD64, PowerPC, i386 and others. For that purpose,
Ubuntu need to works with the source code. It's not possible to include
a binary package into repositories because they all works with source
code only. This is also important to use source code as any problem can
be fixed within the code at any time.

But don't be afraid, azureus has been a very hard package to maintain,
but it seems now that all serious problems are fixed with the latest
release from ubuntu Gutsy backports.

I suggest you to install the Gutsy Backports version
2.5.0.4-1ubuntu3~gutsy1 which fix this problem.

[Bug 93360] Re: Dhcdbd: message_handler: message handler not found under /com/redhat/dhcp/eth1 for sub-path eth1.dbus.get.reason

2007-11-21 Thread Vesa K
I use ADSL via external wireless router which work as DHCP-server.

My errors was gone after following changes:
1) I removed link-local 169.254.0.0 from /etc/networks file. (I use DHCP so
probably I dont need it).
2) I add eth0 to /etc/network/interfaces file (before eth0 found automaticly)
and see dhcp parameter.

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

I make both changes same time so I dont know which effect this error. I feel
2nd change should be enough.
Problems looks related too early network trafic before box have correct IP
address from DHCP server.

Cons. ad-hoc networks not work after these changes if DHCP server not available.
I dont know is this usefull for internal wireless routers user.

I just start last week with linux so be careful.

# We come with our own bundled Error.pm. It's not in the set of default

[Bug 164290] nvidia driver selects non-existing CRT monitor as default instead of the DFP on the laptop

2007-11-21 Thread Emilian Bold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After updating to the nvidia driver the screen went blank (though I
could head the gdm boot sound).

After looking into a terminal in the Xorg logs I noticed the nvidia
module was detecting two displays: CRT and DFP (DFP-0 actually). Note
that there was no second display connected to the laptop. Furthermore,
the module selected the CRT as the default display, hance the blank
screen.

I had to hand-edit the xorg.conf file and added the option
ConnectedMonitor DFP. This seems to fix the problem.

Please note that the display worked just fine with the default (nv I
assume) driver and the proprietary nvidia module also worked just fine

[Bug 80766] Re: j2se1.4-amd64 jre crashes when running azureus 2.5.0.2

2007-11-21 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Thanks for this bug report.

A new upstream release 2.5.0.4-1ubuntu3~gutsy1 which fixes crash
problems can be installed in Linux Ubuntu Gutsy with backports
repositories enabled. Can you install that release and confirm if you
can still reproduce that bug?

[Bug 163342] Re: emacs desktop save/restore file appears to be locked

2007-11-21 Thread Pete Phillips
OK - got this figured. blush

It looks like I had used the customisation interface within emacs to
turn the desktop-save mode on as well, but I also had it in my init.el
file.

by removing it from the init file that fixed my problems.
