[Bug 229034] Re: nvidia module not found (hardy 2.6.25-1 & 173.08 beta driver

2008-05-10 Thread dino99
thank Jean-Baptiste, it's already done but the kernel 2.6.25 need an nvidia
driver higher than the one (169.12) present in the repo. there is a next stable
driver avaliable (171.) so please update it in repo and make it upgradable with
envyng.
Hardy really need 2.6.25 kernel with the good drivers: make it as soon as
possible.
regards.

[Bug 229176] [NEW] xorg.conf sync out of range in mostly all full screen mode games.....

2008-05-10 Thread joegiampaoli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

In HArdy 32 bit, when running mostly any fullscreen games from repos I
get a lot of "Sync out of range" errors. I have Nvidia installed with
envyNG, my original resolution is 1280x1024, this only happens with most
of fullscreen mode games. Somethig that has to do with the new
xorg.conf.

[Bug 155668] Re: Problems with default KDE splash screen after upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy

The version of KDE in Hardy (3.5.9) doesn't seem to have a splash screen
(at least I couldn't find a splash screen module in kcontrol, and it
doesn't appear by default when logging in). So I don't know how this is
applicable to Hardy.

I experienced the same bug when trying to mount a fat32 partition.
Especially annoying is that all my confused keystroke commands were
'queued' and they executed after I somehow got the OS to respond,
(turning the machine off with those cntrl-alt-deletes of course)

[Bug 229172] [NEW] Rhythmbox 0.11.5 wont play audio unless another app starts audio first

2008-05-10 Thread Yanni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Upon restarting Ubuntu Hardy, 8.04, if I launch RB 0.11.5 and ask it to play a
mp3, it says it has an unknown error and is unable to play.
If i use another app, eg, vlc, and try to play a track it works, then if i use
RB, it works.

It seems that RB cant open the audio path to the soundcard ? and another
app has to establish it first ?

[Bug 174310] Re: Graphics or blank area obscures text in Firefox, Galeon, and Epiphany

2008-05-10 Thread Peter Belew
The site the problem appeared on has changed since last December, so I
would not be able to reproduce this and can not right now either. I
don't expect to have a more recent version of Ubuntu that 6.06 LTS
running on anything in the near future, either, though I do have Debian
4.0 running on one system.

At any rate, the display on Windows and Linux definitely was different.
Not a CSS problem since IE and Firefox worked equally well on Windows
XP.

[Bug 98955] Re: logd not running

2008-05-10 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Hi all,
From whatever little I know of Upstart wasn't it designed to replace sysvinit
in the first place.

Dunno if this is the right thing or not but from what I read it seems to
say that Upstart is not able to play along nicely with logd or vice-
versa.

I don't like the idea of using scripts or packages from other places
which are not verified either from QA perspective or other things as
well.

My issue is can we hope to see this issue resolved during the Intrepid
cycle. I'll be hopping to the Intrepid cycle around the 24th-26th of
this month till when the tool-chain would be done.

Looking forward for comments and suggestions on the same.

[Bug 144323] Re: No Sound After Hibernation U205-S5067

2008-05-10 Thread Steven Rowat
Hi,
I've just acquired a dual-boot Thinkpad T22 (Windows/Ubuntu on partitioned
drive), and I'm a Mac user so sorry if I make a clumsy report. Much of the
terminology is new to me.

I seem to have the same bug on HH 8.04, and also it's the same for
Suspend as it is for Hibernate: no sound after resuming. Everything else
seems normal after Suspend/Hibernate.

Also, I checked with Live CD HH8, and the same thing happened there - I
suspended the LiveCD and it came back fine, but the sound was gone.

Sound is also missing in the Tests in the Sound Preferences at the same
time. Plus, a message "Testing Pipeline is not responding" appears.

I'll also note that after Suspend there is one other oddity: a small
message in the lower right corner of the screen that said something like
"Computer did not resume properly after sleep." Unfortunately I clicked
the 'don't show this message again' so I don't have the exact wording.

steven r.

[Bug 227776] Re: [hardy] fullscreen games run in maximized window mode if desktop effects are enabled

2008-05-10 Thread encompass
I can confirm this with warsow, tremulous, and many other programs. This did
not happen in gutsy.
We had setup a lan party and had 25 computers running and they all had compiz
by default. Talk about embarrassing when all of these people that we are
telling linux is so cool, have to go threw the steps to shut off visual
effects. To me this is a big show stopper bug.
We were not using the nvidia cards. These were intel 3100 and I have the same
issue on my laptop, intel 945.

I can also confirm this. It also happens in other games like tremulous
that screen will slowly fade durring gameplay and suddenly comback just
after the screen save has started. (Probably because the windwo focus

2008-05-10 Thread DWHagar
I had to reinstall Gutsy to do work on the system, then after several
failed install attempts (due to issues not related to Ubuntu), I finally
got Hardy installed on a partition for testing and to fill out more
information in the bug report here, and it started working again.

I have no idea why it started working again the only difference was I
marked the system to not install backport or postponed updates.

On a separate note, can't apport hook to SIGSEGV and abort() calls? It
is very confusing when the program's window simply disappears without a

[Bug 229162] [NEW] Canberra (Australia) not listed in timezones

2008-05-10 Thread David G Jones
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, there is no timezone listing for Canberra,
Australia. This requires selection of either the Sydney or Melbourne
timezones. Although Canberra is nominally in the same Australian
Eastern timezone as Sydney and Melbourne, it is located in a separate
territory (Australian Capital Territory) with its own legal
jurisdiction, and occasionally has different start and end dates for
daylight saving. It should be listed as a distinct timezone location.

Canberra is the national capital of Australia, with a population of ~
350,000 people, was one of the original development centres for Linux
(Samba), and has a large population of Linux users. By comparison, some
of the Australian locations listed have populations of less than 100
people, and very few Linux users (eg Eucla).

For the record, the Australian capital cities are:

Canberra(national capital)
Sydney (state capital, New South Wales)
Melbourne (state capital, Victoria)
Brisbane (state capital, Queensland)
Adelaide (state capital, South Australia)
Hobart(state capital, Tasmania)
Perth (state capital, Western Australia)
Darwin(territory capital, Northern Territory)

[Bug 229159] [NEW] Hardy crashes - requires hard reset

2008-05-10 Thread JorgeBurgos
Public bug reported:

I have just completed a fresh install of Hardy 8.04. The same problem was
occurring after I upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy, and I was hoping a fresh
install would repair the problem but it appears not.
I cannot use Ubuntu for longer than about 20 minutes before everything starts
locking up. The mouse slows down and no new programs will open. Existing
programs may work for a while but then crash.

At this point I hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and I end up in a non-graphical
session. Sometimes I am prompted for a username, other times the screen
is empty or filled with error messages. I can type, and my letters
appear on the screen, but I cannot login or do anything. If I hit Ctrl-
Alt-Delete, the computer does not restart. I have to hard reset the
computer.

Whilst in the non-graphical session, I get a series of error messages. I
don't know how to copy and paste these, so I've written down a few on
paper. In no particular order, the error messages include things like:

EXT3-fs error (device sda1): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted

It's not possible to play most of the games I tried. Specific games
that couldn't be started are: Roodoku, Word Poker, and Goparokko.

[Bug 9054] Re: gedit does not read from a pipe

2008-05-10 Thread Mike Rooney
Hello, I would just like to add that this also affects Hardy.

Also I appreciate the workaround Igor, but it is unwieldy and assumes
you have write access to the working directory, which is not always
going to be the case.

The upstream bug report seems somewhat stagnant; a patch or two is
provided but from what I gather they are too old to be applicable to the
current codebase.

[Bug 229117] Re: rhythmbox crashed with a segfault

2008-05-10 Thread Rui Boon
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is missing . Please follow
these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that
can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in
/etc/default/apport and restart.
$ sudo gedit /etc/default/apport
Change enabled=0 to enabled=1
$ sudo /etc/init.d/apport restart

Try to reproduce the crash.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 229157] [NEW] Intel 965Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (with latest kernel available GM S-Video TV Outp

2008-05-10 Thread mindracer
Public bug reported:

I've been trying for 2 days straight to get S-Video output on my new laptop on
Hardy. The screen is always black. The monitor shows up as "unknown" in
Screen Resolution, doesnt work with or without Clone option.

Function-F4: Doesnt work in X. It works only during boot time, you see
the ubuntu logo then both laptop and TV black.

Xrandr 1.2 gives:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1680 x 1680

Tried different options with xorg.conf, many times had to enter recovery mode
of ubuntu to reset my settings. Most suggestions were taken from googl'ing or
searching ubuntu forums.
Updated to the latest kernel pre-release available because I saw somewhere of a
bug with 965 and 8.04LTS kernel.

By accident, i put my laptop to sleep. When i booted up (with the s-video
cable in), alas I have a clone of my laptop at 1024x768 on my TV. Tried
extending the desktop in Screen Resolution, no luck.
Now i tried doing xrandr --output TV --off, it turns off the TV! Then i try
--auto at the end, and it doesnt turn it back on. Can only get it back on by
going to sleep and turning the laptop back on.

I spent many hours, I thought it was because I'm fairly a newbie to
linux and must be a configuration issue, but I am convinced theres a bug
somewhere or it is not supported out of the box.

Verified other bugs similar, but not exactly like the one i'm having.

[Bug 218519] Re: [Hardy] Firebug broken with latest firefox

2008-05-10 Thread Joshua Paine
@Laurent, It seems that network monitoring and script debugging are now
both disabled by default for all sites and must be enabled on a case-by-
case or site-by-site basis. Those would be the only parts of Firebug, I
would think, that would slow a site down, so I expect that the latest
builds no longer include the option because it's no longer necessary.

Network monitoring used to be enabled by default, and on sites like
gmail with many XHR requests, that would cause problems.

[Bug 216309] Re: qdvdauthor only shows "Error" when I click Add Movie

2008-05-10 Thread ivom
Message for Bob Henz: It will not help you if you go to Hardy, because
my problems started when I installed Hardy Heron.

The question is, how come there is a problem with QDVDauthor in 7.10? I was
running it up untill I installed 8.04 without any problems.
The current version under 8.04 is 1.0104, the same as the version in beta.

For the author/maintainer (Varol): When I right click on the left side
of the workspace, it does two things:

a) If I did not create a project, it immediately starts with a new project
wizard
b) If I created a project, it immediately brings a file selection window that
looks the same as in the old versions of QDVDauthor, and then I can add movies.
This selection screen is not the same as the one that you get when you click on
Add / Organize Video. If you click on the former, every video file has a nice
"Error" icon.

So, the question is, is this how the program is supposed to work?

[Bug 96454] Re: [Feisty, Gutsy] MASTER: HP LaserJet 1000/1005/1018/1020 don't work because of missing firmware

2008-05-10 Thread Felipe Figueiredo
I had the same behaviour in Hardy final, as I had in Gutsy (as in my
previous comment): running hp-toolbox in terminal produces "error:
Firmware file '/usr/share/hplip/data/firmware/hp_laserjet_1020.fw.gz'
not found." when I tried to download firmware from the GUI.

I can confirm that using the HPLIP gui to remove and recreate the
printer configuration gave me the interactive procedure provided by hp-
setup, which automatically downloaded the firmware and worked fine.

Apparently CUPS creating the printer spool directly (when USB printer is
first connected) ignores the need for special drivers. Could hp-setup be
used automatically instead for HP printers for a "Just Works"
experience?

I can confirm this issue occurs under Hardy Heron x86_64 running

[Bug 229155] [NEW] OpenOffice Writer: Autosave faulty

[Bug 185197] Re: Evolution using large amount of resident RAM in Hardy

2008-05-10 Thread Olivia
I'm using Hardy and I'm having a similar problem. If I leave Evolution
open and minimized, it seems to be all ok for quite some time, but if I
try to plug in an usb external drive or, say, change the wallpaper (and
when I want to change wallpaper I might spend some time with the
appearance window open), Evolution starts using 500mb of ram! Sometimes
(that goes for when I plug an external drive) I can't even get it
closed, because the system hangs entirely, so the only option I have
left is to force a reboot.

At first I thought it was something with the external drives (well,
maybe it is), but just now it happened when I had the appearance window
open, and when at last I could close it and open the system monitor, I
noticed how much ram Evolution was using, and it was minimized!

I'm not much of a geek expert, but let me know if there's anything I can
do to help.

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to report this issue and
helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given
us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and
converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the
difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise
problems you are having in the support tracker at
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are
bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

The solution to your issue would be to open the Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and type the following command:
sudo dpkg --configure -a

You will be asked to enter your password (password will not be echoed)
and then dpkg will try to fix itself. Hope this helps :)

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2008-05-10 Thread rai4shu2
I respectfully disagree. That roadmap only states "when Panel size
changes," and that has nothing to do with this bug. This bug (probably)
has more to do with the fact that applets have variable widths and are
configured to specific locations that cause massive confusion in the
panel rendering if you happen to do things like log out and log back in
a little later (which changes the size of the clock applet). There
doesn't appear to be anything that gives priority to the order of the
applet as opposed to its exact position.

sounds like the problem I have with a Sattelite 1135 and latest Hardy
(08.04). If I just let it go to sleep long time, the power LED is green.
Short term power save, the LED does turn orange and pressing the power
button does resume.

[Bug 219054] Re: Evolution doesn't send mail with attachments via GMail SMTP

2008-05-10 Thread Siddhartha Koirala
its definately evolution issue! there is a problem with it and gmail. it
worked fine in gutsy for me but in hardy i also have the same problem. I
have tried all kinds of different gmail settings for evolution but non
of them work for me! i.e. changing the ports . ssl tls. it does get the
mail but it doesn't send it. even smaller ones than 150 KB (i'm sure
everyone want it to work to it's max file output 10MB i think??). And by
the way all this is ment to be simple and easy.

[Bug 32123] Re: initramfs not generated correctly on dist-upgrade

2008-05-10 Thread Bob Gotthardt
I'm a new user, who partitioned [160GB] and installed 8.04 AMD dual boot
[w/XP] on Dell/Vostro machine (much fun).

Now, Ubuntu won't reboot and NONE of the Live CDs will either. GRUB is
working fine (wherever that resides) so XP comes up.

Basically, initramfs "hangs", followed by repeated ATA0 ... errors.
Others have many related stories out there. No need to circumvent kernel
as others have done but appreciate any [tips or] new distribution of
8.04 to resolve.

I offer any details, if needed, to help expedite resolution.

Yes, I guess this is random. I don't remember doing anything special
before the crashes. I launch aMule, and start doing some other things,
but 3 or 5 minutes later, it goes down.

This is very weird. Today, after 5 crashes (approximately) it's going
fine...

By the way, my version is 2.2.0~svn20080218-0ubuntu4 (from Ubuntu Hardy
Heron x86_64, like the OP).

- In debian/patches:
+ email-crasher.patch: Patch by upstream, fix crash on mail indexing.
  + 03_dont_activate_indexing_and_watching.patch: don't active indexing nor
watching as decided by the technical board
+ 02_no_kde_autostart.patch: Do not autostart trackerd in Kde, as they
have strigi.
- In debian/control:
  + Addhere to DebianMaintainerField spec.
+ Do not build-depend on universe dependencies:
libunac1-dev, libqdbm-dev.
+ tracker depends on o3read instead of recommend it, so we have
OOo indexing by default.
- In debian/rules:
+ Enable sqlite external db instead of qdbm.
- In debian/tracker.py:
+ Added an apport hook to ignore tracker-extract crashes, since they
are caused by setrlimit terminating tracker-extract when it raises
it's cpu/memory limit.
