[Bug 153635] Re: [vmware] nm-applet "No Network Devices Have Been Found" error
I am completely frustrated at trying to get my networking operational. I used to have the VMWare Player (v 5 something) and I thought, "what the heck, I'll buy VMWare Workstation 6.02 (build 59824) to be able to create virtual machines, etc. I also had Ubuntu 5.10 working great, and networking was fine. Now I have changed so much, I can't even get back to where I was. I am also getting the "No network devices have been found" from the nm- applet. When I run System->Administration->Network Tools I see only a loopback device listed. There is no "eth0" or other devices. I have an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network connector and I have tried automatic bridging, NATing, and even trying to map the wireless card directly to vmnet0. None of this works. I have installed vmware tools and had no compiler errors. This is a brand new installation of Ubuntu 7.04 because I couldn't get through all the compile problems on 7.10. Shouldn't a network device exist even before tools is installed? I have attached a copy of my /var/log/syslog in case anyone can see anything. [Bug 173591] tool for fixing a LP bug with a .crash attachment
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apport Sometimes, people attach the .crash file to a bug report, which is something the retracers cannot handle. The retracers do not even see them in the first place, since these bugs are not automatically tagged. We need a small tool to fix this which uses the existing apport machinery. It should probably be integrated into the CLI tool of bug 124338. $ apport-collect --fix-monolithic 12345 This would: - Look for a .crash attachment and download it. - Load it into an ApportReport object - Resubmit it to the existing bug, change the description appropriately, and set the retracing tags. ** Affects: apport (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium Assignee: Martin Pitt (pitti) Status: Triaged ** Changed in: apport (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium Assignee: (unassigned) => Martin Pitt (pitti) Status: New => Triaged -- tool for fixing a LP bug with a .crash attachment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173591 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 147163] Re: Evolution does not notify on missed alarms
I think the importance of this bug should be at least "medium", because this feature is critical for who relies on calendar alerts all day, and this bug is really annoying... However, I have discovered (at least on Ubuntu Gutsy - Gnome 2.20.1), where the problem is, I think. This problem happens when a Gnome session is saved at least one time, more precisely when session is saved manually or automatically: It seems that "evolution-alarm-notify" daemon has some problem with Gnome session management, and it won't "reconnect" properly to calendar events on reboot when it is recovered by session manager, causing the daemon to lost ALL the events created BEFORE last session end. For me this behaviour is critical!! But, as a workaround, it's simple to resolve doing this simple steps: 1) Open System->Administration->System monitor and terminate these 3 processes: evolution-alarm-notify evolution-data-server-1.12 (this is not present all time) evolution-exchange-storage 2) Open System->Preferences->Sessions, go to "Session options" tab and manually save the current session clicking the big button 3) Go to the "Start programs" tab (the FIRST tab, my ubuntu system is in Italian so I don't know how this tab is called on English systems...), select "Evolution Alarm Notifier" voice and click "Modify" button on the right: in the "Command" line that will appear, add the option --sm-disable to the command line: on Ubuntu Gustsy, consequentially, this will be: /usr/lib/evolution/2.12/evolution-alarm-notify --sm-disable 4) Click Ok, close all and logout or reboot the system: from now on Evolution Notifier will work like a charm. I hope this strange behaviour will be fixed soon, however disabling session management for evolution-alarm-notify daemon fixes the problem perfectly. Cheers. Re: [Bug 139070] Re: [Gutsy] Ralink 2573 usb adapter does not work out of the box
All you need to do is compile the rt73 serial monkey drivers and it starts working. Here is the HOWTO I followed: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=400236. After following the howto, it would still drop my connection at random times, but at least I didn't have to reboot. Also, by using the howto, it for some reason rendered the wicd utility useless. I had to do things by commandline. But the good news is, I tried using the serialmonkey rutilt (instead of wicd), and now everything works great. No more commandline stuff and no more dropped connections. Following the above-mentioned howto doesn't require you to do anything with your kernel (like recompile). All you need to do is have the kernel source on your machine. [Bug 152187] Re: Serial Wacom tablet fails to return from ACPI suspend to RAM
I had the same problem on a Toshiba R25. I poked around a little bit and it turns out the problem was introduced in kernel 2.6.21-rc4 and filed a kernel bug report: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9487 Until it's fixed, the workaround I hinted at in the report (commenting that single line) works at least for my system. I'm pretty sure that it's NOT doing the right thing, though - to be honest I don't even understand what the code does. I've made the workaround available as a kernel package that you might want to try - we'll find out if launchpad supports 20M attachments. But be sure you have a working kernel in case something goes horribly wrong - the package will replace the existing gutsy kernel image. ** Attachment added: "linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic_2.6.22-14.46_i386.deb" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10697568/linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic_2.6.22-14.46_i386.deb -- Serial Wacom tablet fails to return from ACPI suspend to RAM https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152187 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 173576] Persistent mode not supporting Vesa
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: casper This concerns a USB flash drive install of Gutsy (7.10). In live mode from CD or USB the boot option "xforcevesa" can be used and the Ubuntu desktop is displayed. However, in persistent mode (casper- rw), the "xforcevesa" option does not work. I have tried adding both "xforcevesa" or "vga=xyz" (e.g. vga=771) options, but the display is lost as soon as X is loaded. Note, the splash screen shows and one can toggle to a text console, but when X loads, you get a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner and the keyboard is no longer active. I have been able to produce the same issue on three different machines, an Amilo Pro laptop, a Thinkpad T22, and a thin client. These machines are often not properly recognised and that is the main problem, but if they could at least use Vesa in the mean time they would be usable. The issue means a USB installation cannot run on these machines at all, unless somebody knows a workaround. ** Affects: casper (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Persistent mode not supporting Vesa https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173576 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 118514] Re: 12-hour clock type not functioning in Gnome panel clock of zh_CN locale
OK, that bug has been fixed in Ubuntu Gutsy. Many thanks, guys! Firstly, I must mention that the option to choose between 12/24 hour of Gnome Panel's clock may be available only to some locale, for example, zh-CN. Secondly, I was not complaining, though it seemed to be. I do understand the spirit of free software, and I submit patches for several open- source project written in Python. I'm happy to patch a program or fix a bug, if I have the ability. But I'm not actually a programmer, just an experienced user which is lack of many capabilities, including C/C++ programming skills, therefore I make suggestions and submit tickets of bugs in other time. And I do understand that "sit and wait" is not the right answer to a problem without comprehensive attention. (It spent half a year to finally fix the bug, didn't it?) So I provided a hacky yet feasible solution to the problem. That's it. [Bug 162541] Re: Google-earth display problems with Compiz
It seems that all the people experiencing this bug are using one of the open-source drivers, either ati or intel (or i810). The free drivers do not yet do redirected-direct-rendering, so apps using 3d (such as google earth) interact badly with Compiz. The app using 3d (google earth, in this case) won't be composited correctly; it will simply draw straight to the screen, rather than drawing to an offscreen buffer that Compiz can then combine with the other windows & draw to the screen. Marking this as WontFix: it's certainly a bug, but it's (a) not a bug in Compiz - it's a limitation of the graphics drivers, and (b) the extensive effort required to fix the drivers is not going to be done in Ubuntu - it'll be done upstream by the Xorg developers. If anyone can duplicate this using non-free drivers (nvidia) or with google earth running in Xgl (and *not* on the underlying :0 X server) please reopen this bug. ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium Status: Confirmed => Won't Fix -- Google-earth display problems with Compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162541 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 58430] Re: Command-line recovery required when fsck reports an unexpectedy inconsistency
Please don't just fsck automatically for folks. This just happened to me, and I ended up with a broken system by following the directions and running fsck and having to hold down the "enter" key for a LONG time while ominous messages flew by offering to remove illegal blocks, duplicate blocks, etc. If I hadn't been wanting to get to bed, or if the data on the system had been more critical, I would have wanted to first make a copy of the disk with a rescue disk, dd and ssh so I could 1) investigate just what had happened to the system in the first place, to hopefully keep this from happening to me or someone else 2) be able to try alternate repair strategies. It may well be that the default option for the majority of inexperienced users should be to offer to do an automatic fsck. But given the likelyhood of severe data loss, I think we really need to also offer them an option to stop, make a copy, consult an expert, or somehow deal with the situation manually as best they can. And in either case, I think we should do whatever we can to maintain a log of the results of the fsck. That will probably be hard in many circumstances, but we could at least tell folks to stop, think about how they got there, and take notes for future reference. Some will be able to run the fsck via a serial port or something. It would also be nice if fsck offered some statistics at the end - max and min block number affected, # repairs, # repairs refused, or whatever to characterize what happened for future forensics or bug investigations. Just remember, some folks will REALLY CARE about the data. -- Command-line recovery required when fsck reports an unexpectedy inconsistency https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/58430 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 144621] Re: iwl4965 drops out from time to time (Santa Rosa)
Thank you for the patch, Marco. Though WPA still seems to be less stable than WEP or unprotected networks. But I found out that I have problems connecting to certain unprotected networks at all.. Just wasn't able to get connected.
