[Bug 183061] Re: Linksys WUSB54GS v2 does not work with ubuntu

2008-03-22 Thread Steven Mitnick
I have a Linksys WUSB 54G using Ubuntu 7.10. The Network Manager says
there is a good signal. It even sees other password protected signals
from other wireless routers. However, it won't accept my password. After
processing the code for a minute or two the same Network Manager window
appears with a blank password space. The same thing happens if I try
using the Radar Wifi. Any suggestions on how I can get this to work?

[Bug 197819] Re: [Hardy]b43-fwcutter install script fails to fetch firmware in first run

2008-03-22 Thread Ben
Hi I have this problem as well. My applicable LSPCI information is:
Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN
Controller (rev 02)

After enabling restricted drivers in Beta, and installing bcm43xx-fwcutter
(after which it did not work and rebooting did not help)
I noticed an error that I would get every once in a while when watching
(whatever terminal you get when you press ctrl+alt+f1):

[ 2563.664354] b43-phy5 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found or load
failed.
[ 2563.664367] b43-phy5 ERROR: You must go to
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the
correct firmware (version 4).

after doing what you said in this thread:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/b43-fwcutter/+bug/197819/comments/7

the blue light instantly turned on and my computer began noticing
wireless networks. (Can't connect to 128-bit WEP wireless here on campus
though, but that probably belongs in another bug report).

Running 2.6.24-12-generic on HH Beta.

I should also mention that in Alpha 6 what I got to work apparently was
something along the lines of what this guy wrote here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/b43-fwcutter/+bug/197819/comments/14

I would bumble around installing/uninstalling that using the restricted
drivers option in HH and the Synaptic manager, while continually
installing bcm43xx-fwcutter. Not sure which it was that would get it to
work, it just mysteriously would work after rebooting.

I want to get this stamped out so if there's anything I can do to help
please let me know, I've signed up for emails, or email me directly if
it shows my email address (new to this).

2008-03-22 Thread michele
Excuse me about my english :(
in a first time, I upgraded from gutsy (where everythings work fine) to hardy,
but several things did not work correctly ... especially my wireless connection.
in a second time (after many and many attempts to make a working wireless
connection), I made a fresh new installation of kubuntu 8.04 beta, erasing and
ripartitioning the old partitions.
and my wireless connection still does not work ! (togheter nvidia-glx too)

[Bug 109211] Re: feisty doesn't work with external CD writers anymore

2008-03-22 Thread Wenzhuo Zhang
Just upgraded to Hardy beta. This bug still exists. If the piix module
does not conflict with anything, I propose retaining it until this bug
gets fixed, so that users can still use their external CD/DVD writers in

[Bug 190514] Re: gnome-vfs-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in _dl_fixup()

2008-03-22 Thread miked
Does this really make sense ?
it's tagged as "need-i386-retrace", you wrote that "automatic retracer will
pick it up and do a stacktrace", so stop sending (non-useful) info until then.
a month later you post that your closing it because it needs more info ? and
it's still tagged as needing i386-retrace.
do you want me to do the i386-retrace, and the stacktrace since your automatic
system did not ?
closing this bug, basically does not fix the bug, that is in a final product.
what' s up with the auto-system ?, I know sometimes the auto-stuff does not get
a valid-useable result, but was it even tried here ?
I would ask "what commands do I need to run for you'all" but, that hard drive
is not connected on this computer right now, so I probably could not give much
further info anyway. It just sounds like there is a jumping of the gun to close
the bug as Invalid, when it should probably marked as Incomplete at least. Both
labels make it sound like I did something wrong or just bug dumped, but that is
another thing altogether. Maybe it doesn't matter, the final product is out
already out, maybe it's been fixed already, maybe somebody loaded this on there
friend's computer to show them how cool ubuntu is, and for them to try it and
this bug came up. Or maybe not.

[Bug 33617] Overheating or some memory problem?

2008-03-22 Thread Telordya
I made another experience which could give more clues (I kept the same
xorg.conf file and always without battery installed):

1- shutdown, unplugged everything for 1 minute, plugged the AC
2- powered it on, xorg desktop boots fine, glxgears during 30 minutes and other
3D apps without lock
3- safely reboot via KDE
4- xorg desktop boots fine again, run glxgears during 30 minutes and other 3D
apps without lock
5- safely shutdown via KDE for 1 minute
6- powered it on, xorg is only a black screen, hear start-up sound
7- pressing the laptop power button to safely shutdown, the laptop shutdown
completely by itself
8- let the laptop cool for about 1 hour but WITH AC adaptor still CONNECTED!
9- all laptop seems at the room temperature
10- powered it on, strange, xorg desktop boots fine and run glxgears without
lock
11- safely shutdown via KDE for 10 minutes
12- powered it on, xorg is only a black screen, hear start-up sound, seems not
freezing

With this experience, we could think that there is an overheating
problem or some persistence in a chipset memory (AGP, BIOS, video...)
that is "cleaned" with time or with complete power down. Maybe I am
completely wrong... or maybe not.

My summary should have the information you need. Everything seems to
work fine once the card initializes OK, but that can sometimes take
5-10 (or more) insertions in either PC Card slot - there does not seem
to be a pattern. I imagine that is the real cause for this error, but
there may be another tied to ubuntu-docs as well. I was automatically
brought to this site after the problem. It was right after the upgrade
from 7.1 to 8.04 Beta. The inplace upgrade went flawlessly (so far)
with the exception of the reboot at the end of the upgrade not
completing (forcing me to hardboot the computer - no disk activity for

of the errors noted. If I can be of further assistance, please let me

The new world clock in Hardy has its own dialog for setting the system
data and time, accessible by right clicking it and selecting "adjust

[Bug 205359] [NEW] Unable to install Hardy Beta Desktop i386

2008-03-22 Thread kidcharles
Public bug reported:

I was unable to install Hardy Heron Beta Desktop i386 (downloaded on
2008-03-22) on my physical machine. Four attempts were made:

1. Chose "Install" from the LiveCD boot menu (which bypasses the live
session). I chose a "manual" partitioning. Windows 2000 is installed on
the machine, as well as an earlier Ubuntu installation, using two
partitions. I chose to leave the Windows partitions alone, format the
partition previously mounted as /, and not format the partition mounted
as '/home'. The installation progressed but part of the way through an
error message popped up with the title "Failed to copy files; faulty
CD/DVD or hard disk?" saying that the CD or hard drive has a problem.
This is the text of the error:

"The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:

[Errno 5] Input/output error

This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or
a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD
at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are
often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard
disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a
cooler environment."

(The spelling "Errno" is not my mistake, it is spelled that way in the
error message.) The CD has been checked multiple times for errors and
there is nothing known wrong with the hard drive or DVD drive (after
failing to install Hardy, I was able to install Kubuntu 7.10 on the
machine without errors). The install stops and drops to the live session
desktop.

2. Booted into a Live session and double-clicked on the "Install" icon
on the desktop. Same selections for partitioning as above. Curiously in
the "Migrate Documents and Settings" step the Windows installation was
not detected. The installation progressed past the input screens, but
before finishing the progress bar indicator simply disappeared, dropping
to the Live session desktop. A reboot of the computer shows that at the
very least grub was not properly installed. What was probably the
previous grub installation crashed with Error 15.

3. Tried again using same method as 2. but after going all the way
through Step 7 of 7, clicking Next to start the install caused the
installer to drop back to Step 4 of 7 for partitioning. Every time step
7 was reached and the install was begun, it immediately dropped back to
step 4.

4. Same as in 3. but checked boxes to format both the partitions ('/'
and '/home'). Again the installer dropped back to step 4 after the final
step 7.

I suspect there is a problem with the partitioning I am trying to do but
there should not be.

Hello,

I know it is a gross hack, but I was 100% sure that ubuntu-release would not
like to change to a new package this late in the release cycle. Therefore, I
have resorted to this solution which would:

a) basically not default to the not-so-tested package in Hardy
b) would allow beginners to have proper openal support in Hardy using a single
command
c) would allow more people to test the new package
d) hopefully make the shift to the new package more acceptable for the next
Ubuntu release

[Bug 31830] Re: Incorrect screen resolution in Dapper LiveCD

2008-03-22 Thread adair
I'm afraid this problem has reappeared (at least for me) in the Hardy
beta. I used to have it regularly in earlier versions of ubuntu, but not
in Gutsy, nor, I think, in Feisty.

It's a Dell Latitude C600 with an ATI Mobility 128 graphics chipset. The
boot process, with or without splash, is fine, but X is offering a top
resolution of 800x600. Also, and more seriously, the screen is broken
into three unequal vertical sections, effectively three partial
projections of the desktop---exactly the same old problem that I thought
I'd seen the last of some time ago!

Has anyone else got this problem (I've got one or two others including
an hard drive install that fails around the 60% mark, but that's not
relevant to this). Happy days!!!

[Bug 205355] [NEW] Hardy: latest version of hal, libhal1 and/or libhal-storage1 causing wireless to stop working

2008-03-22 Thread Nathan MacInnes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

When logging in, the my Broadcom BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI wireless card
(drivers installed with ndiswrapper) doesn't connect. It keeps trying to
connect, but doesn't succeed. If I try to disable networking by right-
clicking the tray icon, the checkbox clears, but it still keeps trying

[Bug 185470] Re: iwl3945 not functioning : microcode error

2008-03-22 Thread Ricardo Rodríguez
Hello...

Hardy 8.04 Beta, new install on XPS m1210 laptop and wifi not working. I
think this is weird because I actually get IP from my DLink wireless
router (and good quality signal, I can see it in the wifi blue icon),
but "ping 192.168.0.1" gives me *Destination Host Unreachable*.

Wired network in this box and wifi on another Dell laptop (Windows XP)
are working without problems, so isn't a problem with DLink router.
Before this install, Wifi on Windows XP and Gentoo was working.

Any ideas?

PD: Sorry about my english :s

[Bug 205349] [NEW] install from usb

2008-03-22 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: systeminstaller

I am trying to install Kubuntu 8.04 beta from USB. I have never attempted a USB
install before, so I used this page as a guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
I used the isotostick.sh script linked to on that page.

When I boot from USB I get the Kubuntu graphic with the following text:
"The default installation is suitable for most desktop or laptop systems. Press
F1 for help and advanced installation options.
To install only the command-line base system, type 'cli' then ENTER. For the
default installation, press ENTER."

I press enter, then I get this error message:
"could not find kernel image: /install./vm"

I googled the error, and the only hit was to the following thread on the Ubuntu
forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=71567&page=3

The user DaBruGo posted some changes that he made to the syslinux.cfg file. I
used his syslinux.cfg file, which suggests a kernel location of "vmlinuz"
instead of"/install/vmlinuz", but got a rather similar error message:
"could not find kernel image: vmlinux"

The hardware is a Dell Inspiron E1505 / 6400 with a 2gHz Intel DuoCore2
processor, 2GB RAM, ATI X1400 graphics, and 1680x1050 display. The 80GB
hard drive has an Hardy-alpha6 on sda1 (15 GB), my daily driver Feisty
on sda2 (15 GB), 3 GB swap on sda3, and about 45GB on sda4 which is
mounted at /home.

2008-03-22 Thread sojourner
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 203668 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203668

I also have been getting this randomly for a couple of weeks , selecting quit
seems to freeze something , mouse pointer moves but clicks do nothing , a
couple of monitors I have running are updating so the display isnt frozen but
it takes about 2 minutes for the shutdown dialog box to appear. and this
dosen't happen every shutdown or seem to be associated with what I was doing
just before shutdown , from old habit I manualy shutdown all non autostart apps
before hitting quit.

[Bug 192888] Re: firefox crashes on flash contents

2008-03-22 Thread gadm
I confirm the bug. Under gutsy, flash animations like youtube videos
used to cause epiphany-browser to crash from time to time while
unloading the animation. Now that I upgraded to hardy beta, this happens
way more often, like on 50% of the animations. This is not reproducible
for each animation.

However, I was able to find an animation which seems to trigger the bug
repeatedly (or at least a bug with the same symptoms): it is the big
animation at the top of http://www.makinghistory.upenn.edu/ .

(Directions:
> Let the animation play until the end and watch the browser hang
> Re-load and press the "skip intro" button to witness the same effect)

Hope it helps.

[Bug 188787] Re: no wacom tablet driver

2008-03-22 Thread Santiago Pence
Hardy version of wacom driver actually is 0.7.9.3, it has some
workaround for X.org 7.3 , but the latest is 0.7.9.8 and it has better
support for X.org 7.3 than the actual package on hardy (my Bamboo tablet
seems to be fully functional with this version), the mantainer of wacom-
tools and xorg-input-wacom should upgrade it as fast as possible before
the final release.

PS: X.org 7.3 seems to have improved hotplugin for input devices, I
think that´s the reason beacuse there aren´t any entries on xorg.conf
configuration file.

[Bug 205352] [NEW] restricted-manager does not offer or recognise b43legacy firmware

2008-03-22 Thread monoi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: restricted-manager

Using latest beta of Ubuntu hardy;

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release:8.04

I have a Broadcom BCM43036 rev 02 chip:-

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo lspci -nnv | fgrep BCM -A1
01:03.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g
Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 02)
Subsystem: Dell TrueMobile 1300 WLAN Mini-PCI Card [1028:0001]

The restricted drivers manager did not offer me firmware for this chip
-- instead, I had to install it manually using "sudo apt-get install
b43-fwcutter".

Now it is installed (and working), jockey-gtk does not list it as in
use.

The driver in use is b43legacy (not b43).
