[Bug 124801] Re: Connection hangs (stops working) at high traffic using rtl8187 driver

At: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=299642 ; more precisely at
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=296812#p296812
it is said:
I can confirm problems with rtl8187 in vanilla kernels 2.6.23 and 2.6.24-rc1,
especially short operation range due to problems with rate control (bit rate
goes up and stay there even when you have transmission failures because there's
no accounting of retries or failures in the driver). This was already reported
to the developers but there's no obvious fix for that using the current
mac80211 rate controller. As a workaround, you can manually set the bit rate to
a lower value using the "rate" command in iwconfig.

that should be something like:
iwconfig wlan0 rate 5.5M auto

+ In Ubuntu 7.04 non latin (cyrillic) symbols in filenames seems like a

dies and I see this error in the terminal:

The program 'gecko' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 89946 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 180493] nmbd shuts down when network disconnected

2008-01-04 Thread Troy C
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

There's probably a good reason for this behavior, but it sure is
annoying!

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start samba services, ensure nmbd is running. with `ps faux | grep nmbd`
2. `tail -f /var/log/samba/log.nmbd &` <-- observe
3. disable networking in nm-applet.
4. the log will eventually say, "reload_interfaces: No subnets to listen to.
Shutting down.."

Expected results:
nmbd runs until told otherwise

Here are a few brief discussions(?) elsewhere about this issue:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg41675.html (contains a patch,
but was supposed to be for version 3.0.5pre2)
http://lists.apple.com/archives/macos-x-server/2006/Mar/msg01363.html
http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba-technical/2002-June/022340.html

Here's a quick 'n dirty potential fix (the samba code just looked way
too nice not to try :) but it may have undesirable side effects. I'm
not an expert by any means!

[Bug 71212] Re: System hangs when copying to NFS mounts

2008-01-04 Thread Nick Fishman
I encountered the exact same problem, and just like sammiam wrote, it
was the DFE-350TX+ adapter that caused the problem. When I switched to
using an onboard network interface on a server, NFS worked like a charm.

I was using Gutsy with the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel, by the way, so the
problem with the 8139 driver is very much still alive.

[Bug 180463] Re: gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV in idle_populate_func()

This is a bug in gtk+2.0's new Recent Files feature. The function

recursion. Debdiff which in theory corrects this will follow shortly.

- 0.18, and as the list below indicates a lot of improvements have been

+ Monodevelop is currently heading for their 1.0 release, which is planned
+ by end of January. Currently they have their 3 beta release out (0.18).

  Monodevelop is a very nice tool to convince a lot of Windows developers
  to continue to develop in Hardy, since telling them to use Vi/Emacs when
  they are used to Visual Studio is not always popular...

  A small recap of what Monodevelop is:

  MonoDevelop is a free GNOME IDE primarily designed for C# and other .NET
  languages. The main features of MonoDevelop are:

  * Code Completion. MonoDevelop's intelligent code completion
  attempts to complete type, method and field names as you're typing. The
  IDE will automatically get the class information from your source code
  files and from the libraries referenced in your project.

  * Class Management. MonoDevelop has a class viewer which allows you
  to list the classes in your project, their methods, and properties. Your
  namespaces are also kept track of to keep the classes separated.

  * Built-in Help. The .NET documentation and the Gtk# documentation
  are built into MonoDevelop for easy access.

  * Project Support. MonoDevelop comes with built in projects that
  help get you started with your console, Gnome# or Gtk# application.

  * Add-ins. MonoDevelop has a powerful add-in engine, which together
  with a modular API and a complete set of extension points, provides a
  seamless platform upon which to build your own development tools.
  MonoDevelop also provides an Add-in Manager you can use to install add-
  ins from online repositories.

  The latest changelog entries in Monodevelop contains among others the
following:
  * Support for moonlight runtime: projects can target the
Silverlight/Moonlight runtime.
  * The property pad now shows information for solutions projects and
project references.
  * Added support for specifying the C# language version to use to compile
a project.
  * The new project dialog for Packaging and Translation projects now allow
specifying the packages/translations to include.
  * MacOSX support
  * Improved Dock manager
  * Support for VS 2005 Web Application projects
  * ASP.NET Codebehind Generation Improvements
  * Generation of Satellite Assemblies
  * Makefile generation improvements
  * IDE Improvements
  * Deployment of ASP.NET projects
  * C/C++ Support
  * New Database Add-in
  * Auto-generation of XML comment tags
  * Multiple GTK# versions
  * ChangeLog add-in
  * Added regular expression library to the regex toolkit (Mike Krüger).
  * The Gettext add-in now allows choosing which projects and files to
translate (Mike Krüger).
  * Added basic support for reading Visual Studio Silverlight projects
(Ankit Jain).
  * Implemented new command line tool for generating makefiles (Ankit Jain).
  * Highlight missing files and directories (Eric Butler)
  * Added "Include To Project" menu item to Folders that recursively adds
files (Eric Butler).
  * GTK# designer: custom widgets now use by default the project name as
category name,
   in this way widgets are shown in the toolbox in a more organized
way (Lluis Sanchez).
  * When using a gtk# version that supports it, MD now registers a global
exception handler that
   will prevent MD from crashing in case of unexpected exceptions
(Lluis Sanchez).
  * Makefile Integration
  * Standard Header
  * Localization add-in
  * Improved GTK# designer

  A large number of bugs have also been fixed (only showing a subset of bug
fixes here).

[Bug 132106] Re: [gutsy] keyspan serial adapter not detected

2008-01-04 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
The changelog from Ben Collins doesn't mention a licensing issue.

As far as I know, only Debian has issue with the firmwares, other
distros don't, and they are part of the upstream kernel sources. In
fact, the simple fact that Ubuntu kernel source actually ships with the
firmwares included makes it a totally moot point. Not enabling them
doesn't "fix" a possible licence incompatibility since they are shipped
:-)

Hopefully, this is just a mistake from Ben thinking the keyspan_pda
driver is a _replacement_ for the other one. It's not. The keyspan_pda
is a different (and simpler, it's not very reliable at higher speeds)
piece of hardware that uses a different driver. The main keyspan serial
driver is still needed for most keyspan serial adapters (including mines
! Ben, please fix it !!!).

to continue to develop in Hardy, since telling them to use Vi/Emacs when
they are used to Visual Studio is not always popular...

The latest changelog entries in Monodevelop contains among others the following:
* Support for moonlight runtime: projects can target the
Silverlight/Moonlight runtime.
* The property pad now shows information for solutions projects and project
references.
* Added support for specifying the C# language version to use to compile a
project.
* The new project dialog for Packaging and Translation projects now allow
specifying the packages/translations to include.
* MacOSX support
* Improved Dock manager
* Support for VS 2005 Web Application projects
* ASP.NET Codebehind Generation Improvements

Jain).
* Makefile Integration

[Bug 118605] GUTSY freezes too, it's not 3d-accel window managers either

2008-01-04 Thread Bill
Forget compiz, beryl, etc. I have reproduced this with the login
screen only running - using gdm.

I have a Thinkpad t60p, ATI "M56GL [Mobility FireGL V5200]".  Fglrx
8.37.6.  Ubuntu gutsy, kernel 2.6.22-14-rt.

While at the gdmgreeter (login) screen, ssh in to the machine, run ps
-afe | grep gdm --- and see:

UIDPID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
root 25173 1  0 23:28 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/gdm
--config=/etc/gdm/gdm-cdd.conf
root 25174 25173  0 23:28 ?00:00:00 /usr/sbin/gdm
--config=/etc/gdm/gdm-cdd.conf
root 25184 25174  3 23:28 tty9 00:00:03 /usr/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0
-auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp
root 25190 25184  0 23:28 tty9 00:00:00 /usr/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0
-auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp
gdm  25201 25174  1 23:28 ?00:00:01 /usr/lib/gdm/gdmgreeter

You can see it's running on tty9 (vt9). It was running gdm on vt11
(?!?!) earlier, I found the option in cdm-cdd.conf and disabled it (now
set to "VTAllocation=false") but it's still not running on vt7.

I've used UNIX and Linux for nearly 20 years now, and I'm telling you
that VT7 is reflex action - but (and this is really bad) going to vt7
locks up the machine solid. All you can do is ssh in and run 'gdm
restart'.

This is, as far as I'm concerned, HIGH priority. Heck, it's critical.

For those of us who naturally expect vt7 to be the X session, it's an
absolutely critical defect that the machine locks up. If I could still
flip around among the VT's, then I could recover..it would only be
annoying, losing a second or two. But if I'm in a hotel room (one
laptop) or in the airport, I'm going to be holding down the power button
until the thing just shuts off...and then watching it reboot again, as I
need to board a plane.

This is unacceptable :-(

I don't know if it's gdm or Xorg or fglrx, but if we could please please
find the root cause for this one there would be MANY grateful (advanced)
linux users out there.and you can count me among them.

Let me know what (else) I can do to help diagnose this one. Thanks for
listening!

/Bill
