[Bug 187598] Re: Printout alignment issues with Brother printers
Progress update. I checked the following URL for which packages were required: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BrotherDriverPackaging My model (DCP-135C) was attached to the following packages: brother-lpr-drivers-extra brother-cups-wrapper-extra Packages for Gutsy available at http://upload.leservicetechnique.com/brother/gutsy/ At this time the brother-lpr-drivers-extra package however was unavailable so I downloaded the bh7 packages instead. I did this because DCP-130 is supported by those packages and apparently DCP-135 and DCP-130 are fairly similar (even the Brother official drivers are actually for DCP-130). This however did not work. The printer will not function at all with these packages. [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
It's now almost 2 year since I've written something about this bug here (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1/comments/62) and it's now about 1 year since I've lost fait that this bug will be solved before I die. Yet it's time to make a review if anything has changed regarding this bug. To draw a resume: Ubuntu has nothing achived in this last year. It couldn't gain anything on Windows, it only margially gained on other Linux distributions and it even lost on MacOSX. How can anybody spend his spare time (his most precious live time) for a project with doesn't make any progression! Nothing significant has been achieved in this year. Windows ist still the vast leading system and even seems to gain in some parts. Windows doesn't anymore trap that often into a blue screen. Windows drivers are mostly delivered through Windows Update and are mostly uptodate. And there are still countless of Windows-only applications out there. There is still no easy usable Mailer/Calender/Communicator application in Ubuntu. There are still only these horrible GTK+ applications available. There are still countless driver problems when using new or even sometime old hardware. Installing and accessing printers is still something which often doesn't work. The display through X-server looks awfull, fonts are more or less not viewable. I'm asking, does Ubuntu really plan to fix this short commings anytime or has it given up? O. [Bug 182549] Re: Printing fails in Ubuntu, works in Kubuntu
Is this still a problem? Looking at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems does disabling AppArmor with sudo aa-complain cupsd make a difference? After applying the patch over a week ago now, my printer has been working well, without random stoppages halfway through pages. So, as far as I'm concerned, the patch works. But I've noticed at least one other person who seems to be having less luck than me, so whether it is still a problem depends on whether others are still having the problem. The AppArmor thing looks interesting, but it's too late for me since the patch seems to have fixed it. [Bug 190537] Re: [Gutsy] Display sleep sets wrong DPMS off time
I think I've figured out how to trigger it. The computer in question is a laptop, with an external CRT connected via a docking station some of the time -- and all the times the DPMS Off: value has been incorrectly set, the laptop has been docked with the CRT connected. And if that time is non-zero, then playing with the adjusters seems to set the Off: time to the difference between the two (which definitely seems to be the wrong behaviour to me). So there appears to be two things going on: - there's something in Gnome (presumably Power Management) which is incorrectly setting the DPMS Off time to the difference between the Power Management off time and the Screensaver time (possibly when it notices a non-zero Off: time -- but irrespective, it's still doing the wrong thing: if it's going to set it, it should be to the total Power Management off time, or 0) - there's a race condition between the CRT waking up and the DPMS being reset to zero (possibly by some other power management program or task), where the DPMS setting doesn't stick until the CRT is ready to accept it (for which the fix is presumably to have the power management reapply the setting a little while, eg, 30 seconds, after either (a) unsuspend, or (b) the arrival of a new monitor. It appears once it becomes a non-zero value it's difficult to get the reset to 0 behaviour back; I did manage it with one suspend (powering on the CRT a little earlier in the unsuspend), but other attempts still didn't reset it to zero (including ensuring the CRT was fully powered on before unsuspending). In case it matters, the laptop is a HP NC6220, which has Intel integrated graphics (Intel 915GM), with a HP docking station, and a Viewsonic E70 CRT connected to it. Anyway it seems to me that if the Gnome power manager is going to manage the display power off itself, it should probably be explicitly resetting the X DPMS Off: time (and others) to 0, and definitely never setting it to the difference between the screensaver time and the Power Management screen off time. That seems to be the core bug. [Bug 153425] Re: (Multiseat) screen shifts when /dev/console written to
Workaround at end of message. I have been experiencing the same bug. After reading this bug report and doing a little experimentation, I can confirm that output (specifically scrolling) to /dev/console triggers the screen shifting to occur. Furthermore, the problem only occurs when /dev/console is connected to the vga console. Once the problem has occurred, echo -n /dev/console does not affect the shifting since it omits the carriage return and does not scroll the screen. echo -n a /dev/console Does affect the shifting after being run 80 times, causing the console to scroll. Until a kernel fix is available, I have worked around the problem by adding console=ttyS1,38400 to my kernel boot options (/boot/grub/menu.lst) to prevent all output to the vga console. -- Steve -- (Multiseat) screen shifts when /dev/console written to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153425 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yet it's time to make a review if anything has changed regarding this bug. To draw a resume: Ubuntu has nothing achived in this last year. I guess you see what you want to see... I am sure my perception is slightly biased as well, but I still have some points to counter. 1) Have you tried printing lately? With Gutsy, cups made a huge gain. Now most HP and Xerox printers are auto-detected, even on the LAN, and installed with no searching. See me do thins with my laptop has prompted a few Wins at client sites with me saying nothing. 2) If your screen is ugly, you have a problem. My screen looks better than most Windows screens, and fonts render correctly in everything. No, nothing has been compiled. This is all with packages in repositories. 3) This year I have been able to engage business to a level I never have before, in considering Linux desktops for non-technical users. I have several Proof of Concepts out that should convert into roll-outs. And I have been selling Ubuntu Guest PCs quite well for some time now. 4) Drivers have changed quite a bit as well. Along with the CUPS stuff above, nVidia drivers are auto-detected, and installed by clicking a bubble that pops up. Several NICs work this way too. Trying to view a file without a codec prompts you on what codec to install and how. Now this has not yet translated to a 50% market share, but it has made the platform much more viable for people that don't care about computers. And showing how easy my life is without Windows is the best advertising. Do you know how impressive it is to print out my invoice at the client site on their printer without looking for a disk or asking for an IP address? [Bug 193633] [NEW] Logitech S510 fails to send LeftCtrl+LeftShfit+.. key combinations
Public bug reported: Logitech S510 support Looks broken at least in the Ubuntu distribution Ubuntu 7.10 - the Gutsy Gibbon, Also probably broken in one of the recent updates for the 7.06 I have a clean, up-to-date installation of Ubuntu 7.10 combinations LeftCtrl+LeftShift+... LeftCtrl+T LeftCtrl+Y do not produce any codes I use LeftCtrl+LeftShift+LeftArrow and LeftCtrl+LeftShift+RightArrow to select a word in most text editors and Ctrl+T and Ctrl+Y are Firefox hot keys. I am not using special multi media keys of S510. I tried only volume change on the right side of the keyboard and the key works I used xkeycaps to test the keys. I tested all LeftCtrl+letter combinations. Only Ctrl+T and Ctrl+Y do not work. When i click LeftCtrl alone and LeftShift alone X recognizes the keys correctly. When I press LeftCtrl and LeftShift simultaneously only LeftCtrl is activated (yellow color on the displayed keyboard). LeftCtrl and RightShift work as expected. For example LeftCtrl+RightShift+Arrow Right selects a word on the right in gedit, etc. Wired USB keyboard from HP (105 keys) works just fine for me - both Shifts and Ctrls operate as expected. The keyboard itself is approximately two years old and works fine with WinXP. The desktop is mouse and keyboard only. I do not have media remote control. Model name Y-RAK73 PID SC5340E P/N 867612-0119 The S510 keyboard worked fine two weeks ago - just before an update of the 7.06 i did. The problem is specific to the S510. Because of timing of the problem i suspect that the possible reason is the recent S510 related patch in the kernel (more details here http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7352#c45 ). I will happy to collect logs. Just to add twopenneth, mute/volume level shows up on sound applet when adjusting using the mousewheel but sound carries on as normal.
