[Bug 179660] New versions of packages are not backported
Public bug reported: While using Ubuntu, I bump into this problem again and again. Let's take an example: the VICE Commodore emulator. The version in the Gutsy repository is 1.20, even when version 1.22 is also out. What's more, it is included in Hardy! Now, why do I have to upgrade my WHOLE operating system (note: Hardy is not even alpha), just to receive a new version? I have downloaded the source, and it compiled perfectly under Gutsy. So what is the reason behind not including it into Gutsy? And VICE isn't the only such application. Other examples can be found in bugs #52169, #2596 and #129043. And I am sure there are many more. UQM was also like this around Dapper/Edgy. Now, I may understand that packages upon which other packages depend are not upgraded / backported. However, we are talking about end- applications here (apps in the bug reports above, VICE and UQM are like that, too). Nothing would break if you upgraded them whenever a new version came out. Ok, don't do this for LTS releases; but for others, please, update the stable versions, and don't force your users to use outdated software. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- New versions of packages are not backported https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179660 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 179552] Re: gnome-session hangs on log in
I've tried to find out which programs constitute to those pids in .xsession-errors, but I've been unable to find out that. However. if the pid of gnome-session is x, then the first of the pids in .xsession- errors is a little bit higher than x, maybe x+[34], and the and the next is maybe x + [8-10]. I wrote a small shell script that would do ps ax to a file every 0.01 second, and between two file outputs, it seems that those pid hase managed to both start and disappear, so it happens very fast. What is very odd, is that once when I did ran this script and logged in, it did work! Then I immediately logged out and in, and since then it has not worked again. :-( ps ax reveals that gconfd-2 is running, with pid=x + ~50-60, and gnome- keyring-daemon, pid = x - [1-3] Hope this could be of some relevance. What would probably be helpful is to found out which programs constitute to those pids, but I am not skilled enough in Linux to find out that by myself unfortunately. [Bug 178702] Re: Please sync xfonts-wqy 0.9.9-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)
I am rejecting this bug as I've just uploaded 0.9.9-2ubuntu1, merging Debian changes and adding proper conffile handling. The changelog is: xfonts-wqy (0.9.9-2ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low * Merge from Debian unstable, dropping all previous Ubuntu changes: - Build-depend on xfonts-utils ( 4.0.3). Hardy has high enough version so the version requirement can be dropped. - Build-depend on debhelper (= 5.0.7) instead of (= 5.0.31). This is an error in previous merges, because debhelper (= 5.0.31) is needed for dh_installxfonts to recognize the new font layout used in X11R7. - Install fonts in /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/ directory instead of /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/. This is a completely bogus change, as pre-X11R7 layout uses /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/, and new layout uses /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc/ as Debian specified. The /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/ directory doesn't seem to be recognized by anything. This change actually breaks the package because fonts.dir and fonts.alias files are not automatically generated, and X won't load the fonts from the wrong directory. * Move old conffile handling from postinst script to preinst script. Also check if the conffile is locally modified. If it is, back it up and tell the user to review the local changes and add it to the new conffile instead of just delete it. (Debian bug #457423) * Change the Maintainer field in debian/control to Ubuntu MOTU Developers, and move Debian's maintainer to XSBC-Original-Maintainer field, according to the specification. -- Ming Hua [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue, 01 Jan 2008 05:35:54 -0600 ** Changed in: xfonts-wqy (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- Please sync xfonts-wqy 0.9.9-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/178702 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 147045] Re: gnome-appearance-properties hogs processor even after close
I have the same behaviour as Raymond: removing ~/.gtkrc-2.0 solves the issue. I've done a few more experiments: 1. If .gtkrc-2.0 exists but is empty, the bug does not appear. 2. If I launch gnome-appearance-properties with a non-empty .gtkrc-2.0 file, the bug triggers every time. Once it is triggered, if I remove the .gtkrc-2.0 file or empty it while g-a-p is still running (either the window is still open or I closed it but g-a-p is still running), g-a-p reacts almost immediately and the CPU goes back to 0%. 3. If I launch g-a-p with no (or an empty) .gtkrc-2.0 file, the bug is not triggered, even if I create the file once it is running. -- gnome-appearance-properties hogs processor even after close https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147045 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 147045] Re: gnome-appearance-properties hogs processor even after close
I've been able to narrow the problem a little more. It seems the actual line in my .gtkrc-2.0 which causes the problem is the following: include /usr/share/themes/Clearlooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc If I start g-a-p with a .gtkrc-2.0 containing this line (alone or with the rest of my original file), the bugs triggers every time, and the CPU goes to 100%. If I overwrite the .gtkrc-2.0 file while g-a-p is hung with a version without the line, the CPU goes back to ~0%, and g-a-p exits correctly. I've attached strace to g-a-p while it is hung, at it seems caught in a loop. I've attached the fragment of the trace which is repeated endlessly (I don't know which line can be considered the beginning of the loop though). ** Attachment added: Fragment of a trace repeated by g-a-p when the bug is triggered. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/11109694/g-a-p.trace -- gnome-appearance-properties hogs processor even after close https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147045 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
