[Bug 218334] Re: lockup on mac mini 945GM [8086:27a2]

2008-05-18 Thread eugenesan
Well, after leaving PC for a weekend I've found it broken state.
X was flickering and after few minutes screen became deadly grey :-(.
Seems like workarounds are helping only partially and X is still doing
something nasty.
Meanwhile I've downgraded to Xorg 7.2/1.3 from Gutsy, of course compiz is not
usable any more, but stability is more important!

P.S. Usually, I don't tend to be dramatic, but If things are not going to be
fixed very soon, I'll have to recommend our IT department to replace Gutsy with
something more "productive" then Hardy.
I do understand that it's not Canonical's solely fault, but nothing is done
from their side, at least not in public.
I must remind those who may concern, Most of PCs and Laptops existing at
today's corporative market are i945 based. It will be very sad if Ubuntu will
loose that market :-(.

[Bug 231844] [NEW] gitweb should be able to handle different configuration files

2008-05-18 Thread Alberto Bertogli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: git-core

gitweb, as configured, can't handle different configuration files, so
trying to use it in virtual domains requires either modification, wrapping,
or some other form of non-trivial hacks.

It'd be nicer if, for instance, it looked for gitweb.conf in the current
directory, and only resorted to /etc/gitweb.conf if it's not available.

Thanks a lot,
Alberto

[Bug 57502] Re: JMicron PATA/SATA Controller does not work

2008-05-18 Thread GripS
Adding the 'irqpoll' argument and nothing else worked for me after I had
installed ubuntu by disabling the jmicron controller on my DFI Lanparty
LT P35 T2R.

I have 2 sata drives in a non-raid config. Raid is set to ide mode.
After setting SATA mode from IDE to raid I was able to install via the
live cd. Set back to IDE after the install and disabled the jmicron
controller in bios. Added the irqoll argument. Booted into bios and
enabled the jmicron controller. Booted into ubuntu just fine and now
cd/dvd roms are recognized.

[Bug 156556] certainly an xorg problem

2008-05-18 Thread Pablo Angulo
This is certainly an xorg problem. Both using xgl and Xephyr servers
solved the problem. Unfortunately, there is no longer 3D acceleration on
my ati mobility u1 card so xgl doesn't feel right, and I was unable to
configure xephyr as the only graphics server. Can run gimp in a Xephyr
window, but it's no good.

And adding

(xor-color (color-rgb 1.0 1.0 1.0))

to the gimprc in gimp 2.4.2 fixes it.

[Bug 175909] Re: Administrator button fails to work in kde-settings and kcontrol

2008-05-18 Thread Richard
@heu: Perhaps you have a different variant of this problem. The default
Ubuntu/Kubuntu setup is that your hostname has an entry for 127.0.1.1 in
the /etc/hosts file, but it would be good if those who still have this
problem can test this.

Could you try reverting your hosts file to original setup, and see if
you get the problem again? If so, maybe you could try the 'gksudo
kcontrol' or DCOP server shutdown and restart workarounds, and post any
output here.

My hosts file has always had a 192.168.1.x address for this host - this
did not change with the upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, so if it is the
cause then it's a regression.

please do not use those packages in any tutorials because they will be updated

I will set up a site on mcentral.de which keeps track of the latest packages

open a terminal and run following command, this will show up one of the

This is an example for 32bit Ubuntu Hardy 19. May 2008:

[Bug 231839] [NEW] FlashPlayer Freezes firefox randomly

2008-05-18 Thread Sook
Public bug reported:

Ok.. the problem is this... Will be watching youtube or other various sites

way to fix it is to

The problem also happens more often when trying to use a flash-site to order a

[Bug 231840] [NEW] suspend

2008-05-18 Thread kyty
Public bug reported:

Today I had a MAJOR problem. Here is a more or less accurate
recollection:

I put my laptop on "suspend" again, forgetting that it doesn't work well
with Ubuntu installed on winda. This time, when I restarted the laptop,
Ubuntu started to complain that it can't find the menu file. That's
when I got slightly disoriented and rebooted the machine into winda.
Then I found a/some menu file somewhere under the Ubuntu directories and
moved it to where the boot utility was looking for it. Then I clicked on
the Ubuntu "disks" directory (just for fun) and got an error message
saying the the file is corrupted. I rebooted and found Ubuntu unable
to start. Then I rebooted to winda and ... winda started checking the
hard drive; when it finished it happily notified me that a corrupted
file was deleted -- yes it was Ubuntu disk. It would be a bad day, if
some of my files were not backed up.

Ubuntu and winda professional were all up-to-date. Winda was updated by
our IT on the 16th or 17th; no SP3 on winda though. I suspended Ubuntu
may be a week or two ago -- before the latest winda and Ubuntu updates
-- and I was able boot Ubuntu then.

the ratio of users. But thinking beyond numbers - does Ubuntu want to
ignore or embrace those who need these features?

[Bug 221691] Re: Problems with Nautilus / X-server

2008-05-18 Thread Trond Husoe
Today the icons under Nautilus was / is not responsive, but mouse can be
used to click on links in status bar, menu and links in Firefox.

Have to select an area in Nautilus to select icon. At one time this
selected area was not removed. This area is moving up and down when I
changed directory to cd-dvd creator because of the write to disc button-
area.

I still don't know what this could be, but I am trying to burn Gutsy to
take a look at the xorg.conf-file. I removed the file yesterday without
any changes.

one by one and see if it still crashes.

It will be great if you can provide a stack trace too.

[Bug 207127] Re: fn key doesn't work in hardy with macbook pro fourth generation (4, 1)

2008-05-18 Thread Alex Karpenko
Attached is a patch to fix the fn keys on all new Macbook Pros (v4,1). The
naming scheme follows the one defined by Apple in:
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBTopCase.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBTCKeyboard.kext/Contents/Info.plist

The keyboard name is WellspringII, and the Device ID is 0x0230, 0x0231, 0x0232
for ANSI, ISO, JIS respectively (as defined in Info.plist, and confirmed for
ANSI and ISO by me and Scott).
Some debugging has been done using dynamically loaded quirks here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4984452&posted=1#post4984452

This patch simply adds the findings to hid-quirks.c, so that the
keyboard is recognized automatically in the future.

[Bug 217580] Re: Slow performance with Gmail

2008-05-18 Thread ajeshp
I had similar slow scrolling problems with my online brokerage account
(tradeking) once I logged on to the website. The slow scrolling existed
on both firefox-3.0 and ephiphany, but was not there in Galeon.

My problem did not get fixed with the RC1 release. Disabling compiz did
not help either. However, if I logged on with a different username, the
problem was not there, so maybe there is a problem with some config
file. For now, I disabled the Nvidia restricted driver and the problem
seems to be not present even when I log in.

Thought I would share..

[Bug 82504] Re: gnome-panel autohides inconsistently

2008-05-18 Thread Tiede
I am quite baffled to see that this issue is still not resolved after more than
a year!
I am part of those who want -actually, drool everyday to the thought of- ubuntu
taking over the PC majority market share, but I am unhappy to say that these
few bugs are not helping.
I am still wondering why this bug was given a "low" importance. It is part of
the 'everyday use' of the Gnome environment. In other words, it is one of
GNOME's most used functions by the users, and is also one of the first things
they see when they are using GNOME. As such, any error in that panel, which is
a main interaction idea- will take away from the excitement of users to use
this Operating System. This error is not one that only advanced users of GNOME
will encounter; on all operating systems, a reliable auto-hide function of the
panels is usually the norm. I fail to see how we can make the software suite
look professional if the first time a new user from the legacy OS tries to
attempt his first modification by enabling autohide on his panel, he finds that
contrarily to what he's used to, the panel decides every once in a while not to
do as it's told.
Please do give this the importance it deserve. It is not just a customization
issue, it is also, and more importantly, a reliability issue.

[Bug 231833] [NEW] Connecting to a little-endian machine screws up colour

2008-05-18 Thread PrinsEdje80
Public bug reported:

When trying to connect to a tightvnc server on a solaris *SPARC* machine
then the colours all have a yellow hue. Connecting to a tightvnc server
on a solaris *X86* machine the colours are correctly displayed (same for
a linux machine on an x86 platform). My guess is that vinagre (or gtk-
vnc) is not able to distinguish between little-endian and big-endian vnc
connections. Trying to use vncviewer (from xvnc4viewer) shows the
colours correctly in all cases.

Reproducability: always

How:
Start a vncserver on a solaris sparc. Start vinagre on the Ubuntu machine and
connect. Colours are off.
Start a vncserver on a solaris x86. Start vinagre on the Ubuntu machine and
connect. Colours are good.

Hi, I have a Palm T|X, but this isn't happening during a sync, the crash
occurs when I activate the jppy plugin in jpilot.

Jpilot launches and runs fine otherwise, but whenever I switch to the

[Bug 231830] [NEW] The permissions of "***" could not be determined

2008-05-18 Thread dave3281
Public bug reported:

I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed on two machines in my home both with the
64bit version. When ever I put in a cd or plug in an external hard
drive the permissions tab states "The permissions of "***" could not be
determined" ("***" represents the name of the volume). I can use chmod
and fix it but I shouldn't have to. In 7.10 this wasn't an issue for me.
With the external HDD I even make sure to set permissions from the
computer that made it to allow all users full access. As far as the cd
goes I can't install any of my Windows programs (via Wine) with out
being root, which is starting to become a real pain.

[Bug 216302] Re: gdm crash at first log in

2008-05-18 Thread Brian Pitts
I experience a similar crash with intel video hardware.

The following has happened for me on two systems, a Dell GX100 and a
compaq of similar age.

1) Install using the alternate installer preseeded to pull in the
following additional packages: ubuntu-restricted-extras edubuntu-desktop
edubuntu-addon-kde edubuntu-addon-science edubuntu-addon-young scribus
blender inkscape audacity dia-gnome kompozer stellarium avidemux freecol
freeciv-client-gtk freemind thunderbird thunderbird-gnome-support
openssh-server

2) Log in with the user created during the installation, and add two
mroe users through the Users and Groups tool

3) Start the Login Window manager and click the security tab.

4) The graphical desktop disappears.

5) I manually restart gdm.

6) Whenever I try to login, gdm crashed and restarts.

The messages repeated in dmesg are

May 18 23:48:01 ubuntu kernel: [ 2670.037487] ^Idriver to use
reclaim_buffers_idlelocked() instead.

2008-05-18 Thread Harvey Entendez Diaz
hi,

i have the same problem, but i'm using hardy heron the stable (released)
version. eth0 is detected but it does not have any connection even on
roaming mode, hdcp or using static ip. i have to put in another card
(realtek) just to have internet connection. my SiS NIC is gigabit
capable. here's my details:

on hardy beta the NIC doesn't work but i haven't reported the bug since
its already logged, hoping that the stable release will fix it, but it
doesn't apparently (at least on my machine).

tried to recompile the sis190.ko driver (following this thread:

there were already fixes made, only it didn't work for my machine which

[Bug 231821] Re: Default file handlers can't be normally changed.

2008-05-18 Thread Raziel-chan
After a quick sanity check I came to a discovery that the bug in the
fourth point is inconsistent between various sites. On one site .torrent
files are greeted with the limited save-cancel dialogue, while on two
others they are greeted by a full open file dialogue. Still, despite
ktorrent being listed in the applications menu, the dialogue forces the
user to browse the file system to find it. Furthermore, it doesn't
remember the selected application, so I have to browse for it the next
time I open such a file. It doesn't even remember it if I check the
'apply automatically' checkbox.

[Bug 231822] [NEW] audio setup problems with 8.04

2008-05-18 Thread nobodie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

I was hoping to link this to my laptop audio bug since it seems to be the same
thing. I've got three computers, all running 8.04. An inspiron1420, and then
two that I put together myself, one with a P4 and VIA chipset and the other
with a P5N MB, intel chipset(965 i think ) and a core 2 duo processor. Anyway,
I get no audio on any of them. Audio works in all other applications (including
Skype) but not in Ekiga-- yes I know that ekiga handles sound differently from
Skype, I had it running well in Gutsy on the two desktops, the lappie is new,
so I know it can work. Maybe the attached bug info will help, but let me know
what else I can tell you.
thanks

the Q's below:
1) 8.04, Hardy Heron
2)ekiga 2.0.12-Oubuntu2
3)expected audio both through headset and microphone and in the GUI sliders
under "audio"
4)no audio in any of the things above

Thanks that fixed the problem! I agree the package in Ubuntu 8.04 is a
little dated.

[Bug 218126] Re: xen guest kernel bug: 'kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.24/debian/build/custom-source-xen/drivers/xen/netfront/netfront.c:785'

Nasraty je kazdy. Aj ja, co som to reportoval, pozri vyssie.

I understand now the policy of Canonical is against the best interests of
community.
The kernel freeze should not be applicable to such grevious bugs.

I suspect the Canonical plays a dishonest game with the users.
They intentionally don't fix some grevious bugs for server use so
the companies have to buy the support from them.

Shame on Canonical

[Bug 231821] [NEW] Default file handlers can't be normally changed.

2008-05-18 Thread Raziel-chan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Binary package: firefox-3.0 (ver. 3.0~5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3)
System: Ubuntu 8.04 running KDE 3.5.9 from Kubuntu-desktop 1.75.

The problem lies in the file handlers. For my install of firefox the
preferences>applications tab was indeed filled up with applications, but
the effects weren't that great.

Detailed descriptions:
1. Firefox marked some applications as default. I found no way to change it but
to uninstall them, what wasn't possible for, for example, file roller, as that
would uninstall the whole ubuntu-desktop package. Even then the applications
added by me weren't marked as default.
2. Directly linked with the previous point. The downloads window (or download
manager, however one likes to call it) is working strictly in compliance with
the applications list... Selecting the default applications. As this, there is
no way to change its behaviour than to uninstall them, what brings up another
linked problem described in the following point.
As an example, I've set up firefox to automatically download and open .zip
files in Ark. This worked fine and the files were opened in ark, but when I
opened the same files from the downloads window, they were opened in File
Runner, the application marked as default that can't be removed without
removing the whole Ubuntu-desktop package.
3. After removing transmission, which was the application marked as the default
one by firefox, I got the 'choose an application' dialogue for the downloaded
torrent files (but only in the downloads window) and selected ktorrent marking
the remember this setting checkbox. While it worked for the torrent file in the
download manager, it added a strange association to the applications tab: Now
the file type 'file' is set to 'always open with ktorrent'.
4. (Already filed as bug 220504 ) Some file types, for example the already
mentioned torrent files, have no application selection dialogue if their
handling is set to 'always ask'. Torrent files, despite having two applications
present in the applications menu (now it's only one and it still doesn't work),
were given only the simplest 'cancel-save' dialogue. I found no way to change
it.

Already tried solution involving removing the mimetypes.rdf file from
the profile folder. The only thing it changed was that several file
types disappeared completely from the applications menu and I had to
restore the file to get them back.

[Bug 188736] Re: Overdrawing issues with konsole

2008-05-18 Thread a7x
I can confirm the problem (on two different machines each with nVidia
cards running the nvidia-glx-new). I can also confirm that adding
'Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "true"' makes the problem go away. Does
this mean that the bug is actually in nvidia-glx-new and not compiz?

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-05-18 Thread andrewEdwards
Can I just add to my post above - the server kernal in use
(2.6.24-17-server) which was installed this morning is one of the worst
we have had over the last couple of weeks. Its resetting itself every 2
hours. Its always under minimal load, as in constant file access etc.
(its a svn, samba, music server) but load rarely gets over 0.3 (
12:49:15 up 7 min, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.04, 0.03 )

[Bug 231818] [NEW] nvidia-xconfig does not respect monitor settings

2008-05-18 Thread udippel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-xconfig

nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Tue Jan 22 19:53:46 PST 2008
on 8.04

I needed it to recognise and use the card (MX420). At reboot, the LCD screen
only showed 'out of sync', and there was nothing I could do about it; no
Ctrl-Alt-+/-. Not even Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. Only a hard reboot and 'root' could
help the problem:
It had not respected the previous settings, and neither read EDID or DDC and set

HorizSync 30.0 - 110.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0

as well as

Modes "1600x1200" 1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

(if I am not mistaken, I changed it from there)

Any newbie would have to consider this install a 'done thing' and be
helpless, I am afraid.

No need to state, that nvidia-xconfig needs to respect the previous
setting and probably just change the driver to 'nvidia'?

[Bug 231816] [NEW] heisenbug : Totem randonly does a full system freeze

2008-05-18 Thread Wladston Viana
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 from a Toshiba R20 tablet pc.

Sometimes, when opening a video or music, totem will play it for about 2
seconds, and then the system will come to a full freeze. No keyboard
shortcut works, the only way to make it reboot is to hold the power
button. The mouse will still move, thought.

It's not related to a particular music/movie, it happens in a real
random fashion.

Please, help me debug it. Nothing new gets litsted on /var/crash.

Xubuntu doesn't use Nautilus, which suggests the issue is lower down
(perhaps kernel related?) Can you mount the disk manually? If so, does
