[Bug 153989] Re: Virtualbox OSE doesn't run in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon

2008-01-27 Thread Daniel Hahler
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 156740 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156740

Craig, there's no module for the -386 kernel (yet). See bug 156740.
Also, this appears not to be the same bug as reported by sebasmagri initially.

I'm marking it as duplicate of bug 156740.

[Bug 128334] Re: vino password accepted even if extra chars after correct pw

2008-01-27 Thread Jonh Wendell
Hi.

This is a limitation of the rfb protocol. The password is limited to 8
characters.
I would consider this a bug in the client. It should limit the password entry
to 8 chars.

In such situation i see 2 solutions.
1. try to update power manager ( in my case Kpowersave )
2. try to update to new kernel ( more probable solution )

[Bug 77739] Re: LCD brightness setting doesn't work with Sony Vaio VGN-S5M

2008-01-27 Thread yleetiny
Sebastian Gaul:
My script is not perfect : it overides the applet (in fact it does exactly what
the applet does in a different language).
But i think it still a good thing because :
1- it better respect the security
2- with it Gnome brightness preferences works (when you swith form
sector/battery the light changes)

Laurent Almeras:
Firstly thanks for all your work...
Secondly, setting the brightness for VAIO seems to be a common problem (on
ubuntu's french forum), what we have done so far should works out of the box
for smartdimmer users !
But unfortunately many users still have to use xbacklight or even software
solution. I think we can easily provide a solution for them too.
Thinking a bit about it, it seems to me that the best way is just to use a
common platform for all VAIO users in hal which will call acpi.
This way it will allows every users to set his brightness correctly (or if not
with a software implementation).
Advantages :
1- more flexible (people will just have to change a variable to switch between
different solution ("echo", xbacklight, smartdimmer, nvclock)
2- it will reduce the complexity of the problem because there will have only
one file or two for everyone
3- you can make it for every vaio users
Disvantages :
1- it makes hal dépendant of acpi
2- others ideas that i haven't been thinking of...

Thirdly and Finally, i'm asking you if you're interrested in it so that
i can count on you to "package" it and helping me if i got a problem.

[Bug 186430] [NEW] Changing a background in Impress

2008-01-27 Thread revkarl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

OpenOffice needs a single-click way to change a background image in

presentation slides. Even for someone with extensive computer skills,
the current "change slide master" method is ridiculously cumbersome.

and the load cycle count will literally be stopped. This has got only
one disadvantage, the hdd temperature is out of control (at 45 deg). In

Well, bootlogd *has* a maintainer, it's Debian sysvinit team. Maybe I'll send
the fixes
there some day.

The OK placement is yes, sort of intentional. They use a lot of terminal
trickery to make
output look better, and logging it correctly would require many changes to the
code.
I had to choose from a couple of simple rules, and the other choices led to
worse results.
After all, this "OK" is a separate message and its timing may be useful.

You can make it appear on the same line by changing the source as follows.
Go to bootlog.c line 361, there will be a part of switch like this:

case '\n':
case '\r":
   ...

Change it to:

case '\r':
break;
case '\n':

But then you will lose, among other things, the summary of a long fsck run

[Bug 186434] [NEW] K3B cannot detect DVD writer on Firewire (Sony DVD RW DRU-710A)

2008-01-27 Thread U Buntu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k3b

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10"
Kernel: 2.6.22-14-generic
K3B Version: 1.0.4
Device: DRX-710UL (which is the Sony DVD RW DRU-710A drive)
Device firmware: BYX5

This device has both USB and Firewire interface. The bug described below
is ONLY relevant to the Firewire interface. Functions through USB work
as expected. I require the device to work through Firewire.

Status with other programs:

Windows XP work 100% in all software and media
Ubuntu. Gnomebaker, tested writing image to DVD+RW and DVD+R. Works 100%

Symptoms:

StartK3B, drive not detected, even if I manually specify device.
If I insert a disc with data on it, the drive becomes visible in K3B, correctly
identifying the media. Changing the media to empty disc at this point change
status to no media present.

>From this point onwards, it it useless even inserting disc with media
present, it will not be mounted in Ubuntu unless I restart the device. I
once inserted a disc and just left it there.

The output of cdrecord -scanbus match the status of k3B i.e. device
present with data disc. Device not present empty media.

Log outputs:
=
/var/log (after inserting empty media):

[Bug 186444] [NEW] Nautilus persistently segfauls when default icon size set over 100%

2008-01-27 Thread Mike MacCana
Public bug reported:

Edit > Preferences > Default Zoom Level to anything greater than 100%
causes Nautilus 1:2.21.6-0ubuntu2 to persistently segfault.

I use a default icon size of 150% normally. After upgrading to the
current Hardy packages, nautilus 1:2.21.6-0ubuntu2 persistently crashed.
After clearing my old gnome configuration, and re-applying each of my
normal settings, I noticed the above issue.

Setting the icon size back to 100% via gconf-editor avoids the crashes.
Setting the icon size back to say 200% will cause the crashes again.

[Bug 136711] Re: Show Hidden Files broken in common dialogs

2008-01-27 Thread Patryk J
I can confirm this within Firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US;
rv:1.8.1.11) Gecko/20071204 Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy) Firefox/2.0.0.11), but not in
gEdit.
I've testing this in several situations (save page as, save download, open
file, save frame as). The two features that repeat the bug are "save download"
and "save frame as". Save Download is described below:

Make sure your Firefox settings allow you to pick the location to save
downloads:
Edit -> Preferences -> Main -> [Downloads] -> (*) Always ask me where to save
files

Click on a link (anywhere) that will prompt you to download a file.
1. When the Download Dialog appears (Open/Save); Make sure "Save to Disk" is
selected and click "OK"
2. The File-Picker window appears. Browse to your home directory, right-click,
mark "Show Hidden Files".

At this point, the hidden files appear. If you repeat the last step (step 2),
everything works normally. Leaving "Show Hidden Files" checked;
3. Click the "Cancel" button.
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 (in order): The result will show a partial listing of
the hidden files/directories in your home directory --limited to the number of
NON-hidden files/directories in your home directory.

Conclusion / Evaluation:
It seems that upon returning and removing the "Show Hidden Files" option, the
directory listing is truncated to the correct NUMBER OF ITEMS
(files/directories) that are NOT hidden, but their actual names are not updated.
Looks like a missing step in the standard operation of updating a directory
listing.

At the time of writing this, I had just installed fresh from a 7.10
(gutsy) disc. I'm running a 64bit version (core 2 quad).

[Bug 157993] Re: pppoe connection over NetworkManager 0.6 managed ethernet device doesn't work

2008-01-27 Thread Joe Holloway
I've had the same problem on my father's PC after an upgrade from Feisty
-> Gutsy.   I've tried several different /etc/network/interfaces
configurations and this is the only one I've found that starts the ppp
connection on boot:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto dsl-provider
iface dsl-provider inet ppp
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider dsl-provider

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

I don't know how I landed on this as the first couple times I ran
pppoeconf after the upgrade I was getting some strange entries in there:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth1
#iface eth1 inet dhcp

auto eth2
#iface eth2 inet dhcp

auto ath0
#iface ath0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
#iface wlan0 inet dhcp

auto dsl-provider
iface dsl-provider inet ppp
#pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider dsl-provider

auto eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface eth0 inet manual

Given that I can recreate on my dad's DSL setup, let me know if there's

[Bug 109725] Re: can't set hardware address in /etc/network/interfaces

2008-01-27 Thread a7x
I am having a similar problem in Gutsy. After adding the line
"hwaddress ether 01:23:45:67:89:ab" to /etc/network/interfaces and
running "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart", I get the error message
"SIOCSIFHWADDR: Device or resource busy". Commenting out the hwaddress
line and adding a pre-up rule as suggested by LKRaider seems to work.

atollic: do you also get the SIOCSIFHWADDR error?

Debian bug #224468 (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=224468) and Ubuntu bug #150924 may also be
related.

Re: [Bug 96097] Re: [Feisty]knetworkmanager hangs on activation stage when connecting to WAP, WEP

No, problem was with Feisty and Eft (and maybe initial release of Gutsy, but I
do not remember), seems to be gone now.
Still, sometimes the connection is dropped and when it does, I cannot revive
it except by a reboot. However, I doubt this is an issue with knetworkdaemon,
probably with the underlying ndiswrapper or the driver contained within.

It is unfortunate, however, that when the connection drops, knetworkmanager
does not see this. (Probably because it is not updated by the driver, but
still...)

Kind regards,

Ruben

Compiz crashed several times a day for me when I installed Hardy a few

couple times since then. Compiz has not crashed at all today or
yesterday. I currently have no real problems with hardy. I would like a
more stable flash plugin, but that's a whole different issue. hardy is
pretty much the same as Gutsy was.

[Bug 186461] [NEW] gvfs painfully slow over smb (samba)

2008-01-27 Thread Mikael Nilsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Hi!

I'm trying the gvfs code in Ubuntu hardy.

I'm pretty annoyed by the smb performance. I have a Debian-based NAS on my LAN,
that usually gives around 2-3 Mb/s transfer speeds, using kernel (cifs) mounts.

Accessing the share using smb:/// in nautilus gives me about 300 kb/s, or about
a tenth of the speed.

I've tried measuring using command-line and the FUSE .gvfs/mountpoint/... -
and the results are the same, meaning that it is not nautilus' fault.

I really hope this is an issue that can be fixed, as I think gvfs is shaping up
nicely! Let me know if I can help debug.

Also reported upstream.

[Bug 154504] Re: Gnome-panel hangs and allocates all possible ram.

2008-01-27 Thread Andrew Perry
Yes, I can confirm this behavior exactly. The bug only occurs when there
are >8 windows in the window list and it is positioned on a left of
right vertical panel. Thanks for spotting this Mr_C the workaround
is to put the window list applet on a bottom or top panel.

I thought it was an U7.10 x64 specific bug, however I've now reinstalled
with U7.10 i386, and gnome-panel also hangs when the Window list has >8
and is in a left or right panel.
