[Bug 190754] Re: Bad multitasking / responsiveness in Hardy

2008-02-20 Thread kripkenstein
It sounds like you are experiencing the symptoms of bug 131094

No, I believe that is an unrelated manner. I experience this bug even
without any disk IO, as shown in my example above, of alt-tabbing
between Sound Recorder and Firefox. There is little if any disk IO in
such a case as far as I can tell.

Also the older bug is relevant to various Ubuntu releases, and this new
bug appears to happen *only* in Hardy, i.e., it is very new.

[Bug 187598] Re: Printout alignment issues with Brother printers

2008-02-20 Thread Andreas Modinos
Progress update.

I checked the following URL for which packages were required:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BrotherDriverPackaging

My model (DCP-135C) was attached to the following packages:
brother-lpr-drivers-extra
brother-cups-wrapper-extra

Packages for Gutsy available at
http://upload.leservicetechnique.com/brother/gutsy/

At this time the brother-lpr-drivers-extra package however was
unavailable so I downloaded the bh7 packages instead. I did this because
DCP-130 is supported by those packages and apparently DCP-135 and
DCP-130 are fairly similar (even the Brother official drivers are
actually for DCP-130).

This however did not work. The printer will not function at all with these
packages.
I would like to try again with the correct packages once those become fully
available.

[Bug 193613] [NEW] No automatic connection when using dial-up internet

Public bug reported:

I'm using dial-up internet connection with an USB Huaweii modem. After

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-02-20 Thread wyo
It's now almost 2 year since I've written something about this bug here
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1/comments/62) and it's now about 1
year since I've lost fait that this bug will be solved before I die. Yet
it's time to make a review if anything has changed regarding this bug.

To draw a resume: Ubuntu has nothing achived in this last year. It
couldn't gain anything on Windows, it only margially gained on other
Linux distributions and it even lost on MacOSX.

How can anybody spend his spare time (his most precious live time) for a
project with doesn't make any progression! Nothing significant has been
achieved in this year. Windows ist still the vast leading system and
even seems to gain in some parts. Windows doesn't anymore trap that
often into a blue screen. Windows drivers are mostly delivered through
Windows Update and are mostly uptodate. And there are still countless of
Windows-only applications out there.

There is still no easy usable Mailer/Calender/Communicator application
in Ubuntu. There are still only these horrible GTK+ applications
available. There are still countless driver problems when using new or
even sometime old hardware. Installing and accessing printers is still
something which often doesn't work. The display through X-server looks
awfull, fonts are more or less not viewable.

I'm asking, does Ubuntu really plan to fix this short commings anytime
or has it given up?

O. Wyss

This is not the same bug - this one here is for when the screen goes

comes back by moving the mouse or using the keyboard.

[Bug 182549] Re: Printing fails in Ubuntu, works in Kubuntu

2008-02-20 Thread Rob Watson

Is this still a problem?

Looking at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems does disabling
AppArmor with sudo aa-complain cupsd make a difference?

After applying the patch over a week ago now, my printer has been
working well, without random stoppages halfway through pages. So, as far
as I'm concerned, the patch works. But I've noticed at least one other
person who seems to be having less luck than me, so whether it is still
a problem depends on whether others are still having the problem.

The AppArmor thing looks interesting, but it's too late for me since the
patch seems to have fixed it.

I'm also still wondering why it only affects Ubuntu and not Kubuntu, and
why their cups configs are so different.

[Bug 193195] Re: [hardy] trickle upload limit also limits wget download

2008-02-20 Thread Fernando Pereira
On Tuesday 19 February 2008 16:35:19 sveri wrote:

For better control over spikes, one needs to set the time parameters.

And now comes the really weired thing, exchanging the -u and the -d option,
like you wrote above i get an upload value at ca. 34 K/s with peaks at 40 K/s
which is all my connection is able to transfer.

Maybe you can try exchanging the options and see if it does change anything.

You mean setting first the -u and then -d?

[Bug 193617] [NEW] Hardy rhythmbox stops screen from blanking on laptop lid close

2008-02-20 Thread Booljayj
Public bug reported:

On a Dell e1505 Laptop with Hardy Heron Alpha 4, the laptop screen will
not blank out on a lid close if rhythmbox is running. The power
preferences are all perfectly set, and when rhythmbox is not running the
screen blanks out perfectly, but if rhythmbox is running the screen will
not shut off. A pop-up appears over the power icon in the notification
area that says Request to do policy action-- Music Player has stopped
the policy action from taking place: playing. This bug also applies to
pressing the power button (in order to lock the screen). If rhythmbox is
running, the button does nothing, and the same pop-up appears.

When the screen remains on, it tends to heat up the laptop very quickly,
which risks hardware overheating.

[Bug 190537] Re: [Gutsy] Display sleep sets wrong DPMS off time

2008-02-20 Thread Ewen McNeill
I think I've figured out how to trigger it.

The computer in question is a laptop, with an external CRT connected via
a docking station some of the time -- and all the times the DPMS Off:
value has been incorrectly set, the laptop has been docked with the CRT
connected.

In order to trigger it I seem to need to:
- boot up docked, with the CRT on
- suspend to RAM
- turn off the CRT
- unsuspend (which is hit the power button in the case of this laptop)
- while unsuspending, turn on the CRT (at the right time)

In that situation I get:

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 0Suspend: 0Off: 60
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On

or:

DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 0Suspend: 0Off: 300
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On

with the Off: time being set to the difference between the Power
Mangement time and the Screensaver time. And if that time is non-zero,
then playing with the adjusters seems to set the Off: time to the
difference between the two (which definitely seems to be the wrong
behaviour to me).

So there appears to be two things going on:
- there's something in Gnome (presumably Power Management) which is incorrectly
setting the DPMS Off time to the difference between the Power Management off
time and the Screensaver time (possibly when it notices a non-zero Off: time --
but irrespective, it's still doing the wrong thing: if it's going to set it, it
should be to the total Power Management off time, or 0)

- there's a race condition between the CRT waking up and the DPMS being
reset to zero (possibly by some other power management program or task),
where the DPMS setting doesn't stick until the CRT is ready to accept
it (for which the fix is presumably to have the power management reapply
the setting a little while, eg, 30 seconds, after either (a) unsuspend,
or (b) the arrival of a new monitor.

It appears once it becomes a non-zero value it's difficult to get the
reset to 0 behaviour back; I did manage it with one suspend (powering
on the CRT a little earlier in the unsuspend), but other attempts still
didn't reset it to zero (including ensuring the CRT was fully powered on
before unsuspending).

In case it matters, the laptop is a HP NC6220, which has Intel
integrated graphics (Intel 915GM), with a HP docking station, and a
Viewsonic E70 CRT connected to it.

Anyway it seems to me that if the Gnome power manager is going to manage
the display power off itself, it should probably be explicitly resetting
the X DPMS Off: time (and others) to 0, and definitely never setting it
to the difference between the screensaver time and the Power Management
screen off time. That seems to be the core bug.

Ewen

Perhaps.

However, Bug #188256 says the problem only exists when the CD is empty,
while my virtual floppy drive is clearly not empty since I can mount it
manually.

Perhaps there is a bug in VirtualBox, falsely reporting the floppy drive
to be empty even though it allows normal block device access to fd0. If
so this may also be related to the fact that Ubiquity offered to install
Ubuntu onto /dev/fd0 under Virtual Box (see Bug #193267).

[Bug 193619] [NEW] php with fastcgi does not detect user abort

2008-02-20 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5-cgi

This is related with php bug: http://bugs.php.net/37256

When using php in fastcgi mode, it does not detect any user abort.
connection_status() always return 0, even after user aborts connection.

I'm using hardy. It's supposed to be solved in PHP 5.2 since May 2006,
but perhaps hardy package 5.2.3-1ubuntu6.2 does not include the fix.

You can use this script to test the problem:
?
ignore_user_abort(true);

echo hello;
flush();
sleep(10);
echo bye

$fp=fopen('/tmp/conection_log.txt','a');
fputs($fp,'Connection status is: '.connection_status().\n);
fclose($fp);

If you press stop after loading the page (you will have time because the sleep
10), connection_status shouldn't be 0 at the end of the script.

[Bug 193621] [NEW] Invalid attribute Originial-Maintainer in package description

2008-02-20 Thread dvh
Public bug reported:

Hi.

There is typo in packages description for package bluetooth version
3.19-0ubuntu3, in Ubuntu 7.10. There is:

Originial-Maintainer: Debian Bluetooth Maintainers ...

It should be Original, not Originial, one i is vacant.

The same bug is in: bluez-cups, bluez-utils. I use packages
description from here:

http://sk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/gutsy/main/binary-i386/Packages.bz2

But I think it's common bug in all repositories. Here is how I found
this bug:

cat packages | grep -v '^ ' | awk '{ print $1 }' | grep ':' | sort -u

[Bug 153425] Re: (Multiseat) screen shifts when /dev/console written to

2008-02-20 Thread vandebo
Workaround at end of message.

I have been experiencing the same bug. After reading this bug report
and doing a little experimentation, I can confirm that output
(specifically scrolling) to /dev/console triggers the screen shifting to
occur. Furthermore, the problem only occurs when /dev/console is
connected to the vga console.

Once the problem has occurred,
echo -n /dev/console
does not affect the shifting since it omits the carriage return and does not
scroll the screen.
echo -n a /dev/console
Does affect the shifting after being run 80 times, causing the console to
scroll.

Until a kernel fix is available, I have worked around the problem by adding
console=ttyS1,38400
to my kernel boot options (/boot/grub/menu.lst) to prevent all output to the
vga console.

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-02-20 Thread houstonbofh
wyo wrote:
It's now almost 2 year since I've written something about this bug here
 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1/comments/62) and it's now about 1
year since I've lost fait that this bug will be solved before I die. Yet
it's time to make a review if anything has changed regarding this bug.

To draw a resume: Ubuntu has nothing achived in this last year.

I guess you see what you want to see... I am sure my perception is
slightly biased as well, but I still have some points to counter.

1) Have you tried printing lately? With Gutsy, cups made a huge gain.
Now most HP and Xerox printers are auto-detected, even on the LAN, and
installed with no searching. See me do thins with my laptop has
prompted a few Wins at client sites with me saying nothing.

2) If your screen is ugly, you have a problem. My screen looks better
than most Windows screens, and fonts render correctly in everything.
No, nothing has been compiled. This is all with packages in repositories.

3) This year I have been able to engage business to a level I never have
before, in considering Linux desktops for non-technical users. I have
several Proof of Concepts out that should convert into roll-outs. And I
have been selling Ubuntu Guest PCs quite well for some time now.

4) Drivers have changed quite a bit as well. Along with the CUPS stuff
above, nVidia drivers are auto-detected, and installed by clicking a
bubble that pops up. Several NICs work this way too. Trying to view a
file without a codec prompts you on what codec to install and how.

Now this has not yet translated to a 50% market share, but it has made
the platform much more viable for people that don't care about
computers. And showing how easy my life is without Windows is the best
advertising. Do you know how impressive it is to print out my invoice
at the client site on their printer without looking for a disk or asking
for an IP address? (Or if you do, it is Which one of your 6 HP 4220s
is that one? .22?) To someone that has only run Windows, this looks
like magic!

[Bug 193543] Not mounting the floppy is the bug.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 188256 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/188256

the floppy is not mounted in your case which leads to a similar
situation -- Sebastien Bacher

AFAICT, two bugs result in the behaviour I reported in this report:
  1) if mount fails, no acknowledgement is produced.
  2) The floppy is not mounted (by nautilus),

The bug (1) may well be the same as bug 188256, however the bug I am actually
reporting is (2).
Number (2) is not a bug with respect to the behaviour noted in bug 188256,
since it is reasonable that nautilus will not mount an empty drive.
However (2) is a bug here, as mount allows me to mount the floppy, so it is
reasonable to expect nautilus to also allow me to mount the floppy.

We appear to be violently agreeing ;).

I installed AVG and had the same problem. You need to add your user to

In the window that appears click on manage groups and add your user to
the avg group.

You will need to log out (+ possibly restart) your machine for the
change to take affect.

[Bug 193633] [NEW] Logitech S510 fails to send LeftCtrl+LeftShfit+.. key combinations

2008-02-20 Thread larytet
Public bug reported:

Logitech S510 support Looks broken at least in the Ubuntu distribution Ubuntu
7.10 - the Gutsy Gibbon, Also probably broken in one of the recent updates for
the 7.06
I have a clean, up-to-date installation of Ubuntu 7.10

combinations
LeftCtrl+LeftShift+...
LeftCtrl+T
LeftCtrl+Y
do not produce any codes

I use LeftCtrl+LeftShift+LeftArrow and LeftCtrl+LeftShift+RightArrow to
select a word in most text editors and Ctrl+T and Ctrl+Y are Firefox hot
keys.

I am not using special multi media keys of S510. I tried only volume
change on the right side of the keyboard and the key works

I used xkeycaps to test the keys. I tested all LeftCtrl+letter
combinations. Only Ctrl+T and Ctrl+Y do not work. When i click LeftCtrl
alone and LeftShift alone X recognizes the keys correctly. When I press
LeftCtrl and LeftShift simultaneously only LeftCtrl is activated (yellow
color on the displayed keyboard). LeftCtrl and RightShift work as
expected. For example LeftCtrl+RightShift+Arrow Right selects a word on
the right in gedit, etc.

Wired USB keyboard from HP (105 keys) works just fine for me - both
Shifts and Ctrls operate as expected.

The keyboard itself is approximately two years old and works fine with WinXP.
The desktop is mouse and keyboard only. I do not have media remote control.
Model name Y-RAK73
PID SC5340E
P/N 867612-0119

The S510 keyboard worked fine two weeks ago - just before an update of
the 7.06 i did.

The problem is specific to the S510. Because of timing of the problem i
suspect that the possible reason is the recent S510 related patch in the
kernel (more details here
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7352#c45 ). I will happy to
collect logs. I can not recompile the kernel in my setup.

[Bug 126333] Re: [GUTSY] Regression - Volume Control using gnome panel applet and keyboard shortcut alternates mute / % volume during sliding

2008-02-20 Thread zig59
Just to add twopenneth, mute/volume level shows up on sound applet when
adjusting using the mousewheel but sound carries on as normal. Volume
level appears to be accurate but sound continues when showing muted.
Explicitly muting (keyboard button or applet right-click) does mute the
sound.

I have had this on a Feisty - Gutsy upgrade and a clean install of
Gutsy (32bit desktop). Hardware is Abit AN8-V motherboard CK804 AC'97
onboard sound chipset using Alsa.

Not sure what info to include but will do if asked for. Have included
screenshot showing muted sound (take my word for it the music was
playing) but the alsa mixer window (centre bottom) is not showing any
mute (the applet is set to control the master volume). The mute box on
the applet right-click context menu was showing the sound as muted
though. Unfortunately I couldn't screendump while the context menu was
up.

marking as invalid: FreezeExceptions won't get granted, if noone

[Bug 193329] Re: [hardy] [alpha4] bubiquity hangs after language selection, until languagechooser is -KILL'ed

2008-02-20 Thread Colin Watson
The languagechooser package is long dead, merged into localechooser
years ago. However, this is probably a ubiquity bug anyway. I thought
we'd fixed this in 1.7.3 ...

Could you please run the installer with 'ubiquity --debug' and attach
/var/log/syslog and /var/log/installer/debug to this bug, following the
directions in http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs?
Thanks in advance.

[Bug 182790] Re: main inclusion report

2008-02-20 Thread Martin Pitt
Thanks, Arnaud for the report improvements, and Jamie for the security
review. The packages, as well as the current level of proactive security
seems adequate to me.

Since this package is likely to need some real maintenance and support,
I'd like to get some commitments on this before approval.

 - Server team, does any of you have an UPS for testing and developing this
package?
 - Server team, please put a commitment here that we have the necessary
manpower to support, develop, and fix this package in the next 5 years of
Hardy's life.
 - Arnaud, do you happen to be interested in helping with the maintenance in
Ubuntu, too? (e. g. have a look at the bug reports, etc.)

Thank you!

[Bug 193621] Re: Invalid attribute Originial-Maintainer in package description

2008-02-20 Thread Andrea Colangelo
Thank you for your bug report and for taking the time to make Ubuntu better.
I can confirm your bug in Gutsy. Anyway, I'm marking this bug as Won't fix,
since this bug is not worth a Stable Release Update IMHO (please, check
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates for more information on this
topic). The bug has been fixed in Hardy.
Please, feel free to reopen this bug if you disagree, and feel free as well to
open another bug if needed.

[Bug 177492] Re: EXA is balls-achingly slow

2008-02-20 Thread unggnu
I am not sure if there is a difference with scrolling but at least with
glxgears INTEL_BATCH has an impact. I have read somewhere that
INTEL_BATCH have no influence on higher 3D games but I don't know a good
3D benchmark from repository.

I am using current Hardy and in both cases Compiz was active. The resolution on
my external display was 1680x1050 and the LFP was disabled.
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express
Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Hardy with INTEL_BATCH:
4153 frames in 5.0 seconds = 830.491 FPS
4225 frames in 5.0 seconds = 844.903 FPS
4223 frames in 5.0 seconds = 844.403 FPS

Hardy without INTEL_BATCH:
3466 frames in 5.0 seconds = 693.124 FPS
3478 frames in 5.0 seconds = 695.567 FPS
3491 frames in 5.0 seconds = 698.163 FPS

current Gutsy without Compiz and INTEL_BATCH:
3679 frames in 5.0 seconds = 735.717 FPS
3673 frames in 5.0 seconds = 734.414 FPS
3613 frames in 5.0 seconds = 722.541 FPS
