[Bug 90434] Re: please enable dontzap by default

2008-03-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Perhaps... but I don't think there is an easy solution to this that will
make everyone satisfied. I could imagine those who support keeping the
shortcut would dislike it no longer working immediately, whereas people
who don't want to have X exit from inadvertent keystrokes may prefer to
see the function disabled entirely, not just delayed. (But I could be
wrong.)

I suspect the best solution will be involve including a gui checkbox
control someplace, and a script to turn it on/off in xorg.conf, perhaps
a Hardy+1/+2 sort of thing. But lets see what ideas develop consensus
in the specification first.

[Bug 199030] Re: Can't close SCIM

2008-03-10 Thread Arne Goetje
This bug has been resolved in the latest scim, scim-bridge and
language-selector packages.
Also, the current daily live CD image is fine.

This bug only affects those folks who are using Hardy for a longer time
already and updated frequently.

The proper way to disable scim is:
1. System -> Administration -> Language Support
2. uncheck the 'Enable support to enter complex characters' checkbox
3. restart your X session by logout/re-login or if this doesn't do the trick,
reboot.

If this still does not do the trick, the following will definitely do:
Open a terminal window and type: sudo im-switch -z all_ALL -s none
After that, restart your X session.

Explanation:
scim is running as daemon under the control of im-switch. To allow scim to grab
the keyboard input, a bunch of environment variables need to be set within the
X session. Toggeling the checkbox in Language Support will set/unset those
variables. To get the changes into effect, a restart of the running X session
is required.

Background:
For scim to work correctly in Ubuntu, the combination of im-switch, scim and
language-selector is required, as well as several optional scim-modules for the
actual input methods.
Before Hardy, the im-switch package was not seeded into the default desktop
(and therefor into the live CD), which made it impossible to get scim working
on the live CD without installing the language support packages for one of the
CJK languages. As scim is also used by many other non-CJK users who don't have
appropriate keyboard layouts available for their desired languages, we decided
to seed im-switch, so that it can be used on the Live CD as well.
Some time in the past (during the Hardy development cycle), the function in
Language Support to set/unset he environment variables, stopped working
correctly and the environment variables got enabled by default for everyone.
With the seeding of im-switch, this led to the behaviour which you experienced,
but which was not intentional.
As we cannot detect who intentionally enabled scim support in their non-CJK
locales and who didn't, we cannot solve this by script and manual interaction
is required to disable scim support for those who don't want it.

And a comment to the 'Close' function in the scim gtk frontend:
This one only works when scim is started as a foreground process, but has no
effect when scim is running in daemon mode.

And one more comment:
As this is a development version, such breakage may occur. For those of you who
need a stable and reliable system, please use the current stable release.

[Bug 200338] Re: no sound hardy kernel 2.6.24-12

2008-03-10 Thread Toten Maske
Upgraded to the Fixed Kernel, and all seems to be running fine, except
one key issue - no audio with VLC, running everything running through
PulseAudio in System>Preferences>Sound I get a Test tone, but change the
audio to alsa, esd, and oss and I get no feed back with a Test Tone.
VLC is dependent upon alsa,esd, or oss support to playback audio in
movies - so even now kernel 2.6.24-11 seems to be the only option for
those that want fully supported sound, 2.6.24-12 seems to only support
PulseAudio.

My Soundcard is a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS.

[Bug 42678] Re: Logitech MX500 mouse forward/back buttons not detected

2008-03-10 Thread Greg Taylor
This really shouldn't need a GUI to work, it's counter to the
aforementioned "Just works" mindframe, and is also counter to bug #1.
This is the kind of thing that most users expect to not have to worry
about. Keyboards and mice are basic peripherals that most operating
systems pick up and require no real thought from the user in 98% of the
cases, this should be the same for Ubuntu.

There's a glaring problem here, how can we help troubleshoot it and
figure out what needs to be fixed? Has anyone heard anything from the
xorg guys regarding this?

[Bug 152362] Re: icedtea-java7-plugin always crashes firefox

2008-03-10 Thread Brian Rogers
Actually, the instructions that were posted cause apt-get source to
rebuild everything four times, because specifying any one of those java
packages will build all of them. After installing the dependencies, just
run 'apt-get -b source icedtea-java7-jre' (no sudo needed as long as you
have fakeroot installed).

And if you've already got the jre package built, go ahead and install
it, because that's the only one you need to replace.

[Bug 200875] [NEW] firefox 3 + compiz window decoration oddities

2008-03-10 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm not sure if this is a Firefox 3 or compiz issue so I won't set the
package just yet.

As I move to different pages in Firefox 3 on the latest up to date Hardy
(as of March 11 at 2:29 AM EST), the top title bar/window decoration
does a few weird things from time to time. A gray stripe will sometimes
blank out the top of the window decoration, with the lower half acting
normally, and sometimes the entire top window decoration turns gray as
if the window lost focus, but the title bar text is also gone.

This seems to be compiz related but I'm not positive. Other applications
don't seem to be having the issue, so it may also have some Firefox 3
roots. I'm not positive but this looks like it might only happen while
in full screen.

Also of important note is that I'm using twinview on a nvidia 6600 with
moderate desktop effects enabled via the Appearance tab. This might have
something to do with partial transparencies in Window decorations. Sorry
I can't be more helpful, but let me know how I can help. Attempts to get
a screenshot of this thus far have failed.

[Bug 200873] [NEW] firefox 3.0 png rendering on localhost vs. server

2008-03-10 Thread euxneks
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

PNG rendering is inconsistent on localhost vs. live server.

With the attached png for instance, I can see it as it should be on the
localhost just fine at 77x77px, but when I upload to a server, the png
renders differently, as if scaled by 8px, 4 on each side - resulting in
an image of size 85x85px.

I've used other browsers (IceWeasel) and confirmed this is not a server
problem on my side, but a Firefox specific bug..

I am currently using Hardy Heron and Firefox 3.0b3

cat /etc/lsb-release:
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu hardy (development branch)"

What I expected to happen: Render the image at a true 77 x 77px
What actually happened: The png image was rendered at 85 x 85px

[Bug 200874] [NEW] Sound Card disabled in BIOS being used

2008-03-10 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

I have disabled my on-board  VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller
(rev 60) on my KT600 motherboard, yet it's still showing up on lspci and
is selected as the default device despite my PCI C-Media CM8738 being
the one I need to use. Windows does not pick up on the sound device when
I disable it via the BIOS, Linux really shouldn't either. This might be
an upstream problem, but this is a very potentially confusing issue for
those with a disabled sound card. I had to fix this by manually setting
sound card indexes in a configuration file on Gutsy, but that's not
something a typical user should have to do, as it's counter to bug #1.

I'm running Hardy Alpha 6 with all available updates applied. Here is my

[Bug 200872] [NEW] gnome-screenshot has no lower panel or alt+tab entry

2008-03-10 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

The Gnome "Screenshot" application, gnome-screenshot, doesn't show an
entry in the lower task bar and isn't reachable via ALT+TAB. While this
may be done in some way to prevent the entry from being shown in
screenshots, it does introduce a usability problem. If I open the
screenshot app, switch back to my full-screen app to make an adjustment,
and want to get back to gnome-screenshot, there is no way to do so
without moving windows. Some users may open up another instance of
gnome-screenshot, which isn't ideal.

This is more of a usability issue than anything. Perhaps we could see
about making this show up in the task bar except in full desktop
screenshots? Or at least making it reachable via ALT+TAB?

Re: [Bug 196429] Re: evince/evolution/gtk-print-dialog printing and system-config-printer fail when using client.conf with IP address for which there is no reverse look-up available

2008-03-10 Thread Brian Litzinger
On Sat, Mar 08, 2008 at 03:05:09PM -, Sebastien Bacher wrote:
> Could you describe easy steps to create the issue?

I assume you have some sort of non-network printer being served
by a cups server on machine 192.168.1.16 (any IP will do).

On a client machine

edit /etc/cups/client.conf so it reads

ServerName 192.168.1.16

Arrange for there to be no reverse DNS mapping for 192.168.1.16
on your client machine.

That would mean make sure it is not defined in /etc/hosts, and
that your DNS server has no reverse resolution for 192.168.1.16.
I would suggest getting rid of any forward resolution if you
want to be extra sure.

Make sure there are no caching DNS data tables laying about on
the client machine.

Basically you want this command

% host 192.168.1.16

to return

Host 16.1.186.192.in-addr.arpa not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

on the client machine.

restart cupsys on the client machine.

Use the GTK print dialog from evince or the system menu
print configurator.

The GTK print dialog will show a greyed out print button.

The print configurator will report an error reaching cups.

However, cups is working fine. lpr and other non-GTK
dialog print code will all work.

[Bug 200869] [NEW] expo splits across screens in twinview

2008-03-10 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

When I use expo with twinview in the latest updated Hardy release, it's
split across both of my monitors, making it really hard to see, rather
than just in my primary monitor. My xorg.conf was largely generated by
nvidia-settings. Most things seem to work just fine, including scale and
moving workspaces (the workspace display block appears in the center of
the primary monitor).

[Bug 145887] Re: Gutsy Beta: Tablet Notebook's Stylus Not Working

2008-03-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Upstream's input-hotplug+HAL was not stable enough for Hardy so we've
postponed the work until Hardy+1. Additionally, I'm not certain the
wacom driver was updated to take advantage of input hotplug anyway.

Anyway, this bug cannot be solved for hardy, so we need to postpone it.

If wacom input-hotplug is still not ready in hardy+1, an alternative
would be to create an xorg.conf modification utility (similar to
displayconfig-gtk but for general changes including input devices).
Depending on how things look in the next xorg release, I may open a
specification for that.

[Bug 153118] Re: Feature request: zoom picture to fit screen

2008-03-10 Thread Gareth Fitzworthington
Can I confirm that you still would like to see this improvement?
If so, does the following summarise your idea?
   In Preferences -> Viewer tab ;
 Then in section: "After loading an Image" -> would like the additional
option "Fit to Window if Larger or Smaller".

Now, as you would be aware if the image is substantially smaller this would
produce a pixilated result. The first thing a developer will ask is why would
someone want this? We need to be able to provide a good argument if we want to
encourage action on this. Can you articulate why this would be useful to
yourself and perhaps others?

[Bug 200868] [NEW] nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2008-03-10 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

On the latest Hardy update, nvidia-settings doesn't seem to have
permissions to write the xorg.conf when you click the 'Save to

[Bug 200867] [NEW] After Hardy Alpha5 upgrade lvm partitions fail to mount

2008-03-10 Thread Stefan Lesicnik
Public bug reported:

I have now seen this bug on 3 different computers.

After the upgrade to alpha5, the system reboots and checks each
filesystem. The system then stops and drops the user into maintenance
mode to fix a file system that could not be checked.

In my case the filesystem is /opt and hardly crucial. A college of mine
had this happen to his /opt and /home filesystems.

Common in each case i've seen is LVM and reiserfs. Below is the dmesg
output when trying to mount the /opt filesystem manually.

To fix the problem, I have tried to reformat that partition with
reiserfs - but on a reboot, it is broken again. To solve the problem
permanently on one laptop, i formatted the partition with ext3 and
haven't seen the problem since.

I've downloaded the actual fglrx driver form the AMD Homepage, version 8.47.3
and installed it.
Now xine works fine and refreshrates over 60Hz are also possible.

Dropping the release task as per my comment #60. We do not have
confirmation that the gnash crash still exists in hardy. Feel free to
re-open if anyone can confirm the gnash bug is still present in Hardy or
newer. (And please be aware that unrelated bugs also generate similar-
sounding error messages, so doublecheck there.)

[Bug 200857] Re: I was having issues updating

2008-03-10 Thread Parthan
Thank you for filing the bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. As far
as I can see from the apt outputs you have pasted, you seem to miss out
the sudo part a lot of times when issuing the command. For using apt-get
or dpkg you always need to issue with sudo preceding it. At the same
time, you need not become root to do it, 'sudo' is available for you to
get super user permissions to do certain tasks. Also, you have to make
sure another service is not trying to do the same thing, like synaptic
or aptitude running when you are trying to issue apt-get command.

Regarding bug #158099, which you have mentioned, it is already marked to
have been fixed in Hardy (Ubuntu 8.04) which is now in alpha 6 and soon
to be released as LTS. Hence, it is closed as invalid. Even if this bug
is a duplicate of bug #158099, then it is also invalid.

Considering both the cases, this bug is marked as invalid but feel free
to open it again if you have more information to provide or confirm this
bug. Also, when providing output from any process or crash provide them
as individual attachments to the bug report rather than pasting them as
text into the bug report. It helps us to easily go through your bug
report. Thanks.

[Bug 196439] Re: hardy: uploading causes network lag

2008-03-10 Thread Savvas Radević
Normal downloads don't cause a problem, at least not here.
No, I tested it bare, firefox and apt-get or firefox and apport-cli

I have that one installed, I even set up the /etc/trickled.conf
I don't know if it's correct:
[firefox]
Priority = 1
Time-Smoothing = 0.1
Length-Smoothing = 2
[firefox-2]
Priority = 1
Time-Smoothing = 0.1
Length-Smoothing = 2
[firefox-3.0]
Priority = 1
Time-Smoothing = 0.1
Length-Smoothing = 2
[irssi]
Priority = 1
Time-Smoothing = 0.1
Length-Smoothing = 2
[wget]
Priority = 2
Time-Smoothing = 1
Length-Smoothing = 4
[update-manager]
Priority = 3
Time-Smoothing = 4
Length-Smoothing = 18
[apt-get]
Priority = 3
Time-Smoothing = 4
Length-Smoothing = 18
[update-notifier]
Priority = 3
Time-Smoothing = 4
Length-Smoothing = 18
[apport-cli]
Priority = 3
Time-Smoothing = 4
Length-Smoothing = 18
[apport-retrace]
Priority = 3
Time-Smoothing = 4
Length-Smoothing = 18
[apport-unpack]
Priority = 3
Time-Smoothing = 4
Length-Smoothing = 18

The bad thing with trickled is that the daemon doesn't autostart as a
service on each boot. And it doesn't say if it should be run with sudo
or normally

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The font used for the 'subject' line in the preview window changes when
switching to the vertical preview. All other fields in the preview
window are OK.

To reproduce:

1. Start Evolution using the default classic view.
2. Note the normal use of the users Gnome fonts for all fields in the preview
pane
3. Click 'View -> Preview -> Vertical View'
4. Note that the 'From' and 'Time' fields are correctly displayed
5. Note that the 'Subject' line has been changed to a monospace font.
