Re: [Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-03-18 Thread Akshay Srinivasan
Isn't that workaround meant for people with pm-utils ?The folder /etc/pm
does not exist by default.
Anyway , I executed hdparm with -B 200 and -S 242 , and well , my hard
drive just doesn't respond to them.It keeps working as it would on -B 128.
I suspect the firmware to my Hard disk is buggy. Can you send more
details of your Hard disks ?

Anyway, I received several confirms that iwl3945 works in general. This

[Bug 203825] [NEW] [hardy] GDM hangs on a black screen upon startup

2008-03-18 Thread TomasCassidy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

System: Mythbuntu 8.04 with autologin enabled (default for mythbuntu)
GPU: nVidia 8600GT

Sometimes when I startup the computer it hangs on a black screen and
doesnt appear to login. The mouse appears and can be moved around, but
nothing else happens. I can get the autologin to occur by going to the
VC at Ctrl+Alt+1 and running /etc/init.d/gdm restart.

2008-03-18 Thread Saïvann Carignan
** Description changed:

This bug seems to have been reported and fixed in feisty, but still
  exists in Gutsy.

When stopping kdm or pressing Ctrl+Alt+F(1-6) the screen is garbled, if
it stop kdm over ssh from another machine there is the message "usplash:
can't get console font: No space left on device" output.

- This seems to be a bug about the vga=791 set in my boot params (though
- i'm not sure as I don't want to disable this otherwise my system
- sometimes struggles to boot).

font setting.

On a hardy system (install from Alpha 6, up to date 3/18/2008), the
default fontconfig settings are set up so that 'Nimbuas Sans L" becomes
the default alias for 'arial'. This can be confirmed by running:

fc-match 'arial'

on the command line.

Nimbus Sans L has no hinting support, so under the default font
settings, it looks terrible. All web pages in firefox that specify
'arial' directly get rendered with this ugly font.

'arial' should probably get aliased to deja vu sans as in previous
releases. This is one of the few fonts that look good with 'full'
hinting settings.

Okay so in an effort to nail down the cause of this bug, lets try to get a few
things straight. Does your keyboard really have a numeric keypad?

Attached is the keyboard i've got (which doesn't have such a pad, so I wouldn't
be able to reproduce it).

So did these problems crop up for everyone right after the update to enable FN
key on the USB variety? An the real problem - is it that something weird
happens with the FN key or just with when numlock (of some variety) is pressed?

[Bug 95968] Re: n-m brings down slave interfaces like eth0:10

2008-03-18 Thread Paul Collins
I'd like to reopen this bug. I believe N-M has incorrect behavior in this case.
When a interface is reset (say network cable unplugged), and N-M brings back up
the primary interface, it should also bring up any aliased interfaces with it.
Case in point, I eth0 and eth0:0
eth0 is DHCP
eth0:0 is statically assigned
When the network goes down for whatever reason eth0 & eth0:0 go down. When it
comes back, eth0 comes back up but eth0:0 has to be done manually.
Additionally, N-M has no way for me to see the aliased interface or to interact
with it.

[Bug 195788] Re: Evolution 2.21.92 (hardy) crashes when attaching MS-Office files

2008-03-18 Thread Effenberg0x0
Hey hggdh, there's a new bug here after latest updates to Hardy.
Now when I send attached files with known extensions, like doc, pdf, jpg, etc
other people receive these files as .dat, .txt, depending on the client or
webmail service they use.

If you want I can send you a e-mail using evo so you can see what I am
talking about.

Regards,
Effenberg

Launchpad integration links in a different program. Both "Get help on-

[Bug 203419] Re: [Hardy] not able to get any output on dpkg -i linux-ubuntu-modules-$(uname -r)

2008-03-18 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Hi Daniel,
I used the wiki which has the following info. for debugging sound
problems :-

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems (although I don't have
any sound-related issues but)

was just going through the command.

doing the same gave me this output :-

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -i linux-ubuntu-modules-$(uname -r)
dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege

hence I used the 'sudo' command to do the same.

Which either means either the wiki is incorrect & the command is
something else (the point there is to generate a list of modules etc. )

Also subscribing u to the bug so you can put your informed understanding
& close it if its still invalid or incorrect but with what should be
proper info. Would update the wiki if its needed with the info.
provided.

Cheers.

[Bug 203817] [NEW] Ubuntu Hardy Heron Alpha06 wont connect to 2wire 1000HW

2008-03-18 Thread Shadow_Ryo_Nightfall
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Hardy Heron Alpha06 will not connect to my 2wire 1000HW with a custom
WEP key. It causes all the lights on the device to shut off and act like it is
first booting up, but any wired connections do not lose connectivity. I know
this version of Ubuntu works fine on newer models of this router and so far
that is the option I am pursuing to solve a host of problems at once. I am
running a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop with a BCM4311 wifi card. It isn't a problem
with the specific card (to my knowledge) because my usb adapter, WUSB54GC,
causes the same problem.
If you need more info, contact me at my e-mail address.
