[Bug 222939] Re: Driver nVidia GeForce 8400M GS (rev a1) Fails in Hardy

2008-05-02 Thread Félim Whiteley
Hi agarwaen,

Thanks for your update, I might give that a shot, but as of this morning
a new update was rolled out, so I'm going to try that. I'd like to avoid
installing the Nvidia one as it was like this in Fiesty, Gutsy fixed it,
I'm hoping not to take backwards steps...

I'll update with how I get on, maybe this update will fix our problems !

Can only hope.

[Bug 195079] Re: BibleTime in Hardy alpha5 crashes with signal 11 (SIGSEGV)

2008-05-02 Thread Nigel Ridley
I too am somewhat frustrated by the [well] known bugs and can confirm that the
open bugs affecting bibletime 1.6.4 are still there in Hardy Heron final.
Please include 1.6.5 in the Hardy repos.

As a side note:
I did try to install Bibletime 1.6.5 from
ftp://ftp.mepis.com/mepis/dists/mepis-7.0/main/binary-i386/
but there were dependency problems:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i bibletime_1.6.5_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 181784 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace bibletime 1.6.4.dfsg-0ubuntu3 (using
bibletime_1.6.5_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement bibletime ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of bibletime:
 bibletime depends on libclucene0 (>= 0.9.16a-1); however:
  Package libclucene0 is not installed.
dpkg: error processing bibletime (--install):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 bibletime

So, I tried the obvious (install libclucene0) but also got dependency
problems:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i libclucene0_0.9.16a-1_i386.deb
[sudo] password for nigel:
Selecting previously deselected package libclucene0.
dpkg: regarding libclucene0_0.9.16a-1_i386.deb containing libclucene0:
 libclucene0ldbl conflicts with libclucene0 (<< 0.9.16a-3)
libclucene0 (version 0.9.16a-1) is to be installed.
dpkg: error processing libclucene0_0.9.16a-1_i386.deb (--install):
conflicting packages - not installing libclucene0
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libclucene0_0.9.16a-1_i386.deb

Blessings,

Nigel

[Bug 221645] Re: Thinkpad T30 LCD does not turn off during suspend to ram

2008-05-02 Thread AnthonyBoynes
Tonight I decided to put Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 on the same Thinkpad T30. I
installed it over the Hardy Heron partition, letting it format and
install fresh. Gutsy Gibbon suspends to ram normally and DOES turn off
the display, as should be the case. Suspend to disk also works normally
with Gutsy Gibbon the T30.

[Bug 226025] [NEW] Duplicate icons in menu with kde4 and kde3

2008-05-02 Thread Sameer Grover
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-kde4-desktop

I'm using Hardy with ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-dekstop and kubuntu-
kde4-desktop packages installed. The main menu in Gnome has two entries
for KDE packages - two Kate entries, two Konqueror entries and so on.
Instead of one pointing to the kde3 version and the other to kde4 one,
both are duplicates of each other and fire up kde3 apps when selected.

The same thing happens for every application; whenever both the kde3 and
kde4 versions are installed, eg. yakuake and yakuake-kde4

But if only the kde4 versoin is installed, a menu entry is added to
gnome that points to nowhere.

[Bug 226026] [NEW] Internet connection times out/not working

2008-05-02 Thread Carsten Agger
Public bug reported:

Using a wired Ethernet card for connectivity.

When booting the computer, Network Manager detects the card and I get an
IP address, and the Internet works very briefly.

After a couple of second's use of the Internet connection, the
connection apparently "times out" or at least expires; during normal
browsing, I'm typically able to read the first page I load but not the
second. When reading mail, it usually manages to download only about
half my mail before the connection dies.

I can then right click Network Manager, uncheck "Enable Networking",
wait a sec, check "Enable Networking" once again, which makes it connect
and get the computer an IP address, etc ... whereuopn I once again have
a few second's worth of Internet connection.

So what did I do? Nothing, as far as I know; the system comes from a
clean Gutsy install dating from November, recently (after release)
upgraded to Hardy by the Upgrade Manager. The day it went wrong I
installed some KVM extensions, found out KVM can't run on my CPU as it
doesn't support virtualization optimization, and ended up simulating a
Debian-derived system in Qemu instead. AFAIK that's the only things I've
done the last days which might affect the kernel and its drivers.

Nothing appears to be wrong with the hardware - if I boot into windows,
wired networking works just fine.

Here is some sample output from ifconfig:

"eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:17:53:10:5f
  inet addr:84.238.94.107 Bcast:84.238.94.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Here is the Ethernet card's entry from lspci:

04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI
Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)
Please note that the fix proposed in bug #136836, namely to enter the lines:

# rmmod forcedeth
# modprobe forcedeth msi=0 msix=0
# /etc/init.d/networking restart

does NOT solve the problem, thus I suppose the problem is not the same.

You seem to have a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware and must use an activated,
different device under /dev/mapper/, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1)
to mount NTFS. Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for help.

Power cycling fixed the device. I will note this drive is a bit old and
noisy but has never presented any issues when in use on my fileserver
(connected internally). The issues are also not present in windows xp on
any machines. I would suspect ntfs to be contributing to the issue but
the other identical psc has the same issue though it doesnt not need to
be power cycled as often.

I did contact welland regarding the issue and the had this to say:

Dear Customer,

Thanks for your mail and purchased our product.
Pls. use our power saving AP tool to control the time of power down.

By the way, may I know where are you from? Thanks.

I does seem they didnt realise I am in linux but I will plug these psc
into a windows pc, use the tool to raise the timeout and retry. The
latest kernel does not seem to fix the issue after all but it does seem
an improvement.

[Bug 155061] Re: slocate typo: "serach_db"

2008-05-02 Thread James Westby
Hi,

Thanks for updating the patch. It looks good to me now, hopefully
someone with the power can upload it now.

As for sending the patch to Debian, it's a straightforward one, so
you don't need to bother about trying to build it. If you just
forward the meat of your patch to the bug report it should be
fine (i.e. leave off the changelog difference).

Thanks,

James

Sorry, that was a bit over the top, especially out of context... :-(

So, you'd like to see the output of:

If so, I'll do that on a laptop that I'll upgrade soon and see if the

[Bug 226022] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron - System locks up when returning from standby

2008-05-02 Thread James D. Hasselman
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I have noticed a problem with Hardy Heron. I am not sure exactly how to
describe this problem, but I will do my best. I apologize in advance if I am
not clear. This problem seems to occur whenever I bring my system back up
after a long standby period. The OS boots up fine and I can log in, but I
cannot start any of my applications. For example, earlier today I was trying
to check my bank account balance so I tried to open up firefox. The system
appeared to be active for a few seconds but firefox never started. I looked in
the system monitor and found firefox listed under the process tab and its
status said sleeping. I tried to start firefox a second time and once again
there was another entry in the system monitor, but its status also said
sleeping. I ended both processes and attempted to start firefox again but the
same thing happened. The same problem also occurred with the evolution mail
program. I was also unable to log out or shutdown the machine. It seems that
any processes started prior to the long standby period continue to function,
but no new processes can be started.

[Bug 217254] Re: open-vm-tools is an alpha quality release

2008-05-02 Thread Will Uther
It is a pity that these tools are missing. While perhaps only 'alpha'
quality, the official vmware tools are currently broken on hardy,
whereas the open tools work. Even the vmware blogs are pointing to
them:

http://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2008/05/linux-2624-and.html

Perhaps adding a "warning: unsupported" would have been better than
removing them entirely.

Is there any chance of bringing them back?

[Bug 226019] [NEW] system crash when using aireplay-ng

2008-05-02 Thread Alex Watson
Public bug reported:

When I run 'sudo aireplay-ng -0 5 -e [SOME ESSID] wlan0' it says
something about sending broadcast deauth to [SOME MAC ADDRESS] and it
just hangs there. When I try to ctrl+c it doesn't do anything.
However, the system is fine until I try to do something with the wlan0
interface. If I, for example, right-click on the network applet icon in
the system tray and click 'enable networking' the system completely
freezes. I cannot move the mouse or do ctrl+alt+backspace after this
occurs and I am forced to do a hard shutdown.

[Bug 226015] [NEW] Unable to enable nvidia restricted drivers in Hardy

2008-05-02 Thread Cesar Kawakami
Public bug reported:

I've just upgraded from 7.10 to 8.04. After having to activate the nv
driver manually, since GDM insisted in starting in low graphics mode,
I'm now unable to activate nvidia restricted drivers through jockey
(Hardware Drivers). Nvidia drivers simply don't show up. "No proprietary
drivers are in use...".

Running jockey-gtk through console gives "modinfo for module nvidia*
failed: modinfo: could not find module nvidia*" for nvidia_new, nvidia,
nvidia_legacy and nvidia_new.

I already tried reinstalling nvidia-glx and linux-restricted-modules
through apt-get - this seemed to fix the problem to many users, but it
didn't work for me.

Forcing modprobe (after editing xorg.conf to use nvidia drivers) gives:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/firer# modprobe -v nvidia
install /sbin/lrm-video nvidia
FATAL: Error running install command for nvidia

I don't know if this relates to this problem, but I just upgraded the
kernel to version 2.6.24-17.

[Bug 226014] [NEW] blacklisted e1000 module still loading

2008-05-02 Thread David Burgess
Public bug reported:

My Intel motherboard has onboard intel GBE. I am also using an intel pro
1000 PT card. Both should be using the e1000e driver, but the latter
loads the e1000 module by default
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/222831), so lsmod
shows both the e1000 and e1000e modules loaded on a fresh boot.

I added a line "blacklist e1000" to the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist,
but after a reboot e1000 is loaded again for the pro 1000 pt. This can
be corrected by doing "rmmod e1000e && rmmod e1000 && modprobe e1000e &&
/etc/init.d/networking restart". I'm not sure if it's necessary to
restart the networking but it works.

Pedro, I am currently using the production release of 8.04 Desktop after

not have the same issues as I did with the Release Candidate. You may
close this defect if you'd like. However, if you would like me to test
again I can try to find the old iso and send the log file. Please let
me know if you would still like to continue work on this.

2008-05-02 Thread fields_g
I started bug #225480. It is a duplicate of this and have marked it as
such, but I did have something else to add to this:

I tried to play around with the "Custom Location" service type and now I
know there is something wrong. Here's what I found when I put in various
URIs:

http://xx.com/users/myaccount -> Firefox opens and asks for
authentication, followed by web interface.

https://xx.com/users/myaccount -> Same behavior as http

dav://xx.com/users/myaccount -> "Can't display location
"dav://xx.com/users/myaccount" HTTP Error: Moved Temporarily"

davs://xx.com/users/myaccount -> Nautilius prompts for User/Pass,
then says "Can't display location "dav://xx.com/users/myaccount"
HTTP Error:Not Found" BUT! a network folder is mounted (appears on
desktop and under places in Nautilus) named "WebDAV on xx.com" and
clicking on it opens a properly usable net folder.

I know this has been marked for fontconfig, but I think it may also have
to do with libfreetype.

2008-05-02 Thread frankie
i'm running hardy amd64 on a santa rosa macbook 3.1 and i'm having this
problem too...

obviously i've tried the above suggestions but with no luck.
i'd also like to say i'm impressed with how well hardy is running, i was
slightly apprehensive reading

as i'm a n00b, but so far, the sound has been my only problem, so, keep up the
good work :D

[Bug 225319] Re: 'cpuinfo' says 9999 MHz & scaling not working on P4 laptop

2008-05-02 Thread Gareth Fitzworthington
Can you try booting with the following kernel option and report findings
here?

1/ acpi=off

Thanks.

Passing to Ubuntu-Kernel-Team for further look.
While this maybe BIOS or acpi problem it is odd that a CPU freq. of 10GHz is
reported. Can't see where this is coming from. As stated above it may be
confusion as a result of "max speed" less than "current speed" (see dmidecode
result).

[Bug 61235] Re: USB mass storage stops working after a while

2008-05-02 Thread Jacob Jarick
I have had both welland power saving drives fail with the errors since the
140gb copy. Interestingly the failures only seem to happen after the drives
have been idle for a long time (~ 1 hour +). Seems doing a ls /mnt/usb3 will
fail or return a weird listing. The devices will resume working (which never
used to on earlier kernels) after doing this:
umount drive
Power cycle drive
mount drive.

here is my /var/log/messages from when I was getting the drive back online:

[Bug 225998] [NEW] Screenshot shows transparency instead of other monitor

2008-05-02 Thread Eric Springer
Public bug reported:

I'm using gnome, two monitors configured with xinerama by the nvidia
drivers. When "Take Screenshot" program attempts to take a screenshot,
it only is taking a screenshot of my left (primary) monitor -- and
filling the area where the right monitor should be, with transparency.
(As can be seen by attached screenshot)

The screenshot should be of both monitors - or preferably give the
option of what to choose. But definitely shouldn't only show 1 monitor
with the rest transparent.
