[Bug 46046] Re: wrong keyboard layout when reconfiguring xserver-xorg

2008-05-28 Thread Thomas Grauschopf
I'm using a laptop with hardy and had problems with the resolution of an
external monitor.

So i ran dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg.

Afterwards, keyboard layout was changed in xorg.conf from "de" to "us".
This had the effect that I could not login under X because my password
contained special characters.

I knew how to fix this, but this could be a source of frustration for a
newbie.

[Bug 225675] Re: Hardy Heron boot error

2008-05-28 Thread Saïvann Carignan
antani : Thank your for your fast answer. Can you confirm that your
screen resolution in System / Preferences / Screen Resolution is
1280x1024? If it uses a different resolution, can you change the
resolution in /etc/usplash.conf to the good one and confirm if the bug
can be reproduced?

According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance, I change the
priority of this bug to High.

[Bug 197130] Re: [hardy] Black X screen and system halt after installing linux-rt

2008-05-28 Thread Pierre-Antoine Champin
my two cents :
I have a Dell Latitude D820 (video: Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300)

I was using linux-rt and nvidia-glx-new in Gutsy. After upgrading to Hardy, I
got the black screen / no response symptom.
I changed for nvidia-glx (not new) still with linux-rt, and it worked fine.
Compiz runs quite smoothly.

NB: when switching to -generic, nvidia-glx-new and nvidia-glx both work
fine.

NB2: a colleague has exactly the same laptop. He did a fresh install of
Hardy. When he installed the linux-rt kernel, he had the back screen,
and fixed it by uninstalling nvidia-glx-new and installing nvidia-glx
instead.

[Bug 105817] Re: Feisty: jingle (drums) is played repeatedly after login

2008-05-28 Thread Andrés Javier López
I have experiencied this bug in Ubuntu Hardy, it happens when I have two
users logged and logout from one of them.

When I logout, I return to the gdm screen, not the locked screen asking
for a password, and when I reenter with the user that was already logged
the bug occurs.

When I logout after the bug shows up, the gdm screen has a message
telling that the login failed and the capitalization may be wrong.

It has happened at least three times, tell me if you need more info.

The problem is still there for me as well (Asus U1F).

Just as a side note: When I use model=lenovo then it works, except if
the headphones are plugged in before or during boot-up, in which case I
have to unplug and plug them in again to mute the internal speaker.

[Bug 131399] Re: %sudo ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL seems to have no effect in sudoers

2008-05-28 Thread Wolfram Ravenwolf
There's still a problem here:

Since the sudo package upgrade won't update the sudoers file, to fix it,
one has to execute a command like this:

sudo su -c "mv /etc/sudoers /etc/sudoers.bak && dpkg-reconfigure sudo &&
sed -i~ s/#\ %/%/ /etc/sudoers && adduser $USER sudo"

This creates a backup and then recreates the sudoers file - so now it's
fixed. BUT:

Since the admin line is added by the installer, it will be missing from
the fixed file. And on a new installation (Intrepid? 8.04.1?) where the
fixed file may be the base, if the installer still adds the admin line
after the sudo line, it will again be broken.

Just wanted to point that out - maybe we can find an elegant solution?

(Personally, the way I did it before the sudo group was used in the
sudoers file, I simply changed "ALL=(ALL)" to "ALL=NOPASSWD:" on the
%admin line. No need for the %sudo line.)

[Bug 197589] Re: Numeric keypad no longer works after upgrade

2008-05-28 Thread Blempis
I have two desktop computers. Both upgrades from 7.10 to 8.04 were painful.
Normal internet upgrade failed during the install process and cd-upgrade's
automatic option didn't work either.
"A dialog will be displayed offering you the opportunity to upgrade using that
CD. "
- Ubuntu

"If the upgrade dialog is not displayed for any reason, you may also run the
following command using Alt+F2: "
Not so straight work flow even here. A message popped up claiming that cd is
not mounted, which it surely was. After remounting system seemed to hang but
the announcement was hidden. It was under all the other windows but nothing
indicated that it even exists.

Next step was to realize that cd-upgrade is defenately not going to do
anything nor it is giving any instructions. The lacking piece of advise
was that cd should be added to one's download sources. After that and
number of error pop-ups everything seemed to be ok, but my numpad
stopped responding. As I mentioned, all this happened during both hardy
upgrades.

Solution (which is surely not intuitive) was this already mentioned one:
" 1. Go to System > Preferences > Accessibility > Keyboard Accessibility
   2. Select [x] Enable keyboard accessibility features
   3. Go to the tab Mouse Keys and deselect [ ] Enable keyboard accessibility
features."

- Ubuntu - rather stable if not upgraded to LTS.

[Bug 109373] Re: After inserting disc, unable to eject DVD drive by pressing the button on drive

2008-05-28 Thread altermd
Please I beg you I have not responded before , because I am very busy
today to try 8.04.

I will report you the result of this update soon. (I hope less a week)

But, I thought trying before a test :

Updating step by step 6.04 to 8.04 but making differences with 32 and 64 Amd
version.
I cannot now really remember, as I reported here, if this problem happen with
the version 6.04 and this mother board. I think it is really important to know
it because this button appeared on my working place at the same time I
installed the new hard system with the "familly ubuntu" dvd 7.04.
So perhaps there is some incompatibility between this BENQ driver and this
motherboard. Why not ?

And why not trying this Dvd-writer one on an other unit (an older one)
and the 7.10 version to make a cross testing ? I only tested it on Etch
before the crash of my hard system.

I think it is really important doing this first, isn't it ?

Oh, Just a few word again :
I tested to burn an iso image and it does'nt work with Brasero and Graveman too
...

So, I can doing all these things, but time is very short for me ...

[Bug 235415] [NEW] nfs mount fails on unknown option "nobrowse"

2008-05-28 Thread ChristianDrexler
Public bug reported:

On Hardy mounting nfs shares configured via automounter fails with the error
message:

mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified

When I try to manually mount a share with the options specified in the
automounter map I get this:

mount -t nfs -s -o nosuid,nobrowse,rsize=32768,wsize=32768
stix01:/vol/homevol/admin/teedxl /mnt/
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified

This option is working under Dapper and Gutsy, please fix it as it is
making Hardy practically useless for us.

[Bug 235414] [NEW] when switching session, the initial session is closed

2008-05-28 Thread Baptiste Mille-Mathias
Public bug reported:

Use case:
having the fast-user-switch-applet installed.
I have 2 real users on my system.

I'm logged with my user, my wife need to access her session, so I click on the
fusa applet, and select her session;
At GDM, my session is defined as "Already Connected" (I'm using ubuntu theme
with face browser); she logs on without any problem.
Once she finished; I'm switching back again; I access to GDM, and first I can
see it doesn't say my session is already started ;
when I access my session, I can verify this is a new one; no application are
started;

Something I noticed is when I click the first time on the FUSA applet, is I
only have the 2 real account listed; but when I'm back in my session
(just-recreated); I have 3 items, me, my wife and "Other".
Don't know if it is relevant or not

[Bug 235416] [NEW] gcompris fails to install spanish package

2008-05-28 Thread reciclanet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcompris

I'm using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 in spanish and gcompris 8.4.4-1.1ubuntu1

When installing gcompris from "add and remove programs", the packages
"gcompris" and "gcompris-data" are installed. But when you run it, the
language is half-spanish half-english. After installing manually the
package "gcompris-sound-es" it works perfectly, including sounds.

I don't know if sounds are an extra option, but I think the text and
explanations of the games should be in spanish after installing the main
package. We have reproduced this bug in several computers with Ubuntu
8.04.

Important: This bug is new in Hardy. In another computer with Ubuntu
7.10, it works fine.

[Bug 87661] Re: [apport] polytopes crashed with SIGILL in _mesa_x86_64_transform_points4_perspective()

2008-05-28 Thread Mikael Gerdin
By checking `uname -m` we only detect if the _kernel_ is x86-64.
This would be a problem if someone was running a 64-bit kernel and a 32-bit
userland because they would get MESA_NO_ASM exported without needing it.
I think it would be better to do
if [ `dpkg --print-architecture` = "amd64" ]
Because that would tell us if we were running in an amd64 userland and that's
what we really want to test for.
I think checking for "3dnow" in flags is preferred because AMD is not the only
cpu vendor using that technology, even though none of the others have built any
64-bit chips yet, it would probably be more future-proof.

[Bug 59620] Re: can't handle ext2 resize_inode feature

2008-05-28 Thread James Dupin
The thing is I believe resize_inode is out of the way as I already
"disabled" it with tune2fs.

The only 2 attributes left are ext_attr and sparse_super, both of them I cannot
remove with tune2fs.
dumpe2fs /dev/sda4 | grep feature
dumpe2fs 1.40.8 (13-Mar-2008)
Filesystem features: ext_attr sparse_super

The problem is the same for the resize options of parted but this I
simply overtake the problem by resizing the FS and then
deleting/recreating the partition.

There is also the problem of not being able to set the resize_inode
feature again without formatting the partition (or at least I haven't
found how)

(using hardy btw)

[Bug 229107] Re: Gnome fullscreen window placement does not work with dual monitor setup in Ubuntu 8.04

2008-05-28 Thread Sebastian Busch
Although I cannot confirm that it worked in 7.10, I do confirm the
8.04-behaviour.

I have a laptop (Apple MacBook2,1 with 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics
Controller (rev 02) ) with one exit to attach an external monitor. For
example "xpdf -fullscreen" or starting a presentation in OpenOffice
appears only on the screen of the laptop, not the external monitor. This
is very inconvenient when giving presentations with the laptop and an
attached projector.

I do not see any change depending on placing of the two screens with
respect to each other.

Sebastian.

P.S.: How can you drag fullscreen windows?

[Bug 235419] [NEW] issue with Hardy USB-serial/hal and Edgeport /2c

2008-05-28 Thread QPrime
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

Regression from Gutsy, Edgeport/2c no longer functions correctly with
Hardy. This device previously worked perfectly with Gutsy.
Interestingly enough, if I boot into Gutsy (allowing the device to be
successfully initialized) then warm-boot into Hardy the device is
initialized correctly in Hardy and works properly. However any
subsequent hot-plug of the device or cold-boot direct into Hardy renders
the device useless again. This may be a similar/duplicate of bug Bug

symptoms are similar.

[Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare

2008-05-28 Thread Jan Wender
I had the same problem on Hardy/amd64 on an T61p using VMWare
Workstation 6.0.3. Since then I upgrade Hardy to current levels, and,
probably more important, installed VMWare Workstation 6.5 Beta (build
91182). Since then the problem disappeared. Since the beta program is
open (registration needed), maybe someone could try this?

[Bug 235421] [NEW] Please make gnome-keyring optional

2008-05-28 Thread Andreas Kabel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

I have contracted gnome-keyring by upgrading to Hardy, unfortunately,
I cannot remove it without removing essential packages (gdm...). I find it
extremely annoying in its current form, and it has no benfits whatsoever for
me.
My ssh setup was working perfectly for my purposes, but gnome-keyring's
authors seem to believe that they know a lot better what my purposes are.
Make the packages uninstallable, weed out some of the more far-fetched
dependencies or at least ask for a user's consent before you change the
behavior of essential
packages such as ssh for him. This is beginning to feel like Windows.

[Bug 235449] [NEW] changing column width in Nautilus when "view as list" not working properly

2008-05-28 Thread gerben
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, Gnome 2.22.1, Nautilus 2.22.2

When I set Nautilus to view the folder contents as a list, changing the
column widths is very difficult.

My columns are:

Name | Size | Type | Date Modified

and this is how resizing the widths of the columns works for me at the moment:
- trying to move the "|" between Name and Size, does not work, won't move
- trying to move the "|" between Size and Type, adjusts the position of the "|"
between Name and Size
- trying to move the "|" between Type and Date modified, adjusts the position
of the "|" between Name and Size and the "|" between Size and Type

Here is a screenshot showing what happens:

This should be a bug introduced into either device mapper or LVM.
I don't have such issue on Ubuntu 7.10 kernel 2.6.20-16-generic

I tried various image formats, dia show, rotation, full screen,
mirroring, and directories with a lot of pictures. Everything works well
for me, too.

Re: [Bug 220857] Re: linuxtv.org mercurial repository wont build against hardy kernel due to "disagrees about version of symbol videobuf_*

2008-05-28 Thread bvidinli
This is an important issue, "being unable to compile linuxtv drivers on
ubuntu."

this also affects our trust to ubuntu and linux in future,
i try to build a set-top-box using ubuntu and mythtv, and i cannot do
it only because of this compilation issue.

So, i may also do a payment to linuxtv community or whoever solves
this issue permanently...
i think we must support linux/ubuntu community (or Pardus in Turkiye/Turkey)

Thanks, see you

I can confirm what Chris Coulson says here about windows still appearing as
white if they are created when the computer is not showing my VT as the
active VT.

[Bug 231930] Re: libGL.so symlink failed

2008-05-28 Thread Freme
Had the same problems with other packages as well (ia32-libs and stuff). Some
investigation showed that this really is due to the nvidia-driver-crap.
The following solution fixed all my Problems:

mkdir -p /usr/lib/nvidia
mkdir -p /usr/lib32/nvidia

I can only guess that the nvidia-packages by ubuntu use sligthly
different folders than the nvidia-binaries.

[Bug 212092] Re: firefox crashed randomly with segmentation fault

2008-05-28 Thread EliCoten
Hi

It could be a flash related bug but that doesn't explain why GMail often
triggers the crash.

As I said previously I only have 256Mb RAM and if the module was faulty,
I think it would cause more problems than just with Firefox. Its not
possible that its not being used because there is only one module in
this system - its not like "only one of them" is faulty because there is
only one in total.

How do I debug the crash? Its not really a crash - more that it just
randomly closes but if I run it from a terminal it does say Segmentation
fault.

Also if the problem is with the flash plugin why didn't it make problems
on Gusty? Why is it only since I've upgraded to Hardy (with Firefox 3)
that I notice the problem?

2008-05-28 Thread Dov-El
Thanks. I've also downloaded a deb from Edgy. It was the only older
version .deb I could find. I'll try that out as well.

I'll also try the package from via itself. See what it does on my

[Bug 235203] Re: 2.22.3 stable update

2008-05-28 Thread Martin Pitt
I tested:
 - opening of various text files
 - syntax formatting
 - spell checking/correction
 - printing
 - undo/redo
 - search/replace
 - help

All worked well for me with the hardy-proposed version.

I am not a heavy gedit user, though, so I would like to see another
confirmation.
